good morning this is Bay radio
0:01
International uh one or two people
0:03
noticing that a slight name change and
0:05
we may go some way towards explaining
0:07
that in just a few minutes time as we
0:09
make our way through this because I am
0:11
back not for the first time in the
0:12
headmaster's office with Chris Aken Lady
0:15
Elizabeth School Lees to you and me and
0:18
well welcome back I mean it feels like
0:19
we've just gone back after summer but
0:21
you've had half term already it it feels
0:23
like it's the first day of school
0:25
yesterday we it's been a really really
0:27
busy year so far um we've had uh uh lots
0:30
of wonderful learning happening in the
0:32
classrooms kids taking new courses that
0:34
they hadn't explored before in in the
0:36
upper part of the school um you know
0:38
year threes becoming year fours and and
0:40
and taking on more responsibility for
0:42
their their own learning and one of the
0:44
the most exciting programs in primary
0:46
that we're working on this year is
0:48
called opal which is outdoor play and
0:50
learning um and it's a it's a program
0:53
that its roots are there's a gentleman
0:55
from Scotland and he's created an
0:56
organization and it's being used
0:58
worldwide and and it's the whole idea is
1:02
you know our kids have as much time at
1:04
recess or on the patio as they would
1:06
call it here in Spain as they do
1:08
learning mathematics and so we really
1:10
should have a design to how we're trying
1:13
to help kids learn how to play interact
1:15
socialize with one another and also
1:17
allow them to pursue their interest and
1:19
their passion so it used to be well all
1:21
the year ones have to go over there and
1:22
all the year twos well where in in life
1:24
is it like that you know when you go to
1:26
a restaurant in the rnl and you walk in
1:28
do they say oh 40 three-year-olds oh you
1:31
you go over there you're having fish uh
1:33
41y old ma'am okay you're over there
1:34
you're having pizza you know they don't
1:36
break us into year cohort they they
1:38
allow us to you know enjoy what we want
1:41
to enjoy and it's the same thing in play
1:43
but that's I mean that as an adult after
1:46
maybe 30 it becomes you don't really
1:48
notice that but as kids kid but do do
1:50
they mix like year wise our kids have
1:53
always mixed and and it is by Design
1:55
that's part of our school design is to
1:56
have you know older kids modeling for
1:58
younger kids and have you know having
2:00
that but you want each kid to feel that
2:03
they've got a place in the school that
2:04
that you know when they come to school
2:06
it's like yeah I play Four Square over
2:07
there that's where that's where I do my
2:09
thing you know or my guys year nine we
2:11
roll with basket at break time and and
2:14
and we've got our game and you know
2:15
we're keeping keeping tabs so yeah I
2:18
mean school's got to be well equipped to
2:20
have play spaces that are appropriate
2:21
that's been one of the great new things
2:23
this year uh as well you know we've got
2:25
as I said new students and new families
2:27
that have joined us and they're
2:28
exploring uh course that perhaps they
2:30
didn't have on offer at the schools they
2:32
came from so you know digital design and
2:35
then photography and travel and tourism
2:38
and and and uh you know marine biology
2:41
these are courses that we have that are
2:42
really exciting for our older students
2:44
but also for a younger students you know
2:47
we we have a curriculum based with the
2:50
international primary curriculum that is
2:52
it's a framework so it's not saying we
2:54
do the same thing every year what we're
2:55
looking at is Big Concepts and big ideas
2:57
and we're bringing in new content
2:59
topical items things that you know we
3:01
have our kids in in in the lower school
3:04
that are doing not Tik Tock but Tik Tock
3:06
like um you know representations of
3:08
their learning so quick things that just
3:10
demonstrate how quickly they're catching
3:12
on to things and obviously weaving the
3:14
technology makes it exciting so we have
3:17
a what we call a pal's Workshop series
3:20
it's a parents as Learners yeah so Pals
3:23
and the idea is is kind of just giving
3:26
people some starting points because you
3:28
know for many of us as parents you know
3:31
we we we don't do anything different
3:33
than what we were told I mean when it
3:35
came time for me to look for un I did it
3:37
all by myself I didn't even tell my
3:38
parents where I'd applied right but I
3:39
had a really good guidance counselor
3:41
that I went to and he he helped me out
3:43
in my high school so for some of these
3:45
parents are like what's the first
3:46
question I ask these are the kind of
3:49
things at at this school that that we
3:51
try to give people that the leg up so
3:53
that that they can help their children
3:55
and and and be the best parents that
3:57
they can be and the kids can be a
3:59
successful they can be MH you touched on
4:01
one of two of the newer subjects
4:02
including photography now it was brought
4:04
to our attention this week mhm um that
4:07
one of your students in the GCSE
4:09
photography obtained the highest Mark in
4:12
the world yeah not just in Spain
4:15
