so here we go now you can tell it's uh pre-recorded
0:11
and it's on a Sunday because look I haven't even done my hair look at that so anybody that joins us on YouTube they
0:18
can see the state of my Barney and the fact that it's Sunday and I'm chilling
0:23
right out and I've got my salsa dance your ass off t-shirt on
0:31
we need to blur that ass word I'm not sure if we're allowed to say arsenal in
0:37
this context I think we're all right you know a big donkey isn't it a nurse is a big donkey what's wrong with that
0:43
exactly in fact there was a there was a song Years Ago by Groove Armada called I
0:49
see you baby shaking that ass how cruel I know anyway
0:55
so yeah I am so happy to be here although I have to say I was slightly
1:01
confused when you said it was Sunday do you ever lose track of the days yeah all the time and also it's Easter Sunday and
1:10
I think this is my first Easter Sunday in the history of my beat years that
1:16
I've not had an Easter egg oh I never have them I never I never
1:22
understood the the link what was what's the link between uh gorging on chocolate and um
1:29
and a man with a beard coming out of a cave or something bunny rabbit it's all
1:36
about the bunny rabbit the Easter but because I'm away and I'm not at home the
1:42
Easter Bunny hasn't been able to find me right that'll be it so I'm obviously when I get home
1:48
there's going to be a big fat oh chocolate egg sitting on my doorstep I
1:54
can't wait yeah so I am delighted to be here because I was unwell last week
2:00
Dougie my voice Miracle recovery
2:06
I gave it um it felt like I was breathing glass
2:13
and felt like I had razor blades in my throat but it wasn't anything particular
2:20
it was some unbeknownst virus one of these things I picked up I had traveled back to the UK I had done trains planes
2:27
automobiles the usual um and you know the tube in London several times and then back again so all
2:35
that traveling small can find places considering I'm used to living in the countryside and only breathing beautiful
2:41
fresh air it was a massive blow to my system obviously picked up a little bug
2:48
um I gave it the two days that I only ever allow for illness and unfortunately
2:54
they happen to coincide with the day when we were supposed to be doing our lunchtime lifestyle lab so I missed you
3:02
Dougie it's been too long well it does seem like it's been a while does seem like it's been a while and you're
3:08
actually a way away at the moment um enjoying an Easter break yeah I'm
3:14
enjoying an Easter break this is my first time hands-free without children in 18 years no kids yeah no kids they're
3:23
all in other countries they're all visiting friends and family I feel like a it's like a rebirth I feel like a new
3:31
woman and I have to say I am really enjoying where I'm at because it's a beautiful place in the countryside it's
3:38
full-on reservoirs Rivers forests uh tracks and trails I'm in my element
3:46
so I'm just nice for walking then do you know what it is but you can only do it early in the morning it's
3:52
surprisingly hot here if you're on the Costa Blanca there is some or in Spain there's something gone wrong with their
3:59
thermometer this Easter and we were hitting 30 degrees and it's April hello
4:05
yeah yeah it's been warm so yeah we've been walking in the morning chillaxing in the afternoon and I've been doing
4:13
funny old stuff like I didn't a line dancing class yeah I feel like I know
4:18
it's great uh brilliant uh back to reality on Tuesday but I've still got a
4:24
couple of days to enjoy this Freedom loving it uh hi kids I love you I really do I really miss you kids
4:30
fantastic so the life lab what have we got on the agenda today well do you know
4:36
what um I wasn't feeling particularly sorry for myself when I was sick but I was feeling a little bit sorry for
4:42
myself and I thought maybe we could focus on that a little bit you know just to give myself a little bit of an extra
4:47
milking time in that it would be nice to talk about natural remedies and ways we
4:55
could focus on getting ourselves better because I did say to you a minute ago
5:00
that I gave it you know it's mandatory two days and then I said and now it's enough
5:06
kick the illness out the door it's time to crack on with life and um I think
5:12
it's really interesting to look at one's mindset when one is ill you know because
5:18
I don't wear it well at all I I don't accept it I don't enjoy it I barely
5:24
allow it um but some people tend to embrace illness illness a little
5:31
bit better or more and it's it's it's it's a question of why would you do that well maybe you
5:37
work dreadfully hard and something like a cold might come along or a virus might come along and you might need to look
5:45
upon it as a gift and you might need to say to yourself actually I'm going to take this I'm going to stay in bed for a
5:51
week because you know it's a message from somebody or something saying slow down dude but uh yeah so I'm of the opinion that
5:59
our mindset is a huge important factor in you know the length of time that it
6:04
takes us to recover or how we recover um I think or it is sad that there's a
6:10
