He Escaped a Sinking WW2 Bomber... Then Went BACK IN!

Oct 6, 2026
He escaped a sinking WW2 bomber, then risked his life to save another crewman. On 17 December 1944, the B24 Liberator Tulsamerican crashed into the Adriatic near Vis, Croatia. Radio operator Edward Steelandt survived the impact and escaped onto the wing. But when he realised wounded tail gunner James Hazel was still missing, he went back inside the sinking aircraft. He found Hazel and helped him escape. Both survived, and Steelandt was awarded the Soldier's Medal for his extraordinary bravery. I've dived the wreck of Tulsamerican, including the remains of the waist gun positions and separated tail. 🎬 Watch the full Tulsamerican wreck dive on Deep Wreck Diver. #WW2History #Tulsamerican #B24Liberator #Shorts
