Welcome to Insights. This is Pastor John
0:04
and today we're going to be talking
0:05
about the acceptable year of the Lord
0:08
and how it applies to us today. So
0:11
Isaiah 61:es
0:14
1 and the first part of verse two, it
0:18
says, "The spirit of the Lord God is
0:20
upon me because the Lord hath anointed
0:22
me to preach good tidings unto the meek.
0:25
He had sent me to bind up the
0:26
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to
0:28
the captives, and the opening of the
0:30
prison to them that are bound, to
0:33
proclaim the acceptable year of the
0:36
Lord. Let's pray. Lord Jesus, we ask
0:38
that you just help us to open our hearts
0:41
and minds to receive from you today and
0:44
that you help us to understand how this
0:47
word from you, how the acceptable year
0:49
of the Lord is still active and applies
0:52
today. in Jesus name we pray. Amen. So
0:58
when Jesus was uh in the wilderness was
1:02
tempted of the devil, he was there 40
1:04
days and 40 nights and he returns to
1:08
Galilee.
1:10
And this is in uh Luke chapter 4 starts
1:13
in verse 14. I want you to hear
1:16
what's going on here because this is
1:19
Jesus beginning his public ministry. It
1:22
says, "And Jesus returned in the power
1:24
of the spirit into Galilee, and there
1:27
went out of fame of him through all the
1:29
region roundabout. And he taught in
1:31
their synagogues, being glorified of
1:34
all. And he came to Nazareth, where he
1:36
had been brought up, and as his custom
1:39
was, he went into the synagogue on the
1:42
Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
1:45
And there was delivered unto him the
1:47
book of the prophet Isaiah."
1:50
That's Isaiah. And when he had opened
1:52
the book, he found the place where it
1:54
was written, "The spirit of the Lord is
1:57
upon me, because he hath anointed me to
1:59
preach the gospel to the poor. He hath
2:02
sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to
2:04
preach deliverance to the captives, and
2:07
recovering of sight to the blind, and to
2:09
set at liberty them that are bruised, to
2:12
preach the acceptable year of the Lord."
2:15
And he closed the book, and he gave it
2:17
again to the minister, and sat down. And
2:20
the eyes of all them that were in the
2:22
synagogue were fastened on him. And he
2:25
began to say unto them, "This day is
2:28
this scripture fulfilled in your ears."
2:32
And all bear witness and wondered at the
2:34
gracious words which proceeded out of
2:36
his mouth. And they said, "Is not this
2:38
Joseph's son?" And he said unto them,
2:41
"You will surely say unto me this
2:44
proverb, physician, heal thyself.
2:46
whatsoever we have heard done in
2:48
Kaepernom Capernaum, do also here in thy
2:52
country. And he said, verily I say unto
2:55
you, no prophet is accepted in his own
2:58
country. But I tell you of a truth. Many
3:01
widows were in Israel in the days of
3:04
Elias. When the heaven was shut up three
3:07
years and six months, when great famine
3:09
was throughout all the land, but unto
3:11
none of them was Elias sent, save unto
3:14
Serepta, a city of Saddon, unto a woman
3:18
that was a widow. And many lepers were
3:20
in Israel in the time of Adysius the
3:23
prophet. And none of them was cleansed,
3:25
saving non the Syrian. And all they in
3:28
the synagogue, when they heard these
3:30
things, were filled with wrath, and rose
3:33
up, and thrust him out of the city, and
3:36
led him unto the brow of the hill,
3:37
wherein the city was built, that they
3:40
might cast him down headlong. But he
3:42
passing through the midst of them went
3:45
his way.
3:47
And uh
3:49
the very first thing that I want you to
3:51
notice about this is what Jesus said. He
3:53
said, "The spirit of the Lord is upon me
3:55
because he hath anointed me to preach
3:57
the gospel to the poor.
4:00
He has sent me to heal the
4:01
brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to
4:04
the captives and recovering of the sight
4:06
to the blind, to set at liberty them
4:09
that are bruised, and to preach the
4:10
acceptable year of the Lord." You know,
4:13
for the last 2,000 years, it's been the
4:15
acceptable year of the Lord. We're all
4:19
commanded by Christ to share the gospel.
4:22
And if we take a look in Mark chapter
4:25
16, Jesus gives us the parameters of how
4:29
our ministry should function as
4:32
believers.
4:36
And uh starting in verse 15,
4:40
he says, "Go you into all the world and
4:42
preach the gospel to every creature. For
4:44
he that believeth and is baptized shall
4:46
be saved, but he that believeth not
4:49
shall be damned. In these signs shall
4:51
follow them that believe. In my name
4:53
shall they cast out devils. They shall
4:55
speak with new tongues. They shall take
4:57
up serpents, and if they drink any
4:59
deadly thing, it shall not hurt them.
