0:44
round of applause man he been putting it down for quite some time man two more
0:49

1:23
to my brothers the bars podcast i love that collective of just amazing thought
1:29

1:35
very informed at the same time you know they get it from you well you know man I
1:41
know they get it from you i mean I go that far but but if you say it man I'm blushing over here tracy G you know
1:50

1:56
thank you so much for real thank you thank you so much we got a lot to talk about today Tracy we got a lot to talk
2:03
about let's get to it too man first of all I want to start off um today is a big day man uh it's a it's a movie
2:10
called Freaky Tales it's a film it's in theaters today man and it's starring too short is in it um he's a EP it's an
2:18
executive producer um he's a narrator of it all it's loosely based freaky Tales
2:23
is a famous song that came out back in the day if you're from the town you know about it i met this girl her name was
2:30
Joan she loved the way I rock on the microphone
2:35
hey tonight a date you know uh and and I'm really
2:42
proud of you because to come from where we come from and to be able to accomplish what you have accomplished
2:49
it's I won't say it's rare any longer because we've had a lot of people do a lot of great things u but it definitely
2:57
furthers the legacy of amazing eclectic artists that come from the Bay Area that
3:04
have not allowed themselves to be pigeonholed or boxed in and you weren't afraid to leave the bay to go get it and
3:10
then the best thing about it is you come back to the bay all the time to give it all right so congratulation simba has
3:18
his debut film out today freaky Tales man what does that feel like for you man
3:25
it's I can't even explain what it feel like for me because I'm so concerned about what it feel like for us okay
3:32
right short getting his flowers while he's still here you know what I mean ryan and Anna coming to the Bay Area
3:38
lionsgate Macro coming to the Bay Area tom Hanks who's from the Bay Area pedro
3:44
Pascal jay Ellis jake Champion from Avatar like all these people coming to
3:49
the Bay Area on streets that we grew up on what streets did you have them on i know oh man we was over there over there
3:55
by New Parish off Broadway we was on Telegraph uh me and Dominique and
4:00
Normani was moving through uh University wow like we was we was moving through shout out to Stunnman O2 because he
4:08
actually was taking the cast around the bay like taking them to like restaurants and like different clothing spots and
4:14
different things to show them the culture of the bay so just to have that experience because you know how we feel
4:21
we feel like we overlook a lot of people take our sauce and they go put mayo on it you know what I mean and they they
4:28
run off with it that's so deep there's a lot of layers to that that one right there they they do it every time so it
4:36
was like for Ryan and Anna to come back to the Bay and Ryan's from the Bay shout out to Ryan Flack he was like "Nah we
4:42
doing this." Like and Angus Cloud angus Cloud yeah rest in power sleepy Floyd
4:48
come on right like these were things to where they were told that they should go
4:53
build a Oakland in Hollywood they were told to go to a production studio and build a Oakland ryan was like "No we're
5:01
going to Oakland." Yeah like this is going to happen in Oakland it wouldn't have worked any other way wouldn't have worked no other way it had to be
5:07
authentic to Oakland oakland is a very it's almost esoteric in a way like if
5:12
you know you know you could not do a movie on Oakland outside of Oakland we
5:18
the most we the most diverse place in the world in my opinion yes I could be wrong but in my opinion we're the most
5:24
diverse place in the world to where you got all these different cultures different ethnicities different
5:29
restaurants different club owners different clothing brands all these things like we we make this melting pot
5:36
of a gumbo that's so tasteful that you can't get away from but you've been everywhere you've had your you've been
5:41
to New York you know you've been you had your your roots in Atlanta you had your feet in Atlanta as well here in LA as
5:48
well you know you've done a lot of work in LA with Mustard YG all these different guys early on you connected
5:54
with them and that's still your opinion that this is the most Oakland the most diverse place on the planet 10,000%
6:00
really and no no place I've been to Spain uh anywhere in Europe New York like it's
6:08
no place like the Bay it's no place like the Bay like we're the most unique thing
6:14
to us mhm like we don't care about what's going on in the world as long as we happy as long as them warriors
6:21
winning i just saw that last night please no need to bring that up no need yeah as
6:27
long as them warriors winning short got movies out 40 got albums dropping mr fab taking care of the city lord Rab out
6:34
here putting paint where it ain't we happy we have California now let's make
6:40
some noise for that right there back on the west man we back on the west i I do my Oakland work outside of the bay a lot
6:46
