Pasadena, United States - September 07, 2025 A police officer shot and injured a colleague in the shoulder inside a department parking garage during what the police chief described as “unsafe, out-of-policy horseplay.” The incident occurred on September 7, 2025, at around 6:18 p.m. inside the parking structure, where two uniformed officers were standing near the back of a police SUV with its rear open. A dashcam video later released shows a patrol cruiser entering the garage and approaching the scene. One officer standing behind the SUV is seen drawing his handgun and pointing it at the approaching vehicle before reholstering it moments later. Both officers appear to smile afterward. Seconds later, according to Police Chief Gene Harris, the officer inside the cruiser pointed his department-issued firearm toward the other officer, and the weapon discharged while still inside the vehicle. The bullet struck the officer in the garage after passing through the windshield of the cruiser. The video shows the moment of impact, with the officer grabbing his shoulder and reacting in pain as others rush to assist him. The injured officer suffered serious wounds but has since recovered, according to the chief. Harris said the shooting video was withheld for nearly 10 months due to an ongoing investigation, using a legal exception that allows delayed release of such footage in certain cases. The chief identified the officer who fired the shot as Roy Alatorre, who has since left the department. He also confirmed that the case has been submitted for review to the Los Angeles County District Attorney and state oversight authorities. Officials said the investigation involved extensive interviews and required additional time before the footage could be released. Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo called the conduct “unacceptable,” stating that appropriate disciplinary action had been taken and expressing support for the police chief’s handling of the case. Chief Harris described the incident as “regretful” and not in line with department standards.
