RESIDENTS STANDING AROUND RUBBLE SUHMUR, LEBANON - JUNE 18: Residents displaced by Israeli attacks have begun returning to the town of Suhmur in eastern Lebanon following the announcement of a U.S.-Iran agreement that also includes Lebanon. Despite warnings from Lebanese authorities and the army not to rush back, many families started returning to the town after hopes grew that the fighting had come to an end. Returnees found widespread destruction, with damaged homes, businesses and infrastructure across the town, but many residents said they were determined to rebuild their lives. Suhmur Mayor Mohammad al-Hashin said around 70 percent of the town's residents had returned since June 15 despite the extensive damage caused by Israeli attacks. Officials said around 200 homes were destroyed, about 100 were badly damaged and roughly 1,200 more suffered varying degrees of damage during the attacks. The US and Iran on Wednesday remotely signed a memorandum of understanding, officials from both countries announced. The 14-point draft, made public by US officials on Wednesday, calls for an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, removal of the naval blockade on Iran within 30 days, and safe passage for commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. It also includes a reconstruction and economic development plan for Iran valued at a minimum of $300 billion, oil export waivers, the release of Iran’s frozen assets, and a reaffirmation by Tehran that it will not develop nuclear weapons, with the future of its enriched uranium stockpile to be negotiated.
