Good morning. Welcome to Insights with
0:04
Pastor John. I'm Pastor John Moore and
0:06
today we're going to be taking a look at
0:08
the sword of the spirit living by God's
0:10
word.
0:12
And we're our text is Ephesians 6:17. It
0:15
says, "And take the helmet of salvation
0:17
and the sword of the spirit, which is
0:18
the word of God." Have you ever seen a
0:21
carpenter carrying tools
0:24
but never using them? Imagine him
0:27
holding a hammer yet never striking a
0:29
nail. The tool may be in his possession,
0:33
but without action, it achieves nothing.
0:36
Many Christians treat their Bibles this
0:38
way. We own it. We carry it. We even
0:40
display it. But in moments of battle, we
0:42
leave it unused.
0:45
The Apostle Paul reminds us that the
0:47
word of God is not a decoration, but a
0:50
weapon. The sword of the spirit. A sword
0:53
is meant to be drawn, used and trusted.
0:57
Without it, we stand defenseless against
0:59
our adversary. You know, one of the big
1:02
things that we find that uh with
1:04
Christian living is that we we walk in a
1:08
state of of
1:12
perpetual
1:14
victory and defeat. And if you'll look
1:17
at things that are going on in your life
1:19
where you have great victories, it's
1:21
because by faith you stood on what God's
1:23
word says. And when you had defeats,
1:27
it's because you didn't by faith trust
1:30
what God's word said. So it's important
1:33
that we understand the power of the
1:36
sword of the spirit, which is the word
1:38
of God. The Apostle Paul
1:42
in uh
1:45
2 Timothy 2:15 said, "Study to show
1:47
yourself approved unto God, a workman,
1:49
needing not to be ashamed, rightly
1:51
dividing the word of truth." It's
1:53
important that we realize just how
1:55
powerful God's word is in our lives to
1:58
the victory that we need.
2:01
In Paul's letter to the Ephesians, he's
2:04
he's imprisoned in Rome. And the letter
2:07
is rich with doctrine and practical
2:09
exhortation urging believers to live out
2:11
their identity in Christ. And in chapter
2:14
6, Paul shifts to the imagery of
2:16
warfare.
2:20
The Christian struggle is not against
2:21
people, but against spiritual forces of
2:23
darkness. He instructs believers to put
2:26
on the whole armor of God. And you don't
2:29
put armor on unless you're going out to
2:31
battle.
2:33
And when he told him to put on the whole
2:35
armor of God, he went through and he
2:37
described each piece of it. The belt of
2:40
truth, the breastplate of righteousness,
2:42
uh the shoes of peace, or having your
2:44
feet shot with the preparation of the
2:46
gospel of peace, the shield of faith,
2:49
the helmet of salvation.
2:51
But one weapon stands out, the sword of
2:53
the spirit, which is the word of God.
2:56
And it's not defensive. the sword of the
2:59
all of the armor that you put on is
3:01
defensive armor. It's to protect you
3:03
from getting hurt. But the he gave us
3:07
also an offensive weapon which we are
3:10
supposed to use. And the word in the
3:13
Greek for sword is masher and it's it's
3:18
a description of what the term in Latin
3:21
is gladius which is where we get the
3:23
word gladiator from. It's a short sword.
3:26
It's a double-edged sword and it's a
3:28
pointed sword. And that sword is to be
3:32
used by us in close combat with the
3:36
enemy.
3:39
The people in Ephesus at the time, they
3:42
were surrounded by
3:44
uh all these pagan temples. And Paul is
3:47
urging the people to stand up for the
3:49
truth and to believe what is written
3:52
even though they're living in this
3:54
wilderness of all these pagan temples to
3:56
stand on God's word for what it says and
3:59
to realize that they have the victory
4:02
over everything if they'll use the word
4:05
of God
4:07
as it says to.
4:10
So our b our life as a Christian is a
4:13
battlefield. Every day we face the
4:15
enemy. We face things the enemy brings
4:17
against us, attacks from the enemy.
4:20
That's what the defensive armor is for.
4:22
But we're not supposed to just stand
4:24
there and take the attack. We're
4:26
supposed to go forward and use the sword
4:28
of the spirit to defeat him.
