Welcome to Insights. I'm Pastor John and
0:04
today we're going to talk about who,
0:08
when, what,
0:10
and where
0:12
to have a better understanding of how to
0:14
study the Bible effectively and to be
0:18
able to interpret scripture
0:23
for ourselves and apply it for everyday
0:25
life. So,
0:32
uh, Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the
0:35
thoughts that I think toward you, sayeth
0:37
the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of
0:40
evil, to give you an expected end." And
0:43
this is a very, very familiar scripture.
0:47
And um
0:52
how many of you have ever made plans
0:54
that failed?
0:58
And we all make plans and sometimes they
1:02
fail.
1:03
And uh
1:08
this example from Jeremiah
1:12
is really important to look at because
1:16
Judah had done several things
1:20
by kings. One king would serve God, the
1:23
next king wouldn't. And every time
1:28
that there was a king in power
1:32
who didn't serve God, judgment came
1:36
later on. It might not have come
1:37
immediately, but it came. And what
1:40
happens in those situations is God will
1:44
allow things to happen
1:46
because of the wickedness of men's
1:48
hearts to bring them back to repentance.
1:50
And we see this every day. And we forget
1:54
that God's plans for us are good. Stop
1:57
and think about this.
1:59
Jesus came
2:02
and he says, "In my father's house are
2:05
many mansions, and I go there to prepare
2:07
a place for you." That's an expected
2:10
end. That's God's plan for us is to
2:12
spend eternity with him in his presence.
2:16
to get there required Jesus to come here
2:21
and to
2:23
live to be crucified to die to be buried
2:27
and raised from the dead to open the
2:29
door for us to get into that place that
2:31
he promised. So
2:35
when we're looking at things, we need to
2:38
uh
2:41
we before we look at this verse and we
2:44
look at what's going on here, we need to
2:46
uh we need to study it the right way. We
2:48
need to know who wrote it. We need to
2:50
know what the historical setting was. Uh
2:54
we need to know where it was written at.
2:56
And we need to know why it was written.
3:00
And when we begin to interpret scripture
3:02
that way, the scriptures will come alive
3:05
for us. So, we're going to take a look
3:07
at this from that angle of why this is
3:10
important. And I want I want to I can't
3:12
stress enough this point.
3:16
When you're studying the Bible, you need
3:17
to study it in context.
3:20
If I was to look at uh the the scripture
3:23
in John, the shortest verse in the
3:25
Bible, Jesus wept, and I didn't read
3:29
what was transpiring before he wept and
3:32
what took place after he wept. I would
3:35
simply look at that and more than likely
3:38
I would interpret that scripture is
3:39
meaning Jesus had emotions.
3:42
He he cried too. But that's not the
3:46
intent of that scripture. So if I look
3:48
at that scripture in and I look at it in
3:51
context, what came before it, what came
3:53
after it, then I have a better
3:55
understanding of why Jesus wept. And
3:58
that's what we're looking at. We're
3:59
looking at how to study the Bible in a
4:02
way to understand what was going on when
4:05
it was written, who wrote it, where it
4:09
was written at,
4:12
and what the subject was. So that if we
4:16
understand that then we can take a look
4:18
at how does that passage of scriptures
4:20
apply to my life now and that's what
4:24
we're looking at. So this passage of of
4:28
scripture in Jeremiah is very familiar.
4:30
A lot of people quote it. A lot of
4:31
people uh live by it. So let's look at
4:35
it. Who actually wrote Jeremiah 29:11?
4:39
Well, it was written by Jeremiah who was
4:41
known as the weeping prophet. He served
4:44
the he served the kingdom of Judah in
4:46
its final decades. He was there roughly
4:49
40 years as a prophet. He was known as
4:51
the weeping prophet. Um and uh he spoke
4:57
the truth through tears and he he
5:01
remained faithful to God even though
5:04
Judah rejected him.
5:06
And uh we we need to keep in mind how
5:10
this affects us.
