[Music] well hello everybody and welcome to the
0:15
May the Fourth be with you live and also actually it's my birthday so it's my birthday today so we combining uh Star
0:22
Wars Day let me move across a bit so I'm in the middle star Wars day and my birthday so it's interesting because my birthday is on May the 4th what I find
0:30
is I have people remembering my birthday uh that I worked with like 20 something years ago so that's quite fun so people
0:36
I've had messages from all of people that I'd even forgotten they even exist which sounds terrible but anyway so as
0:42
you may notice I'm not in my usual um place we're actually away for the weekend it's a it's a long weekend in
0:49
the UK um we were planning Richard to go down to the coast but the weather's from being really sunny and hot like 27
0:56
degrees Celsius during the week it's not plummeted right back down to like 9 or 10 or 11 degrees so we decided actually
1:02
we're staying rather bizarrely right the opposite side of London uh for those who know London near the O2 which is the big
1:08
Millennium Dome anyway that's probably more information than you're interested in um let's get into a couple of housekeeping bits and pieces before we
1:15
get stuck into the questions of which there are already some thanks for all the birthday wishes i won't um thank you
1:21
all individually as this whole live stream will be me uh saying thank you very much but let me do a couple of
1:27
quick housekeeping bits and pieces just reminder this is a live if you do have a question write the word question um so
1:33
that I can see it amongst all the birthday wishes and chit and chat amongst everybody if you're watching this afterwards just remind this is not
1:39
a normal video it's all based on Q&As's so you if you want to skip ahead you can
1:44
sort of scroll through and you'll see where the questions come up uh because I bring them up on screen so I want to do
1:50
a few bits and pieces i want to tell you that next week I'm very excited because I have a guest on the live stream next
1:55
week and it's Karen Laurel so those of you who don't know Karen Karen uh she's
2:00
online as cruise ship karen Karen is a uh she's worked on ships for many years
2:05
but she now specializes in port uh immersion port talks and I met her on
2:11
explorer 2 where she actually spends a couple of months so she's an independent port speaker she you know she doesn't
2:17
work for the cruise line she gets paid to go and do these talks and she spends a couple of months on board giving talks
2:22
some of the best talks if not the best port talks I've ever had and she very kindly agreed to come on next week because I get lots of questions about
2:29
port port immersion things to do in port so next week we'll focus even more so than usual on port so please join me for
2:36
that be usual time uh next Sunday also want to remind you about the giveaway that I have at the moment so it's based
2:42
on uh the Wonder Club which are these little tokens that you can collect by city by country so if you go to
2:49
tips.com/giveaway before the 14th of this month you can enter to win $125
2:54
vouchers off those and then um if you can't wait to see whether you get a draw
3:00
I'll announce the winners by the way on the live stream so you and I'm using a thing which is called uh I've forgotten
3:08
the name of the thing that's called now my mind's gone blank anyway it's a little thing where you input it and that it's an online system which then chooses
3:14
the winner so it's very fair so it's not me sort of going through um but also if you can't wait I do have very kindly
3:20
from the Wonder Club an offer between 10% and 30% off you just go to
3:26
wonderclub.com/t if you put in TFT code you'll get a minimum of 10% and up to 30% and in two weeks time I will
3:33
actually be on board Skype and the reason I'm bringing this up is just to remind you of my way but also because
3:38
there's a couple of questions linked to that that's a Paul and Carol love to travel group cruise so in two weeks time
3:46
I will be on board that it will be a Sunday so I'm hoping that maybe I will try and run a live stream from there
3:53
we'll see how that goes um based on once I see the schedule of events and things obviously want to attend as many events
3:58
Paul and Carol have organized as I possibly can so I think that's enough of the um housekeeping bits and pieces
4:05
let's get stuck into the questions so uh Caroline has a question
4:11
which is a more sort of general travel question um Caroline's got a Viking cruise to Australia New Zealand Bali i
4:18
know that itinerary actually I've looked at that it's a really nice itinerary one I would really like to do they do also
4:24
great circumnavigation of um of Australia which they don't seem to be doing after
4:30
this year which is a pity because it's a really nice one anyway um fine business very nice what would be our best options
4:36
for flight east or west best to Oakland so Karen I don't know where you're flying from uh to be honest so if you're
4:42
certainly west coast the easiest ways to go from LA um there's things like a New Zealand I think still fly that route uh
4:48
obviously if I'm when I'm going from the UK and from Europe I would tend to go the way that goes through Asia that way
4:55
uh round but certainly from the US often it's better to go via LA and onwards is
5:00
is kind of that seems to be the sort of the most efficient way and also from a time zone thing I think that may be a
5:06
little bit uh easier so Moo man
5:11
547 Mike and Carrie good to see you here um would you be happy with just being a
5:18
participant rather than a host for the upcoming Paul and Carol group cruise absolutely running a group cruise is
5:24
actually extremely uh tiring and can be a little bit stressful um just in terms
5:30
of you want to make sure that everyone's having a great time you want to make sure that you're putting on as many events hosting many events planning
5:36
events things behind the scenes never go to plan you know often the logistics the cruise line would have told you to bring
5:42
a certain type of adapter when you get on board it's going to be a different type of adapter and you haven't got that type and then they haven't set up you
5:49
know so there's all these kind of things that you got to make run you know seem to run seamlessly um also when you're
5:56
running a cruise I didn't really get to see any of the ports uh so it's going to be great just going uh as a participant
6:03
and seeing because I've never been on a group cruise as a participant so actually I'm hoping that by going as a
6:08
participant I'll also get a sense of as a participant things that I can fine-tune and tweak for my Panama group
6:15
cruise and hopefully one that I will do later next year as well u and also any
6:22
of course ideas that I can beg borrow or steal that Paul and Carol put on because obviously Paul and Carol are very different personalities to me they'll do
6:28
things very differently to me um so see if there's things that I see people liking so I'm really enjoying I'm really
6:34
looking forward to that um because it means I don't in the runup to the cruise like this two weeks that all I have to
6:39
think about is what I'm going to pack and what I'm going to take and am I going to make any videos when I'm away
6:44
kind of stuff so I'm really looking forward to it um uh and I say because it will be my first experience as a as as
6:52
an attendee so that that will be that will be great uh Chris I I think this is
6:59
a question yes uh good to see you here Chris um my travel agents tried to drag me off Amma and try Alaska i'm not a
