A lot of us need to work to reset our
0:01
nervous system because today's world is
0:04
constantly inundating us with stimulus.
0:07
We can't go anywhere without lights and
0:10
computers and phones and apps. And I
0:14
mean, we can't even really go to
0:15
restaurants anymore without interaction
0:17
with apps. I mean, we are constantly
0:20
inundated and overwhelmed with stimulus
0:23
and environmental cues that draw our
0:25
attention. And so we're not living in a
0:27
slow society like we once were. There's
0:30
also chronic uncertainty in today's
0:33
current situation. Uh geopolitically,
0:36
we've got a lot of instability and
0:37
uncertainty creating stress. You know,
0:40
very frequently, especially if you're
0:42
someone who watches the news. We're not
0:44
in a time where we have a lot of
0:46
recovery time. We go go. We don't offer
0:49
ourselves rest. We judge rest and we
0:52
don't understand and put into practice
0:55
habits like relax and rest as part of
0:57
our healthy way of being. And so
1:00
adaptation today requires intentional
1:02
regulation. We've got to really
1:04
understand that this happens. And then
1:06
we've got to do things proactively
1:09
building into our schedule that
1:12
introduces rest. And this includes safe
1:15
relationships, people that you can
1:17
connect with on a regular basis and talk
1:20
about the stresses in your life and be
1:22
in connection, which in healthy
1:24
relationships, we can co-regulate with
1:26
one another. I've got several shows on
1:28
coping skills. And we want to introduce
1:30
body- based practices. These can be
1:33
meditation. These can be yoga practices.
1:36
This can be breath work. But being in
1:39
the stillness, a prayer is another way
1:41
that people often bring into body the
1:44
invitation to slow down and to be
1:46
introspective and to be more present
1:48
with self. We've got to change the way
1:51
we look at the concept of rest. We
1:53
shouldn't be feeling guilty when we
1:55
rest. We need to understand that as a
1:57
healthy way to interface with our life's
2:00
pressures and our life's circumstances.
2:02
And we need to have more self-compassion
2:05
for ourselves and for others when that's
2:07
not something that often happens.
2:10
Healing isn't about the absence of
2:12
stress. It's not about not being
2:14
stressed again and living in this world
2:16
of total zen relaxation. That's not
2:20
realistic for really any of us. It's
2:22
about becoming flexible and responsive
2:25
and more resilient. And in so doing, our
2:28
body benefits, thus our nervous system
2:31
benefits. Remember, our nervous system
2:34
learned what it needed to survive
2:36
because of our environment. And now with
2:38
awareness and support, the right tools
2:41
and actions and behaviors and habits, it
2:44
can learn something new. We are
2:46
incredibly adaptive species and we can
2:48
learn. So, if this episode resonated