4:31
So we have to we have to realize that
4:35
our our weapons and it says the weapons
4:39
of our warfare are not carnal but mighty
4:41
through God to the pulling down of
4:42
strongholds. And our weapons are our
4:46
faith, our hope, our witness in Christ
4:49
and God's word. The devil tries to plant
4:53
fear and temptation and discouragement,
4:56
but he's not left us defenseless. God
4:59
has given us a weapon that it can
5:00
overcome anything. And that weapon is
5:04
the word of God. And so, we have to
5:06
learn how to sharpen it. We have to
5:09
learn how to use it. And we have to
5:12
learn how to swing it, how to lift it,
5:14
and how to study it, how to speak it,
5:17
and how to apply it to our lives. And
5:20
so, we're going to look at the sword of
5:24
the spirit as number one, the word is
5:27
the sword of truth. It's our weapon in
5:30
temptation. It's our strength uh in
5:35
battle, and it's our victory in Christ.
5:38
Because when we repeat what Christ said,
5:41
when we believe by faith what Christ
5:43
said,
5:44
then we are able to overcome all the
5:47
powers of the enemy. So the first thing
5:51
we need to look at is the word is the
5:53
sword of truth. The devil's called the
5:55
father of lies in John 8:44. His main
5:57
strategy is deception. If he can get you
6:00
to believe a lie, he can defeat you.
6:04
So we need the truth, and the truth is
6:06
God's word. Jesus said, "The truth shall
6:08
set you free." Free from what? Free from
6:11
that attack from the enemy. And you need
6:13
to focus in on what God's word says.
6:16
What it says about you, what it says
6:17
about every situation and what it says
6:20
to do. And then by faith, you have to
6:23
operate it by doing it.
6:26
And the word of God is sharper than any
6:28
two-edged sword. And it cuts through
6:30
falsehoods like a sharp blade. And uh
6:35
the world promotes a lot of voices. We
6:37
hear we're overwhelmed and attacked by
6:39
culture, media, personal opinions.
6:42
And none of that matters because God's
6:46
word is final. It's the final authority.
6:48
It says that we should trust what God's
6:53
word says over what we can actually see.
6:56
That's the that's the base of Hebrews
6:58
11:1. It says faith faith is the
7:00
substance of things hoped for and the
7:02
evidence of things not seen. So we have
7:05
to take God's word for what it says. And
7:08
uh Hebrews 4:12 it says, "For the word
7:11
of God is quick and powerful and sharper
7:13
than any two-edged sword."
7:15
So imagine facing fear because of
7:18
uncertain times. The enemy's whispering
7:21
lies to you, telling you, "You can't
7:23
make it. You can't overcome this. You're
7:25
doomed to this." All these different
7:28
things. And then God's word says that
7:30
he's our salvation. He's our light. Who
7:34
should I fear?
7:37
And with that, fear loses its power
7:40
because you're standing on by faith on
7:42
what God's word says.
7:45
So know the truth before the lies come.
7:47
Study the word every day. The more you
7:50
sharpen your sword, the quicker you can
7:52
cut down uh deceptions. And the truth
7:55
always overcomes deceptions.
7:59
It's also
8:03
it's our weapon in temptation because
8:05
things always come against us. We're
8:07
always tempted by things, especially
8:09
things that at one time we were slaves
8:12
to. And listen to what Jesus said. This
8:15
is Jesus is in the wilderness. The enemy
8:18
comes to tempt him. And listen to what
8:20
he says.
8:23
When Satan tempted Jesus in the
8:24
wilderness, this is Matthew 4:1-11.
8:27
Christ did not debate or negotiate.
8:30
He declared, "It is written."
8:33
Three times the enemy attacked and three
8:35
times the word of God silenced him.
8:38
So Jesus was hungry. The enemy came. He
8:41
says, "If you truly be the son of God,"
8:43
so he's sewing, he is sowing doubt,
8:47
commanding stones to be turned into
8:49
bread. And Jesus's reply to him
8:53
was man shall not live by bread alone
8:54
but by every word that proceedth out of
8:56
the mouth of God.