7:06
Cday fan so what is your current favorite smaller ship that gets you to all the right places and best months to
7:11
go less crowd so basically um you're right you know with Alaska my favorite
7:18
route I'll tell you my favorite route first because it does sort of minimize sea days does maximize the amount of
7:24
time that you spend in Alaska is to do one of the one-way trips so you can do it from well they say Anchorage but in
7:32
reality there's two ports that are about an hour or so away from Anchorage one of which is Seward spelled S E A W R and um
7:41
uh why have I forgotten the name of that one because I've been there anyway remember it but there's two ports that
7:47
the the cruisers go out of and then you go down to Vancouver or of course you can do the other way around i like going
7:53
from from Seward uh way downwards because you get all the hassle of getting to Anchorage out of the way at
7:59
the beginning and there's a very nice train ride if you if your cruise doesn't include the the transfer there's some
8:05
very nice train rides that you can do down to join the ship um so but there's you do have a minimizing amount of sea
8:12
days going that way they tend to be sort of 10-day trips if you're going to Vancouver you'll normally have a C day
8:17
either end if you go out of Seattle you'll have at least one C day you'll probably call into Vancouver uh into
8:23
Victoria and so on so that would be my thing now in terms of smaller ships quite a few that do that so you Viking
8:29
which is what I've done before that's a 930 passenger ship ocean used to do it
8:35
um with Riviera but I think they sorry with um uh Riata but I think they've
8:41
switched that now to Riviera because they're sort of heading off those smaller ships to do other bits and pieces of things um so it's a slightly
8:48
bigger ship it's 1,200 passenger ship now you could if you want to Chris go uh
8:54
and do more of an expedition type thing so Hudig Gurin for example do it but you're not going to call on the sort of
9:00
the traditional Juno uh kind of uh Skagway uh places because they literally
9:08
go more off pie but you've also got Seabour does it as well i think they
9:13
quest they use it there um so those would be the ones to focus um on but you know you're right once you head even
9:19
into the you know Holl America do it but even now you've got Virgin but I would focus on those sort of small ship luxury
9:26
ships now I think I'm right in saying that Azamara has announced they're going back to Alaska and I think Winstar as
9:32
well so I would take a look at those because if you know on on uh Azamara you're talking 700 passengers bear in
9:39
mind you're going to have tiny little bathrooms uh on all but the suites uh but Windstar is a good one to look at i
9:45
can't remember if it's if it's Star Pride or which one they're using up there but that's what that's what I
9:50
that's what I would uh that's what I would suggest um Steve I cannot answer this
9:57
question but I'm sure other people can because I am not a fan of Indian food so I basically don't go to Indian
10:05
restaurants uh I'm not a big fan so um I don't know uh where is a good place to
10:12
go the only place that I would suggest you look at is there is a chain of
10:19
Indian restaurants um no I don't think they do they're more kind of fusion uh
10:25
stuff so if anyone has better suggestions on where to go for Indian food because I was like to make try to
10:30
make a recommendation uh and it's done making recommendations because I never go to Indian food restaurants so um if
10:36
anyone does have good suggestions please do pop those in there um I feel like I'm not answering
10:43
people's questions today so G Mayak do you have any recommended sites in around
10:49
Southampton we'll be on Region Grande and have two nights at the end of our cruise so one of the things that people
10:54
like to do is to go up to Stonehenge uh that's often the cruise lines will include that now I guess you're
11:00
disembarking so they may not have that but Stonehenge is really well worth a visit um sometimes you'll also have
11:06
excursions to off to Ssbury and so on so those really are some of the best things
11:11
to do now personally although it may be a little bit counterintuitive is quite near to Southampton you can get an Uber
11:18
there or you can actually book tours is Portsmith particularly if you want looking for something maritime based
11:23
because you got the Royal uh naval dockyards there which have things like um some of Nelson's ships there they
11:30
have Henry Dead's uh uh Mary Rose ship there which is fascinating which was dug
11:35
out of the mud and because it had been sunk in the mud as a battleship it is incredibly well preserved uh so that's
11:41
really fascinating also you've got the Spica Tower there which has incredible afternoon tea so so Portsouth is a
11:47
really interesting place because it's basically the the center of the Navy but that that's those are the things that I
11:53
would sort of uh focus on rangar asking the question let's
11:59
bring that up it's not coming up for some reason here we go how many cruises have you done in your life and how old
12:04
was your first so I have done 121 cruises the shortest being like sort of
12:10
a one night uh kind of uh shakedown cruise the longest being seven weeks so I've done 121 cruises uh so my next one
12:18
would be my 122nd and I was 40some when I did my first cruise so I did my first
12:24
cruise only back in 2004 so um so I was not young at all when I
12:31
started cruising i was not into I was typical of that whole thing cruising is
12:36
like roll people and all that nonsense um so so that's how that's so I started pretty pretty late there
12:43
um let's have actually the other thing I I thought of another Southampton option
12:49
which is um if you get the fairies you get like the red funnel fairies for example and you go to the aisle of white
12:56
where you've got Osborne House particularly which is really interesting which is where Queen Victoria spent a lot of her time after her husband passed
13:03
away and actually died in Osborne House that's really fascinating and then you've got things like the needles which is sort of a very interesting beach and
13:09
stuff so that's also quite fun uh Tom Tom is going to be on Crystal in
13:16
October fantastic your reason to visit Tangier on explore any recommendations so when I went to Tangier um I actually
13:22
didn't go on an excursion the reason is because in October into November but I'm doing a uh month-long trip from
13:29
Barcelona down to Cape Town uh which goes into Tangier so and I've got some excursions booked on that because with
13:37
Regent so they did have some really interesting excursions uh there to some
13:43
of the um uh uh not it's not temple my I don't know
13:50
why my mind's gone black obviously getting too old now my mind's going blank but they had some really interesting to some mosques or you could
13:56
go much further a field so I didn't do any excursions there but certainly those
14:01
you know Crystal had some really good options i'm trying to remember the ones that I looked up but Crystal had some really good ones uh uh which I assume
14:08
they will do the same when they go there but certainly some of the mosques I can't remember the full name Mutan something mosque which was the biggest
14:15
mosque in the world now that's going to be a great question Tom by the way next week so if you join next week um when
14:22
we've got Karen Warl on whose expertise in ports now she's actually uh she was on me with me on that uh particularly
14:29
