Good morning. Welcome to Insights with
0:04
Pastor John. Today we're going to take a
0:07
look at something called real
0:09
evangelism.
0:11
And to understand what real evangelism
0:13
is, first we need to take a look at at
0:17
how we interpret that word in
0:19
evangelism.
0:20
What evangelism is is
0:24
when you go out and proclaim the gospel
0:26
of Jesus Christ and you bring people to
0:29
salvation. When I say the term
0:32
evangelism,
0:34
a lot of times people will look at that
0:37
as evangelist.
0:40
And when we say evangelist,
0:42
your mind brings up images of Billy
0:45
Graham preaching crusades.
0:48
But every single
0:50
believer
0:54
is called to do evangelism, to share the
0:57
gospel of Jesus Christ. So that's what
1:00
we're going to look at today. Matthew
1:02
28:19
1:04
is is going to be our our scripture
1:07
basis. And uh so this is the heart of an
1:11
evangelist is a flame that cannot be
1:13
hidden. Jesus said, "And Jesus came and
1:16
spake unto them, saying, All power is
1:18
given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go
1:20
ye therefore and teach all nations,
1:22
baptizing them in the name of the Father
1:24
and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost,
1:27
teaching them to observe all things
1:28
whatsoever I have commanded you. And lo,
1:31
I am with you always, even unto the end
1:33
of the world." Amen. So,
1:37
let's take a look at that message.
1:41
Um,
1:43
if you discovered a cure for a deadly
1:45
disease,
1:47
would you keep it to yourself?
1:50
Yet, we know we who know the cure for
1:53
sin often keep silent. Evangelism is not
1:57
a chore for the few. In other words,
1:59
it's not just the evangelist,
2:02
but everyone else.
2:05
It's the overflow of a grateful heart.
2:07
The fire within the evangelist is not
2:09
his personality or her personality. It's
2:11
the flame of the Holy Ghost. And when
2:13
that flame burns, silence becomes
2:15
impossible.
2:17
And what it means to carry the heart of
2:19
an evangelist is one that beats with
2:21
Christ's compassion and burns to see
2:23
souls saved.
2:26
An evangelist is one of the five
2:28
ministry gifts that were given to the
2:30
church by Christ. that's listed out in u
2:33
Philippians 4
2:36
11-16 and he says he gave some to be
2:39
apostles and some prophets and some
2:41
evangelists and some pastors and
2:44
teachers all for one purpose which is to
2:48
bring saints
2:51
to maturity in Christ. So at the great
2:54
commission Jesus gave his gave the
2:56
church its mission.
2:59
Now think about this. These are ordinary
3:01
men, fishermen, tax collectors, zealots
3:03
were told, "Go ye therefore." And they
3:06
went out filled with the spirit, and
3:07
they changed the world. In Acts chapter
3:10
2, Peter preaches, "And 3,000 people get
3:13
saved."
3:15
Persecution scattered them, yet they
3:18
went everywhere preaching the word. Phil
3:22
reached Samaria. than one man in the
3:24
desert. Paul, once a persecutor, became
3:28
a preacher to the Gentiles. Evangelism
3:31
is not the work of the strong, but it's
3:33
the work of the surrendered.
3:36
The same spirit that filled them fills
3:38
us today. So, every believer
3:42
is called to be an evangelist.
3:45
Evangelis evangelism is heaven's
3:48
heartbeat. It's the reason Jesus came.
3:51
And I want you to think about something.
3:53
When the church first started in Acts
3:56
chapter 2 and they reached 3,000 one day
3:59
and then they reached uh another 5,000
4:02
just counting the men, not the women and
4:04
the children in a matter of a few days
4:07
and they were bold and they were
4:09
preaching and they were in Jerusalem,
4:10
but they hadn't yet fulfilled what Jesus
4:12
told them to do, which was to go.
4:17
And so the church actually launched
4:20
itself into real evangelism
4:24
because of the stoning of Stephen. Every
4:27
major evangelistic
4:31
uh outreach, every major revival ever
4:34
happened in the country has all been
4:37
fueled
4:38
by someone getting martyed or some bad
4:42
event happening. Um, and it gets people
4:46
outside their comfort zone, and that's
4:48
what's supposed to happen. The word of
4:50
God shouldn't make you sit there
4:52
complacent.
4:54
It should make you content, your
4:55
relationship with God, but it should
4:57
also compel you to go out and reach the
5:01
lost. That's one of the things Jesus
5:02
said, to go into the highways and the
5:04
byways and to invite them in. And if the
5:07
church isn't doing that, it's not
5:10
practicing evangelism.
5:12
So,
5:13
the things that mark an evangelistic
5:16
heart. And anybody can have an
5:18
evangelistic heart. You don't have to be
5:20
quote unquote an evangelist
5:23
according to the ministry gift, but
5:26
rather you should have that heart for
5:28
evangelism in everything you do.