9:00
So we have these situations where we
9:03
need to remember that Christ gave us
9:06
victory over everything and that victory
9:08
comes through one thing and one thing
9:10
only and that's the word of God. So when
9:14
he comes and attacks you, when he comes
9:17
and tells you you're not good enough,
9:19
when he comes and tells you that you're
9:22
doomed to failure and you're doomed to
9:24
all these things, remember what Jesus
9:26
said, it is written. So if Jesus said it
9:29
is written, we need to know what is
9:31
written.
9:33
Uh if you're struggling with things, you
9:36
know, uh Job 31:1 says, "I made a
9:39
covenant with my eyes when I should
9:41
think upon a maid." Speaking this verse
9:43
becomes a defense and a declaration.
9:46
He's talking about dealing with lust.
9:48
But there's so many verses that apply to
9:50
every single thing in our life that we
9:53
have to realize just how much power we
9:55
have through God's word.
9:58
You got areas in your life that are
10:00
weak. We all do. We're broken. were
10:02
people that were uh we were co um
10:07
directed by sin in our lives and we
10:09
become Christians. Now we have to learn
10:11
how to overcome those things that we
10:13
were fighting. And so to do that we need
10:15
to know what God's word says about that
10:17
particular situation so I can speak to
10:20
it straight up and say you have no power
10:23
over me because the word of God says
10:24
this is who I am. This is what I am.
10:27
This is how I overcome the enemy.
10:31
Scripture, when you declare it in faith,
10:33
it disarms temptation.
10:37
The word of God also strengthens us in
10:40
battle.
10:42
Spiritual warfare is exhausting.
10:45
Doubts, weariness, trials often drain
10:47
us. But the word strengthens and revive
10:50
us. Psalms 119:105 says, "Thy word is a
10:53
lamp unto my feet and a light unto my fa
10:56
path." The sword is not only for
10:58
striking but also for guiding and
11:00
sustaining. God's word renews faith when
11:03
our hearts are heavy. Romans 10:17
11:06
declares, "So then faith cometh by
11:08
hearing and hearing by the word of God."
11:10
The more we hear and declare scripture,
11:12
the stronger our faith becomes. We need
11:15
to actually hear it. You know, you
11:17
should get into the habit of when you're
11:19
facing these things, read that scripture
11:21
out loud so that you can hear it.
11:25
Faith comes by hearing.
11:28
Hearing by the word of God. Isaiah 40 40
11:31
and31 is a very familiar passage of
11:33
script scripture but it says they that
11:36
wait upon the Lord shall renew their
11:38
strength. They shall mount up with with
11:40
wings as eagles. And Philippians 4:19
11:44
says my God shall supply all your need
11:46
according to his riches and glory by
11:48
Christ Jesus. Don't just read the Bible
11:52
in crisis. Feed on it daily. So your
11:54
soul remains strong because the word of
11:57
God gives us light and direction in our
12:00
battle against the darkness.
12:04
And our word and the word of God also
12:06
secures our victory in Christ. If you
12:09
believe what it says in the word more
12:11
than what you can see, then you gain
12:13
victory in Christ. Revelations 12:11
12:16
tells us that we overcome
12:19
him, the enemy, by the blood of the lamb
12:22
and by the words of our testimony. The
12:24
word in our hearts become a testimony on
12:27
our lips, releasing our powers. When we
12:30
look at that scripture of I will hide
12:33
thy word in my heart that I might not
12:35
sin against thee. What happens is when
12:38
the enemy comes against us, all of a
12:41
sudden we have power over all the powers
12:45
of the enemy. He no longer has power
12:47
over us because we're pulling up from
12:49
within from our spiritual man, our heart
12:53
what God's word says and be by faith we
12:56
activate it and we put it to into use.
12:59
So we need to understand Romans 8:37
13:02
says, "Nay, in all these things, we're
13:04
more than conquerors through him that
13:06
loved us." The strength comes from God.
13:09
It activated through belief in what
13:11
God's word says. And because of that, we
13:15
are able to overcome all the attacks of
13:18
the enemy, no matter how difficult they
13:21
may seem.
13:24
Uh missionaries have done it for for
13:28
from the beginning. They would go into
13:30
places where God's word was never
13:32
preached yet that they were there and
13:35
they spoke what God's word says and said
13:37
by his stripes we are healed. That's a
13:40
basis for spiritual uh for healing and
13:43
for operating in that gift. So
13:47
store the word of God up in your heart.