route we went to Tangier and she had loads of recommendations I did go to her port talks it's embarrassing that I
14:35
can't remember everything that she But this is a good example of a great question to ask uh next week when
14:40
Karen's on because she will be able to give you incredible tips and also how to self-explore and not self-explore so please Tom come back next week and ask
14:47
that and you'll get a phenomenal answer answer that uh Tom is back from good to
14:52
see you on YouTube i just keep remind um just remind people uh that I do live
14:58
stream this on Facebook and on LinkedIn but pretty much most people join here on YouTube so back from a month in
15:04
Australia Sydney Hamilton Tasmania Melbourne fantastic all great great places travel agent Sarah here which is
15:10
great to see which here thank you thank you my old brain is which is absolutely
15:16
beautiful the train ride down to is phenomenal um really now I'm actually selling out of Seward later this year in
15:23
in in uh August but I'm doing a repositioning thing so come back to the question I was asked earlier i'm not
15:28
doing a for Alaska i'm literally going to Kodiak and then we're doing selling around to to um to Tokyo
15:38
eventually greg traveling on Queen Elizabeth to in June Alaska so I'm really excited because of course Queen
15:44
Elizabeth has just had quite a big refit a friend of mine is on at the moment so they've started posting some pictures i
15:50
really want to see the changes they've made um during the day how formal the dress code on C days you can wear shorts
15:55
you can wear flip flops uh it's not warm at all uh obviously probably not
16:01
depending on the June might be that depending so it's a little bit chilly in Alaska but you can wear shorts and a t-shirt if you want you can wear shorts
16:08
and flip-flop and t-shirts to breakfast to lunch obviously during dinner you can't but it's very very informal so um
16:14
not formal at all uh at all uh oh Michael that's good to know wears my
16:21
t-shirts on Grizz all the time that's fantastic thanks very much actually one of the things I have on my to-do list is
16:26
I haven't updated my motion for a while i do want to do kind of bit of a re a revamp um so that's good to know that
16:32
people like the existing ones as well sarah saying Alaskan Nazamar is brilliant that's good to
16:39
know um I can carry you we know you love the white pass on skateway absolutely
16:44
adore that do you always look for train tours in your cruise ports yes always i
16:50
will always look if there's a train option uh in terms of other must dos there are quite a few must dos which are
16:57
more Sorry I'm going to have a slug of water i do have more which are less so
17:06
in in ports as such and are more long so there's quite a few uh there's a couple
17:12
in Asia for example uh like one in Bangkok uh there and there's one there's
17:19
uh one in India there is also I would like to do the Orange Express even though I every time I look at it I think
17:25
it's just kind of too crazy and I would like to go to back to South Africa and redo the Robus rail or the blue term
17:30
which I think is back in service but in ports there's very few um that certainly
17:36
that I've looked that that I have on my list um but I do you're absolutely right if
17:44
if there's a train tour I will do it so even for example when we did the celebrity my celebrity group cruise they
17:51
even had a little tram train thing and I really had that on my list I come back to original question you had about I
17:56
didn't have time to do because I had some stuff to do with people on the ship to arrange some of the upcoming events
18:02
so I didn't do it but I would have jumped on that which is like a 45 minute little train ride
18:08
absolutely mike booked on a westbound transatlantic on Queen Mary 2 in May so
18:14
westbound means you're going from Southampton to New York in Queens Grillil have the choice of port side midft or starboard mid forward are these
18:21
equal is a preferred choice so Mike in reality my perspective is it doesn't really matter uh because the the reason
18:29
that most people worry about it is uh when you're sailing into New York uh
18:34
when you're sailing in you you if you were sailing into Manhattan the advantage of being on the port side is
18:40
you used to sail up past the Statue of Liberty so it saved you having you could just get out on your balcony and look at
18:46
it now in reality now because Quimo 2 docks in Brooklyn it sort of heads up and then takes a takes a right so you
18:53
don't actually sailed right past i mean it's still there but it's kind of much more in the distance like when I
18:58
originally saved sailed in uh on Queen Q2 actually uh uh you know we sailed
19:04
right past it and it was fantastic because men didn't have to get out on up on deck uh but it's still going to be
19:10
like at 5:00 in the morning now the sort of folklore goes going way back is the
19:16
word posh you may have heard about that the word posh stands for port out
19:21
starboard home and the idea being particularly before air conditioning stuff you had the sort of the best weather so port out would have mean that
19:27
you should be on the left hand side of the port side but in reality these days it doesn't really make a big difference
19:32
and because uh you know if you were going to on one side I would on getting the port side because maybe at 5:00 in
19:39
the morning you don't want to get out of bed and go stairs and you could sort of see that Statue of Liberty uh sort of in
19:45
the distance that would be that would be my tip sarah Bolton saying brick lane for authentic Indian food yet that's a
19:51
good point um people asking me Dave I get asked this a lot uh have I been on
19:57
Ambassador i have not been on Ambassador i do keep looking at Ambassador i do get asked you know a lot um because
20:05
obviously it's incredibly good value i just because I plan so far out okay I've
20:10
got all my cruises sort of I got a little bit of gap towards the end of 26 at the moment sort of just holding some
20:16
dates and a gap in 26 at the moment but that's July August sort of September
20:21
time um so and I was looking at some shorter ambassador cruises uh because I
20:27
would like to do because I get asked around it a lot and I'm very intrigued because they do seem to really split people into two camps like there's some
20:34
people who absolutely love it some people who go "No they're awful." And most with most people being on the light
20:39
side but you know they they um so I would like to try i just haven't found the right uh thing that I can slot into
20:46
my my my my diary uh almost retired abroad like love
20:53
that name which cruise lines would you recommend for Mexican Riviera i went to roundtrip or repositioning so obviously
20:59
you're you're generally more limited overall uh just because of ships that
21:05
are sort of based on the west coast although the good news is more and more are growing so if you're doing kind of porttoport so you've got like Honda
21:12
America which tends to be based out of San Diego then you've got Princess uh I
21:17
think you've got some Celebrity based now and I think even some Royal Caribbean sort of more based out of Long
21:23
Beach and so on so those you're relatively limited now you've got coming up next year you've also got Virgin
21:28
Voyages so if you're looking for an 18 plus so one of the things I was talking about where I've got gaps is um
21:33
Brilliant Lady when it's heading back from Alaska is going to be based out of Long Beach doing some Mexican Riviera
21:40
