Is it cheating if there's no physical contact? EMDR therapist Kelly O'Horo breaks down emotional affairs, micro-cheating, and digital/online infidelity, where the line really is, and why emotional betrayal can hurt just as much as physical.
I'm Kelly O'Horo, Attachment based EMDR Therapist, EMDRIA Consultant, and Advanced Trainer. I'm a mom of 5, Nonna of 5, wife, and a healer. I have the honor of spending my workdays walking along side people while they brave their healing journeys. I try to live with the generous assumption that we're all doing the best we can with what we know. Therapists are teachers for the "life stuff" and "emotional vocabulary" that may not have been learned due to gaps in our care givers capabilities. In the last 15 years I've learned that people are freaking amazing, resilient, and inspiring. Most importantly, we are hardwired for connection and for healing!
I hope to bring an authentic, compassionate, and unpolished approach while we explore a variety of topics such as parenting, marriage, relationships, dating, trauma, attachment, adoption, depression, addiction, anxiety, and love! There's a why for all behaviors and an explanation that makes perfect sense as emotion is at the root of it all.

Hi everyone. I'm Kelly O'Hora.
0:09
And this is Adaptable Behavior
0:11
Explained. Welcome back to Adaptable
0:13
Behavior Explained. I'm Kelly O'Hora and
0:16
your host and this is part three of our
0:18
series on infidelity after the affair.
0:21
So far we've looked at why people cheat
0:24
and the attachment wounds underneath it.
0:26
Today we're tackling the kind of affair
0:28
that's the hardest to define and the
0:30
easiest to fall into. The one where no
0:33
one ever takes their clothes off and a
0:35
marriage still gets broken. We're
0:37
talking about emotional affairs.
0:39
So what we often hear in the counseling
0:42
office is, "But nothing happened." It
0:44
might be the most common sentence I hear
0:47
when it comes to this topic. No kiss, no
0:49
hotel room, no physical line ever was
0:52
crossed and yet the betrayed partner is
0:54
shattered and the unfaithful one is
0:56
genuinely bewildered that something they
0:59
swear was innocent caused this much
1:01
pain.
1:02
Here's the truth. An affair doesn't
1:04
require a single touch. Sometimes the
1:07
deepest betrayal is built entirely out
1:10
of words.
1:11
In this episode you're going to learn
1:13
the real definition of an emotional
1:15
affair and where the line actually is.
1:18
What a micro-cheating definition is and
1:20
how an innocent friendship can slide
1:22
past it.
1:24
The story of a good man who never
1:25
touched anyone and broke his wife's
1:27
trust anyway.
1:29
Why emotional betrayal can hurt as much
1:31
or more than physical.
1:34
And why nothing physical happened
1:35
doesn't restore trust the way people
1:37
think that it will.
1:39
The question everyone asks is, "Is it
1:42
even cheating?"
1:43
And the first thing people want to know
1:45
is whether it counts. And I understand
1:48
why because without a physical act
1:50
there's no obvious line in the sand. So
1:53
let me give you the line I use. It's not
1:55
about bodies. It's about three things:
1:58
secrecy, emotional intimacy, and where
2:01
your energy goes. If you're sharing the
2:03
most alive parts of yourself
2:06
with someone outside your relationship,
2:08
you'd feel exposed having your partner
2:10
read the messages. And if that person
2:12
has quietly become the one you turn to
2:14
first, you're going to fair territory,
2:16
whether or not anyone has ever touched.
2:19
So, let's talk about what an emotional
2:21
affair actually is. An emotional affair
2:23
is the redirection of emotional
2:25
intimacy, your vulnerability, your
2:28
excitement, your comfort, away from your
2:30
partner and towards someone else,
2:32
usually wrapped in secrecy. It's not the
2:35
friendship itself that's the problem. We
2:37
all need friends, and it's even okay to
2:39
have friends of the opposite sex. It's
2:41
when the friendship becomes a hiding
2:43
place, and when it starts feeding
2:45
something the marriage is starving for,
2:47
and when you begin protecting it from
2:49
your partner.
2:50
That's the shift from connection to
2:52
betrayal.
2:53
So, let's talk a little bit about
2:55
micro-cheating, or kind of the slow
2:58
erosion.
2:59
Almost no one decides to have an
3:01
emotional affair. It happens by degrees,
3:03
what people now call micro-cheating. A
3:06
text that didn't need to be sent, an
3:08
inside joke, sharing a hard day with
3:10
them before you share it with your
3:11
spouse, deleting a message just so it's
3:14
not misunderstood. Each step is a small
3:17
enough way to explain away, and that's
3:21
exactly what makes it dangerous. It's a
3:23
slow erosion, and by the time you look
3:26
up, the center of your emotional life
3:28
has quietly moved out of your home and
3:30
into the home of someone else.
3:32
So, let me talk about a client. We'll
3:34
just call him Ryan. Ryan doesn't go
3:36
looking for anything. By every outside
3:38
measure, his life is full. He's got a
3:40
marriage and two kids, a demanding job,
3:43
but somewhere in the years of logistics
3:45
and exhaustion, he and his wife quietly
3:47
become roommates, running an operation.
