Welcome to Insights. This is Pastor
0:03
John. Today we're going to talk about
0:06
something that's hugely important to the
0:08
church as a whole, and that's to go be
0:10
the church. You know, it's not just
0:13
about going to church. We should go to
0:17
church. It's commanded in Hebrews 11:25.
0:20
But that's not the sum total of our life
0:22
as a Christian. So just going to church
0:26
is not enough. Not only do we have to go
0:29
to church, we have to be the church. And
0:32
to be the church is is a completely
0:34
different thing than going to church. Uh
0:37
Matthew 54 uh 14-6 says, "You are the
0:40
light of the world. A town built on a
0:42
hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people
0:45
light a lamp and put it under a bowl.
0:47
Instead, they put it on its stand, and
0:49
it gives light to everyone in the house.
0:51
In the same way, let your light shine
0:53
before others that they may see your
0:55
good deeds and glorify your father in
0:57
heaven. Let's pray. Heavenly Father, we
1:00
just thank you and praise you. We
1:02
glorify you, Lord. We thank you for you
1:04
giving us the opportunity to be your
1:06
representatives in this world and to be
1:09
the church and to be your arms
1:12
outstretched to the a world that's lost
1:15
in darkness.
1:17
In your precious name we pray. Amen.
1:20
So, I ask you a question. If someone
1:23
asked you, "Where is your church?" You
1:25
might immediately think of a street
1:27
address or a building or a service time.
1:30
But what if Jesus asked you that
1:32
question? His answer wouldn't point to a
1:34
structure, but to people, you and me. A
1:37
flashlight is only useful when it's
1:39
turned on, and a church is only powerful
1:42
when it's lived out. Today, God is
1:45
reminding us church is not something we
1:47
go to. It's something we are. And it's
1:51
important that we keep in mind that
1:53
Jesus called us to be his church. He
1:56
didn't call us to build buildings.
1:59
Buildings are important. Churches uh
2:02
need to gather. They need fellowship.
2:04
They draw strength from one another. But
2:06
that's not where our Christian life is
2:08
lived out. Our Christian life is lived
2:11
out in the world. And our testimony is
2:15
what draws people to Christ. And that
2:18
testimony is not just the words that we
2:20
say to people, but it's the actions by
2:23
which we live by. So going to church is
2:27
good. It's necessary. It's important. We
2:30
draw strength from one another. But that
2:32
is not being the church. Jesus delivered
2:37
those words on the sermon on the mount.
2:39
And his audience wasn't a group of
2:41
religious leaders. or trained scholars.
2:44
It was ordinary men and women. It was
2:46
people looking for answers.
2:49
They were fishermen, tax collectors,
2:51
everyday workers. But he declared to
2:54
them, "You are the light of the world."
2:56
This radical light was a symbol of God's
2:59
presence and truth going throughout the
3:01
Old Testament. Israel was called to be a
3:03
light to the nations. That's Isaiah
3:05
49:6,
3:07
showing the world what life with God
3:09
looks like. Now Jesus transfers that
3:11
calling directly to his disciples and by
3:14
extension to us.
3:17
Notice he didn't say you will become the
3:19
light or one day you'll be the light. He
3:21
said you are the light. Identity comes
3:25
before action because we belong to
3:27
Christ. We are all we already carry his
3:29
light within us. The challenge is not
3:31
whether we have the light but whether we
3:33
will let it shine.
3:36
The cultural backdrop in today's world
3:38
makes it even more powerful. First
3:40
century Judea was under Roman
3:42
oppression. Darkness, political, social,
3:44
and spiritual was everywhere. Yet Jesus
3:47
didn't tell his followers to wait for
3:49
better times or easier days. He told
3:52
them to shine right where they were. In
3:55
the same way, we are called to live out
3:58
our faith in today's world, messy,
4:00
broken, and often hostile to the gospel.
4:07
Church is not a club. It's not a
4:09
concert. It's not a weekly event. It's a
4:12
movement of people transformed by Jesus.
4:16
Too often, Christianity's been reduced
4:18
to a Sunday gathering, but Jesus
4:20
intended it to be an everyday mission.
4:22
The world isn't asking where is your
4:24
building, but where is your impact?