sailings which are sort of end of September October into October next year which I'm quite keen to try because I
21:46
may be west coast in that time of next year for a for a period of time so and
21:51
jumping on one of those is quite good now you're right you can do some sort of inverted commas repositioning but a lot
21:57
of ships will sail uh either on their way up to Alaska they'll go from Miami
22:03
or you know um Port Everglades or or you know Fort Lau or Port Canaveral and
22:09
they'll head through the through the um Panama Canal head up to sort of San
22:14
Francisco Long Beach on their way up so you there's a lot of lines that would do it but the ones that sort of going to
22:19
give you the most choice is take a look at the Hall America ships princess ships celebrity ships those are the ones that are sort of based on the West Coast it's
22:26
going to give you the most options and more likely to include more ports so that they tend to go to the same what's
22:32
puriata kaba lucas matalan that matalan
22:38
uh I'm trying to pronounce that correct because there's a there's a close called matalan and I always get pronounc it too
22:44
incorrectly here which is great on this massive big sort of world grand voyage um and she's in Bruge at the moment
22:52
steo what is in your opinion is the best river cruise in Asia and why now I I
22:59
have to admit I have only done one river cruise in Asia but I do think it is phenomenal which is the Meong the Meong
23:06
is an incredible incredible experience now I did it just as we were heading into CO actually sort of January into
23:11
February 2020 and I did it on across Europe uh on Indochin which is small
23:17
ship i think it was maximum 60 passengers 40 on there was only three English speakers including me on that
23:23
but um the the experience of the Mikong is fascinating because you obviously go
23:29
through Vietnam you go through Cambodia you get to see um Ho Chi Min City you get to see uh at the end you can do an
23:37
often they will include going to Ankor Ankor Watt uh which is just phenomenal
23:42
um non pen it's just it's amazing you get a great mixture of uh you know um
23:48
you know very rural small communities it's just magnificent um so that is the
23:54
best i would like to do the Yangzey River in China for example is is one that I would like to do but I would almost like to go back and do the Mikong
24:01
again and there's quite a few cruise lines so cross Europe I did it amma do it i think Biking do it um so that that
24:08
for me is the must do one if there's kind of a a must you know a must do one
24:14
um Dave asked me um have I been on Iona uh to Norwegian Fjords no I have not
24:20
been on Iona pino uh is is not high on my my my list iona obviously a big ship
24:27
uh very good for families looks like you've got kids there so I think if you're taking your kids there will have a great time uh you know because you if
24:34
you're going at school holidays um uh you know they have loads of kids good
24:40
fairs uh lots of stuff going on a kids program i haven't done that but the ports that they go to are you know the
24:47
ones fairly standard kind of ports so loads of things to do uh beautiful ports stuff obviously they need to go to ship
24:54
ports where bigger ships can get in like Zanga and so on so if you want more tips
25:00
on what to do in all the ports as I mentioned next week let's ask Karen uh
25:05
that when she's on because she is a real expert on ports i mean I can give you some thoughts but she is just way way
25:11
way better at at ports sorry I'm getting really
25:24
Detect your video about special packages to maximize value is getting a land tour add- on comp so that I think think you
25:30
might also be referring to my um I can't comment if it's this week's video uh or
25:35
the one a couple of weeks ago but basically just let let me explain what um what Dabetic is asking about is so
25:43
one of the things that I talk about I think it's this week's video is around I often I because I I mentioned earlier I
25:49
do plan very far ahead uh and one of the things I try to do often is book when
25:55
itineraries come on sale or or because often they bundle things in and one of
26:01
the things I did for example when I booked the West African trip I was talking about is by booking very early
26:06
uh Regent were adding on a three night post cruise stay in Cape Town you can actually choose from a couple of them i
26:11
chose the one which is focused on wildlife now it's not that common to get land tour add-ons regent do do that
26:18
quite a lot i've seen that many of their uh early packages will include some sort
26:23
of pre-stay or postay uh but I haven't seen it on many other lines i'm sure there are others that do it maybe Sarah
26:29
has can throw um you know more light on that but it's seems less common most
26:35
cruise lines will tend to either give you obviously discounts or they will give you a trouble credit or you know
26:41
upgrade you know you you which is one of my favorite ways to book is you'll book a balcony and get a bigger balcony or
26:47
book a balcony and get a suite or go ocean view get a balcony those are the more the more normal ones because but
26:52
for me that that land tour is huge perceived and real added value so I'm
26:57
going to get to go to a couple of um uh safari parks and that's that sort of
27:03
stuff michael my wife and I on the Sun Princess the summer well I'm also on the Sun Princess Summer uh if you're on in
27:11
June the 14th uh which I think if I remember correctly
27:17
and in fact I don't if I remember I know for a fact it's going to Gibraltar because uh yeah goes Barcelona
27:24
Jibralta that's that's in on the on the 14th of June i I'm on that so maybe
27:30
we're on the same one um and you want to know uh the best thing to Gibralta who the monkeys are with it well actually I
27:36
I think one of the great tours now if you're on Sim Princess the one I'm on I left it a bit late to book one of the
27:42
tours uh which is just to go up the cable car i've been up the cable car for ages so I might just go and do that myself but one of the most fascinating
27:48
tours Michael is they'll often do one which includes a cable car ride up so great views from the top there but then
27:55
you go into the into the tunnels and the tunnels are fascinating because they are hollowed out uh partly naturally partly
28:03
they were dug and there's a huge history around how these tunnels were dug you know going way back uh to protect the
28:09
rock and even then during the Second World War they were dug even further and were used to basically have protective
28:14
battlements inside the rock uh it's absolutely fascinating and then you you
28:20
know you get up the top and you do get to see the barbar monkeys and and the views that for me is absolutely
28:25
fascinating there's another one which they'll do which you often go up again often up the cable car not always up the
28:30
cable car and then you go into the caves which I think called the Michael's caves if I'm correctly you know that's that
28:36
stall Mike stallic tights kind of thing so that's also quite fun to do you can sometimes do a whole combined one which
28:42
I don't think some princess uh was offering as an option where maybe because the amount of time which I've
28:47
done before where I've gone up and then gone into the uh the caves and gone in
28:52
into the tunnels uh that would be the ones I'd recommend there are some other tours uh where you can actually go more
28:59
landbased and look at some lighouses stuff i would you know the tunnel one is fascinating because it's really about
29:06
