0:04
now I did mention earlier that I've got
0:06
special guests here now I didn't want to
0:08
give you give too much away because this
0:10
is great you're going to love this first
0:12
of all let's say hi to Neeve have walked
0:15
your way well it's been too long what's
0:16
going on I know I've just been walking
0:19
so much dogey that I haven't had time to
0:21
pop in and visit you and you just got
0:22
back just got back I actually did I did
0:24
a three-day hike this week so yeah
0:26
finished that yesterday legs are a bit
0:28
stiff and really happy to be in here
0:30
today as always but really happy to be
0:32
in here today to tell you a little story
0:34
about these two legends that you have in
0:37
the studio you today it's quite
0:38
unbelievable but go on so um these guys
0:43
are and you know I'm a big fan of the
0:45
Camino Santiago exactly these guys are
0:47
going to tackle the Camino Santiago uh
0:49
but not in any old manner they're going
0:51
to do it from their front door their
0:53
front door is in javia right that means
0:56
Santiago is 1,200 kilm away and so
1:00
therefore they're going to have a very
1:02
long walk ahead of them over the next
1:04
couple of months and I'm just so proud
1:07
and so excited um to bring them in today
1:09
so they can tell you a little story
1:11
about The Who and the why and the when
1:13
um basically I'm here to to promote
1:16
something and that is that on the 20th
1:19
of October which is this Sunday we're
1:21
going to have a little party we're going
1:23
to have a little Bon voage party Buen
1:25
Camino to gwendelyn and Glenn and I'd
1:29
love for gangs of people to come along
1:31
and have some cake we're going to have
1:33
TARTA de Santiago we're you had me at
1:36
cake I know right that's the only reason
1:38
I'm going and we're going to have coffee
1:40
drinks we're going to have live music
1:42
and I just think that this challenge is
1:44
so inspiring um that we should give them
1:47
the biggest and best send off that we
1:49
can so if anybody would like to come on
1:51
Sunday and have some fun with that they
1:53
can get information on the Walky way
1:55
well kind of Facebook and Instagram and
1:57
all that now all funds raised on that
2:00
day so the cake is sponsored and the
2:03
coffee is sponsored and the drinks are
2:04
all sponsored anything we can sell on
2:06
that day all the money goes to Cancer
2:09
Care Javier and these two fantastic
2:12
Walkers hikers pilgrims whatever you
2:15
want to call them um or whatever you
2:17
guys want to call yourselves I'm sure
2:18
you'll explain um they're also
2:21
fundraising for Cancer Care havv you so
2:23
not only are they doing it as a as a
2:25
personal Challenge and a dream come true
2:27
they're also creating an amazing amount
2:29
of awareness around the charity Cancer
2:31
Care Java which is is local to us here
2:33
in this community and um looking for
2:36
people to donate a few quid as well to
2:37
help the nursing team who do such great
2:40
work in the community so that's my pie
2:43
said basically and I'm going to give
2:45
this Pew this seat up to Glenn and let
2:48
them take over and uh give you a chance
2:50
to talk because you know what I'm like
2:52
when I get a mic well yeah I was I was
2:54
about to say if I could get a word in
2:56
but um oh I'm off then thanks for that
2:58
douge you know I'm already joking we
3:01
love you um now Okay so we've got uh
3:05
Glenn and gwendolin did I get that the
3:08
right way around no obviously um now you
3:10
know The Proclaimers once said I would
3:12
walk 500 miles and then I'd walk 500
3:15
more but you know okay there is a
3:17
difference between kilometers miles but
3:19
I think you're going to do better than
3:21
them because if they'd have carried on
3:23
where they were in LEF they would have
3:25
drowned they didn't think it through but
3:27
you obviously have well we thought it
3:28
through we're certainly not going to go
3:30
too far beyond Santiago otherwise we
3:33
will exactly start to cross the Atlantic
3:35
exactly yeah um no it is we tried to
3:39
view it in terms of of kilometers
3:41
because we're now live here in Spain
3:43
we've been here for a long long time we
3:45
lived in Galia as it so happens uh since
3:49
2001 when we went to work there and it
3:52
was going to be a onee working program
3:56
the the project went on and on and on
3:58
and eventually in some some time in the
4:00
Millennia 2000 we were lucky enough to
4:03
retire and we were living up there we
4:06
sold everything in England and we said
4:07
where did we go now and what did we do
4:10
we bought a yacht and did some sailing
4:12
around the rear of Gia and then one day
4:15
my dear lady wife here gendin she's the
4:17
one of the trousers I'm the one with the
4:19
dress by the way okay she said why don't
4:22
we sail around the Mediterranean I said
4:24
what a great idea just go close the
4:25
front door and we'll be off and then
4:28
when we got down here years after
4:30
sailing around we're living here for
4:32
four years in Javier and she says to me
4:34
one day why don't we walk back to Gia
4:37
and I said have you been taking