4:28
to call the call to go be the church is
4:32
urgent because we live in a time when
4:35
the world is searching for hope, peace
4:37
and truth. And God has entrusted that
4:40
that mission not to angels and not to
4:42
governments and not to celebrities but
4:45
to his people, you and me. Today, let's
4:48
rediscover what it means to go be the
4:51
church. shining his light, serving with
4:54
our hands, speaking hope with our
4:56
voices, and loving with the heart of
4:58
Christ. You know, there was a a major
5:01
event happen this last week um over in
5:05
in the country of Pakistan. They had a
5:07
huge landslide and it caused massive
5:10
flooding. They had torrential rains and
5:12
massive flooding and people were
5:14
displaced. And the church answered the
5:19
call. They went over there. They worked
5:21
hard rescuing people, evacuating people,
5:25
feeding people.
5:28
Why? Because that's what Jesus said to
5:30
do. That's being the church. And if
5:33
we're going to be the church, we're
5:35
going to have to get involved and shine
5:37
our light into the world. So, one of the
5:40
first things we have to do as Christians
5:44
is we have to be the light in dark
5:46
places. Jesus says, "You're the light of
5:48
the world." Light doesn't argue with
5:50
door with darkness. It simply shines. A
5:54
candle in a dark room doesn't need to
5:56
shout, "I'm here." Its presence
5:58
transforms the environment instantly. If
6:00
you've ever been in a completely dark
6:03
room and lit lit a match or lit a
6:06
candle, you know that even though it's a
6:10
small candle, it produces a lot of
6:12
light. And we live in a world of
6:14
darkness just like that dark room. And
6:16
we're the candle. Jesus empowers that
6:19
candle. It's him that produces the
6:21
light. And we're supposed to be that
6:23
light to the world. It's darkened by
6:26
fear, sin, confusion, and despair. How
6:29
many people do you know are confused
6:31
about who they are and what they are and
6:35
to a point of being violent about it. Um
6:38
because they've been told it's okay. Um
6:42
you're fine just like you are. And in
6:44
fact, there there are very miserable
6:45
people that live that way. People
6:48
stumble because they don't know which
6:49
way to go. And into that darkness, God
6:52
has placed you. Your workplace, your
6:56
school, your neighborhood isn't an
6:58
accident. It's your mission field.
7:02
And you may think, "But I'm the only I'm
7:04
only one person." But remember, even a
7:07
small flashlight becomes incredibly
7:09
valued in pitch black night.
7:14
The people walking in darkness have seen
7:16
a great light. That's Isaiah 9:2. He's
7:18
talking about Jesus has come. Think of a
7:21
lighthouse. Ships don't navigate toward
7:23
the lighthouse because it shouts at
7:25
them, but because it shines consistently
7:27
in the same way people around you are
7:30
watching. Your consistency in kindness,
7:34
honesty, and integrity draws them toward
7:36
Christ. Your testimony is what draws
7:40
people in. your testimony. In other
7:42
words, how you live your life is what
7:46
draws people to Christ. And it's
7:48
important
7:49
that you allow that light to shine.
7:53
So, you have to ask yourself questions.
7:56
Am I blending into the darkness or am I
7:59
shining as a light? Am I hiding my faith
8:02
in Christ because I don't want to have
8:03
to be confronted by people? Or am I
8:06
letting my light shine so that when
8:07
people come up and ask me questions
8:09
like, "What is different about you?
8:13
Why are you so uh seemingly unaffected
8:18
by things going on in the world?" Well,
8:20
I'm unaffected by things going on in the
8:22
world because I have the peace of Christ
8:24
within me. It's important. You have to
8:27
learn how to show people Jesus in you.
8:34
God's light in you is greater than the
8:36
darkness around you. It's important. We
8:39
have to be that light.
8:42
The second thing we have to do when
8:43
we're trying to be the church is we have
8:45
to be the hands that serve. I was
8:47
talking to some of my people in in
8:50
Pakistan and they they evacuated and
8:54
brought to the church in one of the
8:56
cities over there over a hundred people
8:58
that are feeding them and making sure
9:00
they're taken care of because that's
9:02
what Jesus says to do. They asked me,
9:04
"What are we supposed to do?" And I
9:06
said, "Help the people. Feed them. Get
9:08
them out of the floodwaters." And that's
9:10
what they did. And they come back and
9:12
said, 'You know, that was the greatest
9:13
experience I ever had because I got to
9:15
give from my heart. And people responded
9:18
and they were excited and they said, I
9:20
felt like the richest person in the
9:22
world because I was able to give from my
9:25
heart and it didn't matter that it was
9:28
just some simple food. What it was was I
9:31
got to give.