you know so I've been like a satellite that's just been I heard about that Grand National you just bought you did i heard about Well man damn they telling
6:53
you about that huh now shout out to my brother Ed Wise i I'll be rolling his Grand National when I'm in the town you
7:00
know the wise guys man uh but yeah but just my my mission was to go outside of
7:05
the bay and plant seeds in different places so when me and King Tech came to LA back in the early 90s and started
7:11
syndicating the show in different places like Philly the Carolas you know um the
7:17
Midwest Chicago and then moving to Oakland I mean moving to um New York in 2000 you know to do MTV that's always
7:25
been my mission to just plant these Oakland seeds everywhere and by the time folks caught up to that movement when
7:31
they when they arrived on the soil they were surrounded by blossoming blossoming
7:37
garden y of opportunity because I've been in places that folks hadn't been to
7:43
and so I wanted to prep the door i wanted to prep that arrival for folks and then people just start like yourself
7:48
this is what I admire about you you from the town but you're from the planet
7:55
the earth is my turf yes the earth is my turf being somebody from the Bay Area man I got confidence you know the things
8:02
we come from how many times they told us we wouldn't be nothing right coming from
8:07
this place oh y'all just on an island over there ain't nobody worried about y'all so I was like you know what let me
8:13
go touch the world let me go really get on these platforms and show the world like y'all think we just all this y'all
8:20
think it's just all hy and it's all dance and it's all No we really come from some game it's a reason Tupac came
8:26
to this place and got his aura it's a reason 40 got his deal in the early 90s
8:31
it's a reason Short was popping in the 80s we was the inventors of a lot of this game that y'all use today you hear
8:38
people talk about broccoli we smoking that broccoli woke up looking for that come from 40 that's from 40 that come
8:44
from 40 that come from that come from our soil so as somebody that's proud of
8:49
that I always felt like you know what if I can't make my sound regional let me
8:54
get out here in front of the world and show them that I'm still from this place and what we represent as a community
9:00
sa's here man you could catch them on Freaky Tales make sure you go in the theaters draymond Green draymond
9:06
defensive player of the year let's talk about it salute to Draymond Green i saw you guys having a on that bar podcast
9:13
having a conversation with Draymond i saw Rab and them talking with him talk about when like people like Stephen
9:20
Curry and some of the professional athletes like Draymond Green or people who played on different football teams
9:25
and baseball teams come to the Bay and a lot of the Bay embraces them and then
9:31
you can see their growth you know and then their love for the Bay what have who have you seen really attach themselves to them man Draymond is
9:37
definitely one of those guys steph Curry is definitely one of those guys even though we lost them klay Thompson is
9:43
definitely one of those guys um these are people that's not even from here but
9:49
came here and just adapted the culture you know Draymond just opened up a new restaurant in San Francisco wow
9:56
congratulations to him for that yeah spot fire spot you know the name of
10:01
it i think it's called like um mis I don't want to say yeah rabac call
10:09
but it's um Indian fusion food wow and we actually went there for Allstar
10:14
weekend i had took my family there and um the food was phenomenal the service was phenomenal and it's something that
10:20
we missing in the Bay as far as like where can we go to get something to eat after 9:00 and the Aviance is sexy right
10:28
the drinks are available the food is good the music is blasting we got somewhere to sit so Dre has been a um a
10:36
big blessing to the Bay and so has Steph Curry steph Curry does a lot of community work um with Mr fab you know
10:43
they just recently Fab just repainted the courts in North Oakland yeah man
10:48
hooping yeah he be out there hooping with the kids so like they mean so much to the community because we forget that
10:54
they're not from there they're so entrenched in the community and what they do we forget sometimes like oh
11:00
they're not from here but they move like they are and we truly appreciate that we Hey Simba's here man we going to talk
11:06
about a lot today but I want to make sure certain things you know I want to make certain certain
11:12
things get mentioned because we were talking with Will Smith last week my big brother that's your big brother man and
11:19
this dude's been in the business for almost 40 40 years plus Will Smith has right and um I made it a point to bring
11:25
your name up in that conversation appreciate that brother yeah man i I had to because I know you have been working
11:30
with Will yeah and and Will I've commended him for being open to that right and I'm curious if you could share
11:37
with us your relationship with Will Smith how it started and and moments
