Facilitated by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Palestinians arrived at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis after a long journey. Families waiting at the hospital rushed toward the buses as they entered the compound, eager to see their relatives. Emotional scenes followed as parents embraced their children and families reunited after years apart. Some Palestinians broke down in tears as they hugged relatives they had not seen for months or even years. Usama Abdurrauf said his son had been detained during an Israeli raid on a hospital in the West Bank where he was receiving treatment. Abdurrauf said he had been waiting since morning in Gaza’s summer heat before finally reuniting with his son. Palestinian mother Nesrin al-Fakawi said she had been separated from her children for nearly three years and found that their faces had changed during the long separation. About 9,500 Palestinian prisoners, including 92 women and 370 children, are currently held in Israeli prisons under harsh conditions, with dozens reported to have died as a result of starvation, torture and medical neglect, according to Palestinian and Israeli rights organizations. In 2002, Israel’s Knesset passed the “Unlawful Combatant Law,” which allows Palestinians to be held for indefinite periods without indictment or sufficient evidence being presented to a court, according to Al Mezan Center for Human Rights. The first phase of the ceasefire agreement took effect on Oct. 10, 2025, providing for a ceasefire, hostage-prisoner exchanges and expanded humanitarian aid deliveries. Hamas says Israel has continued attacks and imposed restrictions on aid entering Gaza despite the agreement. Since the start of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 174,000 injured, according to Palestinian health authorities, while widespread destruction has devastated most of the enclave.
