US, Phoenix: Mesa Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting With Sound On Tape.

Phoenix, United States - September 01, 2026 08/31/2026 09:00 pm GMT-0700 MESA, Ariz. – According to Detective Laura Cervantes, officers with the Mesa Police Department responded to reports of a man threatening bystanders while armed with a gun in his waistband in the 1800 block of North Spring around 9:00 p.m. Monday. Officers had previous interactions with the male suspect. Officers surrounded the neighborhood and began issuing verbal commands for the man to surrender. As officers were conducting the search for the suspect, a traffic collision occurred involving a passing motorist and a marked Mesa Police Department Tahoe that was on Mesa Drive near the rear of the perimeter. Officers began tending to those involved in the collision when the suspect was seen appearing over a cinderblock wall, armed with a handgun. Officers discharged their service weapons, striking the suspect. No officers were injured in the shooting. Officers made contact with the suspect and secured him before taking him into custody. Firefighters with the Mesa Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the suspect deceased. Mesa Police Department is leading the investigation into the events prior to the officer-involved shooting, while the Gilbert Police Department is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team. The area is expected to remain closed for several hours, including Mesa Drive between Jacaranda Street and Ivy Street, as detectives investigate the incident. No information was immediately available regarding the condition of those involved in the collision.