11:42
that you've actually got a chance to sit down and give him advice yeah no um I've
11:48
never gave him advice okay okay okay so let's get that off the table he always
11:54
gives me the advice um I met Will through Omar who is one of his guys and
12:00
me and Omar have a great relationship on the music side and he had called me one day he was like "Yo we getting ready to
12:07
go to Aiza." Um Will was feeling inspired i just want to get some energy around him you know what I mean just to
12:14
kind of like inspire him to really just get out and be the best version of himself i'm like "Easy call." So we go
12:21
to Aiza and um I'm kind of just thrown off like through the whole experience
12:28
like from the minute I get there to the army style security to just everything
12:34
that's going on like I'm just fully thrown off so I get to him and I'm
12:39
like "Nigga I love you." you know that's real
12:47
i just tell him straight up and I told him about Freaky Tales and I was like "Man I just got my first movie roll like
12:54
I'm super excited like I don't even know if it's going to come out like I'm just excited to be a part of this." And we
12:59
got into a conversation about King Richard yes and I was like "How did you channel that like how did you He said
13:05
"Well you know I went to the grocery store and I was pushing grocery carts."
13:11
And I'm like "What you mean?" He was like "If you watch the way King Richard walk he he walk with the grocery cart
13:18
walk like he pushing the grocery cart." And I was like "Damn I never thought of that." So we got into all these
13:24
different conversations of different roles he's played in different things and then he started telling me I asked
13:29
him I said "Why do you still want to do music?" He said "Because I still have something to say." And I'm somebody
13:35
that's done it to where I can offer a level of information that won't be heard from others because they haven't done it
13:41
at my level and when he said that I was like "Okay this cat already know where he's
13:48
going with this album." You know what I mean he already know what he wants to talk about so we went downstairs and he
13:54
started playing me these beats and he's playing me the beats and I'm bobbing to the beats and I start coming up with
14:00
lyrics and he started playing me his lyrics and I'm like what are we changing
14:06
yet like like what are we what are we doing so he literally was like I want to go in this direction i I want to be
14:12
direct with things i want to do this so Will is somebody that already knows what he wants to say okay it just may be a
14:20
thing of and it's the same thing with me sometimes I send him songs I'm like big homie what you think about this he like
14:26
you should change the hook you should change the verse or you should you can make this better and it was the same thing with me and him i would hear a
14:32
certain line and be like "Oh we can make this line better." But he already had it
14:37
ready to go like his album was ready to go it was just small things like "Let's change this word or let's tweak it yeah
14:44
let's tweak this or let's do this." And through that we developed a great relationship to where he's taught me
14:49
just so much as a professional and what it means to be blessed in this industry right a lot of people watch us
14:56
every day and they like "I wish I could live that life i wish I didn't have to get up and go to this job or do this or
15:03
do that." He's somebody that really made me understand how to take advantage of
15:08
that and every moment is an opportunity no just means the next opportunity so when somebody tell you no or nothing
15:15
can't happen just keep going cuz it'll happen and I solely got that energy from him from Will Smith and I'm curious to
15:23
with these well two-part question so if Will used the shopping cart to channel
15:29
King Richard where did you use the channel too short life experience okay
15:35
all right all right so Short you know it short is somebody that's been a player
15:40
in the Bay for years yeah like he's literally been our blueprint to follow as a kid like I used to steal two short
15:47
lines to try to talk to certain women any any in particular any in particular
15:54
any particular i'll buy you any damn thing that you want you want flowers
16:05
you know he was he was always a gentleman in his own way and um when I got the call to actually go for the
16:12
role they had told me about there was this movie that was being shot in the bay it was called Freaky Tales and it
16:18
was all these different characters and I'm like "Okay I'm thinking I'm about to go for like a action role like I'm going
16:25
out for like you know me fighting or doing something crazy." And they was like "Um we want you to go out for two
16:32
short." And I'm like "Are you kidding me like this is somebody I grew up on like
16:38
y'all serious?" They like "Yeah like Tom Hanks is from the Bay the director is from the Bay." feel like they want to
16:44
make it a poignant point that too short was a part of their process and a part of their comeup i'm like "This is easy."