the history and and the insight uh big time so I would I would really encourage
29:11
you to do that miguel yes I have been on Queen
29:16
Anne um I've got a video of that in fact I've got two videos if I remember correctly about that so if you go to the
29:21
channel um on the channel just search Queen Anne uh it's a completely different ship to the others uh it's
29:28
obviously you know they they were obviously allocated I guess a pinnacle class ship which is a Honda America
29:35
class of ship it's actually stretched longer so it's like a a stretched pinnacle which in my view doesn't work as well as pinnacle class ships it has a
29:42
sort of funny area in the middle but they needed I guess that to create the Queen's room um and for me it didn't
29:48
work as well uh but maybe I'm just because I'm a diehold old thing but you know what's interesting about Kunard is
29:54
you've got Queen Mary 2 which is one experience ship then you've got Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria which are
30:01
uh a Vista class ship so again similar to you've got in in Holland America and political class and they all are kind of
30:08
layout wise very different queen is quite a big ship passenger wise it's in terms of passenger numbers it's their
30:13
biggest ship um and if you're very into you know the Grand Queen's Room doesn't
30:19
quite work as well uh as it does uh on the other ships for example and I
30:24
suspect over time they will do something that because it hasn't really clicked um but it's you know if you want to go say
30:29
Batanic Club they they really leaned into Batanic Club uh well uh the Queens
30:35
and Princess GR divide people a little bit more um personally it's not a ship I
30:40
would rush back to i would much rather look that's why I'm really intrigued as I was mentioning to see how they've revamped and improved Queen Elizabeth uh
30:48
you know I I would prefer Queen Mary too because it's quirkiness and Victoria and Elizabeth over Queen Anne so if I go
30:54
back on Qard Queen Air will be quite low on my on my list so my next Qard trip for example is Queen Mary too because I
31:00
want to do transatlantic again which we're doing in June next year but if I was doing another one I would do uh
31:06
probably Queen Elizabeth just because it's they've changed they've changed it so more tips on on chicken t but watch
31:13
watch that video where I dive into it much much more just reminder write the
31:19
word uh question uh Greg booked Queens Grill to Alaska in
31:27
June throughout the process I said drinks package included paid receipts said drinks not included okay Greg it
31:33
depends where you are based so if you're based in the US uh there was a a period
31:40
of time which I think is still true but need to check where people booking Queens Grill did have the drinks package
31:46
included and it really annoyed people including me even though I'm not a big drinker uh in the UK because uh drinks
31:52
packages not included in the fair so for a start it depends whether you're US or
31:57
UK so if you're in the UK and have seen some stuff online you know that was applicable to people booking in the US
32:03
if it's in the US and it said that just double check because it they were doing it I think for a period of time and it
32:10
may be that you booked when it had fallen out now if you've booked uh through a travel agent obviously ask
32:15
your travel agent if you booked direct with um them call them up uh and and
32:21
double check with them but it could be a little bit of that was a deal promotion they were doing uh which I think was
32:26
time specific but don't quote me on that and it could be that it's sort of fallen off by the time you booked it uh and or
32:32
it could be that confusion between UK and uh the UK it was really wound people
32:37
up uh big time uh and it was really on because the time we booked our Queen and
32:43
trip that was true and even when we were I think when we booked our transatlantic
32:49
it was still the case um because I I also because people were talking about it includes drinks and was like well
32:54
doesn't include drinks and people were commenting on my Queen Anne video and that's when I realized and also when I
33:00
was looking at my transatlantic I I used a VPN and looked at what the S was saying in the US versus the UK and
33:06
that's where it really I could see that key difference there chris asking the question probably uh Karen's real focus
33:13
is ocean that's her background she worked on ships um so I think you'll find it's mostly uh will be ocean but
33:22
certainly you can ask and I may be able to help on some of the river the river ones as well sher making the point about
33:28
the caves as well philipp asking silver sea service which is very good you've asked that repeatedly it's pretty good
33:35
uh it's very good I think um and certainly based on my experience beat out explorer but I think explorer is
33:42
improving but I I find service on silver sea all of them are good silver Sea Seaborn region etc all all very good
33:49
[Music] um Rangar asking the
33:54
question "Demographic of western countries shows a tendency towards people being alone uh do you think the
34:00
cruise lines will offer more solar cabins in the future?" Not really i think we've seen some cruise lines sort
34:06
of embrace it but um the big focus of cruise lines in my view and from what
34:11
you're seeing is very much on attracting more families because there's obviously they can make much more money if you've
34:16
got a cabin and you've now got four people in it obviously that's much more appealing partly from the fairs you're
34:22
getting but also the onboard expenditure is going to be higher so the focus you know most cruise lines are heavily going
34:27
not heavily but going after family even you've got you know Holland America which was very much used to be an more
34:32
sort of a an older age sort of boomers maybe late Gen X kind of uh couples
34:38
focus they often are now running kids promotions uh obviously Explore Journeys launching brand new as a luxury to
34:44
luxury line they're also uh encouraging families to travel uh you know Celebrity at the moment are running a lot of
34:50
family uh promotions uh I guess particularly with people people booking summer and further ahead so solos are I
34:58
I we've seen some lines doing some stuff with solos i don't think there's going to be a massive trend towards more solos
35:05
what uh we're seeing some lines doing but it tends to be more in the luxury space is doing a lot more work uh with
35:12
low solo supplements so for example you know Crystal doing explore journeys have some very good rates i don't think we'll
35:18
see a lot i mean Norwegian Cruise Line which already had the uh the solo
35:24
studios which are the inside cabins which personally to melaz
35:29
um but they have spoken about how they're going to lean a little bit more into the solos side uh but you know
35:37
Carnival Corporation Carnival Cruise Lines has made it very clear they have no plans at all to launch solar cabins
35:42
and they just announced some massive big new mega ships 8,000 passengers with no
35:47
word yet of that's going to include any solo cabins but they generally say they're not going to uh you know Princess a lot of even a lot of the
35:53
Carnival Corporation haven't embraced it as much so we're seeing bits and pieces but I'm not sure we're going to see a
35:58
massive general and it'd be great if I was proven wrong on that um but we're seeing you know it cruise lines are more
36:06
in more interest at the moment attracting uh a couple of things you're seeing is they're focusing a lot more uh
36:13