5:02
They shall lay hands on the sick, and
5:03
they shall recover. And you'll hear a
5:06
lot of times people say things like,
5:08
"Well, that was only in the apostles
5:11
time." And uh there's I if you left it
5:16
at that point and focused totally on
5:19
that you could probably say that
5:26
and uh
5:29
Jesus had told his disciples
5:33
that all the things that he did they
5:35
would do also and even greater things
5:39
because he was going to prepare a place
5:41
for him.
5:43
And uh I was looking through this and I
5:46
was thinking about what he said there
5:48
and what he said in uh Acts chapter 1
5:52
uh
5:54
about waiting for the promise of the
5:56
father. In verse four, it says, "And
5:58
being assembled together with them,
5:59
commanded them that they should not
6:01
depart from from Jerusalem, but wait for
6:04
the promise of the father, which saith
6:06
he, you've heard of me. For John truly
6:08
baptized with water, but ye shall be
6:10
baptized with the Holy Ghost not many
6:12
days. S hence
6:16
and he explained that the reason that
6:19
they needed to receive power was so that
6:21
they could become witnesses for him and
6:24
witnesses for what he said back in the
6:27
acceptable day of the Lord. And when we
6:30
get to
6:31
Pentecost, which happened 10 days later,
6:35
um you find out that all of the apostles
6:39
were there, uh gathered in the upper
6:41
room, the 11 that were left,
6:44
plus Mary and the mother of Jesus, and
6:47
all of his brethren, that means his
6:49
brothers and sisters. And uh on the day
6:52
of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit was
6:54
poured out on the church,
6:58
there was 120 in the upper room and they
7:00
all became witnesses.
7:02
And the the power of the Holy Spirit was
7:05
so strong in Peter that even his shadow
7:10
would cause people to be healed.
7:13
And they performed many signs of
7:15
wonders. And people came to the Lord in
7:17
great numbers. And uh after Steven was
7:22
stoned,
7:24
we uh we start
7:28
seeing people everyday people who had
7:31
received the Holy Spirit
7:33
uh beginning to be used in ministry. The
7:36
first one that we see about after the
7:38
stoning is Stephen the church starts
7:40
being persecuted and Philip leaves and
7:44
heads to Samaria and
7:47
uh he
7:50
uh baptizes a unic out in the wilderness
7:54
and then the Lord takes him in there
7:58
uh to uh Samaria. But I want you to
8:02
notice something in Saul's conversion
8:05
which is in chapter nine
8:08
and u
8:12
Saul is on his way to Damascus. He's on
8:15
the road. He's got letters of of
8:18
authority from the Sanhedrin court uh to
8:22
take into custody any person he found in
8:25
Damascus in their synagogues that were
8:28
preaching the name of Jesus. And Jesus
8:31
appeared to him and after he
8:35
told Saul who he was
8:38
and
8:41
the bright light that he was there had
8:44
he was blind
8:47
and uh
8:50
Jesus sends him into the city and listen
8:53
who comes to pray for him it's Ananas
8:57
and there was a certain disciple at
8:59
Damascus named Ananas. Now, this is not
9:02
one of the 12.
9:04
This isn't um one of the 120. This is
9:08
one of the people that was saved under
9:11
the ministry
9:12
of the Holy Spirit through the apostles.
9:16
And he was in and God spoke to him and
9:18
said, "Ananas." And he said, "Behold, I
9:21
am here, Lord." That's the first key.
9:22
When God speaks to you, you have to
9:24
respond. And he said, 'Arise, and go
9:27
into the street which is called
9:28
straight, and inquire in the house of
9:30
Judas, for one called Saul of Tarsus.
9:33
For behold, he prayth and hath seen in a
9:37
vision a man named Ananas coming in, and
9:39
putting his hand on him, that he might
9:42
receive his sight.
9:45
And uh Ananas answered the Lord and he
9:48
said,"Ive heard by many of this man how
9:50
much evil he hath done to thy saints at
9:52
Jerusalem.
9:54
And here he hath authority from the
9:56
chief priests to bind all that call on
9:58
thy name." But the Lord said unto him,
10:00
"Go thy way, for he is a chosen vessel
10:03
unto me to bear my name before the
10:05
Gentiles and kings and the children of
10:07
Israel, for I will show him how great
10:09
things he must suffer for my name's
10:11
sake." And Annias went his way and
10:14
entered into the house, and putting his
10:16
hands on him, said, Brother Saul, the
10:19
Lord, even Jesus that appeared unto thee
10:22
in the way as thou camest hath sent me,
10:24
that thou mightest receive thy sight,
10:27
and be filled with the Holy Ghost. And
10:29
immediately there fell from his eyes, as
10:31
it had been scales, and he received
10:33
sight forth with, and arose, and was
10:36
baptized.
