Good morning. Welcome to Insights. I'm
0:03
Pastor John and today we're going to be
0:05
talking about redeemed.
0:08
So, let's pray. Lord, we just thank you
0:10
and praise you and ask you Lord to open
0:13
our eyes and our hearts and our minds to
0:17
receive from your word and help us Lord
0:21
to understand the depth of your word
0:24
today. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. So
0:29
when we say redeemed,
0:32
we're talking about something that comes
0:34
out of the the law of Moses.
0:38
And uh
0:43
years ago when I first got first got
0:46
saved, one of the first songs I remember
0:50
hearing was uh redeemed. It says, "I
0:54
have been redeemed by the blood of the
0:55
lamb." And uh some of you know that song
0:59
really well. But that uh to explain
1:03
redeemed,
1:06
we need to look into the Old Testament
1:08
into the book of Ruth.
1:11
And what's going on here is Naomi, whose
1:15
husband was IMC,
1:19
had left Judah with his wife and his two
1:22
sons, and they went to Moab. And if you
1:25
don't know who the Moabites were, the
1:27
people that lived in Moab, they were the
1:29
descendants of Lot, of Lot's oldest
1:33
daughter and of Lot. And what happened
1:38
was while they were in Moab, his sons
1:42
married Moabitete women. And then he
1:45
died.
1:47
And then they died.
1:49
And when they left Judah, they left
1:53
because there there was a famine. And so
1:56
they left their property in Judah and
1:59
they went to
2:02
Moab.
2:04
And uh at the end in chapter 4,
2:08
we're we're looking at how
2:13
redemption
2:15
works. And it says Boaz. Then went Boaz
2:19
up to the gate, and sat him down there.
2:21
And behold, the kinsmen of whom Boaz
2:24
spake came by. Unto whom he said, "Oh,
2:27
such a one, turn aside, sit down here."
2:30
And he turned aside and sat down. And he
2:32
took 10 men of the elders of the city,
2:35
and said, "Sit you down here." And they
2:37
sat down. He needed witnesses to what he
2:40
was going to do. And he said unto the
2:42
kinsmen, Naomi that is come again out of
2:45
the country of Moab, sellth a parcel of
2:47
land, which was our brother IMC,
2:50
and I thought to advertise thee, saying,
2:53
"But it before the inhabitants, and
2:55
before the elders of my people, if thou
2:58
wil redeem it, redeem it. But if thou
3:01
will not redeem it, then tell me that I
3:03
may know, for there is none to redeem it
3:06
beside thee, and I am after thee." And
3:09
he said, I will redeem it.
3:12
Then said Boaz, what day thou buyest the
3:15
field of the hand of Naomi, thou must
3:17
buy it also of Ruth the Moabitas, the
3:20
wife of the dead, to raise up the name
3:22
of the dead upon his inheritance. And
3:25
the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for
3:28
myself, lest I mar my own inheritance.
3:32
Redeem thou my right to thyself, for I
3:35
cannot redeem it. Now this was the
3:37
manner in former time in Israel
3:39
concerning redeeming and concerning
3:41
changing. For to con confirm all things,
3:45
a man plucked off his shoe and gave it
3:48
to his neighbor. And this was a
3:50
testimony in Israel. Therefore the
3:53
kinsman said unto Boaz, "Buy it for
3:55
thee." So he drew off his shoe. Now
3:59
to understand what's going on is every
4:02
person in Israel when when they went in
4:05
and conquered the land under um
4:10
uh
4:12
Joshua, every every man was given an
4:15
inheritance.
4:16
So they all had property. And when IMC
4:22
went to Moab,
4:24
he had to sell his property
4:28
with the promise of being able to buy it
4:30
back so that he had money to go to Moab.
4:35
And so after he died and his sons died,
4:40
there was no male heir left in his line
4:43
to redeem the property.