growing body of medical and scientific research that shows that you can heal
6:16
yourself to an extent with your own mind now people might say what's all that
6:22
quackery you know enough out here it's only rubbish or she's talking a load of cards while maybe I am maybe I'm not but
6:29
I truly believe that I personally have um healed myself from my colds and my
6:36
viruses because I just won't tolerate them enough is enough so as soon as I'm
6:42
ready or as soon as I feel capable to get outdoors I do it rather than wallow
6:48
indoors or stay in my bed longer than is necessary I say right even though my breathing's not good and
6:54
even though I'm not feeling fit enough I am going to go for a walk so you know I think mindset is a very
7:00
important um factor in how we get ourselves ready the thing is you know as well that that
7:05
positive mental attitude and um and that way of thinking it releases
7:10
endorphins and endorphins you know they ease pain and they are
7:15
healing so that kind of makes sense from a science perspective doesn't it you know so think positive when you're sick
7:21
rather than be overwhelmed if at all possible try to think positively know that you'll get over with uh know that
7:28
you can battle it and fight it and recover and I think that you're you're setting yourself up for a better journey
7:35
through whatever illness you might have um the other thing that's very interesting is
7:40
as an example of why this might be true or proof of why this might be true is
7:45
the whole idea of the placebo effect so you'll have two people with the same
7:52
whether it be allergies whether it be a little illness or whatever it might be and they're both given a pill one's
7:59
given the red pill one's given the blue pill one is the real medication and one is the placebo now why is it that
8:05
repeatedly and over and over again it's been proven that this placebo effect the
8:10
person who's taking nothing at all you know it could be a bit of sugar in a capsule whatever it might be and they
8:16
themselves feel better and have a recovery what is that yeah they think they think themselves better think
8:22
themselves better it's it's positivity I mean some doctors advocate for you know using your mind to heal yourself and
8:28
some say you're deluded so I'm you know I personally try my best to use my mind
8:34
to help me get better um hypnotherapy is another great example
8:39
people use it for all types of ailments and um whether it be disease or whether it
8:45
be phobias or whether it be you know whatever condition hypnotherapy is a fantastic way it's how we access our
8:51
subconscious mind so we use a very tiny little bit of our nugget you know that small bit of
8:58
conscious mind that we use there's this amazing computer this amazing CPU this
9:05
Processing Unit called the subconscious mind and when we use hypnotherapy we access the power of our subconscious
9:12
mind which isn't something all of us understand completely but you know there's an awful lot of power in our
9:19
subconscious mind and that's why people use it to help with recovery so yeah there's a lot to be said for
9:25
healing ourselves there's a load of books out there that you can read and some of them are really excellent some of them are a little bit too like I said
9:32
before quackish so you know but there's lots of information online you can read about how your positive mental attitude
9:38
how your approach and um your way of thinking about your illness will will
9:43
have an effect on how and when you recover I thought that was an interesting thing we could talk about
9:49
what do you reckon doggy well um it's uh it's funny you should say this because it was World Health day uh
9:56
last Friday and I had a couple of doctors on with me and we were chatting
10:02
about very similar things in fact and I mentioned a favorite book of my God
10:07
anti-cancer a new way of life which um not only deals with that positive
10:12
mental attitude but couples that together with changing your lifestyle
10:18
completely or changing your diet for main mainly
10:24
um and it was written by a guy called Dr David
10:29
serve and Schreiber that's it and um it's great book it's I recommend it to
10:34
anyone not just people that are going through a cancer or or anything like that but um this this book deals with
10:44
um pre-war farming methods talks about that and how things have changed
10:49
um you know since then and how that really does affect how you feel and how
10:58
you respond and um a lot of these uh additives and things
11:03
that get past the Food and Drug Administration um you know they go tick and they yeah
11:10
put it on the supermarket shelves and people don't read labels when they go shopping they just go yep yep we'll have
11:16
that and that and that and that but what I'm saying is that that book deals with all of that but it also deals with the
11:23
positive mental attitude as well now when I was uh rather poorly some years ago I I don't know whether it was a
11:30
natural reaction where I just thought well okay this is what it is
11:36
are we going to deal with it what what are we going to do of course um not not
11:41
everyone can do that I mean some people go oh damn um I'm Ill yeah
