Hi, I'm Pastor John and welcome to
0:04
Insights.
0:06
Today we're going to talk about being
0:07
like Jesus in a broken world.
0:10
And uh you know when children admire a
0:13
parent or a role model, they often mimic
0:17
them, copying how they speak, how they
0:20
walk, even how they laugh. I remember a
0:22
little boy who wanted to be just like
0:24
his father. When his dad wore boots, he
0:27
wanted boots. When his dad read the
0:29
newspaper, he grabbed one, too.
0:31
Imitation flows naturally out of
0:34
admiration. In the Christian life, our
0:37
highest calling is to imitate Christ.
0:39
We're not called merely to admire him
0:41
from a distance, but to reflect his
0:44
humility, his servants, and his
0:46
obedience in our everyday lives.
0:50
So, let's pray. Heavenly Father, we just
0:52
thank you for this opportunity to take a
0:53
look at your word. God, help us to see
0:57
you in us and to learn how to reflect
1:00
that to the world. And we give you all
1:02
the glory and all the praise in Jesus
1:04
name. Amen. So, Philippians 2:5-8 says,
1:08
"Let this mind be in you which was also
1:10
in Christ Jesus, who being in the form
1:13
of God, thought it not robbery to be
1:15
equal with God, but made himself of no
1:18
reputation, and took upon him the form
1:21
of a servant, and was made in the
1:23
likeness of men. And being found in
1:25
fashion as a man, he humbled himself,
1:28
and became obedient unto death, even the
1:31
death of the cross."
1:33
So everything in Christ's life was an
1:35
example to us of how to live our lives,
1:37
how to uh relate to other people, how to
1:41
share with people what Jesus said.
1:45
So I I really want to look at this
1:48
because it's really important. It's
1:49
something that we need to do. Paul's
1:52
letter to the Philippians was written
1:53
while he was imprisoned in Rome. And
1:56
despite his chains, his tone is filled
1:58
with joy and encouragement. The
2:00
Philippian church was a beloved
2:02
congregation to Paul
2:05
and he desired to see them walking in
2:07
unity, humility, and spiritual maturity.
2:10
In chapter 2, Paul makes a powerful
2:12
appeal. Let this mind be in you, which
2:16
was also in Christ Jesus. He draws their
2:19
attention not to the worldly examples of
2:21
greatness, but to the greatest example
2:24
of all, Jesus himself. This teaching was
2:27
radical in its context. Philippi was a
2:30
Roman colony where honor, power, and
2:33
status were highly esteemed. Leaders in
2:36
that culture sought to climb upward in
2:38
reputation. Yet Paul presents the
2:40
example of Christ who willingly
2:42
descended, leaving heavenly glory,
2:44
embracing servantthood, and humbling
2:47
himself unto death. This is the this is
2:50
the great paradox of the Christian
2:52
faith. True greatness is found in
2:54
humility.
2:56
True authority is found in servantthood
2:59
and true victory in surrender to God's
3:02
will.
3:03
It's not how high you climb but how well
3:06
you serve. Thus to be like Jesus is not
3:09
about external religiosity but about
3:12
inward transformation. It is about
3:14
adopting his mind and living out his
3:17
character. The message is clear. The
3:19
path of Christ is the path we must walk
3:22
if we are all if we are to call
3:24
ourselves his disciples. You know that
3:27
word Christian which was coined first in
3:30
Antioch
3:34
you know is something that we have to
3:36
keep in mind that word means Christlike
3:39
or to be like Christ and um being like
3:44
Jesus may sound simple but it's a
3:46
lifelong journey for every believer. We
3:48
do not merely learn about Jesus. We're
3:52
called to reflect him in thought, word,
3:54
and deed. Many Christians admire his
3:57
sacrifice, but struggle to live his
3:59
example. Yet, Paul makes it plain. The
4:02
same mind that was in Christ Jesus can
4:05
be in us. So, we're going to take a look
4:07
at four characteristics of Christ that
4:10
we're called to imitate. His humility,
4:14
which laid aside glory. his servantthood
4:18
which lifted others, his obedience which
4:22
embraced the father's will and his love
4:25
which endured even under the cross.
4:27
These are four very
4:30
specific things that we can imitate as
4:33
in our own lives and we can strive to
4:35
produce them where other people can see
4:37
them. I've made this statement many
4:39
times. Your testimony does not take
4:42
place at church. Your testimony takes
4:44
place out the world where people see
4:46
you. And if you're if you're living out
4:50
your testimony, you these four things
4:54
should become evident in your life. So
4:58
we're going to explore these we not only
5:01
to understand them but to learn how to
5:02
apply them to ourselves. For the world
5:05
doesn't need more Christians who talk
5:07
about Jesus as James said, but believers
5:10
who live like Jesus. James said, "You
5:13
can show me your faith by your words and
5:15
I will show you my faith by my actions."
5:18
And that's the that is the key. So the
5:21
first one is the humility of Jesus.
5:24
Christ was equal with God yet he made
5:26
himself of no reputation. This humility
5:30
is staggering.
5:32
He He who spoke the universe into being
5:35
took on the form of a servant. Humility
5:38
is not weakness but its strength under
5:41
control.