5:12
So
5:14
when and what was happening at this time
5:16
around 597 BC
5:20
Babylon conquered Jerusalem.
5:23
This the beginning of the captivity that
5:25
lasted 70 years. And when they took the
5:28
Israelites captive when they took Judah
5:30
captive the city they decimated the city
5:32
they laid waste to it and they took them
5:35
into captivity and they took them to
5:36
Babylon. And there were false prophets
5:40
during the time of Jeremiah that kept
5:43
promising a quick return. But Jeremiah
5:46
sent a letter telling them to build
5:48
houses, plant gardens, and seek peace
5:50
because the captivity would last 70
5:52
years.
5:54
So
5:56
if we understand that, if we wrap our
5:58
mind around the fact that God brings
6:00
messages to us and through not only
6:04
through his written word which we have
6:06
but through prophetic uh um utterances
6:10
for us, we begin to understand that God
6:13
has a plan. Uh and that's Jeremiah. And
6:18
the other thing that uh we have to
6:21
realize is there's a lot of things
6:22
happen in this world and a lot of times
6:25
we don't understand them but when we get
6:28
to the other side of them and look back
6:30
on them we can see how God was moving
6:32
things for our benefit.
6:36
So where was this letter written from?
6:39
Where what was going on? The letter was
6:41
written from Jerusalem by Jeremiah
6:45
to the captives in Babylon.
6:49
And he's showing us that even when we're
6:53
in our darkest hours and we're going
6:55
through the worst things, he still cares
6:58
about what happens to us. And even with
7:00
Israel, with Judah in Babylon, in a
7:03
foreign land, God was still speaking to
7:06
them. And uh one of Jeremiah's
7:09
contemporaries at the time is also
7:11
Ezekiel. A lot of things there and
7:12
Ezekiel was actually there in the
7:14
captivity.
7:16
Uh so what is what is the purpose of why
7:19
Jeremiah wrote this? Well, the first
7:22
purpose was that it was God's sovereign
7:24
purpose to restore his people
7:28
after discipline. And that ouch
7:31
discipline that hurts. Well, why would
7:34
God discipline his people? because they
7:36
were a rebellious nation
7:39
and uh and they went totally against
7:41
everything that God said was good. They
7:44
chose and went bad. And we're living in
7:47
those same kind of times today. People
7:49
today what's bad they call good and
7:51
what's good they call evil. And um so
7:55
we're living in the same atmosphere.
7:58
And these are warnings to us as
8:01
believers to take a look around of
8:04
what's going on. go back into the Old
8:06
Testament and read about the judgments
8:09
that God brought against Judah and
8:11
Israel and what happened and where it
8:14
and what the results were. And but God
8:19
never takes away hope. He there's always
8:22
hope. And one of the things was that
8:25
even though they were going to they were
8:27
facing this hardship, there was hope
8:29
because at the end of this hardship, he
8:31
would restore them. And when he did
8:34
restore him, that's where we get the the
8:36
books of uh
8:38
uh
8:42
uh in Nehemiah and Esther.
8:45
Uh this is after the restorations.
8:49
And uh
8:52
here's the thing. We're living in the
8:54
world, and if you look at the church
8:56
world today,
8:59
as sad as it is to have to admit this,
9:02
you can't tell much difference between
9:04
what's going on in the church and what's
9:05
going in the world. And that's a warning
9:08
from God. We're supposed to be a
9:10
peculiar people set aside for service by
9:12
God. We're not supposed to look like the
9:15
world. We're not supposed to act like
9:17
the world. We're not supposed to equate
9:19
things like the world does. Yet it has
9:22
infiltrated every area of life. And you
9:26
know, when you do that, when you begin
9:28
to walk away from what God's plan is,
9:30
you get into trouble.
9:32
And uh that's one of the things it says
9:35
when we've stepped into their world, we
9:38
have to listen to what God's word says
9:41
to our world, which is repent for the
9:44
kingdom of heaven is at hand. I've come
9:46
to give you life and to give it more
9:48
abundantly. But that requires obedience
9:51
and not the kind of obedience that's
9:53
forced but that's voluntarily.