11:49
yeah it depends on how emotionally strong I suppose you are or what other
11:54
factors you've got going on in your life your support system how happy you are in
12:00
yourself there's so many factors to consider if you're given a diagnosis or something serious it's incredible
12:05
because you can have two people they're given the same diagnosis on the same day and have you'll have one person say well
12:10
I'm going to beat this and you can have the other person who can be absolutely crippled with fear and not even know how
12:16
to approach it um and we can take ownership of that in
12:22
a way and try to do our own research and try to get our heads into the right place
12:27
and I think doctors and the medical profession are much more focused on that now rather than just focusing on the
12:35
Pharmaceuticals and I'm not knocking Pharmaceuticals they work you know they have saved so many lives in so many
12:41
different ways but I do love the fact that doctors now are focusing on the power that you have on your nutrition on
12:50
exercise I love that oncologist now are prescribing movement and walking as part
12:57
of your treatment plan they're not just saying oh and you should do a bit of exercise oh yeah don't forget to go for
13:03
a walk they're actually saying what I need you to do as part of your treatment plan is to walk three times a week for
13:08
40 minutes so they're being very direct and clear when they're prescribing what type of exercise you should do to help
13:16
improve your recovery um you spoke about you know the nutritional thing we have so much power both in
13:25
what diseases we may have or get and in how we recover for
13:31
from them and one of the main things is what you eat you are what you eat I mean
13:36
we all know that you know the whole an apple a day keeps the doctor away I can throw loads of cliches at you but it's
13:42
true and I'm not telling anybody today or tomorrow to completely radically change
13:48
their diet but you can slowly slowly eliminate certain things and add certain
13:55
things one of the buzzwords that we're all loving and it's been kicking around for quite a while is superfoods who
14:03
doesn't love the sound of that um they can't fly but they are the
14:09
superheroes of nutrition um and I I eat them all they're on my
14:14
list and I eat them if not every day a couple of times a week because firstly they're delicious and secondly they make
14:22
me feel good they make me feel like I'm treating myself well when I eat
14:27
c-r-a-p I feel like c-r-a-p you know when I have a bad day and I'm feeling
14:34
emotionally weak and I shovel the chocolate in or I eat too much sugar or I Gorge myself on cake it gives me a
14:41
moment of relief but ultimately I don't feel great about myself and I don't feel great physically but when I eat these
14:47
superfoods I just feel like I'm looking after my temple so so these are foods
14:53
that are rich in nutrients um fiber antioxidants they do Miracles
15:00
and wonders for our bodies and like I say they're delicious things like blueberries
15:06
um broccoli no some people are cringing at the thought of broccoli who doesn't love eating a little tree garlic
15:13
avocados leafy greens so throw spinach raspberries are particularly good
15:18
gorgeous I mean raspberries all those berries Ginger is brilliant um so you can drink it you can make a
15:25
tea out of it you can do it in your curries you can have it with your sushi get loads of Ginger into yourself beetroot
15:31
throw walnuts on your salads quinoa
15:36
it's another fancy one I wasn't brought off up on quinoa I can tell you I was
15:42
brought up I was brought up on a Duke a dookie beans and black eyed peas and stuff like that my mother decided she
15:49
was gonna um uh experiment with macrobiotic cooking
15:55
not always particularly successfully I can tell you that you can imagine right as a kid around so 11 12 years old
16:04
um being presented with a plate of dookie beans and just veggies and black eyed beans I mean
16:12
Gray but she didn't quite get the hang of it for a bit for quite a while and we were
16:19
a great guinea pigs well and you survived and look at you you're a great time I'm still here I'm
16:26
still here so I can't complain but well she had the right idea and that was probably quite a while ago now
16:32
everybody's talking about lentils and beans and they're nutritious and they're full of fiber and they mean we're not
16:38
eating the high carbohydrates and that you know the the spuds and the pastas
16:45
and the Rices which are all great as well in moderation if you can replace a little bit of your Spud and your pasta
16:51
and your rice with your beans or lentils it's gonna serve you better um if you're a fish eater salmon
16:58
brilliant you know it's a great superfood it's one of the top of the list if you if you need your protein and your antioxidants and it's full of
17:04
nutrients these Foods they're not disgusting you know there might be one or two of them there that you're not loving
17:10
um easy as well to add superfoods like seeds chia seeds and the Goji berries as
17:15