10:39
So this is the the the ministry of the
10:41
church.
10:43
The ministry of every believer
10:46
is to be empowered by the Holy Spirit
10:49
and they should have
10:52
miracles following them in the things
10:54
they do. That's the acceptable year of
10:56
the Lord to come and preach
11:00
deliverance
11:02
uh to the poor, to the brokenhearted, uh
11:06
to restore sight to the blind. And um a
11:10
lot of times in the church people get
11:14
focused on well the person that that
11:17
should that performs the miracles and
11:19
does all the things is the pastor of the
11:22
church or some minister somewhere or
11:25
some evangelist that's on the road or
11:28
something like this. But yet that's not
11:30
what Jesus said. Jesus said these signs
11:33
shall follow them which believe. It
11:36
doesn't say these signs shall follow the
11:37
apostles or these signs shall follow
11:39
prophets or these signs shall follow
11:41
evangelists or these signs shall follow
11:44
pastors and teachers. It says these
11:47
signs shall follow them that believe.
11:50
And that's you and I. That's everybody
11:52
who believes in Jesus' name. Uh believes
11:55
in the power of
11:59
God's transforming grace.
12:02
uh that we as believers should be
12:06
operating in those areas. Um I've seen
12:10
it many times in my own lifetime. Uh
12:13
went in and prayed for people that were
12:15
sick, seen God heal people from stage 4
12:18
cancer, bring back uh from the uh brain
12:21
dead patients back to life. Um seen
12:25
people um healed in so many different
12:29
ways. seen people set fe free from
12:32
depression. Uh have seen people's
12:36
um who had heart conditions and and
12:38
we're going to need pacemakers and seen
12:40
God fix their hearts. Um there are so
12:43
many things I have seen to verify what
12:46
I'm saying. So when I speak to you about
12:49
this, I'm not talking about
12:52
just something said in the Bible. It's
12:55
from personal experience. Um, and God's
12:59
not a respector of persons. If he did it
13:01
for one person, he'll do it for anyone.
13:04
And what it requires is for you to
13:06
willfully submit to the leading of the
13:09
Holy Spirit to do what God has called
13:11
you to do. And we're all called to do
13:14
the same thing. We are all called to
13:16
share the gospel of Jesus Christ with a
13:20
lost, broken, and hurting world.
13:23
to bring hope to them that
13:29
by grace
13:31
we're saved and for them to understand
13:34
the power of the cross. It's not a
13:37
simple thing. It's not a small thing.
13:40
It's not something that we should look
13:42
at and say, "Oh, well that happened at
13:43
the beginning of the church, but it
13:45
doesn't happen today." Because that's
13:47
not what Jesus said.
13:49
He said, "I'm the same yesterday, today,
13:51
and forever."
13:52
They said the word of God cannot fail.
13:56
So when we read these things and we look
13:58
at what God has said, we have to begin
14:02
to understand that we should also be
14:05
operating in that area. And so for you
14:08
to do that, for you to actually fulfill
14:10
that this is the acceptable year of the
14:13
Lord.
14:14
Um
14:16
we need to understand
14:18
that there there is God's part which he
14:21
did already when he said it is finished
14:24
and there's our part which is to
14:26
willfully submit to what God said to do.
14:30
And God provides opportunity after
14:33
opportunity after opportunity
14:36
for us to witness.
14:38
Uh when you read in the book of
14:40
Revelations, uh it talks about
14:44
this multitude of people under
14:45
underneath
14:47
uh the throne. And John asked the angel,
14:51
"Who are these?"
14:53
And he says, "These are them which came
14:55
out of the great tribulation, which
14:57
overcame by the blood of the lamb, the
14:58
words of their testimony."
15:00
We're supposed to overcome by the blood
15:02
of the lamb in the words of our
15:04
testimony. Uh Paul was very specific
15:08
about the things that we should do. He
15:10
to put on the whole armor of God that we
15:12
can withstand the ws of the enemy in the
15:15
evil day and to quench all the fiery
15:17
darts of the enemy. Um, but he also
15:21
commanded us to go forward. We're
15:23
supposed to go forward. We're supposed
15:25
to to continue to go forward. Jesus
15:28
didn't say, "Except me as Lord and
15:31
Savior and then sit and wait until I
15:33
come."
