Daytona Beach Shores, United States - June 01, 2026 A 35-year-old woman suspected of being under the influence of alcohol crashed a truck into a toll booth, killing a longtime attendant before continuing into the ocean. Authorities said Deanna Harrell drove her pickup truck into the booth at about 40 miles per hour on Monday, striking 62-year-old Tammie Jo Baker, who died at the scene. After the collision, the vehicle continued forward, moving across the sand and entering the ocean, according to footage and accounts from the scene. Officials reported that Harrell gave off a strong smell of alcohol, with an odor noticeable near the vehicle, and said she would undergo breath and blood testing. Baker had worked for years as a county employee at the beach toll and was just weeks away from her 63rd birthday. She was declared dead at the scene following the impact. Harrell was later taken into custody under mental health evaluation procedures. Before being detained, bystanders helped pull her from the damaged truck as she attempted to drive away again. Authorities said they were surprised by the incident and noted it was fortunate that no additional people were struck.
