Recognizing Evil

Welcome to Insights. I'm Pastor John
0:05
and today we want to talk about
0:08
recognizing evil. It's important that we
0:11
understand what evil truly is. And evil
0:13
is anything that raises itself against
0:15
God.
0:17
And we there there's a lot going on in
0:20
this country right now. Uh hate,
0:23
violence, and all those kind of things.
0:25
And those are all evil. But what I want
0:28
to do today is I want to talk to about
0:30
recognizing evil itself. Because
0:32
sometimes
0:34
we have people and things that are
0:37
presented to us that we initially it
0:40
sounds really good. It sounds like
0:42
they're uh trying to do what's right and
0:45
the intentions behind it are actually
0:47
evil. And so we need to understand some
0:51
things. So we're going to be looking at
0:54
two different passages of scripture
0:55
today. uh in uh 2 Corinthians and in uh
1:02
second Timothy. And what I want to do
1:05
right now is I want to pray. Heavenly
1:07
Father, we just thank you and praise you
1:09
for today. We thank you for your word,
1:11
for your understanding. Lord, we ask
1:13
right now that you help us to see the
1:16
truth in your word and apply it to our
1:19
lives in such a way as that when we
1:21
reach out to people and talk about you,
1:23
Lord, that we're able to present it in
1:26
in truth, in a spirit of love. In Jesus
1:28
name we pray. Amen.
1:31
So in 2 Corinthians chap 11 uh verses
1:36
1-15
1:38
Paul starts talking about recognizing
1:41
false prophets and uh false teachers
1:45
and uh
1:48
verse 14 he says and no marvel for Satan
1:50
himself is transformed into an angel of
1:53
light. Therefore, it is no great thing
1:56
if his ministers also be transformed as
1:59
the ministers of righteousness whose end
2:02
shall be according to their works. Um,
2:05
Satan likes to come in and he likes to
2:09
present himself as something good when
2:12
he's entirely evil. And we need to
2:15
recognize the fact that um
2:19
we're here today
2:21
uh by God's grace alone. We're saved by
2:24
God's grace alone. You can't work your
2:26
way into heaven. But he also puts some u
2:30
he he puts some requirements on us that
2:33
we need to be able to look at what
2:36
people do because their actions matter
2:39
and not just hear the words they say.
2:44
And in second Timothy, he he talks about
2:47
how the world presents what's good as
2:50
opposed to what's evil. And I want you
2:53
to to remember this. He says, "This know
2:55
also that in the last days perilous
2:58
times shall come. For men shall be
3:00
lovers of their own selves, covetous
3:02
boasters, proud blasphemers, disobedient
3:05
to parents, unthankful, unholy, without
3:08
natural affection, truce breakers, false
3:11
accusers, incontinent, fierce
3:15
uh despisers of those that are good,
3:17
traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of
3:19
pleasure more than lovers of God, having
3:21
a form of godliness, but denying the
3:24
power thereof. from such turn away.
3:29
For this sort are they which creep into
3:31
houses and lead captive silly women
3:33
laden with sins led away with diverse
3:36
lusts, ever learning and never able to
3:39
come to the knowledge of the truth.
3:42
Now as Janice and Jambers withstood
3:44
Moses, so do these also resist the
3:47
truth. men of corrupt minds reprobate
3:50
concerning the faith, but they shall
3:52
proceed no further. For their folly
3:54
shall be manifest unto all men as theirs
3:57
also was. So we have to take a look at
4:01
at how people speak, what they stand
4:04
for, what they uh proclaim to be good,
4:09
what they say is important.
4:12
And I want you to think about this. If,
4:17
and this is big, if the things that they
4:20
stand for go directly against the word
4:24
of God,
4:25
then they're
4:28
they're not truthful. They're not
4:29
faithful. They're not uh doing anything
4:32
good. Their motives are purely
4:36
um
4:39
it's about self
4:41
promoting themselves. So let me ask you
4:44
a question, something to ponder about,
4:46
something to think about.
4:49
We have witnessed
4:51
some
4:52
crazy things in the last year,
4:56
uh, attempted assassinations,
5:00
assassination of Charlie Kirk,
5:03
attacks on our law enforcement,
5:06
um, government representatives,
5:09
governors, mayors who get up and promote
5:13
exactly what the Bible says not to.
5:17
Um,
5:19
and the way they do it is they're
5:22
telling you that if you're a good
5:24
person, you have to accept all this evil
5:27
that's going on uh because it's okay.
