This B-17 Flying Fortress lies on the seabed off Vis in the Adriatic Sea. In 1944, damaged bombers could reach Vis without crossing open water, but landing a heavy bomber there was extremely dangerous. When this B-17 was hit by flak, the pilot chose to ditch near shore instead. That single decision saved lives. The wreck still shows exactly why.