4:46
So the the law stated that if someone
4:50
died without an heir that their near
4:54
kin, the kin closest to them, whether it
4:57
was an uncle, a father, a brother, or a
5:00
first cousin, could redeem that property
5:03
for the person.
5:05
And so that's what's going on here. But
5:08
one of the things about that redemption
5:10
price was when you you redeemed it, you
5:15
also had to take the widow as a wife and
5:20
produce an heir to that person.
5:24
And so the closer kinsman, the one that
5:27
was closer than Boaz,
5:29
he said he couldn't redeem it. He
5:31
couldn't take root to be his wife. So
5:34
Boaz did it. And so afterwards and if
5:38
you know the whole story
5:42
Boaz be was the father of Oed. Oed was
5:46
the father of Jesse and Jesse was the
5:50
father of King David.
5:52
So this reestablished that royal
5:56
bloodline that was nearly lost because
5:59
IMC died. Now
6:02
you might be asking yourself why is this
6:04
important? Why do I need to understand
6:06
this redeemed process that happened in
6:09
the book of Ruth? Well,
6:12
one of the things that we recognize
6:14
about what Jesus did on the cross first
6:16
is the atonement. His blood paid the
6:20
price for our sins.
6:23
And then he redeemed us through the
6:26
sacrifice of his body on the cross. And
6:30
when he said it is finished, he he also
6:34
said everything is now done. And what
6:36
was done? The re he had redeemed man.
6:41
Redeemed them from what? Well, we have
6:43
to go back into Genesis to understand
6:46
exactly what Christ redeemed. When God
6:50
created man, he gave man dominion over
6:54
all the earth. God had created it
6:57
belonged to God.
6:59
He gave man dominion over it. He said to
7:02
subdue it, subdue it and make it fertile
7:05
and make it grow and be my caretaker.
7:08
And if you're a Lord of the Rings fan,
7:10
and I happen to be a Lord of the Rings
7:12
fan ever, it's I it's one of the best
7:15
fantasy fiction books I've ever read.
7:18
Um,
7:22
Aragorn, he's the the king, the return
7:26
of the king. He's the king.
7:30
His his ancestor had established the
7:34
stewards of Gondor. And what they were
7:37
their job was was to manage the king's
7:39
affairs in Gondor
7:42
and to rule over Gondor in his absence.
7:47
So when God created man, he gave him
7:49
dominion over the earth.
7:53
He basically said, "This is my creation.
7:56
I have created all these things and I'm
7:59
giving you possession, dominion over
8:02
this to be my steward of my creation and
8:05
to take care of everything that I have
8:07
created. That was what God that was
8:10
God's commission to man. Well, in the
8:14
fall of the in the garden, that
8:18
dominion, that God-given right to man
8:21
over God's creation on earth was passed
8:25
to
8:26
Satan. He became the god of this world
8:30
when man fell from grace.
8:33
So when we get to the New Testament and
8:36
we get we're at the death, burial, and
8:39
resurrection of Christ. And as he's
8:41
hanging on the cross and he says, "It is
8:43
finished."
8:45
He was
8:48
saying
8:50
to God the Father and the world that the
8:54
redemption price needed to redeem
8:58
dominion over the earth
9:01
was
9:03
paid. Now, this redemption price, what
9:07
what did it entail? Well, it took
9:10
Jesus's life to pay the price. And if
9:14
you look at when Abraham was commanded
9:18
by God to take Isaac and take him up on
9:20
this mountain and to sacrifice him, just
9:25
as Abraham's about to drop the knife and
9:29
sacrifice Isaac, God tells him to stop
9:32
and not to harm the lad because the
9:35
sacrifice had been given. And there
9:38
caught by its horns was a ram. and
9:40
Abraham sacrificed that ram that was a
9:44
substitutionary sacrifice for Isaac. So
9:47
when we get into the New Testament and
9:49
we begin to look at what Jesus did on
9:52
the cross, he became the substitutionary
9:55
sacrifice for our sin. This was a debt
9:59
that Jesus didn't owe
10:03
and it was a debt that we couldn't pay.