and I've seen lots of them with their recent presentations to Wall Street uh
36:18
some of the presentations I'm picking up through all the stuff I subscribe to in the trade press are talking more and
36:24
more about Gen X which are your 45 to 59 year olds as a focus and of course
36:30
families because a lot of those people also have families uh is really where they're sort of they're focusing uh
36:37
on uh Deborah sorry it's a question from Barbara I've skipped I'll come back to
36:43
yours Deborah uh I want to get a portable clothes line for a cruise line we don't have a line in the shower
36:48
uh Sawmouth suction cup that's very unusual because normally most cruise I think pretty much every cruise line I've
36:54
been on have those funny pull out ones from the wall which hook on i need to look more actually in recent cruises if
36:59
I've had this but normally they have that pull out one which goes in the wall um so I haven't tried a suction cap one
37:07
i've either always used the pulley out one um or you know hang up things like um trunks and stuff uh so uh uh I don't
37:17
know if anyone's got better experience mag Magnus one really works but um I
37:23
would give them a try because they're not that costly to buy the ones that I've seen but most most lines check most
37:29
most cruise lines I've had have got that um let's have a look barbara question one so I'm guessing
37:36
more than other questions coming barbara following up on your last video comment about additional revenue on cruises what
37:42
percentage of profit do you think derive from casino spends May the fourth i don't know it's a question i should look
37:47
at it much more but um based on the amount of space they give to him I'm
37:52
assuming it's huge the cruise lines whenever I've looked you know when they announce their results they never break
37:58
out the casino spend but I'm sure there's a way I can probably delve in and find that so um the I mean it's also
38:05
very telling you'll find cruise lines that don't have casinos like Viking will often be much higher fairs you know Disney much higher fairs uh than those
38:12
that have it i mean it's interesting because Honda America for example have just uh sort of revamping some of their
38:18
ships uh like the USM for example and they used to have attached the casino
38:23
quite big lounge which is a very funky sort of art thing they've ripped all that out and expanded more casino space
38:30
in there so I think that probably answers the question i will try and find out uh Barbara um but if you just look
38:36
also at the the the amount the extent the cruise lines will go to to attract
38:42
casino players so as you probably know you can if you play on many cruise lines
38:48
get offered uh complimentary cruises where you pay the tax starting based on how much you spend from inside but those
38:54
are very you know they're very aggressive even though lines are selling quite full they're very active at
38:59
recruiting gamblers so I assume it's quite high um but I'll see if I can find out more on that
39:06
one jay how do I match my status between Celebrity and Royal Caribbean that's actually very simple Jay basically if
39:13
you've got a status on Celebrity and you got a status on Royal Caribbean it sort of just happens with the captain's club
39:20
so I I never actively did anything uh to match it but like when I went to Royal
39:25
Caribbean I it just reflected the fact that between those two programs I had a
39:30
certain status however with Silverc which they've added more recently into States Match you physically on the
39:36
Silver Sea site I just had you had to apply for them to match the program um
39:43
but uh with my celebrity in Royal Caribbean I didn't have to but the simplest thing to do Jay is use trusty
39:49
old Google and literally put uh status match celebrity in Royal Caribbean and if there's is a link you have to do it
39:55
these days but I don't think it's changed that that will come up but certainly I never had to do it thank you
40:01
Mera mazataland mataland is the uh the the sort of the the value clothes
40:07
store now George asked the question uh we live in Chicago treated by summer
40:12
Great Lakes i really want to do a Great Lakes cruise i still haven't got in my schedule um so Viking I really like the
40:19
look of Viking but they are so expensive there is a variet now I think it's called Variety uh do much better value
40:27
ones and you're right Ponant so I would take a look at Viking ponant do them as well and relative program and and
40:33
variety they are much more affordable those are the three I'd actually really looked to focus Viking and and variety
40:40
um as as as the key as a key ones chris again saying amort is a fantastic one
40:46
sarah Green with me it's the Meong the Ganges yeah it's interesting Sarah brings up the Ganges there was a very
40:51
there's a there's a show which she doesn't do anymore because it's done by a different presenter now but Jay
40:56
McDonald who was a singer on cruise ships became quite a big known through like the reality show she used to do a cruising with Jay McDonald and she did a
41:03
Ganges river cruise and even Mark who never really appealed with river cruising we watched that and he that's
41:10
the one that he sort of had on his uh on his sort of uh watch list that does look very interesting oh here we go barbara's
41:17
second question a travel agent found a regions Tokyo to Vancouver at a super deal for 4205 which you can't do almost
41:23
40% of regular fair any sight on why decision to sl yeah so the reason being
41:29
is is repositioning cruises are um always at a discount but Tokyo to
41:35
Vancouver many people are not keen on it because they're the seas it can be pretty choppy and rough now me I love
41:43
that so we have 60 days so so for example the one I'm doing I'm doing that but the other way i'm doing from Vancouver to Tokyo um and um uh there's
41:53
in the middle of it there's six C days solid C days so a lot of that doesn't appeal to a lot of people so it will
41:59
literally be that they're not filling it up i mean it's crude as that first of all um I I mean the Silver Sea one that
42:06
I booked already was half the price of what it would normally be if I did a any other thing on Silven Nova um I'm paying
42:13
half the day rate uh that I'm paying if I was doing any other cruise whether it's last cruises or Tokyo cruises or
42:20
wherever else they were because I looked at that so it's half the price already um and um I'm keeping an eye on the sort
42:27
of pricing of that but literally when you look if you follow people who on that a lot of people say "Oh my god it's so rough um I I wish I hadn't done
42:34
this." Unless you really love the rough sea but you got that sort of slug in the middle 60 days where it could be quite choppy so it's for a lot of people it
42:40
doesn't appeal you you literally like you might have one stop now this appeals to me there's only one stop which I've
42:45
never been to before Kodiak uh in Alaska um so that's fine that end but there's a
42:50
whole lot of ports that I haven't been to which are on the west coast of Tokyo
42:57
uh west coast of Japan but they're not the iconic ports we do actually go to uh Hiroshima uh but the other ports are
43:04
much more obscure ports that won't be on people's head so it's probably a combination of itinerary and and time uh
43:11
that's that's what that's what I would say um Grant preferring the starboard side
43:18
um when when when leaving of course going west anyway uh
43:25
SL would you ever consider a Mela cruise wondering if there will be close to Ambassadan facilities and costwise so I