3:50
They talked about the calendar, the
3:51
kids, the bills. They almost never
3:53
talked about him. And Ryan, without ever
3:56
once saying it out loud, felt profoundly
3:58
lonely, disconnected, and unseen in his
4:01
own life.
4:02
Then he met a woman named Jess at the
4:03
gym. It was genuinely innocent first.
4:06
Easy conversation between sets, a few
4:09
laughs, the kind of light connection
4:11
that feels like a breath of fresh air
4:12
when you've been quietly suffocating.
4:14
Nothing about it sets off alarms. They
4:16
were just two people who clicked.
4:18
Then the texting starts. Small at first,
4:21
a funny meme, a good luck on your
4:22
presentation. But over time, it became
4:25
the place Ryan brought his life. The win
4:28
at work he was proud of, the frustration
4:30
with his boss, the random thought he
4:32
wanted to share with someone. He started
4:34
bringing all of that to Jess instead of
4:36
to his wife.
4:37
She always wrote back. She was curious
4:39
about him. She made him feel interesting
4:41
and capable and seen and important. The
4:44
exact things he'd stopped feeling at
4:46
home from his wife.
4:48
And then came the innocent coffees. Just
4:50
two friends catching up, he told
4:52
himself.
4:53
Uh they never held hands, nothing
4:54
romantic was ever said out loud. And
4:56
every time a flicker of doubt rose up,
4:58
Ryan had his answer ready. We're just
5:01
friends. Nothing's happened. But notice,
5:03
he never told his wife about the
5:05
coffees.
5:06
He started being a little vague about
5:08
where he'd been. And the secrecy had
5:10
arrived long before he was willing to
5:12
admit what it meant.
5:14
And then his wife found a message. Not
5:16
anything explicit. And that was almost
5:19
the hardest part. It was the tone, the
5:21
warmth, the inside jokes she wasn't part
5:23
of.
5:24
A line that read, "I can talk to you in
5:26
a way I can't talk to anyone else."
5:28
She sat there holding the phone and
5:30
realized that the closeness, the
5:32
curiosity, the emotional aliveness she'd
5:34
been missing for years, he'd had it the
5:37
whole time. He'd just been giving it to
5:38
someone else.
5:40
Ryan swore that nothing physical had
5:42
ever happened. And the truth is, nothing
5:44
had. But his wife couldn't make herself
5:46
believe it. And in a moment you'll see
5:48
she had every reason not to. So, let's
5:50
talk about why it hurt as much as a
5:52
physical affair.
5:54
People assume the absence of sex should
5:56
make this easier to forgive. Often it's
5:59
the opposite, because what was given
6:00
away wasn't a body, it was intimacy. The
6:03
laughing, the confiding, the being
6:05
known. The betrayed partner doesn't just
6:08
think you were attracted to someone,
6:10
they think you chose to be close to
6:11
someone else while I sat across from you
6:14
getting your leftovers.
6:15
That's a wound
6:17
that is the very center of the marriage.
6:20
I am still the person you turn to. It's
6:23
not. But nothing happened. Why can't she
6:26
just trust that? And here's the part the
6:29
unfaithful partner usually doesn't
6:31
understand.
6:32
When Ryan said nothing physical
6:34
happened, he meant it as reassurance,
6:36
but to his wife that sentence simply
6:38
couldn't land, and not because she was
6:40
irrational. Once secrecy enters a
6:43
marriage, the betrayed partner loses the
6:45
one thing trust is built on. The belief
6:48
that what they're being told is the
6:49
whole truth. She had already been told
6:52
we're just friends while an entire
6:54
emotional world was hidden from her. So,
6:56
why would nothing physical happened be
6:58
the place the honesty suddenly begins?
7:01
Her nervous system had learned that the
7:03
story she was given and the reality
7:05
underneath it were two different things.
7:07
That's not paranoia, that's a brain
7:09
that's been betrayed trying to protect
7:11
her. And we'll go into that a lot more
7:13
deeply in our next episode to talk about
7:16
betrayal and the kind of trauma that
7:18
that is.
7:19
So, now we're going to talk about the
7:20
path back.
7:22
The way back isn't to argue about
7:24
whether it counted. It's for the
7:26
unfaithful partner to do three things.
7:29
End the outside intimacy completely and
7:31
transparently. Get honest about the
7:34
unmet need that made it feel so good,
7:36
and turn that redirected energy back
7:38
toward the marriage. And then together,
7:41
the couple has to face the real question
7:43
underneath all of it. How did Ryan get
7:45
so lonely inside his own marriage that
7:48
near stranger at the gym became home?
7:51
It's not an excuse, it's the doorway to
7:53
actually fixing it. Because an emotional
7:55
affair is almost always a sign pointing
7:58
straight at a need that went unspoken
8:00
for just far too long.
8:02
So, if you take anything from today, let
8:05
it be these things. If you have a
8:07
friendship you're hiding, even a little,
8:09
that secrecy is the signal. Get honest
8:11
about what need is quietly being unmet
8:15
by this other person.
8:16
If you're the betrayed partner, your
8:18
pain is valid even if nothing happened
8:20
physical. You're not overreacting,
8:22
you're grieving a real loss. And if
8:25
you're the one who's straight
8:26
emotionally, "We're just friends" is the
8:28
story we tell ourselves right before we
8:30
lose the plot. Honesty is the only road
8:33
back.