5:31
And and those things that marks an
5:33
evangelistic heart is a person whose
5:36
life is being transformed by the gospel.
5:40
They're moved with compassion. They care
5:43
about the people. They see the hurting
5:45
people in the world and say, "I must do
5:47
something about this.
5:50
They're obedient to God's call
5:54
and they're empowered by the Holy
5:55
Spirit." And we're going to look at
5:57
those four things and how they pertain
5:59
to us as believers. One of the things
6:02
that
6:04
a lot of people miss is transformation
6:08
doesn't just take place at church.
6:11
Transformation takes place everywhere
6:13
whenever a person receives the gospel of
6:17
Christ.
6:19
Transformation takes place
6:23
before preaching transformation though
6:26
is you have to be transformed. Paul said
6:29
if any man be in Christ he is a new
6:31
creature. Saul met Jesus on the road to
6:33
Damascus and his life and his mission
6:36
changed. And a transformed life cannot
6:39
hide the Savior who rescued it. Romans
6:42
1:16 says, "I am not ashamed of the
6:45
gospel of Christ, for it is the power of
6:47
God unto salvation."
6:50
A drowning man rescued from the waves
6:52
will not watch others sink. See, he
6:54
dives in to save them. So, one of the
6:57
things we need to do is we need to let
6:59
the gospel renew us daily through prayer
7:03
and through the word. I made this
7:05
statement several times over the last
7:07
few weeks. The word of God, it h it
7:09
serves two purposes in the Christian's
7:12
life and in the unbeliever's life as
7:14
well. It convicts
7:18
sin. It brings you to a place of
7:21
understanding that
7:25
without Christ, you can't enter into
7:27
heaven. So, it convicts sin and then it
7:30
converts. What does it convert? It
7:32
converts your heart. It converts your
7:34
mind and it renews them.
7:39
A changed life preaches louder than a
7:41
thousand sermons. And this might be
7:44
something that you you're not aware of,
7:46
but people watch you.
7:49
People watch everything you do and your
7:52
testimony is your greatest ministry.
7:57
Uh I told this to someone one time that
8:00
evangelism begins at home. Your first
8:02
mission is to evangelize your own
8:05
family. And that means that you lead
8:08
them spiritually and you lead them in
8:10
the way that they should go. And
8:13
Proverbs 22 and six says to train up a
8:16
child the way he should go and when he
8:17
is old he shall not depart from it.
8:20
So
8:24
we have to realize just how much
8:28
uh
8:31
God has changed our lives and then we
8:34
have to share that uh with someone else.
8:38
It begins with a testimony when the
8:41
gospel is real in you and it shines
8:43
through you. In other words, other
8:45
people see the change in you that was
8:47
brought by the gospel
8:49
actively working in your life.
8:56
The second thing I want to bring out is
8:58
that for your evangelistic outreach to
9:01
be successful, it has to be
9:05
your heart has to be moved with
9:07
compassion. You have to see the need.
9:10
Evangelism without compassion
9:13
is sound without soul. When Jesus saw
9:16
the multitudes, this is Matthew 9:36.
9:18
When Jesus saw the multitudes, he was
9:20
moved with compassion. That word means a
9:24
deep stirring inside. A pain that moves
9:26
to action. Jesus saw thirst behind sin
9:29
and potential behind failure. Andrew met
9:32
Jesus and immediately told his brother,
9:36
"We have found the Messiah.
9:38
Ask God to give you eyes for his people.
9:41
Pray for tears over the lost. And
9:44
compassion moves your feet when doctrine
9:46
alone cannot.
9:48
True evangelism is loving motion. When
9:52
love speaks, hard hearts listen. People
9:55
don't want to listen to someone who
9:56
doesn't have a message that changes
9:58
them.
10:02
An evangelist's heart is obedient to the
10:05
call. Philip heard the spirit say, "Go
10:08
near and join thyself to this chariot."
10:10
That's Acts 8:29. He ran and one man
10:13
found Christ.
10:16
That man carried the gospel to his
10:18
nation and obedience opens divine doors.
10:22
Uh James 1:22 says, "Be doers of the
10:24
word and not hearers only."
10:27
You have to put actions behind your
10:29
faith. A timid believer offers a track
10:33
to a stranger. That stranger becomes a
10:35
pastor.
10:36
Never underestimate small obedience. God
10:38
will ask you to do something simple and
10:40
create something great out of that
10:42
simple thing.
10:44
Obey quickly and completely. Delayed
10:46
obedience is obedience is disobedience.
10:50
Every soul begins with one obedient
10:53
step.