43:31
it's not to be honest it's not high on my list uh it's very well covered you know people like Paul and Carol uh Jamie
43:39
uh uh I think Cruise Monkeys lots of lots of certainly UK based um travelers
43:45
are very keen on Mela mela is incredibly good value as a cruise it's more
43:52
all-incclusive than Ambassador and has a very good reputation for entertainment so they often in the UK with the various
43:58
sort of trade press awards will often win kind of entertainment uh which is quite impressive when you consider they
44:04
they often will beat out lines like Royal Caribbean for example on that side now they do have much older ships uh old
44:11
Royal Caribbean ships because of course TUI you know TUI Mela is 50% owned by
44:17
Royal Caribbean so it's a joint venture between the TUI corporation and Royal Caribbean so it's the cruising operation
44:22
is kind of run by Royal Caribbean so it's a kind of a 50-50 joint venture so they've used some of the older ones the
44:27
good news is they've announced that they're going to do some new builds specifically allocated for Mela but they're not coming on stream I think
44:33
until 2027 28 but don't quote me 100% on that but it's it's sort of in the future
44:39
so it it's not high on my list to do um but I'm sort of intrigued by them
44:44
because people who certainly all those bloggers and vloggers that have been out they really really like Mela um and they
44:51
do they do they are very good they are very good value and people are very keen on them i don't have anything planned
44:57
but you're right they're kind of interesting i think you know they are their ships even though they're older ships the ships are still more
45:03
contemporary versus say the ambassador ships um uh and so from an entertainment
45:10
perspective and all inclusive perspective they are they are they are they are bigger
45:17
um let's have a a look um let's have a
45:25
look jennifer have you done any of the glacia viewing excursions off the ship during
45:31
Sydney cruising Alaska so I've done the Hubbed Glacia which was phenomenal now I
45:36
did it when I was on Majestic Princess and what this comes back to one of the tips I always say with Alaska is keep an
45:42
eye on you know book your excursions the minute they come on even if you're not 100% sure because most of them have
45:48
pretty good cancellation and with Hubba Glacia they had this opportunity where they had a small boat i think it was
45:53
only 120 people something like that um which they the ship came the boat came
45:58
and met you when you sailed into the Hobbit glacia area and 120 window we went as close as you're allowed to get
46:05
to whereas the ship was miles away so we were quite close up when there was um you know carving of the of the of the
46:12
you know the glacier because the hover glacia carves a lot because it's very fast moving um so that's the main one
46:17
I've done now actually coming back to the original question I've got uh some booked uh in that upcoming trip but the
46:24
Hubbaglacia was the the most impressive one of all uh so that's the one if
46:29
that's on your attorney I would absolutely absolutely do
46:34
that uh Lucy is asking about it's not coming up um our first
46:41
MSE cruise is is about to start in two weeks anything need to know in advance so Lucy's um take a look at my MSE
46:48
videos um so again if you go to the channel just little search button there search MSE I'll dive into this much more
46:53
detail because I'll probably forget stuff you know MSE I would try and if you if you've got anything you know you
46:59
want to do like speciality dining and stuff I would try and lock that down they do have some quite good deals
47:05
booking especially dining in advance generally speaking depending on the ship you're on is um they things can get
47:12
really busy really packed so things like bars and stuff get really busy finding seats is kind of difficult but if so I
47:18
would if there's anything you really want to do especially booking tie that up and if there's any So I would look at
47:24
their website and look at things you can pre book packages you can pre-book so they do have I don't know what you've
47:29
booked but they do have those various packages like Ora and whatever which includes certain perks with you know
47:35
booking your specially d your regular dining slots and and that sort of stuff so I'd also look at I've gone online and
47:41
make sure that you've got all the right kind of combination of of uh of of packages
47:48
um Christine oh Christine growing brilliant lady excellent excellent um
47:53
and Walter making the point about very hit and miss with their Yeah I was going to say I was going to say uh I was going
48:00
to be polite but also making the point that MSC customer service is terrible i think he was very polite um uh can have
48:07
good like it's very hit and miss like the guest relations are just terribly
48:13
rude in normally so you just need to manage those kind of expectations david asking a question do
48:19
you publicize your upcoming cruises yes so I put them all on on my website on my
48:24
blog at tipsfort travelers.com i have a a a tab there which I think is called
48:30
upcoming cruises and I put all my cruises uh on on there so I you know I
48:36
don't so I I don't I don't do those i don't I don't have them as a surprise i know some people like Emma for example
48:43
will only announce them when she's on the cruise uh for example um uh but no I
48:49
I I just I I kind of post those maybe maybe I shouldn't i don't know but I I do currently uh
48:56
Manuel will you be terminar again anytime soon i mean I think you have Yes
49:01
I have been back on board since they changed ownership um and I get I had
49:07
very mixed experience i think they were fine i don't have any plans to go back um I have I've been asked about ASMR a
49:12
lot and I I'm quite intrigued to see whether they've got things in their stride but I have been since they
49:18
changed ownership but even since then I you know I spoke to people in fact on the last cruise they feel that had been
49:23
on roughly about the same time I had who'd felt that much more um improved uh
49:28
so but I don't have any I don't have any plans uh I don't have any plans uh to go
49:35
back at this at this point in time um so adding a bit more insight onto why those
49:43
why people may be dropping making the point um good point m we don't know what
49:49
celebrity will be doing with the river cruising that's good point where's Walter mentioning that as well uh let's
49:55
have a look dennis have you noticed any impact from US travel cutting and cruise
50:00
festival or promotions no is the short answer um uh all the you know this last
50:07
week last 10 days both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian issued their results uh
50:14
they said Norwegian said they had they had some softness in Europe uh cruisers in
50:21
Europe uh which they actually said they they actually felt it was more around
50:27
the uncertainty of the new European travel system coming in as you may know
50:32
Europe is introducing a similar system to if you coming into the US with the ESTA like the UK's now introduced the
50:40
electronic travel but they're also due to launch the is it called the ETS which
50:45
is the fingerprinting and photographing process it's been very very delayed but they are talking about now phasing it in
50:51
from the summer um and they actually there's a lot of concern and reservations particularly from US
50:57
travelers coming into Europe uh other rather than the other way um but the but they have they spoke about they have