10:06
So Jesus paid the price and what that is
10:09
is he ransomed us back
10:13
from Satan, the god of this world. And
10:18
in that process, there's a legal process
10:22
involved. And you have to look into
10:24
Revelations chapter 5 to understand at
10:27
the at the scroll
10:30
in heaven. The word goes out. Who's
10:32
worthy to open the scroll? Well, the
10:35
only person that could be worthy to open
10:37
the scroll is the person who redeemed
10:40
that purchase price. So, you have this
10:42
scroll that's in the hand of God and God
10:46
is sitting on the throne and the four
10:48
and 20 elders are saying, "Who's worthy
10:51
to break the seals? Who's worthy to open
10:54
this?" Well, the only one worthy was the
10:56
person that paid the ransom, the
10:59
redemption price for what is contained
11:02
in that scroll, which is God's wrath.
11:06
And so,
11:08
the lamb, Jesus, slain from the
11:10
foundations of the earth, goes to the
11:14
father who's sitting on the throne. He
11:16
takes the scroll out of his hand and he
11:19
breaks the seals because he's the one
11:21
that paid the redemption price. for
11:24
what's contained in that scroll. And so
11:28
we come to this place where we if if
11:31
we're truly seeking God and truly
11:33
looking at this whole situation, we
11:36
understand that everything that God told
11:40
Moses to write down, which is in the
11:42
book of Leviticus, the law
11:45
was all designed for the Jewish nation
11:49
as a whole, the Hebrews, the Israelites,
11:53
and for us who were grafted in through
11:55
Jesus Christ to be able to recognize
11:58
that every single thing that's written
12:00
in there was a a forerunner, a shadow of
12:05
what was to come, which was Jesus. And
12:08
Jesus fulfilled every single part, every
12:13
curse, every penalty, every judgment
12:18
contained in Leviticus. Because there
12:22
are there are things if you do this,
12:24
this will happen to you. If you're
12:25
caught in adultery, you're supposed to
12:27
be taken out and stumped. All this was
12:29
in Leviticus. And Jesus redeemed us from
12:33
that wrath.
12:35
And that's what our hope is. It says the
12:38
heirs of salvation are not appointed
12:40
under wrath. Well, to become an heir of
12:43
salvation requires us to accept what
12:46
Jesus did by faith. It says, "For grace
12:50
are you saved, and not by works, lest
12:53
any man should boast." And that's
12:56
telling us we can't work our way into
12:58
heaven. We have to accept the gift of
13:01
God to be able to get into heaven. And
13:03
that gift is Jesus Christ. So that's why
13:06
Romans 10:9-10 says what it says about
13:09
if you confess with your mouth, believe
13:11
it in your heart that God has raised
13:13
Jesus from the dead, you shall be saved.
13:16
For that confession can only be made by
13:19
faith
13:22
in Jesus Christ and receive him receive
13:26
his grace by faith that what he said he
13:30
would do.
13:32
So as we're looking into the perfect law
13:34
of liberty which is the gospel of grace
13:37
we come to this point where we realize
13:40
that the law was given to teach us to
13:42
recognize who Jesus is. it. But there is
13:47
no way that you can actually live by the
13:49
law successfully because it says if you
13:52
live by the law, you have to keep every
13:55
part of it. And if you fail in one area,
13:57
you're guilty of it all. Grace says that
14:01
you receive Jesus as Lord and Savior,
14:05
and his grace alone, what was done with
14:08
his blood, is enough to pay the penalty
14:11
for breaking the law. Now what we're
14:14
supposed to do as we progress forward in
14:18
our relationship with Christ is we are
14:21
supposed to become more like Christ. He
14:23
says let this mind be in you which is in
14:25
Christ Jesus to the pulling down of
14:27
strongholds and the renewing of your
14:29
mind. So we have to be submit ourselves
14:34
through obedience to the word of God and
14:39
allow it to shape us and form us and
14:42
transform us into the image of Christ.