well just you know chop them in your yogurt or throw them on your breakfast cereal or whatever way you want to hide
17:21
or disguise them from the kids you can do so throw them in The Bolognese they're not going to know
17:27
um these are easy they're accessible they're not overly expensive they're natural they're not processed and
17:34
they're a great way of looking after your health you have the power nobody's Force feeding you you can decide what
17:41
you put in your mouth and that's going to help you feel better avoid disease and heal quicker from illness so yeah I
17:47
I love my superfoods do you know um I wasn't quite sure how our conversation
17:52
would go so I put a little post out on my socials
17:58
saying to because I was looking for sympathy so I put a little post out on our social saying that I hadn't been
18:04
well and that you know I had to to boot and that I was feeling much
18:09
better and that I felt you know that I had taken control Etc blah blah blah and I reached out to people to see if they
18:15
had any questions about their health and natural remedies so I got a whole I got
18:21
a fair few not Millions now because it's just me but I got a couple of questions that I thought we could cover Dougie do
18:27
you think we have time yeah sure so we had a question from Helen and
18:33
she's in Western super mare which I don't know that's in the UK somewhere sounds very good I love Western great
18:38
big long Sandy miles of beaches all right well she's a a great swimmer so
18:44
that might make sense um she says I've had a lung infection and I can't seem to get over it I
18:52
finished antibiotics and now I'm taking a mix of over-the-counter remedies I want yeah here we go I want to get
18:58
back to my swimming quickly any tips so we're talking about the lungs aren't we
19:04
really generally she's had a lung infection um lots of viruses hit the lungs colds
19:10
pneumonia there's all types of stuff we're gonna hit our lungs now I'm going to take it right back to the thing that
19:16
I love the most and that's walking I knew you were going to say that something I know right
19:22
because we exercise to have slim bottoms and we exercise to look good and we
19:30
exercise to have fun but did you know that physical exercise is probably one of the best things you can do for long
19:36
Health you might as well you know exercise your organs as well as you know
19:42
your your outer body so this is so important if you want to avoid you know
19:48
long issues be fit give your lungs the exercise they require but also if you're
19:54
suffering from a lung infection like I was there last week my lungs were in bits they ached they really hurt when I
20:00
breathed but as soon as I felt capable even though my lungs were at me I went out and I exercised because that deep
20:08
breathing this is nice you know it clears the
20:13
sputum yeah yeah you know that phlegm and that's what you want you want to get rid of that gun go to your lung selfie
20:20
thing is going to quickly loosen the flame and get it out and you can spit it
20:25
up or you can blow your nose or whatever you need to do so don't be afraid if you're feeling rough and your lungs
20:30
aren't great don't be afraid to get out and exercise you know some of us might be reluctant to think oh I'm not capable
20:36
or that can't be good for me it's you know you've got to change your thinking completely on that as soon as you can
20:42
get out and give your lungs the exercise I'm walking at a fairly gentle Pace isn't going to be over taxing is it no
20:50
gentle or as much as you're comfortable you know if you can breathe deeply you're going to get deeper into your
20:56
lungs and clear the phlegm so if you can build up a bit of pace and increase your breathing that's even better you know so
21:02
that's one of the and it's giving your body oxygen it's oxygenating your whole um blood you're filling yourself up with
21:08
your blood oxygen that's fantastic you know you're given your immune system a boost
21:14
um so yeah there you are go for a walk fixes everything told you um so Helen do that get out walking as
21:21
soon as you can get out and I'm not you know don't go running too soon or don't over exert yourself but get out walking
21:27
and exercise listen to your body listen to your body and listen to Neve and doggy
21:33
um another thing that's great is green tea a fantastic one for the lungs so I think
21:40
a lot of people drink really tea anyway it's great antioxidant but it's a really good one for the lungs anti-inflammatories as well because if
21:47
you think about it your lungs they are you know your Airways they're inflamed so any foods that are anti-inflammatory
21:54
oh love it live by turmeric every day to get to get turmeric to work properly you
22:00
have to mix it with um pepper and oil but the oil needs to be slightly heated
22:06
so it really reacts with the turmeric so the I I have been because because of
22:13
that and because of time restrictions and all that and it I was told years ago that you needed 16 of the little
22:20
turmeric roots and you need to Stew them and you need to prepare them and all that and I went oh for goodness sake I
22:26
don't have time for that time so I've been taking the capsules mixed with black pepper daily for must be 15 years