around worldwide the world it is
4:18
extraordinary though isn't it well yeah
4:20
I mean it's it's there's some feathers
4:22
in the cap but uh you it's really
4:25
because of the work that that is done
4:28
all along the way you know those um the
4:31
results that uh our kids end up getting
4:34
are are great but they are a result and
4:37
a result is something at the end of a
4:38
long process and you know some of our
4:41
best results are not the best Mark in
4:43
the world they might be a passing grade
4:45
because the child has come so far we all
4:47
have different points of departure as I
4:50
say and different points of arrival so
4:53
yeah we're we're really proud of that
4:55
particular result but we're proud of all
4:57
the results so we have some uh top marks
5:00
in in Europe top marks in Spain top
5:02
marks in the world for our you know our
5:05
results but again as I said behind every
5:07
result there's a story you know I've
5:10
just graduated my my youngest daughter
5:12
and yes she just got into a wonderful
5:15
University of Toronto right um but you
5:18
know her journey along the way um this a
5:21
little emotional but I tell you when um
5:25
when she went into her dorm room in
5:27
Toronto I dropped her off at the end of
5:30
August and uh it was a 5
5:34
seconds she said dad I got this and she
5:37
walked into the room and she met her
5:39
roommate who now is her best friend T it
5:42
was the confidence that she had when she
5:45
went into that room and that confidence
5:49
is built on all the little touch points
5:51
that she's had along the way at a school
5:54
like this and all the other schools that
5:55
she's attended in her life so I've got
5:57
to thank her teachers from when we used
5:58
to live in Val when we used to live in
6:00
China when we used to live in Peru all
6:02
these things but it those are kind of
6:05
intangibles that a school can help
6:07
Foster in in kids and developing kids
6:10
because at the end of the day if your
6:11
kid is confident then they're going to
6:13
be able to take advantage of the skills
6:15
they have and build on them and make the
6:18
most of their experiences I just a
6:20
reminder for anyone that's not sure
6:22
because you're based in Spain um but
6:24
offering the British curriculum and as
6:26
an example you say your daughter was
6:28
able to go off to University in Canada
6:30
so you're building up to that and it
6:32
sets them up to go pretty much anywhere
6:34
well you know we we talk about our um
6:37
you kind of unique aspects at the school
6:40
things that make us maybe a little
6:41
different than other schools and one of
6:42
the things that we talk about is the The
6:44
Best of Both Worlds and that that was
6:45
the old line you know where we talked
6:47
about the best of British education the
6:48
best of Spanish education well the best
6:51
of British education is and the best of
6:54
Spanish education is the best of an
6:55
International Education so we pull on
6:57
you know we we use curriculum that we we
7:00
pull on from the best of American
7:02
Education from Australian curriculum
7:03
series from you know we're looking at
7:05
what are the best practices that you're
7:07
using in in Scandinavian schools when it
7:09
comes to teaching and learning um so our
7:12
program has a British curriculum
7:15
framework in that um you know at the at
7:18
the top end we use you know GCS and we
7:20
use a levels as qualifications but the
7:24
content that we're looking at is very
7:25
very International uh brings us on to my
7:28
little cheesy intro there cuz say we are
7:30
calling ourselves Bay radio
7:31
International because like the turn if
7:34
we're going to use um you know office
7:36
speak the demographic is Shifting
7:38
somewhat but it's you've always had a
7:40
diverse Community here at the school as
7:43
far as the the families go it's it's
7:45
it's quite amazing you know we uh we we
7:48
keep track of the different demographics
7:50
and and possibly the easiest way to take
7:52
a look at the the changes over the years
7:55
you know all of the different flags that
7:56
we have flying out front those represent
7:58
a different National ity that's here in
8:00
the school now some there's only one kid
8:02
um we had a wonderful flag raising
8:04
ceremony for the kids from usbekistan we
8:06
had to go out and get their flag and
8:08
they were so excited when they got here
8:09
and we filmed it and everything two of
8:11
our new borders they're so proud of
8:12
their nation and they should be
8:14
represented with these flags and as one
8:17
parent said when they came up said it's
8:18
like the model United it's like the
8:19
United Nations around here I said well
8:21
well yeah it kind of is um that said you
8:25
know six years ago seven years ago three
8:28
out of every four students at the school
8:29
were uh were UK Nationals from Essex or
8:33
Sussex or or Kent or Dorset or what have
8:35
you and um now they represent about 20%
8:39
of our student body uh sorry Spanish
8:42
Nationals are about 20% of our student
8:43
bodies a UK Nationals about
8:46
15% Uh Russian Nationals about 11 uh
8:50
Ukrainian Nationals have become our
8:52
fourth largest demographic at eight or
8:54
9% but actually our number one
8:58
