VARIOUS OF RELATIVES AND FRIENDS REUNITINGKHAN YOUNIS, GAZA, PALESTINE - MAY 11, 2026: A group of Palestinian patients, wounded individuals, and their companions returned to Gaza from Egypt via the Rafah Border Crossing on Monday, May 11, which reopened on a limited basis after Israel had kept it closed for a long time. The Palestinians had been receiving treatment in Egypt and were transported by bus to Al-Nasser Hospital in the southern Gaza of Khan Younis in a transfer accompanied by ambulances. Emotional moments were shared as families reunited upon the arrival of the buses, with Palestinians embracing their loved ones to ease the longing caused by their long separation. Despite the ceasefire agreement in Gaza that has been in effect since Oct. 10, Israel has failed to adhere to the humanitarian protocol concerning the movement of patients and the wounded seeking treatment abroad, allowing only meager amounts of new humanitarian aid to enter the enclave. Israel has continued to violate the agreement, resulting in the deaths of 837 Palestinians and injuries to 2,381 others, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ceasefire followed two years of Israeli war that began on Oct. 8, 2023, killing more than 72,000 Palestinians, wounding over 172,000 others and devastating about 90% of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure.
