The Palestinians, who had received medical treatment in Egypt, were transported by buses and ambulances to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Emotional scenes were witnessed as families reunited with relatives after long periods of separation. The Rafah crossing, Gaza’s main gateway to the outside world, had faced repeated restrictions despite a ceasefire announced on Oct. 10, 2025. Israeli authorities had closed all crossings in the area on Feb. 28 until further notice before Rafah was reportedly reopened on March 19 for pedestrian movement only. Israel has imposed a crippling blockade on the Gaza Strip since 2007, leaving the territory’s 2.4 million people on the verge of starvation. The Israeli army launched a brutal two-year offensive on Gaza in October 2023, killing more than 72,000 people, injuring over 172,000 and causing massive destruction across the besieged territory.