10:56
And a heart empowered by the Holy Ghost,
10:59
that's another necessity. No evangelist
11:01
can work without the spirit. Jesus said,
11:04
"Tear you until you be endued with power
11:06
from on high." Acts 18, you shall
11:09
receive power after that the Holy Ghost
11:11
has come you come upon you and you shall
11:14
be witnesses. The spirit gives you
11:16
courage, courage, clarity, and
11:18
conviction. Peter once fearful stood
11:22
boldly at Pentecost.
11:25
In the Welsh revival, ordinary believers
11:27
filled with the spirit changed towns. It
11:30
wasn't strategy, it was surrender.
11:34
Seek daily infilling through prayer and
11:36
fasting. Depend on
11:39
don't depend on elephant words but on
11:41
his power. And the Holy Ghost is the
11:44
engine of evangelism. Without him words
11:47
are wind and with him they are fire. So
11:50
it's very important for us as believers
11:53
to realize that all of us bar none were
11:58
called to be evangelists. We're called
12:00
to go out and to seek that which is
12:03
lost. And you can't do that without
12:07
uh power from the Holy Spirit. The
12:10
conclusion is that the world is not lost
12:14
for lack of power in the g in the gospel
12:17
but for lack of passion in the church. I
12:20
I want to go back to what we started
12:22
with which was
12:24
um the stoning of Stephen.
12:28
The church was
12:31
active in their community.
12:34
Uh they were distributing food to the
12:39
widows and orphans and the poor, but
12:42
they hadn't stepped outside their
12:44
comfort zone. They were still setting in
12:46
Jerusalem. They were still meeting
12:47
daily, which is not a problem. We should
12:50
probably meet more often than we do.
12:54
But what happened was they hadn't
12:56
fulfilled the great commission. They
12:58
hadn't went, they hadn't left Jerusalem
13:01
yet. And the stoning of Stephven caused
13:04
the church to scatter. In fact, they had
13:06
to relocate their headquarters outside
13:09
of Jerusalem because of persecution.
13:14
And uh it it was that event that led to
13:19
the conversion of Paul. It was that
13:21
event that led Peter
13:24
uh to the house of Cornelius. It was
13:26
that event that caused the church in
13:30
Antioch
13:31
to send out Paul and Barnabas
13:36
because persecution fans the flame. You
13:40
find out if you truly truly believe in
13:42
something
13:44
when it gets hard. So remember, every
13:47
breath we take is borrowed time to share
13:50
Christ.
13:53
Are you feeling worthy or unafraid? It's
13:55
okay. God has you.
13:58
Remember his promise to you. Lo, I'm
14:00
with you always.
14:02
And let the Lord rekindle your fire
14:05
inside you.
14:08
And be like Isaiah. Say, "Here am I.
14:12
Send me."
14:14
And let your life shout, "Jesus saves."
14:18
Be active. Be the one who's there that
14:22
says,
14:23
"I will go.
14:25
I don't know how, but I will go. And
14:28
remember, um Jesus,
14:31
he doesn't call the qualified. He
14:33
qualifies those he calls. He gives you
14:35
the words you need, uh to be able to
14:38
reach out into this world that's lost
14:40
and broken and going to hell and provide
14:43
them with real
14:47
answers. your faith,
14:51
your testimony,
14:53
how you live your life,
14:56
the things that you say are important to
14:58
you. These are the things that people
15:00
look at when they want to see if
15:02
something is real. Did you know right
15:04
now there are more people flocking back
15:06
to church than in
15:09
decades? And believe it or not, 43% of
15:13
those people are men
15:16
and 33% are women. There are more men
15:19
going back to church because of the
15:22
message that's being sent forth. And
15:24
don't sit there and hide your light
15:26
under a bushel basket. Let it shine.
15:29
Yes, people are going to ridicule you
15:31
for what you do. But I want to encourage
15:34
you to do what Jesus said to do, which
15:36
is to go.
15:37
Um,
15:39
when people see you,
15:42
they should see Jesus.
15:45
And you need to make sure that you have
15:49
kept that open
15:51
dialogue about just how important it is
15:55
for Jesus to shine forth out of you. So
15:59
I encourage you this week, be the
16:02
evangelist God called you to be.
16:05
Let your testimony be put out for people
16:08
to see because it will draw them to you.
16:13
And most of all, trust God
16:16
in every situation because he will give
16:19
you the words you need and he will help
16:21
you say the things you need to say. So
16:24
with that, let's pray. Heavenly Father,
16:26
we just ask you right now to give us a
16:27
burning fire within us, Lord, that we
16:30
can go out and do what you've called us
16:32
to do. Help us, Lord, to be an example
16:35
of you because we know that we may be
16:37
the only Jesus someone ever sees uh
16:40
before salvation and the only Bible
16:42
someone ever reads. So, help us Lord to
16:45
do what you've called us to do, which is
16:47
to be a witness
16:50
in Jesus name. Amen. We'll see you guys
16:54
next