5:43
It is not thinking less of oneself but
5:45
esteeming others more highly.
5:49
The mind of Christ teaches us that
5:51
status and recognition are not the
5:53
measure of greatness. Services. What you
5:56
do for others reflects Jesus in you.
5:59
Support uh humble yourselves in the
6:01
sight of the Lord and he shall lift you
6:04
up. That's James 4:10. Consider
6:07
a leader who chooses to serve alongside
6:10
their team instead of demanding special
6:12
treatment. Such humility inspires
6:15
loyalty and respect more than any title
6:17
ever could. So ask yourself daily, how
6:20
can I lower myself to lift someone else?
6:24
Genuine humility is shown when we are
6:26
willing to step aside to listen and to
6:29
honor others above ourselves.
6:32
It's big. Uh that is the true essence of
6:38
Christ. When he washed the disciples
6:41
feet, he said the son of man did not
6:43
come to be served but to serve. And he
6:48
set forth the example of the humility
6:51
that we should imitate in our lives
6:53
every day. It's how we serve other
6:56
people that is important, not how we're
6:59
served.
7:02
The servantthood of Jesus.
7:05
This is a big one. Jesus declared that
7:08
he came not to be served but to serve.
7:10
Mark 10:45. His servantthood was not
7:13
symbolic but practical. Washing feet,
7:16
feeding the hungry, healing the sick.
7:19
True servantthood does not seek
7:20
recognition. It meets needs quietly and
7:24
faithfully. To be like Jesus is to take
7:26
up the towel and basin in our daily
7:28
lives.
7:30
Whosoever will be great among you, let
7:32
him be your minister. And whosoever will
7:34
be chief among you, let him be your
7:36
servant. We don't like to hear that one.
7:39
We Everybody wants to be uh out in
7:41
front. They want people to notice them.
7:44
And Jesus says that's not if you do
7:46
that, that's your reward in that alone.
7:50
Think of unsung heroes in churches. The
7:52
one who clean, they set up chairs. They
7:54
pray for others unseen. Though unnoticed
7:57
by men, they're honored by God because
7:59
they mirror Christ's servant heart.
8:02
This week, look for one practical way to
8:05
serve someone without being asked and
8:07
without expecting credit. That unseen
8:10
act of love reflects Jesus more than
8:13
many sermons.
8:16
Keep that in mind.
8:20
Don't do it for the reward here on
8:23
earth. do it for the reward that you'll
8:25
receive in heaven.
8:27
The obedience of Christ, that's pretty
8:30
Christ's obedience was absolute. Think
8:33
about this. This is God in the flesh
8:36
sets aside his godly power and is
8:39
willing to go all the way to the cross
8:41
and to die in our place.
8:44
And he did he does it willingly.
8:48
Christ's obedience was absolute. He
8:50
submitted to the father's will even when
8:51
led to Gethsemane in Calvary. Remember
8:54
while he's in the garden of Gethsemane
8:56
praying that night and he's sweating
8:58
blood. He as he tells God if there be
9:01
another way
9:03
let this pass from me but nevertheless
9:07
let it be thy will and not my will.
9:10
That's true obedience.
9:13
Obedience is the test of true
9:15
disciplehip. It is not enough to know
9:17
God's word. we must do it. Jesus
9:21
obedience shows us that surrender may be
9:23
costly but it always leads to glory.
9:28
Uh Hebrews 5:'8 says, "Though he were a
9:31
son, yet learned he obedience by the
9:33
things which he suffered."
9:35
Missionaries who leave comfort, career,
9:37
and homeland to follow God's call embody
9:39
the spirit of obedience or willingness
9:41
to go wherever God sends them is a
9:43
living testimony of Christlike
9:45
obedience.
9:47
Ask God today, "What step of obedience
9:50
are you asking of me?" Whether it is
9:53
forgiving, witnessing, or giving,
9:55
obedience is the gateway to deeper in
9:58
intimacy with him.
10:01
The last point we want to look at is the
10:04
love of Jesus. We always hear about
10:07
Jesus loves me. Um, God is a God of
10:10
love, which he truly is. But listen to
10:13
this. Above all, Jesus's life was marked
10:16
by love. On the cross, he prayed,
10:18
"Father, forgive them. His love was
10:20
unconditional. It was sacrificial, and
10:23
it was unending." To be like Jesus means
10:26
to love not only those who love us, but
10:28
also those who oppose us. Love is the
10:32
greatest evidence of Christ's likeness.
10:36
John 13:35 says, "By this shall all men
10:39
know that you are my disciples if you
10:41
have love one to another."
10:45
Corey Timboom
10:48
is a unique individual in the world of
10:50
God.
10:52
She survived the Nazi death camps. And
10:54
listen to what she said. She when Corey
10:57
Tinboom forgave a former Nazi guard
11:00
after World War II,
11:02
she reflected Christ's love. That love
11:05
went beyond human ability. It was
11:08
divine. Can you imagine
11:10
having witnessed the things she
11:12
witnessed in a Nazi death camp and the
11:16
Nazi guard that was responsible for
11:20
whatever was going to happen to her,
11:22
live or die, she forgave her for all the
11:26
horrors that she had lived through.