9:56
So
9:58
some things to to remember. Every
10:00
believer knows the feeling of living in
10:03
a kind of exile waiting for change. Have
10:06
you ever been in a situation whether
10:07
you're praying for a job, a house, a
10:09
car, or whatever it might be, and it
10:12
feels like you're going through things
10:14
every day,
10:16
yet you've a lot of times you feel like,
10:18
did God actually hear me? Uh why am I
10:22
going through this?
10:24
And
10:26
when that happens and our hearts are are
10:30
hurt,
10:32
God declares, "I know the thoughts that
10:34
I think towards you." In other words,
10:35
God's purpose is to give you a much
10:38
better life to live. So,
10:44
the four things that are that are going
10:46
on here is the the Jews are taken into
10:50
exile.
10:52
Jeremiah writes a letter to them.
10:56
He tells them it's going to last 70
10:57
years and that there is a divine purpose
11:01
in what they're dealing with and that's
11:03
to bring them to repentance.
11:06
And so we're going to take a look at
11:08
this and try to open up God's truth
11:13
truths about God's plans. So the first
11:16
one we're going to look at
11:19
is God's thoughts are personal and
11:22
they're purposeful. And that's in the
11:25
verse where it says,"For I know the
11:26
thoughts that I think toward you." So
11:29
his thoughts are personal and
11:31
purposeful. The word in Hebrew that he
11:34
used here is makashaba and it means
11:37
plans, designs and intentions. God's
11:40
plans are not random. He personally
11:42
knows and thinks towards his people.
11:46
Israel's captivity was not chaos. It was
11:49
correction and it leading to
11:52
restoration. Let's
11:56
take a look at this. So, you're in your
11:58
car, you're going somewhere, and if
11:59
you're fortunate enough to have a newer
12:01
car, it has a built-in GPS system. If
12:04
not, most smartphones today have a GPS
12:07
system. And when you're going somewhere,
12:10
your GPS recalculates while you're
12:13
driving down the road. If you turn on a
12:15
road here, which is different than the
12:18
uh which is different than the route it
12:21
laid out for you, it recalculates and it
12:24
adjusts to where you went to get you
12:27
back on track to where you're supposed
12:29
to be going. Hasn't quit. It's
12:31
rerouting. God never cancels what's
12:34
going on in our life. He redirects it.
12:38
Um because we get off track. We get off
12:41
the the course that he's laid before us.
12:43
He has to apply a correction to bring us
12:46
back to where we're supposed to be
12:48
going. And when those things happen,
12:50
there's something called a delay. And
12:53
the delays are not God denying you. He
12:56
knows where he's leading you. The delays
12:59
are he's having to correct you to get
13:01
you back on to the path he laid before
13:03
you. And to when we're looking at this,
13:07
faith is trusting God's thoughts even
13:09
when we don't understand his timing.
13:13
Someone asked me one time, "How come God
13:15
doesn't answer my prayer?" And I told
13:17
him, "God answers every prayer. He
13:19
answers them one of three ways. He
13:21
either says yes, he says no, or he says
13:25
wait or not right now
13:28
because he can see what we cannot. He
13:31
knows where this will lead you." And so,
13:35
uh, when we're trusting God to be the
13:39
captain of our ship, to lead us where
13:41
we're going, there are times where we
13:44
have no idea where he's trying to get us
13:46
to. So, we have to walk by faith and not
13:48
by sight. In other words, we have to
13:50
believe that where God's trying to take
13:52
us is better than where we're at. And we
13:55
have to trust him to get us to the
13:58
destination he's taking us to, even when
14:00
we can't see it. So once you know his
14:04
thoughts are personal, you can rest
14:07
because they're thoughts of peace.
14:13
God thought God uh God's thoughts lead
14:15
to peace, not evil.
14:18
Thoughts of peace and not evil. Peace.