5:31
And the Bible clearly says it's not. And
5:34
when you re when you begin to study
5:36
God's word and you see what God says is
5:39
good
5:41
and you see what the world says is good,
5:45
you discover that they call evil good
5:49
and good evil. How many times have you
5:52
seen recently
5:55
where politicians,
5:58
newscasters,
6:00
people of all of that nature have come
6:04
out and openly said,
6:07
um, if you stand against this, you're a
6:10
bad person.
6:12
If you stand against abortion, if you
6:15
stand against um
6:22
attacking people for their faith,
6:25
that you're an evil person.
6:28
I want you to think about this. When
6:31
George Floyd was killed,
6:34
pe there were riots in the street.
6:38
People, a couple dozen people were
6:41
killed.
6:43
Police departments were burnt to the
6:45
ground.
6:46
Police cars were bombed.
6:49
People rioting in in the streets. And I
6:52
use George Floyd because it's the most
6:54
recent. But this goes back to Kansas
6:56
City. That's where it started.
6:59
And the and because and these people
7:02
rioted, they destroyed. uh they they
7:05
took in went into businesses and robbed
7:09
them, busted out their windows, took the
7:12
belongings. These are people's
7:13
businesses
7:14
simply because it was convenient. It was
7:17
right there and they continued to do it.
7:22
Now, let's contrast that with the most
7:25
recent event.
7:28
Charlie Kirk was assassinated at uh Utah
7:32
Valley University.
7:35
There were no riots.
7:41
There were no bombings.
7:44
Police departments weren't attacked.
7:48
What you saw happen was Christians came
7:51
together and first they prayed
7:54
and then they put up remembrance
7:56
memorials to Charter Kirk because he was
7:58
shot because he stood for something
8:00
real. And um you have all these false
8:04
narratives out there that he was a
8:06
racist that he was he was anti-gay,
8:09
anti-LGBTQ,
8:11
all this kind of stuff that he he was
8:12
filled with hate speech and racism. And
8:16
if you actually go back and watch
8:19
his videos and things that he did and
8:21
said, you will find out that's not true.
8:28
But it uh suits the narrative of causing
8:32
division of actually taking Christians
8:35
and putting them in a bad light because
8:37
Christians didn't riot.
8:40
We we didn't go burn down cities. We
8:42
didn't attack people. We didn't throw
8:44
rocks. We didn't throw bottles. We
8:45
didn't uh launch fireworks. We did we
8:48
didn't um do any of those things. We
8:51
stopped and we prayed
8:54
and we set up prayer vigils.
8:58
And then I watched the memorial service
9:02
and was probably the biggest church
9:04
service I think I've ever seen. You
9:06
could feel the presence of the Holy
9:07
Spirit in that place even through the
9:09
television. I didn't go there
9:11
personally.
9:13
And you could feel God working in
9:15
people's hearts. And you had people who
9:18
got up to speak and o
9:22
exception, they all said the same thing.
9:25
This is a moment to turn to Christ. This
9:27
is a moment to seek that which is good.
9:30
Understanding that Charlie didn't want
9:33
people to write because he got killed.
9:35
He wanted people to pray. He wanted
9:36
people to go to church.
9:39
And that's the point.
9:42
We as Christians have to come to the
9:45
place where we say enough. We're going
9:48
to do what the Bible says. And then you
9:50
get a lot of people saying, "Oh, we
9:51
shouldn't be this. We shouldn't be
9:52
that." But you know, it's not said that
9:55
in the Bible. It says that we're
9:56
supposed to pray for our leaders, that
9:58
God puts leaders in place. He puts them
10:01
there to exact certain things. And you
10:03
can look it up in Romans chapter 13.
10:06
uh he says there are he puts people in
10:09
place and I made this statement
10:13
uh right after the election when
10:16
President Trump was reelected and what I
10:19
said was this. I believe God put Joe
10:22
Biden in as president of the United
10:24
States so people could see the evil that
10:26
these people promote.
10:28
And after four years, we decided to
10:30
change and to follow God and put
10:34
somebody back in place that promotes
10:36
God, faith, and family.
10:39
And u it's a real fight
10:43
because Satan's number one tactic is if
10:46
he can destroy the family unit, which is
10:48
what God built everything around,
10:51
he can he can destroy this country,
10:54
which was founded on faith in Christ.
10:58
And uh you should do some studying. You
11:00
shouldn't just say, "Oh, this isn't a
11:01
Christian nation." Actually, it is. And
11:04
it was founded that way.