13:50
speak it out loud so you can hear it.
13:53
Activate it by what you say. And the
13:56
more you do that, the more you're going
13:59
to be able to follow through and
14:01
overcome these attacks that the enemy
14:03
without mercy brings against us because
14:06
his he knows what his in he knows he's
14:10
already been defeated by Christ. But
14:16
when he knows that you know that and
14:19
that you're an error to that, it disarms
14:21
him, especially when you're using God's
14:24
word to your advantage. So there's I'm
14:27
going to give you a few Bible references
14:29
to think about. Ephesians 6:17, Hebrews
14:33
4 and12, Matthew 4:4-10, John 17:17,
14:38
Romans 10:17, Psalms 119 105,
14:43
Revelations 12 and 11, Isaiah 40:31, and
14:47
Romans 8:37. These are scriptures that
14:51
you need to be actively using in your
14:54
spiritual battle against the enemy. And
14:56
remember, the word of God, it's not
14:59
passive. It's powerful. It's not a
15:02
decoration hanging on the wall or put up
15:05
on a shelf. It's a weapon in your hands.
15:08
It's a sword that you can uh use every
15:12
single day. But if you never pull that
15:14
sword out, you can't use it. You have
15:16
nothing to attack the enemy with, nor to
15:20
uh overcome the enemy. A Bible left
15:24
unclosed
15:26
It can't guide you or protect you. When
15:28
you don't have God's word actively
15:29
working, then you have no way to do and
15:34
overcome the enemy because it's by the
15:36
blood of the lamb, the words of our
15:38
testimony that we overcome him. So God
15:42
calls us not only to own the sword of
15:44
the spirit which but also to wield it
15:46
with boldness in times of dim in times
15:51
of temptation to declare it is written
15:53
in moments of fear proclaim his promises
15:56
in the face of battle lift the sword of
15:58
truth and claim the victory already
16:00
secured in Christ don't fight unarmed
16:03
take up the word sharpen it through
16:05
study strengthen it through memorization
16:07
speak it with authority and then watch
16:10
every stronghold fall before the sword
16:12
of the spirit. I'm going to pray with
16:14
you now. Lord, we thank you for giving
16:16
us your word, sharper than any two-edged
16:18
sword. Forgive us for our for the times
16:21
we've left it unused. Teach us to study
16:23
it, hide it in our hearts, and declare
16:25
it in faith. Strengthen us in
16:27
temptation, renew us in weakness, and
16:29
lead us to victory in Christ. Fill us
16:32
with your spirit so that every verse we
16:34
speak may carry heavenly power. Help us
16:36
live daily with the sworded spirit drawn
16:38
and ready in Jesus mighty name. Amen.
16:42
So, I'm going to leave that with you
16:44
this week. I want you to remember that
16:46
you're not defenseless. That you have
16:49
God's power at the at the ready anytime
16:52
you're ready to use it. And what you
16:55
have to do is literally use it. Don't
16:58
let the enemy defeat you because he's
17:01
convinced you that you're not good
17:03
enough. Jesus paid the price. You were
17:06
You are good enough. You meant so much
17:09
to Jesus. He came and died for you on
17:11
the cross. He said, "All power on heaven
17:13
and earth is given unto me and I give it
17:15
to you." So use the power. It's there
17:18
for you. All you have to do is begin to
17:21
believe it. And and the way that happens
17:24
is faith comes by hearing and hearing by
17:26
the word of God. You need to hear it
17:29
when you're studying. and you have a
17:31
specific scripture you're trying to
17:32
stand on, speak it so that you can hear
17:36
it and speak it over and over and over
17:39
so that you can convince your mind to
17:41
agree with your heart that what you're
17:43
saying is more true than what you're
17:45
seeing.
17:47
And with that, I'm going to tell you
17:48
guys to have a blessed week. Have a
17:50
great week. Remember, God, if God is for
17:53
you, who can be against you? God's word
17:55
is sharper than any two-edged sword. And
17:58
you have the victory in Jesus if you can
18:01
claim it.
