The transit took place via the Rafah Border Crossing, an entry point that Israel had kept closed for a long time before recently reopening it on a limited basis. The Palestinians, who had been undergoing medical treatment in Egypt, were transported alongside their companions by bus. The convoy was accompanied by ambulances as it traveled to Al-Nasser Hospital, located in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. Emotional scenes unfolded as the vehicles carrying the returning Palestinians crossed into Gaza, allowing families to reunite. Relatives embraced their loved ones to ease the longing caused by their long separation. Israel has imposed a crippling blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the territory’s 2.4 million people on the verge of starvation. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 883 people have been killed and 2,648 others injured in Israeli attacks since the ceasefire was announced. The Israeli army launched a brutal two-year offensive on Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 people, injuring over 172,000 and causing massive destruction across the besieged territory.