11:07
And uh
11:10
2 Timothy 2:15 says, "Study to show
11:13
yourself approved unto God to work the
11:15
needing not to be ashamed, rightly
11:17
dividing the word of truth." And that is
11:19
your strength. The word of God is
11:22
sharper than any two-edged sword. It
11:25
divides things. It separates things. It
11:27
allows you, if you use the word
11:30
correctly, it allows you to deter to
11:35
distinguish what is evil. And you need
11:38
to see it. You need to look at it and
11:41
you need to stand against it. You need
11:43
to take a stand and say enough.
11:46
I am following Christ
11:49
and I am going to stand against that
11:51
which is wrong.
11:53
So, as you go through this week,
11:55
remember you have people that have been
11:58
voted into office in this country that
12:01
promote evil. They promote division.
12:04
They promote the destruction of family.
12:07
What they want is a a
12:12
populace that allows the government to
12:14
tell them what to do, how to do it, and
12:16
where to do it. And that's not the
12:18
purpose of government. The purpose of
12:20
government is to enforce law.
12:23
and to uh enact the will of the people
12:29
and uh as as members of the body of
12:33
Christ, we need to be able to walk out
12:35
amongst them and say, "No, I stand for
12:38
what's right. What you're doing is
12:40
wrong." And uh you need to not only have
12:43
convictions in doing so, but you need to
12:45
know what the word says about it. You
12:47
need to be able to tell people. And
12:50
here's the key. You have to do it in
12:53
love. You have to do it in a way where
12:55
it shows that Jesus loves these people
12:58
who are walking a far off. They are
13:01
walking and doing things that go against
13:03
God's word. Yet Jesus still loves him.
13:05
Jesus still went to the cross. He said
13:08
the last thing he said as he hung on the
13:10
cross is father forgive them for they
13:12
know not what they do.
13:15
And so the idea is not to demonize them
13:20
but to convert them. The word of God,
13:23
the power of the word of God is that it
13:25
convicts and it converts. It convicts
13:28
the sinner of his sin and it converts
13:30
him into a believer when he accepts
13:33
Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and he
13:36
becomes justified in the sight of God
13:39
and able to go forward and begin to
13:41
change his life according to God's word.
13:43
And it's God's word that does it. It's
13:46
the sincere washing of the water of the
13:48
word that removes the stain of evil
13:51
because of the shed blood of Jesus
13:53
Christ. And so as you go through this
13:57
week, some are having traumatic week,
14:00
some are having real issues. Uh and I
14:04
don't make light of them and I don't
14:06
laugh at people who are having issues.
14:09
Um, but the source of the answer is
14:12
always Jesus.
14:14
And so as you are making your way
14:16
through your week, keep Jesus at the
14:20
beginning of everything. Keep him first.
14:22
Let people know what you believe.
14:26
And do it in love. Do it with
14:29
conviction.
14:31
allow people to tell you what they think
14:34
because if you don't engage in dialogue
14:37
with them, you're not going to have an
14:39
opportunity to present the gospel. But
14:41
above all things,
14:44
promote the gospel. Tell people what
14:46
God's word says. So, I want to leave
14:49
that with you this week. I want you guys
14:51
to keep in mind that this fight is real.
14:54
It's a spiritual battle. This is not a
14:57
physical battle. This is a battle
14:59
between the forces of good and the
15:03
forces of evil.
15:05
And
15:07
Ephesians chapter 6, it tells you that
15:10
we wrestle not against flesh and blood,
15:11
but against spiritual wickedness in high
15:13
places. So your fight is against
15:17
spiritual wickedness in high places. So
15:20
remember,
15:23
do what God's word says.
15:25
Seek after that which is good.
15:29
be willing to stand up for what you say.
15:31
The Bible also says that we have to be
15:33
able to give account for ourselves to be
15:36
instant in season and out. You need to
15:38
be prepared because you spent time with
15:40
God because you're going to be
15:42
confronted and you need to know what to
15:45
say. And the it says the word says Jesus
15:48
said, "I will give you the words you
15:50
need at the moment." But to have those
15:52
words available, you're going to have to
15:54
be able to
15:57
know what God's word says, you got to
15:59
read it. You got to study it. And don't
16:01
just read it from cover to cover and
16:03
say, "Oh, I read the Bible through in a
16:04
year." Read it. Learn it. Understand it.
16:10
If you ask God, "God, I don't quite
16:12
understand, but but can you can you open
16:15
my understanding?" He will do it. That's
16:17
one of the things that's one of the jobs
16:19
of the Holy Spirit is to lead you into
16:21
all truth and understanding.
16:24
So prepare for the week,
16:28
do what God wants you to do and be a
16:31
witness. We'll see you next week. Thanks
16:34
for joining me today on Insights.