14:46
He says we're heirs and joint airs with
14:48
Christ. And that means that when Christ
14:51
returns and you can read in Revelations
14:54
when Christ returns we return with him.
14:59
And so it's very like super important
15:03
for us to wrap our mind around the
15:05
thought and the idea of what God gave us
15:10
is that he redeemed us just like Boaz
15:13
redeemed Naomi and Ruth and restored to
15:16
them what they had lost. And that's what
15:20
Jesus did for us when he said it is
15:23
finished. What did he restore? Our
15:25
relationship, our access to God. Um I
15:29
I've talked about this a lot because
15:31
there's certain things that's happened.
15:34
When Jesus said it is finished and he
15:36
gave up the ghost, the earth went dark.
15:39
The light of the world had passed on. It
15:42
was earthquake and God rent the temple
15:45
bell from top to bottom. And this thing
15:48
wasn't like a curtain. It was like six 6
15:52
in thick and it was made it was super
15:57
heavy. And God tore it from top to
15:59
bottom and took away what separated the
16:03
Holy of Holies where God would inhabit
16:06
the temple from the people. And so we
16:10
now through Christ's redemptive work on
16:12
the cross now have direct access to God.
16:16
We don't need a libitical priest who's
16:19
going to go and sacrifice, make a
16:22
sacrifice and a blood atonement and all
16:24
of these other things for our request to
16:27
come before God and to be heard because
16:30
Jesus did all of that in our place when
16:33
he went to the cross. So when you think
16:37
about that word redeemed,
16:41
it's a very very broad
16:45
statement and it encompasses everything
16:47
in our lives. It covers everything.
16:51
There's no part that God left out when
16:54
Jesus said it is finished. Everything
16:57
was paid for at that point and it became
17:00
active when Jesus came out of the tomb.
17:04
And that was the when he came out of the
17:06
tomb, the establishment of the new
17:08
covenant, one that was made in the
17:11
hearts of men rather than on tablets of
17:13
stone. And so as you're going through
17:18
your day and going through the things
17:20
that we go through every day, and we all
17:22
go through things, the idea
17:26
is that you would focus on what Jesus
17:29
said and what Jesus did and what Paul
17:33
wrote in all of his letters so that we
17:37
understand that we are no longer slaves
17:40
to sin. We don't have to go back there
17:42
ever again.
17:44
that everything that God said we are, we
17:47
are. And everything that God said that
17:49
we could do, we can do.
17:53
Not because of anything we did, but
17:56
because of the very things that Christ
17:58
did.
18:00
And so when you are thinking about your
18:03
day and thinking about things that you
18:05
went through in life, remind yourself
18:08
that you are the redeemed.
18:11
And you're the redeemed because he said
18:14
so. He redeemed us. He paid the ransom
18:18
price. He used his own blood to make
18:20
atonement for our sin. And so we have
18:26
access to God where people didn't
18:28
before.
18:30
And so I want you to keep that when you
18:32
see yourself in a mirror, tell yourself,
18:34
I am redeemed. I'm no longer under the
18:37
curse. I'm no longer under the the
18:40
penalty and the judgment and of the law.
18:46
I have been set free. And he whom the
18:48
son is set free is free indeed. So I
18:52
want you to keep that in mind this week.
18:54
Heavenly Father, we thank you for an
18:56
opportunity to share your word once
18:58
again. Help us, Lord, to keep our focus
19:00
on you and the things that you would
19:02
have us to do. Help us, Lord, to always
19:04
recognize that it's not anything that we
19:08
did, but it's because of what you did
19:11
that gives us that grace that we have to
19:13
enter into your presence. We're careful
19:16
to give you all the praise and all the
19:18
glory in Jesus name. Amen. We'll see you
19:22
guys next week.
