The source said a 3-year-old child and a young man lost their lives when Israeli forces shelled a civilian gathering west of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza. Two more people were injured in the attack. A 21-year-old Palestinian also died of his wounds from Israeli shelling that targeted Al-Amal neighborhood, west of Khan Younis in southern Gaza last week, the source added. According to the source, an elderly Palestinian woman was wounded by gunfire from Israeli vehicles near the Al-Maslakh area, southwest of Khan Younis. In northern Gaza, Israeli artillery fired several shells toward areas east of the Jabalia refugee camp and the Al-Tuffah neighborhood, east of Gaza City, local sources said. Israeli vehicles also opened heavy fire toward residential homes east of the Bureij refugee camp in central Strip, according to local sources and eyewitnesses. The attacks come despite an earlier call by US President Donald Trump for Israel to halt its strikes on the Gaza Strip. In an Aug. 17 interview with US broadcaster Fox News, Trump said that Israel “shouldn't be carrying out strikes in Gaza.” He also said Hamas had agreed to “give up its weapons” in line with a US-backed peace plan. Last October, a US-backed ceasefire agreement ostensibly went into effect in the Gaza Strip. Since then, however, repeated Israeli truce violations have killed at least 1,318 Palestinians across the enclave and have left more than 4,300 others injured. Hundreds of bodies of slain Palestinians, meanwhile, have been pulled from under the rubble of destroyed infrastructure. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began its genocidal war on the coastal strip in October 2023.