14:21
The word peace in Hebrew is shalom and
14:25
it means wholesome safety and res
14:28
wholeness, safety and restoration. And
14:31
God's correction is not meant to
14:33
destroy. It's meant to develop. Develop
14:36
what? Character and integrity. Two very
14:39
vital things every Christian needs in
14:41
their life. You must operate in
14:43
character and integrity to walk
14:46
according to God's purpose.
14:50
And when God chasen us uh chastises us
14:54
or he chasens us uh it's not out of
14:57
vindictiveness or pain or he's not
15:00
trying to hurt us. He's trying to
15:02
correct us. He's trying and it's done in
15:04
love. And it's like it's like a potter
15:09
who's making vessels. Have you ever
15:11
watched somebody working on on a
15:13
potter's wheel? They bring their clay to
15:16
the pot uh to the wheel. They and and
15:18
they work this clay and they work the
15:21
clay and they work the clay and then
15:22
they'll start forming up a base and
15:24
they'll find a flaw in it and they'll
15:26
collapse it back down and they'll start
15:28
over and bring it back up and then if
15:31
it's still got flaws in they'll collapse
15:33
it again and they'll bring it back up
15:34
until they produce a usable vessel.
15:38
That's what God does with us. He's the
15:41
potter wear of the clay.
15:43
He shapes it. He doesn't shatter it. He
15:46
doesn't break it. He reshapes it. And
15:50
you know,
15:54
pressure changes things. And pressure in
15:58
our life is often proof that the potter
16:00
still has his hands on you. There's a
16:02
lot of times as we're going through
16:04
things in life that we feel like we've
16:06
been abandoned. We haven't. It's just
16:08
God is reshaping things, reshaping us to
16:12
have a better perspective on what we
16:14
need to do. And when we trust in his
16:17
peace, we discover his promise.
16:23
God's thoughts
16:26
promise hope
16:28
and a future
16:31
to give us an expected end. an expected
16:36
end, a sure hopeful outcome.
16:39
70 years seemed like a long time and
16:42
then restoration would come.
16:45
In Christ, we see the fullest picture of
16:47
that hope, which is our eternal future
16:50
is secure. Now, we're not running 70
16:54
years
16:56
uh and then expecting something to
16:58
change. You know, actually, if you stop
17:00
and think about it, we have a the
17:02
average lifespan in America is about 70
17:05
years for men, a little longer for
17:07
women. Um, and during that time, how
17:10
many times have you been reshaped?
17:14
And how many times, especially after you
17:16
got saved, have you been reshaped?
17:19
Because that's what God does. He's
17:22
trying to create in us a more perfect
17:24
heart, a more peaceful life, a more God
17:28
uh centered existence and consciousness
17:31
towards the things of God.
17:35
When you look at a tapestry, I don't
17:37
know if you've ever looked at a tap
17:39
tapestry, it's like a hanging rug. The
17:41
front of it has this beautiful imagery
17:44
and everything. Have you ever looked at
17:45
the back?
17:47
When you look at the back, it looks
17:50
tangled and messed up and like things
17:53
don't make sense. But when you turn
17:54
around and look at the front, you have
17:55
this beautiful picture that was done
17:57
through either weaving or sewing or u
18:03
and and we have to understand that
18:07
life's messy.
18:10
Life is messy. Even when you're a
18:12
Christian, even when you're serving God,
18:14
life is messy. And because life is
18:17
messy, there's a lot of things that we
18:19
go through. Um, and they're not about
18:22
punishment. They're about reshaping.
18:25
They're about bringing us into a place
18:27
that's better than where we were. And to
18:30
do that, you have to walk by faith and
18:32
not by sight. You literally have to
18:34
trust God to get from point A to point
18:36
B. And if you and this
18:40
things we go through are to produce in
18:42
us the ability to do that. The Apostle
18:45
Paul, he said, "I have ran my course.