4:38
something
4:40
dear that was it and that is how it's
4:43
all started yes we sailed away and we're
4:46
walking back basically okay so what
4:50
actually started all this really uh I
4:53
think because we had parents-in-law
4:55
living in Javier and we were living in
4:58
Galia and we were con stly whizzing
5:00
across Spain uh taking a different route
5:03
each time we love the we love Spain we
5:05
love the country it's so varied and
5:08
beautiful and we never had time to look
5:10
at it so we kept saying one day we'll
5:13
walk this you know and just take our
5:16
time so we're not rushing this we're
5:17
expecting it to take us 4 months if it
5:20
takes us six it doesn't matter you know
5:22
so when you say walk this you you did
5:24
actually bring the Camino San well
5:26
that's that is a very easy way to walk
5:29
because if ever there's a choice there a
5:30
little yellow arrow to tell you which
5:32
way to go isn't there or a shell thank
5:34
goodness for that I think I'd get lost
5:36
definitely I mean it's something I've
5:37
been meaning to do forever but I mean
5:40
it's taken you till come on now can we
5:44
say can we say how old you I can say how
5:46
old he is because he's older than me
5:49
he's 78 well I mean 1200
5:53
kilm well 78 are you have You' been in
5:56
training clearly we have been in
5:58
training it's fair to say
6:00
um but uh if we stopped and thought
6:03
about 1200 km too much I think we'
6:05
probably we wouldn't be here talking to
6:07
you today right the reality is it's like
6:10
life as it is you know what happened a
6:12
few minutes ago forget about it what did
6:13
in Winston Churchill say our Churchill
6:16
yes he had a a good good line that went
6:18
uh how'd it go now it's a mistake to
6:21
plan too far ahead we must deal with
6:24
each link in the chain of Destiny one at
6:27
a time and I think that's a very nice
6:29
idea because if we start thinking about
6:32
Toledo or AA right now he will probably
6:35
walk out of the front door trip over and
6:36
break my leg so there okay it's pay
6:40
Radio International and the video is
6:43
going to look a bit different now
6:44
because I've remembered to put the new
6:46
lights
6:47
on if you're listening to this it's
6:49
bright trust me anyway we're talking to
6:53
gendin and Glenn who are walking 1,200
6:57
kilm on the Camino De Santio
7:00
in Aid of Cancer Care so where did we
7:03
get to we didn't leave the front door
7:05
yet cly haven't got to Santiago yet
7:08
that's I think we were saying 1200 kilm
7:12
I and the 500 miles I think it's about
7:15
750 miles but we love kilometers because
7:19
you get them under your belt so much
7:21
faster don't you miles take to walk
7:25
absolutely so um have you have you had
7:28
some good advice from our Eve from walk
7:30
your way well indeed we have yes just
7:34
sort of uh listening listening to our
7:37
bodies uh taking note of every twin but
7:42
there are so many n can I can I pull you
7:44
back in here to to share a microphone
7:47
just for a sec um just you don't have to
7:50
go
7:51
anywhere musical chairs today in the
7:54
studio go on so so basically what is the
7:57
main advice on I would have two pieces
8:00
of advice on something this Mammoth yeah
8:02
and when I say listen to your body and
8:04
be aware of all those twinges aches
8:07
pains they're all messages being sent by
8:10
your body um to let you know how what
8:14
condition you're in now obviously we all
8:17
have the usual aches and pains we all
8:18
get up in the morning and that's stretch
8:20
and you can feel everything so I'm
8:22
talking about aches and pains are
8:24
twinges that you're not usually
8:26
accustomed to so anything extra or
8:28
anything that you feel is is sending you
8:30
an extra message don't ignore it take
8:33
heed because we've spoken about this
8:36
before haven't we that it's not a race
8:38
it is very much the journey so if you
8:40
need a day's rest two days rest whatever
8:42
you need take it because there's no
8:43
point pushing through pain and the
8:45
reason I'm very very um adamant on this
8:49
is because I did the opposite ah I you
8:52
you've done the whole thing I did not
8:54
listen to the messages and I messed
8:56
myself up I ruined my feet the Bliss
8:59
sisters became beyond the Beyonds I
9:02
ended up doing four days in my bare feet
9:04
cuz I literally would not listen and
9:06
would not stop and rest and I don't
9:07
think anybody needs to do that I don't
9:09
know what I was trying to prove to
9:10
myself there's nothing to prove on a
9:12
Camino what do you need to do to to
9:15
avoid your feet getting completely
9:17
blistered up and I guess I mean the guys
9:20
will have their shoes completely and
9:21
utterly broken in and um once again you
9:25
know things like wearing a shoe size
9:27
that's one size bigger than your usual
9:29
shoe size so that your feet can expand
9:31
in the heat making sure you've got socks
9:33
that are very friendly with your skin
9:35
type on your feet um taking as many
9:38
breaks as possible air your feet where
9:40
possible um some people use Vaseline
9:43
some don't there are foot products make