22:35
um and I swear by them you know I have been and I've had a great health touchwood she's knocking on her Noggin
22:41
I've got great health for for many many years so I do think everybody should Chuck turmeric into their morning
22:47
routine if they can yeah Long's steam therapy
22:52
um Helen as well is great one for your long health uh yeah that was a really good question
22:58
because I think right now A lot of people are affected with long health issues um another question that came in if
23:04
we've time for it yep was from Louise in Denia so she's local
23:10
to where I live um and this is something I think is very topical right now she says I suffer from
23:16
pollen allergies and I'm driven mad at four weeks I've tried the usual tried
23:22
and trusted medication from my Pharmacy but I can't seem to stop sneezing and my eyes are constantly swollen does anybody
23:29
have any magic solution no I'm I'm listening to this because okay um I've
23:35
today if I sound a little bit sort of nasally it's because yeah I've I've had
23:41
sneezing fits all day and I mean I'm not usually that bad with pollen but today has been
23:47
Dreadful I've been like streaming but um yeah not too bad at the moment but it's
23:53
been a whole day of it today well you're not alone right now there seems to be a mass of people complaining
24:00
about their allergies um so I think I thought it was a great thing to cover if we can quickly if we
24:06
have the time so doctors would if you've got serious allergies would um offer you maybe a monthly shot or you
24:15
know over-the-counter medications antihistamines and things like that but they don't always work and there are certain things you can do yourself
24:21
basically an allergy is when your immune system isn't quite working the same as everybody else's and doesn't react the
24:27
same two things like pollen dust mites pet Stander at mold spores etc etc and
24:34
you'll have a reaction you'll be Sneezy you'll be nasally and your breathing will be complicated
24:40
um as you're suffering from right now so guess what's top of the list doggy come
24:46
on exercise exercise well you know what it just so happens it
24:53
just so happens that in about about 20 minutes half an hour I'm going to be
24:59
walking with my dog for about um uh we usually do about just over an
25:05
hour on a Sunday would just pop down to the port and back and yeah that's uh that
25:11
should it's it it it it it'll certainly have but it seems contradictory doesn't it because if you've got a pollen
25:16
allergy you always imagine that you should stay indoors rather than get out there but you know if if
25:23
yeah exercise your lungs um obviously the best remedy for an allergy is to avoid the damn thing if at
25:30
all possible so if you've got a dust mite allergy you know stay out of Dusty areas etc etc but that's not always
25:37
possible so yeah for Louise in Dania I think one of the things people recommend
25:43
um is a stay-line irrigation nasty business but I know I have two kids with
25:49
allergies and as nasty and as messy as it is it really clears up their allergies for several hours especially
25:56
when they're sobering so suffering so a saline irrigation is a great one to give you a lot of relief long term during the
26:02
day and then I have a few little bits and pieces and we're kind of going back to superfoods again that are things you can
26:08
introduce yourself that are renowned for helping allergies one of which
26:15
and this one was a new one to me and I'm delighted I've discovered it because I'm going to bring it into my kids daily
26:22
routine it's a thing called butter bar butterbur have you heard of that one then look at
26:28
that I know I know exciting so it apparently it's a big green leaf and they used to use it to treat the
26:35
plague and fever in the 17th century but originally what they were using it for was to store butter in hot wet hot
26:42
weather so they'd wrap the butter in this Leaf so that's where it got its name butcherber and it's meant to be
26:48
fantastic now if you can get your hands on it you can stew it you can consume it that way or you can take it in capsule
26:54
form and from the little bit of research I've done it seems to be absolute magic for a whole
27:01
um plethora of breathing related allergies so let's get down the nature uh the natural remedy store and pick up
27:09
a bit of that uh probiotics acupuncture spirulina you may have heard of it it's
27:16
a nasty tasting business a lot of nasty you can put it in your Shake in the
27:22
morning I'm not doing it because it's green off but it tastes so strong so
27:28
again you can take that in capsule form and it's a great another antioxidant superfood so a great one to take for
27:34
allergies all the usuals peppermint eucalyptus all those things that are great for
27:39
breathing and clearing your navel cavities and nasal cavities nettle
27:45
another one that I was back in the UK recently and I was doing some Forest walks and the guy I was walking with he
27:51
who knew everything and anything about the nature around us and he picked up a nettle leaf and he rolled it up and he
27:58