11:28
That's a pretty tall
11:31
uh thing to do.
11:33
So if you're going to apply
11:36
living the love of Jesus, you have to
11:39
choose to love the unlovable.
11:42
You have to send kindness where hatred
11:45
exists. You have to pray for those who
11:47
hurt you. And in doing so, you reflect
11:50
Jesus to a watching world. You heap
11:53
coals of fire upon their head.
11:57
So to be like Jesus
12:01
is the highest calling of every be
12:03
believer. It is not achieved by human
12:05
strength but by daily surrender to the
12:08
spirit. The humility of Christ reminds
12:11
us that greatness is found in lowering
12:14
ourselves. His servantthood challenges
12:18
us to meet needs with quiet
12:20
faithfulness. His obedience calls us to
12:23
trust God even when it costs us dearly.
12:26
And his love compels us to embrace
12:28
friend and foe alike.
12:31
The world is desperate for real
12:32
Christians, not perfect people, but
12:35
transformed people. Your workplace, your
12:38
neighborhood, your family needs to see
12:40
Jesus in you. The question today is not
12:44
do I admire Jesus,
12:46
but am I becoming like him?
12:50
Let us choose today to walk in his steps
12:52
that when we see our lives they might
12:54
say surely they have been with Jesus.
13:00
The Greek word for mind that Paul used
13:02
is fao
13:05
and what it means is to set one's mind
13:07
or to adopt a mindset. Paul's not
13:10
speaking of passing of a passing thought
13:13
but of an internal choice to adopt
13:15
Christ's attitude. In the Old Testament,
13:18
we see a parallel in Isaiah 53, the pro
13:22
prophecy of the suffering servant. Just
13:24
as Christ humbled himself and bore our
13:27
iniquities, Isaiah foretold that he
13:29
would be despised and rejected of men.
13:33
This points to the consistency of God's
13:35
redemptive plan. Humility and suffering
13:38
preede glory. Christ logically.
13:42
Philippians 2 shows us the kinosis or
13:44
the self-mping
13:46
of Christ. Though fully God, he
13:49
willingly laid aside his privileges to
13:51
redeem us. This does not mean he ceased
13:55
to be God, but he that he chose not to
13:57
use his divine power for his own
14:00
advantage.
14:02
The cross becomes the ultimate display
14:04
of humility, servantthood, obedience,
14:06
and love. remember was he's hanging on
14:09
the cross. He h he's there with two
14:11
thieves. One says, "Well, if you're
14:14
truly the Christ, save yourself and save
14:17
us, too." And the other one says, "When
14:20
you come into your kingdom, remember
14:22
me."
14:25
For the believer, the application is
14:27
clear. Our lives must point to Christ by
14:29
embodying these same attributes. To have
14:33
the mind of Christ is to walk the path
14:35
of the cross. trusting that resurrection
14:38
glory follows surrender.
14:43
So I would uh I want to I would ask you
14:46
to answer these questions for yourself
14:49
and these are things to keep in mind.
14:54
So you can do some things like begin
14:57
each morning by praying Lord make me
14:59
more like Jesus today. Choose one hidden
15:02
act of service each week. Practice
15:05
obedience by acting on a specific
15:08
prompting from God. Extend love to
15:11
someone difficult by a kind word or
15:13
deed. And reflect nightly. Did I show
15:17
Jesus in my words and actions today?
15:23
Being like Jesus means adopting his
15:25
humility, servantthood, obedience, and
15:28
love. It is not achieved
15:30
by effort alone, but by surrender to the
15:33
spirit's work. As we reflect Christ, we
15:36
bring his light into a dark and hurting
15:39
world.
15:40
So, I want to pray with you. I would
15:43
like you to focus on becoming more like
15:46
Jesus, even though we're in a very
15:47
broken world.
15:50
And to realize that this is what's most
15:52
important. It's more important than
15:55
career. It's more important than
15:56
success, notoriety, fame, or anything
15:59
else. It's about being like Jesus.
16:02
Heavenly Father, we thank thee for the
16:04
example of thy son. Lord Jesus, we
16:06
praise thee for the thy humility, thy
16:08
service, thy obedience, and thy love.
16:10
Forgive us for the times we have lived
16:12
for ourselves by thy spirit. Mold us
16:16
into thy likeness. Teach us to walk
16:18
humbly, serve faithfully, obey
16:20
willingly, and love unconditionally. May
16:22
our lives shine thy light in this dark
16:26
world in Jesus precious name. Amen. So,
16:29
I want to leave that with you for this
16:31
week. I want you to go out and be like
16:34
Jesus. Show somebody Christ's love. Give
16:37
them an opportunity to see Jesus in you.
16:40
And I guarantee you that you're going to
16:42
find your life much more fulfilling,
16:44
much more productive, and you're going
16:47
to find it a whole lot more peaceful.
16:49
So, thanks for being with me this
16:51
morning. We'll see you again next week.
16:54
And uh remember,
16:57
Jesus has a wonderful plan for your life
16:59
if you're willing to follow his lead.