15:34
He said uh to the apostles when he
15:37
called them uh when he called uh Peter
15:41
and Andrew, James and John, they were
15:42
fishermen. He says, "Come follow me and
15:45
I will make you fishers of men." They
15:48
already knew what it meant to be a
15:49
fisherman for fish. But Jesus put it in
15:52
a way that they could understand that
15:55
just as they threw nets out into the
15:57
water and drew in the fish that he was
16:00
the net they were going to cast into the
16:01
world to draw all men unto me. And
16:04
that's what he said. He said, "If I be
16:06
lifted up, I will draw all men unto me."
16:08
So when you're going through your
16:11
day-today life and doing the things that
16:13
you need to do, you also have to make
16:16
sure that the that the major most
16:19
important thing you're doing is lifting
16:21
up Jesus for other people to see. I say
16:25
this all the time to people.
16:29
Your greatest tool for witnessing to
16:32
other people is living out your
16:35
testimony. If you say that you are
16:38
saved, that you confess Jesus Christ as
16:41
Lord, that you're a follower of Christ,
16:44
then you're the actions in your life
16:46
should reflect it. Uh he called us to
16:50
come out from among the world. He said
16:52
we're a peculiar people. He said that we
16:55
are supposed to be different.
16:58
And if you look like the world and you
17:01
talk like the world and you act like the
17:03
world, then you aren't anything
17:05
different than the world. And Jesus said
17:07
that's not the case. The case is we're
17:10
supposed to be different. We've been set
17:12
aside. We've been sanctified and we've
17:15
been set aside for service. That's truly
17:17
what holiness is, is being set aside for
17:19
service. And so we have to be willing
17:24
to do what Jesus asks us. We have to be
17:28
uh
17:31
confident that if we go and begin to
17:35
speak about Jesus, he's going to give us
17:37
the words and he's going to give us that
17:39
anointing we need to be able to talk to
17:42
people about him and not only talk to
17:45
him um but also demonstrate
17:50
him in our own lives.
17:53
And uh so I want you to think about the
17:56
fact that it is the acceptable year of
17:58
the Lord. That all the things Jesus
18:01
proclaimed
18:03
when he read that scripture passage out
18:05
of Isaiah and said, "This day is this
18:08
fulfilled in your ears." It has been the
18:11
acceptable year of the Lord ever since.
18:14
And we're as he uses people. He made us
18:18
responsible for the spreading of the
18:20
gospel and he empowers it.
18:24
And so as you're making your way this
18:26
week and you're going through and you're
18:28
looking at all the different things you
18:29
have to do and this is a busy week for
18:31
most Americans, it's Thanksgiving week.
18:35
Uh today is uh Thanksgiving Eve.
18:38
Tomorrow people are going to be should
18:41
be in an attitude of thanksgiving to God
18:43
for all of his bountiful blessings and
18:46
living in a place where we can uh live
18:49
in freedom and have the ability to
18:52
freely worship Christ as as he leads.
18:58
But we also need to remember that we
19:00
have we have a greater responsibility
19:02
and duty to Christ
19:06
and that we have a calling that he's
19:11
placed upon us as the church as a whole
19:14
to be able to go out and share the
19:16
gospel with those that are lost, those
19:19
that are wounded, brokenhearted,
19:22
that are in captivity.
19:25
And that captivity can be a lot of
19:27
things. I mean, addictions,
19:30
um, of all kinds, drugs, alcohol,
19:34
pornography, just go right on down the
19:36
list. These are all things that put us,
19:39
uh, bind us up and keep us from
19:44
finding true freedom in Christ. Uh,
19:49
Jesus said, "He whom the son is set free
19:51
is free indeed." You have a freedom the
19:54
world cannot take from you no matter how
19:56
hard they try. And I want to encourage
19:59
you especially in this week of
20:00
thanksgiving
20:02
to learn to be thankful to understand
20:05
your part in this gospel of Christ and
20:08
that he will use you as readily as he
20:12
will use anybody
20:15
and give him the opportunity to show
20:18
you. So, I want to thank you guys for
20:21
being with me this week. I hope you have
20:23
a fantastic Thanksgiving.
20:26
Um, to everybody that that watches
20:29
around the world, uh, God bless you and
20:31
keep you as we enter into this holiday
20:34
season and prepare to celebrate
20:37
Christmas and, uh, get prepared for a
20:41
new year. So,
20:46
I just want you guys to to feel the
20:48
blessings that God has for you, Jesus.
20:51
We just thank you and praise you for all
20:53
you did. We thank you for your work on
20:54
the cross. We thank you, Lord, because
20:56
you said, "It is finished." And that we
20:59
now have an opportunity to witness you
21:01
to other people that we meet. Lord, we
21:03
just ask right now that you help us to
21:06
focus on you in this time of
21:07
thanksgiving and the things that you
21:10
done and the things that we should be
21:11
thankful for. And we give you all the
21:14
glory and all the praise in your mighty
21:16
name. Amen. We'll see you guys next
