US, Phoenix: Mesa Officer-Involved Shooting Investigation With Sound On Tape Part 2.

Phoenix, United States - August 04, 2026 08/03/2026 07:18 pm GMT-0700 MESA, Ariz. – According to Detective Laura Cervantes, the Mesa Police Department received multiple 911 calls regarding a male subject causing a disturbance in the area of Emery Circle and Raleigh Avenue on Monday night around 7:00 p.m. 911 callers stated that the man was armed with a shovel and had allegedly attacked his ex-wife and children with it. Several witnesses also mentioned that he possibly had an axe and a gun. The man was observed following his ex-wife down the street while striking multiple vehicles in the neighborhood with the axe. Witnesses attempted to intervene before officers arrived. Upon arrival, an officer issued verbal commands to the man, who still held the axe. As officers made contact with the suspect, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Additional officers soon arrived and detained the male subject. Officers provided life-saving measures until the Mesa Fire Department arrived on the scene. Despite efforts from both the fire department and police, the male subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no injuries to family members, witnesses, or officers involved. Cervantes noted that there is no ongoing threat to the community, and the incident remains under active investigation. The Gilbert Police Department will investigate the officer-involved shooting as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, while the Mesa Police Department will handle the investigation of the initial incident leading to the shooting.
