Springfield, United States - September 24, 2026 A Sangamon County sheriff’s lieutenant was captured on his dashcam hitting a man as he crossed a street in downtown Springfield. Lt. Andrew Henton was off-duty when he drove a county-issued squad car through the city on September 24, according to Sangamon County officials. The footage shows Henton turning from 9th Street onto Monroe Street near the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office before striking the pedestrian as he crossed the street. Henton stopped the vehicle and got out to check on the man before calling emergency services. Springfield police responded, and the pedestrian was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Police described the man’s injuries as non-life-threatening. The extent of his injuries and his current condition are unknown. Following an investigation, Henton was issued a citation for failing to stop for someone in a crosswalk. He is scheduled to appear in court on October 15. The sheriff’s office said it reviewed the dashcam footage and found Henton was not using his phone or computer, with no other distractions inside the vehicle.