demographic is other right so if you
9:01
took the top 10 but then you took 11
9:04
through
9:05
58 that's actually our largest
9:08
demographic and that kind of is a fairly
9:10
strong bellweather of an International
9:13
Learning Community Bay radio has always
9:16
been International what is changing is
9:19
the nature of the International
9:20
Community here yes you know it was
9:22
International in terms of people who are
9:24
from outside Spain but many of those
9:26
people spoke just English yeah right
9:29
whereas now we've got people who speak
9:32
English and Dutch MH Andor French or
9:35
German and and you know they're well
9:38
educated they want to come here because
9:40
it's a wonderful place to live and and
9:42
people who have a very Global outlook on
9:45
life and they need to have a places or
9:50
resources to go to I would say bay is a
9:53
place to go to and you can turn on your
9:55
radio you get in your car and you can
9:56
listen to music you like or that will
9:59
inspire you that's different H that's in
10:01
the language that that you know that's
10:03
in common English and there's a there's
10:06
a huge parallel here with our community
10:08
but 58 nationalities if you to sit
10:10
someone down and say name 58 countries I
10:12
could do it I could totally do it You'
10:14
think
10:15
yeah I can't do the United States
10:18
remember there was one trying to do the
10:19
50 can't do it always forget Delaware
10:22
everyone forgets Delware yes of course
10:23
but also I mean we know about the
10:25
facilities here because we've talked
10:26
about it before you've been on but um
10:28
they they are a base for offering
10:30
extracurricular activities you're
10:33
calling the plus clubs this be this
10:34
comes into it yeah we got over 50 plus
10:36
clubs we got I was just speaking with
10:38
Liam Williamson who's our our plus
10:39
club's coordinator and and just the
10:41
numbers this term are are through the
10:44
roof so we got all kinds of teachers who
10:47
are running plus clubs I'm doing
10:49
basketball on Thursday afternoon got to
10:51
do my Hoops club uh but we've also got
10:54
um outside external providers that come
10:57
in you know Taekwondo and and these kind
11:00
of things um robotic kids so all of our
11:04
plus clubs are really under the four
11:06
pillars of you know sport um the arts
11:10
service activities and then kind of
11:12
academic clubs and so there's something
11:15
for everyone we've got uh Spanish dance
11:17
uh we got younger ones but I just saw
11:19
the kids coming across the road with
11:21
Diego yamas they're going to uh do his
11:24
uh special science club and that they do
11:27
for the younger ones and we have the
11:29
best facilities and some would say in in
11:32
many of our facilities are the best in
11:33
Spain but definitely in this area but as
11:36
I as I always say moody they're just a
11:39
bunch of buildings until we fill them
11:41
with kids and program and lots of stuff
11:44
that we can do in them you know that's a
11:46
lovely 450 seat theater yes but when you
11:50
hear a kid singing in there doing a solo
11:52
that's when it
11:53
becomes that place you know what I mean
11:56
I still have a mental image of the fun
11:57
science club I can it's only matter of
11:59
time before he does the one where you
12:01
you drop a bit of cesium into water oh
12:03
yeah no we do that we we we've we've set
12:05
off the fire alarms yes I'm sure those
12:07
are the days that the kids come home
12:08
with a story to tell you know yeah now
12:10
what we're building up to here is the
12:12
open day yeah I mean it's what we've got
12:14
you at this particular time just a week
12:16
away yeah uh give us the date and some
12:18
of the details oh you're questioning me
12:20
on the dates um that's I got to yeah
12:23
it's the 30th it's 30 yeah we've got our
12:26
uh we've got our open house and um for
12:29
perspective families what we try to do
12:31
is you know we'd like to have people
12:33
come up to the school see what are you
12:34
interested in oh my son is is really big
12:37
in the theater it's like okay well then
12:39
we're going to make sure that we have an
12:40
orientation for you on our arts program
12:42
so that you you understand what we have
12:44
or we we might have a family that well
12:46
my son's really into languages he loves
12:48
he he speaks four languages like great
12:50
let's have you have a sit down with a
12:52
German teacher let's have a sit down you
12:53
right and we can we can have that kind
12:55
of conversation so we do have the the
12:58
the open house coming up on the 30th and
13:00
what we've done is we' put that out
13:02
there and we say who's interested and
13:04
once we get the interest from the
13:06
different groups then we tailor our
13:08
orientation so we're going to have an
13:10
orientation at present we want to have
13:12
one for early years for families who are
13:14
interested in early years families are
13:16
interested in primary secondary and then
13:18
six form and of course they'll all get
13:20
together and we'll have a general
13:22
plenary where we introduce the school
13:24
and the staff and those kind of things
13:25
but then we want to get right into the
13:27
classes and see what's going on yeah
