On D-Day, June 6th 1944, the SS Sambut was carrying troops, vehicles, ammunition and fuel across the Channel — and never made it to Normandy. German coastal guns at Calais tore into her, then the Royal Navy finished the job with a torpedo rather than let a burning, explosive-laden wreck drift into the invasion fleet. 136 men were lost.
82 years later, she's still standing upright off Dover — one of the most intact wrecks in the Channel. In this dive I'm joined by Will and Pete (thanks to Chris Webb and Mutiny Divers for the boat) to go inside her: the telemotor helm that once steered her, cooked-off 20mm anti-aircraft rounds, forks and crockery from the men who lived aboard her, and the cargo mast still standing over the wreck.
Rust tells a story. This one's about a ship that was sunk twice in one day — once by the enemy, once by her own side.

And one of the things that that really

amazed me was just how intact some of

the wrecks in this part of the English

Channel are.

I've dived quite a few other Liberty

ships, but the Sam But really stood out.

It was It was so much to see down there

and it was so preserved.

It's upright, intact.

And during this dive, I'm going to show

you a load of things that are closely

tied to the sinking.

We're going to see ammunition that's

cooked off due to the inferno that that

blazed on the wreck. You're going to see

So, you can see there we go. Well, I may

where we're on our way. We're starting

the descent. Now, the thing that Dover

is at famed for really is the the

visibility. It's let's go with variable.

Some people simply won't go to Dover

because they say the viz is too bad.

I have to say my experience on nine days

diving there was was it was kind of

mixed. We had some days that were not

very good. In fact, some days it were

really poor. But, then we had some other

days where it was entirely workable. And
4:28
today is probably a good example of

that. Now, it's not super brilliant.

It's not 10 m of viz that you sometimes
4:34
get down this end of the channel. But,
4:37
what more than makes up for it is the
4:40
size of the wrecks and how intact they
4:43
are and you know, frankly, how much
4:45
there is to see on them.

This is our second dive on this wreck.

The first dive the shot was on the
4:51
seabed just on the starboard side in
4:53
about 50 m. On this dive, as we're going

to see very shortly, the shot is on the
4:59
top of the wreck and in about 40 m. So,

so instantly there you can see a huge

difference between this the Samba and

many of the wrecks that I dive. So,

there's a difference, you know, it

stands 10 m off the seabed, which is

which is incredible.

Dover, I think is a much underrated dive

location in the UK. I the those nine

days opened my eyes. What I would say is

if you are thinking of going to Dover,

I'd strongly encourage you to look up

There is the diver in front of me. That

I think when we were uncertain of the

that we're sitting on top of the wreck

The Liberty Ship that we dive a lot in

uh used to be like this, certainly when

I first dived it 35 years ago. It was

probably not quite as intact as this,

but certainly had decks at this kind of

level. Not not as intact as these ones,

but they they were definitely there.

The other thing I should probably

mention is what Will is doing, which is

he's tied his arm with that blue rope

onto the wreck, and then he's folding

the the grapple up. And what that means

is that when the skipper comes to

release the shot,

the the grapple won't hold us to the

wreck. The blue rope will break when he

puts enough force on it, and then

obviously everything will come back up

to up to the ship up to to Chris on the

surface. So, it's a slight variant on

the technique that we use in Plymouth,

but but relatively similar. The idea

that you tie in and that secures the

shot to the wreck, but also you've got a

means of getting your

the actual shot, the grapple, back up.

In Plymouth, we have one with we tend to

use one that's got bendy tines. Here in

I think that's probably a technique that

works better when you've got shallower

Um obviously, what you don't want to be

doing on on deeper wrecks is using a

minute or 2 minutes of your bottom time

there's never with diving, I think, one

perfect solution. There's just different

solutions, some of which work for your

The other thing to mention is on all of

these Dover dives, Will and me were

can see occasionally popping into view,

as it is there, the dive computer on my

wrist. It's not my standard Shearwater,

with the Liberty Freedom.

Not a computer I I had any experience

with previously, so it was really

interesting. I think Will had on this

And during this week, we dive with all

these different computers. We also had a

Ratio, we had an OSTC 5, and we both use

The really nice thing about being able

to use all of these dive computers

next to each other for so many dives and

dives at reasonable depths is that you

get a really good feeling for the

individual idiosyncrasies, what works,

what doesn't work. And the information

that I get from doing this, I'm not

going to really say testing, it's more

using these computers,

those ribs, or pretty much all the

plating has gone in the majority of the

wreck. So there you go, you can see I've

gone up another deck there. This is is

where the exit is, and I'm going to head

a moment. But you can see that I've just

spotted something on the seabed there.

Those kind of coppery

uh things. I mean, the first thing

there, that's a a fork. But then here,

you can probably see that I'm picking

some stuff up, and those are 20-mm

anti-aircraft ammunition. I recognize

them because I've seen identical things

on other Second World War ships. There

you go, I'm illuminating them really

nicely there.

And I hope you can see them them really

The thing about them is that they've all

cooked off. I.e., they've exploded, not

through being fired, but that must have
22:41
been the heat, the fire. That's what's

caused that 20-mm ammunition to cook

off. They would have had They would have

been a single-piece ammunition. They've
22:50
had a head in it.

The temperature, the the fire, the
22:54
inferno has caused those just to
22:57
explode. No idea where the heads have

gone, but the

the the remains of the cases are there

and there also is a a fork you can see.

And anytime I see something like that in

a wreck,

you know, that fork will have been used

almost certainly by some of the people

some of the men who were on this ship.

You kind of wonder if some of the people

who died, maybe they used that fork.

Maybe some of the survivors, you know,

who knows, but it's it's such a tangible

link with real people

and the event. So, you've got the two

things there. You've got the ammunition,

you've got the fork. That just to me

tells the story of the Sam but and it's

it's really nice to see something like

that on a wreck.