51:03
seen no reduction in um demand and
51:09
whatever but the point I think also being uh reading between the lines is that most people and comes back to the
51:15
question is said there most people will have booked cruises a year ago nine months ago and may have paid final
51:21
balances or have got their vacations planned so you know for example I know
51:28
uh some people who follow the channel some patrons of mine who are Canadians who are wanting to you know boycott the
51:35
US or whatever but they also say "Look but I have two cruises lined up and I've paid the final balance and I'm going on
51:40
them." So so I think it it may be further out but certainly the cruise lines have said "No." I think the other
51:46
thing that's really interesting is um the cruise lines are putting a lot of focus back particularly on the Caribbean
51:53
so it's interesting so for example again with the Norwegian they have spoken about how they are moving more ships uh
52:00
moving more ships into the Caribbean because that's extremely profitable for them uh and also the supply chains of
52:06
course are much shorter because as you probably know they ship huge containers of food all around the world uh is is
52:11
the way the logistics work and and they found it's much more profitable to have ships in the Caribbean and the big boon
52:17
coming back to question people asking is short cruises so a lot of like Royal Caribbean Norwegian are moving to
52:22
shorter cruises three and four day cruises in the Caribbean as they're attracting more and more new to cruise more and more families so uh and of
52:30
course that's largely US travelers so it's a long way of answering your question the short answer is no uh the
52:36
long answer is more complicated and of course we will see over time i think it's going to be more interesting as we look into next year and beyond you know
52:42
if people are planning travel you know they may be planning their 26th summer or whatever now whether people are
52:48
making uh more choices but at the moment no and I will keep an eye on what uh
52:53
we're seeing the cruise lines say because every every 3 months they they
52:58
they'll they have a results and they do briefings to um Wall Street where
53:05
they're all listed and uh it's very telling i mean the other thing they said is by the way uh on average they're
53:12
selling 109% on average so they're selling at 9% over capacity uh cruise
53:18
fairs are up onboard spend is up so that you know we're not seeing any any so far
53:24
so um we will see we will see KY um what
53:29
are your recommendations on Galapagus cruises in versus outer loop did you spend any time of Baltra or Santa Cruz
53:35
before the cruise to be honest with you when I went to Galapas I never never really understood the inner and outer i
53:40
just booked a Galapicus cruise so I don't I went blissfully unaware that there was two i realized once I was on
53:45
that they were they were doing they did an inner loop and an outer loop um back toback so people could do do both so I I
53:52
do not now other people here might have a better view of that probably I guess point number one is you're aware the two
53:58
differences um uh so I don't have a recommendation i I I didn't spend time
54:04
before the cruise no um I I didn't spend time before we had like one night or
54:09
something like that in between flying in and whatever so no not not really um as part of the the package of the hotel and
54:15
stuff there so I was completely rubbish at Galacticus in terms of in-n-out
54:22
um let's have a look um lots of chat let's make sure I'm not
54:30
missing any any of the chat so let's just make sure if I've missed any questions so let's go because I know
54:36
there was sometimes I miss if people haven't written questions so let's just see if I have missed
54:43
anything [Music] uh Ky asking the question in Sweden and Finland um again my big tip is if
54:51
possible join us next week uh when I've got Karen uh here who's an expert in
54:57
ports and port talks and she'll be able to answer what you will need to know is the specific ports but she will have
55:03
loads and loads of recommendations so that would be a great one uh for for next for next week um let's have a look
55:11
if I missed any other if I missed any other
55:16
questions um sorry i'm just looking because I know sometimes I miss when when there's chats
55:26
um oh good you've already looked at all the tips
55:32
uh George we're kind of bummed that our upcoming region explorer backto back uh
55:39
I guess that's the last cruise won't visit hover glazer giving you glowing reviews which are the next best glaces to get up to close and personal
55:47
um I'm trying to think of the other ones
55:53
that we did near Vald i'm trying to remember the name of the It's slipped my mind when I was on the Viking we'd went
56:00
and I can't remember the name of the Glacia it's up that sort of Valdis way um and uh obviously in Glacia Bay but
56:07
you don't actually get out they don't have smaller excursions off the big ships but Glacia Bay are just phenomenal
56:12
the John Hopkins uh glacian stuff but everyone has better better parts um
56:18
please add those uh Chris what is your favorite port of departure in terms of tagging on extra day for visits well my
56:25
favorite are um Tokyo and Hong Kong so those kind of long distance ones Sydney
56:32
those kind of things so particularly things that are kind of far away so for example when I did uh you know when I
56:38
did my Japan cruise I spent three days in Tokyo before I I joined the Tok this year Tokyo I spent four days in Tokyo um
56:46
we're going like Sydney although I've been I've been fortunate enough to go to Sydney quite a few times we have friends
56:51
in Sydney Sydney another place like we're going to Sydney uh to go to Sydney to Papietti so I'd spend more time in
56:57
Sydney particular if I'm going to longhaul those would be the ones uh like Hong Kong I spend four days in after
57:03
that trip so particular more kind exotic out of the way places would be really where I would focus places that I may
57:10
never get back to or countries I would never get back to that's almost my tip if I if it's say like Florida or Miami
57:15
or whatever um I would say the chance of me going back there is very high because uh you know I'm probably always going to
57:20
try and do another Caribbean cruise or something like that uh so that it would tend to be if I'm going somewhere more
57:26
exotic so for example next year I've got a month-long sort of circumnavig quite a
57:33
circumnavigation three/arter navigation from Buanazaris all the way around eventually goes through Panama Canal
57:39
back to Fort Lauderdale but I would wanaris is where I would want to spend
57:45
time both to explore but I know there's some also places you can go to the falls and and stuff like that because it's
57:51
just a little bit further a field so that would be really why I focus is it's long horses it's very costly to get
57:56
there who knows if you'll ever get back there um would be the kind of criteria
58:02
and obviously if there's lots of exciting things to see but particularly if it's very exciting and different and also to be honest if I think there's
58:08
going to be you know if there's a big time zone change then um then then
58:15
that's even more of a plus because it means by the time you get on the cruise you're sort of in that kind of stride of
58:21
uh stride of things fantastic i think in fact I think I have managed to actually
58:29
unusually answer all the questions which is great so I just want to bring before we wrap i just want to remind you again