9:33
So let your light shine before others
9:35
that they may see your good deeds.
9:37
That's what Jesus said. Life isn't only
9:39
about words. It's about actions. We
9:43
shine through service. We're not called
9:45
to be rulers. We're called to be
9:47
servants. In the book of Acts, the early
9:50
church gains influence not because they
9:52
had buildings or budgets, because they
9:53
met needs. They fed the widows. They fed
9:56
the hungry. They provided for needs.
9:59
They took care of the sick. They laid
10:01
hands on people and healed them. And and
10:04
they embraced the outcasts. And their
10:06
love was visible.
10:10
And uh Galatians 6:9 says, "Let us not
10:13
be weary in doing good. For at the
10:15
proper time, we will reap a harvest if
10:17
we do not give up.
10:19
During plagues in the Roman Empire, many
10:21
fled cities to save their lives. But
10:23
Christians stayed
10:26
nursing the sick, even those who
10:27
persecuted them. History records that
10:30
this sacrificial love led many to faith
10:32
in Christ." Think about the the plagues
10:35
and the priests and people that stayed
10:37
behind and people were dying from the
10:40
black plague and and there were
10:41
Christians there that were feeding them,
10:43
that were nursing them, that were
10:45
burying them, that were burning their
10:47
bodies, but they stayed there with them
10:48
irregardless of the danger to
10:50
themselves.
10:53
What would it look like for you to serve
10:55
someone this week? That's a question to
10:58
ask yourself. This is being hands to
11:00
serve.
11:02
Maybe it's offering a ride, preparing a
11:04
meal, or volunteering your time. Small
11:06
acts of service become sermons people's
11:09
can see. You are Jesus with skin on. You
11:13
are some in some cases the only Bible
11:16
someone may ever read. So you need to
11:19
make sure that when you're doing things,
11:21
it's Jesus that's getting the credit.
11:25
And then
11:27
you have to be the voice of hope.
11:30
Light doesn't just shine, it guides. Our
11:33
words carry the hope of Christ into
11:35
broken places. Romans 10:14 asks, "How
11:38
can they believe in in the one of whom
11:40
they have not heard? And how can they
11:42
hear without someone preaching to them?"
11:45
Preaching is simply sharing the good
11:46
news. And we are all called to be
11:49
preachers, even though some of us are
11:51
called to be pastors. And those are two
11:53
different things.
11:55
You don't need a pulpit to preach. Every
11:57
conversation can carry light.
12:00
The world is filled with voices of
12:02
despair, anger, and confusion. But your
12:04
voice can be different. One that speaks
12:07
peace, encouragement, and truth.
12:11
Always be prepared to give an answer to
12:13
everyone who asks you to give the reason
12:15
for the hope that you have. 1 Peter
12:18
3:15. The hope you have is what's
12:20
drawing people to you. It's what's
12:22
causing people to want to know what is
12:24
different about you. What is it about
12:27
you that can stand in the middle of this
12:30
this catastrophe and smile? That's your
12:34
testimony. That's what go be the church
12:37
means. Philip in the Ethiopian unic in
12:40
Acts chapter 8. One conversation in the
12:42
desert changed the man's eternity. And
12:44
Phil Philip simply explained the
12:47
scriptures and the man was baptized on
12:49
the spot.
12:52
Who in your life needs to hear words of
12:54
hope? a co-orker, a family member, a
12:56
friend. Don't underestimate the power of
12:59
your testimony. It changes lives. Your
13:03
voice may be the bridge someone needs to
13:05
encounter Christ.
13:07
And uh the fourth point is this, be the
13:11
heart of Christ's love.
13:14
Jesus says in John 13:35, by this
13:17
everyone will know that you are my
13:19
disciples if you love one another. Love
13:21
is the ultimate mark of the church.
13:24
Buildings, programs, and traditions may
13:26
change, but love remains the proof of
13:28
Christ's presence. Love is not
13:30
sentiment. It's sacrifice. It's
13:33
forgiving when wronged, embracing the
13:35
outsider, and choosing unity over
13:37
division. In a divided world, the
13:39
church's greatest testimony is love that
13:42
crosses boundaries of race, class, and
13:45
culture. Jesus died for everyone.
