Hello.
0:03
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.
0:08
Suicide is a global concern.
0:11
And Africa, including Cameroon, is not
0:13
an exception.
0:15
>> [snorts]
0:15
>> In Cameroon, silence, stigma, conflict,
0:18
bereavement, displacement,
0:21
poverty,
0:23
family problems, trauma, and even
0:25
limited access to mental health care
0:28
makes it very hard to express emotional
0:32
suffering.
0:34
A person who is withdrawing does not
0:37
need judgment.
0:38
But, they need someone to notice,
0:41
listen, and care. If you see someone
0:44
struggling,
0:46
do not tell that person simply to be
0:50
okay.
0:51
Ask,
0:52
"Are you okay? What is happening? How
0:55
can I be of help?"
0:58
Without judging them, you encourage them
1:02
to stay connected and even encourage
1:03
them to seek help when need be.
1:06
Together, let's create families and
1:09
communities who finds it easier to say,
1:13
"I am not okay." without shame. Start
1:16
the conversation. You may be the reason
1:19
why somebody seek for help today.
1:22
Let us move together
1:24
in [clears throat] preventing suicide
1:26
today in Cameroon,
1:28
in our families, and our communities.

1:35
this space with me, and God bless you.