9:45
sure you've lots of
9:46
comped whoever invented comped there're
9:50
those blister plasters is well on their
9:53
way to to a comfortable lifestyle shall
9:56
we say um so yeah make sure you've got
9:57
your comped and like I say listen feel
10:01
it if you get a tiny burning if you get
10:03
a little message from that baby toe stop
10:06
and deal with it and give it the
10:07
attention and love and TLC that it
10:09
deserves so that's really just on a
10:11
physical um front I think on something
10:14
this long over a period of such great
10:16
distance and time another piece of
10:18
advice I would say to the guys is it's
10:22
okay to have time alone it's okay to say
10:26
today I'm going to walk ahead um you
10:29
know I'm going to take a couple of hours
10:31
and and just be alone it's okay to be
10:33
alone at times because the intensity on
10:36
a Camino Santiago in difficult
10:38
conditions can be a lot on any
10:40
relationship whether you're married or
10:42
not or it's just a friendship and so
10:44
therefore I think having that space and
10:45
I think you guys are are so you know
10:47
such a fantastic relationship you know
10:49
this already that together is wonderful
10:52
but it's also okay okay to tackle little
10:54
sections Alone um just because you know
10:57
you really don't want to start getting
10:58
on each other nerves if you're having to
11:00
do four months on the road together well
11:02
they do say you're going to find
11:03
yourself and you'll no doubt find things
11:05
out I mean you've been together how long
11:07
well can I just say that we were 6 years
11:10
on a 40 foot boat nonstop I was going to
11:13
say cuz that's quite couldn't go off
11:14
walking on your own that was a real a
11:16
real test for any relationship a 40 foot
11:19
boat well if it was a center cockpit
11:22
boat as well which is disin from the
11:23
usual ones which at the rear so if we
11:25
had a row in the center of the boat and
11:28
said that's it I've had I'm off you had
11:30
20 feet to go one way or 20 ft the other
11:33
way that's a very good way of stopping
11:35
an argument and saying oh well I going
11:37
say I was wrong
11:38
anyway get on
11:43
usually start that like the idea that
11:46
time alone yes I'll just jump in when I
11:49
walked with my little son Oscar who
11:51
never stops talking even more than me um
11:54
we had the 100 meter Rule and if it just
11:57
got too intense for both of us and we
11:59
just needed some space it would be shout
12:01
100 m and that meant just a little space
12:05
just some peace and quiet and it worked
12:07
wonderfully and we both respected that
12:09
rule really well obviously he was little
12:11
so I couldn't put him too far ahead I
12:12
had to have my eye on him so 100 meters
12:14
worked for us it was a great I like that
12:16
I like that a good idea yeah maybe 100
12:18
kilom I've got a I've got a message here
12:20
it says uh morning douge please tell
12:22
your guests Walking the Camino they will
12:25
have a wonderful experience and will'll
12:27
get as much out of it as the people they
12:29
doing it for um it's tough physically
12:32
and mentally and Far More Than Just a
12:34
Walk time constraints don't allow me the
12:36
time to walk the entire distance but
12:38
I've done the first section and the last
12:40
two leaving three more to do I wish them
12:43
Buen Camino and this is from Jane in
12:46
Oliva thank you Jane in Oliva that's
12:49
very nice bless sir let's quickly go
12:53
over where we can help raise money again
12:57
um now this bit of a shindig coming up
12:59
this Sunday isn't it yeah it's it's
13:02
actually uh you don't have to walk uh we
13:05
are leaving Javier at quter to 10 say
13:09
quter to 10 to walk the 10 or uh M
13:15
kilometers to uh hazus poy yeah uh if
13:19
you don't want to do the walk then you
13:22
can go straight to hazus PO and just
13:24
party and that's at 12 12: till 2 yeah
13:29
up at um what's The
13:33
addressor ne's house's house it'ses
13:37
house and there's Live party venue these
13:39
days oh yeah you know me go on yes the
13:42
meeting point is uh uh by the tourist
13:47
information office in the port uh
13:49
there'll be lots of people there so I'm
13:51
sure that people will figure out where
13:55
the uh the walk starts perfect excellent
13:57
and there's going to be cake there's
13:59
cake at the end of it yes we're going to
14:01
have our cake and we're going to eat it
14:03
yeah BR listen I wish you both well and
14:07
uh make sure you heed all that advice
14:09
because somebody that knows knows we
14:12
have the greatest respect for NE and
14:14
we've listened to everything she said
14:16
and I hope that we don't get any blisses
14:19
or need to pay any attention to all the
14:20
good advice she gave us well quite quite
14:23
listen I wish you all the luck in the
14:25
world from all of us here at Bay radio
14:26
of course and uh it's it's a Fant
14:29
fantastic Cancer Care charity that
14:31
you're doing it for so just leaves me to
14:33
say congratulations in advance because I
14:35
know you're going to do it thank you
14:37
douy thank you
