Bay radio Bay radio I'm pleased to be
0:03
joined Now by Pablo and Sarah from the
0:06
Red Cross who are on the line with us
0:08
today good afternoon Pablo and Sarah uh
0:11
how are you doing today hi thank you for
0:14
giving this space to Red Cross you're
0:16
very welcome indeed um perhaps you can
0:18
outline just a little bit about what
0:21
you've been dealing with over the last
0:23
few days how have the jaier Red Cross
0:24
been involved oh yeah all the
0:27
devastating floods in the Southeast
0:29
Spain are living a tragic balance of
0:32
people dead thousands of families
0:35
affected and um Red Cross has been
0:37
responding for the first minute
0:39
mobilizing uh specialist volunteers from
0:42
the emergency unit these are people
0:45
especially trained along the whole year
0:48
to have a a response capacity of less
0:52
than five hours in case of these cases
0:55
of disasters this is one of the
0:57
strengths of uh Red Cross so thanks to
1:01
these specialist volunteers we've been
1:03
mobilizing all available and necessary
1:06
resources temporary accommodation um
1:10
psychological assistance and
1:12
distribution of Aid it is a very
1:15
difficult situation on the ground we've
1:16
all seen the pictures on the TV like a
1:18
tsunami or like a hurricane the floods
1:21
of water just devastating those areas
1:25
how difficult is it to actually help
1:27
people we can see that a number of areas
1:29
are very hard to get to well definitely
1:32
is is a very difficult task but we are
1:34
well coordinated with the rest of
1:36
agencies and agents that are um working
1:40
in this emergency so uh thanks to this
1:43
coordination uh the work is well
1:45
organized and uh every day we kind we we
1:49
try to address more and more necessities
1:54
ground you said there are good
1:56
Communications there the the relief
1:58
effort then is is certainly kicked in
2:00
and going well that obviously it's taken
2:03
a little bit of time for uh everything
2:06
to get off and running and I know that
2:08
it's the immediate people that you're
2:09
dealing with Communications are great
2:11
but across the area I guess you're
2:12
working in isolation a lot of the time
2:14
on exactly your situation and and not
2:17
really getting an idea of the bigger
2:19
picture although I suppose that you can
2:21
imagine the devastation is the same
2:22
pretty much everywhere else where other
2:24
people are working well there are more
2:27
affected areas and less affected areas
2:29
at this moment Red Cross is focusing on
2:32
the most affected areas where access is
2:35
very difficult and where um people are
2:38
um have the most um compelling needs uh
2:43
these places are for instance torent or
2:47
um alas um so we are focusing
2:51
specifically in these areas but as soon
2:54
as these um um the the events will
2:58
unfold we will eventually what sort of
3:01
numbers of people are you having to get
3:03
into shelter bigger efforts in in other
3:06
areas how many people are we talking
3:08
about we have a one shelter more or less
3:10
1,000 people okay that's quite a lot of
3:13
of people to deal with we've been seeing
3:14
some collections going on in various
3:17
different parts of Spain and uh people
3:20
trying to help in various different ways
3:22
we we understand that um there are a
3:25
coordinated uh uh effort of people who
3:27
are actually being able to uh come in
3:30
and start to help with the cleanup of
3:32
the operation but what is it that the
3:34
Red Cross uh in Javier need right now
3:37
how can people help you directly oh
3:39
thank you for asking yes definitely Red
3:43
Cross uh needs a lot of help in this and
3:46
the most effective thing is uh Financial
3:50
uh support for the organization so in
3:53
each mement we can transform money into
3:56
uh um uh food or um tools or anything
4:02
that is needed in each moment of uh of
4:05
the evacuation and post disaster um
4:11
assessment and and dealing so uh we have
4:15
uh different channels for people to help
4:18
a Red Cross in this effort one is
4:21
through the telephone calling
4:27
971 or even through b Zoom uh to uh
4:33
33512 and there is also an SMS um a
4:37
channel uh that you can send an SMS with
4:40
the word Auda to the number
4:44
3892 these are all channels that can
4:47
really help Red Cross to transform uh
4:50
their support in uh anything that is
4:53
need and I'm hoping then that um that
4:57
effort or that Aid will get to you
4:59
immedi medely in help with the uh
5:01
situation you're in right now uh it must
5:03
be very tiring for the Red Cross and the
5:06
people that are helping you how how
5:09
difficult is it to get breaks and to to
5:11
find a little bit of time to relax well
5:13
definitely uh there are uh turns for the
5:16
volunteers so they are they can uh work
5:20
and uh they stay in uh in the ground 2
5:23
24 hours and then they have uh change
5:26
for other volunteers fortunately there
5:28
are a lot of these people trained and
5:31
prepared to uh collaborate with the CR
5:34
Ross um Red Cross so uh definitely it is
5:38
difficult but uh it's not in insinuating
5:41
well we really appreciate all the work
5:43
that the Red Cross and all of the other
5:45
volunteers and emergency services are
5:47
giving to the community and uh thank you
5:50
very much indeed for finding the time to
5:52
talk to us today uh and our best wishes
5:54
go to all the team Sarah and Pablo I
5:56
thank you very much for your time thank
5:58
you very much and thanks for helping us