13:49
No, nobody is more special or less
13:52
special than the sight of God. He's not
13:54
a respector of persons. He died for
13:56
everyone. And you, that's something you
13:59
need to have down in your spirit. Jesus
14:01
died for everyone. From the homeless
14:04
drug addict down on Skid Row to the
14:08
biggest, richest man or woman in the
14:11
biggest city. It doesn't matter where
14:13
they are or what they do. Jesus died for
14:16
them just like he did for you.
14:22
He said, 'Above all, love each other
14:24
deeply because love covers a multitude
14:27
of sins. 1 Peter 4:8.
14:31
In the early church, Jews and Gentiles
14:33
who Jews and Gentiles who once despised
14:36
each other worshiped side by side. Their
14:38
unity was so radical that outsiders
14:41
marveled, saying, "See how they love one
14:43
another."
14:45
You know, it's pretty it's pretty
14:48
strange. What actually brought the
14:50
church to the forefront of the world was
14:54
the fact that the Romans destroyed the
14:56
temple in Israel and scattered the Jews
14:59
and the Jew and the Christian church
15:02
didn't run away. Even under the heavy
15:04
persecution that followed, they didn't
15:06
run away. They kept proclaiming the
15:08
gospel of Christ. They kept showing
15:10
people love. They kept praying for
15:12
people. They kept doing the work of
15:16
being servants to God and taking the
15:19
gospel to the world.
15:22
So, who can you love practically this
15:25
week? Is there someone to forgive,
15:27
someone lonely to embrace, someone
15:29
different to welcome? Love is the
15:32
heartbeat of the church, and without it,
15:34
we're just noise. Without true love,
15:37
we're just a social club. And it's
15:41
important that we realize that there's a
15:44
whole lot more to our life in Christ
15:46
than being a social club. So
15:51
the call today is simple yet urgent. Go
15:53
be the church. The world doesn't need
15:55
another Sunday only Christian. He needs
15:58
you to make Jesus the Lord of every day.
16:01
The Lord of your entire life, not just
16:04
your Sunday life.
16:06
Sunday only Christians uh that they they
16:10
have done a lot of damage. But true
16:13
believers can counter that. It needs
16:16
people who shine in the darkness, who
16:17
serve with compassion, who speak with
16:20
hope and love with Christ's heart.
16:21
You're not called to hide your light,
16:23
but to let it shine. Imagine if every
16:26
believer left this place determined to
16:29
live out the gospel this week. Our
16:31
communities would fill it. You know,
16:32
there's over 2 billion Christians in
16:35
this world. There's 420 relig 4,200
16:39
religions and only one with the risen
16:41
savior. So, you have something that
16:43
nobody else has. And there's over two
16:45
billion Christians. One quarter of the
16:47
world's population claimed to be
16:49
Christians. Just imagine what we could
16:51
do if every single Christian on the face
16:54
of the earth grabbed a hold of this
16:56
principle and then did it.
16:59
So this week, go be the church, not just
17:03
in name, but in action. Shine, serve,
17:07
speak, love, and in doing so, glorify
17:10
your father which is in heaven. So let's
17:12
pray. Father, thank you that you have
17:14
called us not only to gather us, your
17:17
your people, but to go as your witness.
17:20
Ignite our hearts with courage to shine
17:22
in dark places, hands willing to serve,
17:26
voices bold with hope, and hearts full
17:28
of love. Forgive us for the times we've
17:31
hidden our light or withheld your love.
17:33
Fill us with your spirit so that our
17:35
lives reflect Jesus wherever we go this
17:38
week. Empower us to live as the church
17:40
in every conversation, every action,
17:43
every moment. In Jesus name we pray.
17:45
Amen.
17:47
Thank you for being with me this week. I
17:50
hope that this has ministered to you,
17:52
encouraged you, inspired you to make
17:56
changes that uh in your own life to be
17:59
more like Jesus. And we will see you
18:02
guys next week. Have a blessed one. And
18:05
remember, Insights is on every week and
18:07
you can watch these all during the week
18:09
and refresh your spirit every day. Thank
18:12
you for being with me today and God
18:14
bless you in all you do.