18:47
I've kept the faith. I have finished my
18:50
journey and I've earned a crown of
18:52
righteousness." Paul went through a lot
18:54
of stuff. Paul had to just go back to
18:57
his salvation alone. Uh he's on the road
19:01
into Damascus with letters from the
19:04
Jewish court giving him authority to
19:06
take every Christian he found, put them
19:08
in chains, and take them back to
19:10
Jerusalem to be executed. And as he's
19:13
going into uh Damascus,
19:16
Jesus appears to him on the road. And
19:18
all those that were with him could hear
19:21
what Jesus said to him, but they
19:24
couldn't see him. Paul was surrounded by
19:25
this bright light. And in that bright
19:28
light, God shined a light on the
19:30
darkness in Paul's heart, and Paul got
19:33
saved. And Paul's life changed. But that
19:36
was just the beginning. If you look
19:39
through Paul's life, look at all the
19:40
things that happened to Paul. He was
19:43
shipwrecked. He was arrested. He was
19:45
beaten. He was thrown in jail. And his
19:49
desire to share the gospel of God's
19:54
grace to man was much more powerful than
19:58
anything he experienced.
20:02
So when you're going through things,
20:06
remember your story isn't over. God's
20:08
still writing your story. His plan is
20:11
still unfolding. So, if we're walking by
20:14
faith and not by sight, then we have to
20:15
trust that even though it looks ugly,
20:18
God has a plan. And if we stick to that
20:21
plan, we're going to get where God is
20:23
trying to take us. And God's promises
20:26
might carry, but they never fail. It
20:29
says, "Is God a man that he should lie?"
20:32
So it becomes really important that we
20:36
learn
20:39
how to interpret scripture correctly so
20:42
that we can apply it to ourselves.
20:47
God's thoughts towards us are personal.
20:50
His thoughts towards us are peaceful.
20:53
And his thoughts towards us are come
20:55
with promises. And you may be living in
20:59
your own Babylon right now, waiting,
21:02
wandering, and weary. But the Lord still
21:05
says the same thing. I know the thoughts
21:08
that I think toward you. Trust his
21:12
timing. His expected end is good. If I
21:17
if I had focused in on some of the
21:19
things that have happened in my lifetime
21:22
in the last 41 years of serving Christ,
21:26
I would have quit.
21:28
But I kept my faith. I kept focusing on
21:31
what God said as opposed to what I was
21:35
going through. And I came through on the
21:37
other side uh with the victory.
21:41
So
21:42
keep in mind there are certain words
21:44
there. You've got uh makashaba,
21:49
the Hebrew word for designed intentions
21:51
and purposes.
21:54
You have shalom, which is a promise you
21:56
can you can depend on.
21:59
And you can see these very things
22:01
playing out in different places in the
22:03
Old and New Testaments such as Genesis
22:07
uh 50 20 Romans 8 and 28. One of my
22:11
favorite scriptures in all of the Bible,
22:15
uh it says, "For all things work
22:17
together for good to them that love the
22:18
Lord and are the called according to his
22:20
purposes." In Philippians 1 and6, the
22:24
Christ connection, Jesus is the
22:26
fulfillment of God's redemptive expected
22:29
end.
22:31
And remember, even in Babylon, God is
22:35
still building your future. So I want to
22:39
take this opportunity to pray with you.
22:42
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your
22:44
thoughts towards us and that there are
22:46
thoughts of peace and not of evil. And
22:49
when we cannot trace your hand and what
22:51
you're doing, help us to trust your
22:54
heart. Give us patience in waiting hope
22:57
for the future and strength to obey you
23:00
where we are in Jesus' name. Amen. So I
23:05
want to leave that with you. I want you
23:07
guys to remember this. No matter what
23:09
you're going through, God knows where
23:11
you're at. If he hasn't abandoned you,
23:14
he's he's Jesus said himself, "I will
23:16
never leave you or forsake you." So, if
23:19
that's the truth, if Jesus will never
23:21
leave you or forsake you, then you have
23:24
nothing to fear. And fear is the faith
23:27
killer. And faith is the fear killer.
23:32
Whichever one you believe more is the
23:35
one you'll act upon most.