13:29
because this is daytime this is not an
13:30
evening thing this is 9:3 you want to
13:32
come see the school you want to see the
13:34
school in action you want to see what
13:36
you know what where's the commodor what
13:37
do these kids eat what do they have you
13:39
know and and but also what's you get to
13:41
see what should what your child would go
13:44
into at their AG no and and we want to
13:45
introduce those children to kids who are
13:47
here and say this is this is unfiltered
13:49
why don't you talk to Philip why don't
13:50
you talk to Serena why don't you talk to
13:52
Maria and and learn from their
13:54
experience because the best
13:57
spokespeople for your school are the
14:00
kids who are learning in it because
14:02
they're living the reality good or bad
14:04
you know let's be fair you know no
14:07
school is perfect any school says
14:09
they're perfect I'm sorry they're maybe
14:12
they're just looking at a single lens
14:15
but you have to look at everything
14:16
because when you're dealing with th
14:18
1,330 kids wow you know almost 200 staff
14:21
on a regular basis we got 270 staff that
14:23
I got to write Christmas cards for you
14:26
know right I do them by hand I'm famous
14:28
for that
14:29
it just kills me by the end of December
14:31
but you know speaking to kids is the
14:34
best way and that's going to be a big
14:35
part of our open house uh we have
14:37
student ambassadors that have put their
14:39
hands up and say hey I was new two years
14:41
ago I wouldn't mind helping out because
14:43
I know how difficult it can be just to
14:45
the thought of coming to a new school
14:46
but it's not that bad it's actually kind
14:49
of exciting I mean anything we've talked
14:51
about then the facilities and some of
14:53
the classes that are offered um they can
14:56
see for themselves but you want to hear
14:57
from them in advance before yeah no I
15:00
mean hey if someone comes up on any day
15:02
they're welcome to come on in we'll get
15:03
them yeah sure but for this particular
15:04
day signing up online for this one yeah
15:06
we got catering so we want to make sure
15:08
we get the right number of muffins and
15:10
but uh yeah so if they can just there's
15:13
there's lots of different Pathways to
15:14
register interest one of them is through
15:16
our website another one uh we've got uh
15:19
a special advertising feature where
15:20
there's you know QR codes that people
15:22
can click on and then it'll take them to
15:24
a a signin page and then what we try to
15:26
do is as much work as we can in front of
15:29
these events to find out what are you
15:31
interested in what what do what do you
15:33
need to see yes or no when you come here
15:36
so that you can tick off that question
15:38
that you have because there'll be new
15:40
questions that come up as they come here
15:41
they'll be like oh how does that work
15:42
over there what's up with that class uh
15:45
can you tell me more about that so well
15:47
any new families to the area then or
15:49
maybe someone listening online uh
15:52
relocating soon uh you get the chance to
15:54
come and see all this for yourself 30th
15:56
of November um 9:30 till 11:00 in the
15:59
morning and if possible can you register
16:01
in advance in no in no way do I have a
16:03
vested interest in this but give us a
16:05
follow on social media because uh
16:07
everything we go through there all all
16:08
the info and all of our social media you
16:10
can find us on Facebook
16:12
andol yeah LinkedIn uh the other thing
16:15
the easy one is just
16:17
www.s.edu does and go to our website and
16:21
and and there's a pop up uh about our
16:23
open day um as I said though I want to
16:26
make sure that you know if if a family
16:28
is interested in the school and that day
16:29
doesn't work don't worry just get in
16:31
touch with us and we'll we'll make our
16:32
own mini open day but you know it's a
16:35
pragmatic thing too to if there is a
16:38
family that is interested in in looking
16:40
at a place in the school um places are
16:43
becoming a little bit more challenging
16:45
because we're we're getting full many
16:48
this year we're we're in a really great
16:50
spot we still have some spaces in the
16:52
school but we're robust but we're not at
16:55
at waiting lists where as last year we
16:57
had that situation so we've opened up a
16:59
few more forms and hired some more staff
17:02
and so we had a little bit more spread
17:04
out but um it's definitely something if
17:07
you know for families who approach Us in
17:09
the summer it can be very tricky uh we
17:12
might have places for some of the
17:14
children but not another child sure and
17:16
that's always difficult but um yeah so
17:19
the earlier the better it's so my dad
17:21
always used to say you know it wasn't
17:23
raining when Noah built that Ark you
17:25
know my dad was he had more on liners
17:29
tend to have lots of Expressions M's the
17:31
same so yeah Chris good to talk to you
17:33
it was great to have you back yeah yeah
17:34
it's been great to sit down and maybe
17:36
I'll get down to Bay radio International
17:39
Studios and and see how things are going
17:41
well done with the branding thank you
17:42
very much
