FAMILIES REUNITING GAZA, PALESTINE - MAY 1, 2026: A group of sick and wounded Palestinians and their companions returned to Gaza late on Friday through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, which operates under strict Israeli restrictions. The group arrived in the besieged enclave after receiving medical treatment in Egypt and was transported to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, where emotional scenes unfolded as families reunited after prolonged separation. Ongoing Israeli attacks and the collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system have forced the transfer of severely wounded and chronically ill patients outside the besieged enclave for urgent treatment. Officials in Gaza say around 22,000 wounded and chronically ill people require treatment abroad amid Israeli restrictions as the enclave’s health system continues to struggle after Israel’s two-year genocide. Since the Rafah crossing was partially reopened on Feb. 2, returning Gazans have reported Israeli mistreatment, including detention and harsh interrogation lasting hours before being allowed to continue. Israel launched a genocidal war in October 2023, with the US support, lasting two years and killing over 72,000 Palestinians and injuring over 172,000, most of whom are children and women, as well as destroying 90% of civilian infrastructure.