16:51
Not only was it easy they sent me the script and the script was Fight the Feeling the song Fighting Song Fight the
16:58
Feeling the song the literal the lit the literal song Fight the Feeling i'm like
17:04
bro I grew up on this song so literally we go downstairs haley's filming as she
17:11
is now there go Haley right there beautiful partner right there Haley what's up Haley she brought Aiden with
17:17
him the the artist that's That's is your son your amazing son all right so she's
17:22
filming and she's like reading the script back and I'm just rapping the lyrics just literally rapping the lyrics
17:28
i literally posted the audition yesterday on my Instagram uhhuh um and I'm rapping the lyrics and I send it in
17:34
and like two days later um Mark Cheetum shout out to Mark Cheetum from CA he hit
17:39
me back and was like "Yo you got the role." And I was like I know you already knew it i know well nobody going to be
17:46
able to duplicate aunt the way I could do it i watch aunt grow up you know I watch my aunties now my auntie Teresa
17:54
cuz she hate when I say this my auntie Teresa always my auntie had a My other auntie had a crush on Too Short but I
18:01
got an auntie in the beta everybody knows my auntie so when I say auntie they automatically think my auntie Teresa this is not who I'm talking about
18:08
but I got an auntie who had a big crush on Too Short so as a kid I seen how
18:13
women idolize him and wanted to like chorus with him and talk to him and different
18:19
things so once I got that role swear I already knew what to do i knew what the assignment was do you ever thought you'd
18:25
be acting yes you knew it was coming yes yes i always knew this i got a lot more
18:31
that I'm about to do amen um and I was I was held back the past two years that's
18:37
what a lot of people don't know i was kind of held back on the music side a lot of y'all met me through Sway met me
18:43
through a funk flex met me through Results Take Time and LA Leakers and these platforms that helped make me and
18:49
then I was told to not go on them platforms no more by who your record label we ain't going to say that right
18:55
but we're going to say I was told to not go on those platforms no more because I was being considered freestyle man and
19:02
nobody took my music serious so now it became a thing of if I don't have a hit record we can't put music out so So you
19:09
were you were uh with Atlantic though right okay you still with Atlantic no no
19:15
I'm not and shout out to Atlantic i'm not pointing the finger or putting the blame on anybody i think there was just
19:21
a lot of um miscommunication with where the industry was at the time okay you
19:27
got to think where I go viral in a co time right to where I do a freestyle and
19:33
LeBron reposted my album's coming out that following week changed your life yeah changed my life i got a record with
19:39
two chains that's doing 400,000 streams a week but I can't go outside and do a
19:44
show oh because of because of Yeah i can't go outside and capture audience so it was a
19:52
struggle for a lot of people to understand me and then me and the label would kind of combat because they was
19:57
like "Oh we need a song for streaming or we need a song for this." And I'm like you guys sign me as like the cultural
20:04
guy and speak up for the culture what am I doing making songs about the strip club now that's not that's not what I'm
20:11
standing on and nothing against strippers because I love Magic City you know what I'm saying anytime I'm
20:18
in as an artist that's not who I speak for i don't make music for the club i
20:24
make music for us as a people i make music for young black men to be able to say "Hey I don't got to jump in the
20:30
streets hey I don't got to sell drugs you know hey I might not go to the NBA but I still got a shot in believing in
20:37
myself." Yeah i make music for my son to get up one day and look at me like my daddy was an example for me to be a
20:43
better man i don't make music for us to stay in the same place that we come from
20:49
you know what I mean so when I was kind of being forced to do that it's kind of like what are we doing what are we doing
20:55
but who's forcing you like if it's not Atlantic is it it's not a forcing thing
21:01
what it becomes is a curated thing so what you'll realize is the ANR start
21:06
putting certain producers in the room okay they start trying to get you to work with certain writers that produce a
21:12
certain sound and certain writers that write a certain thing and I'm like bro this ain't me you know what I mean this
21:18
[ __ ] just shot 30 people in the hook i ain't never shot nobody in my life
21:24
come on you know what I'm saying like that ain't what I come from so it was just a big confusion and then for me
21:31
when you fail so much on the come up you start listening to these people because you feel like they got the answers
21:37
because I failed so much on my journey coming from the Bay moving to LA trying to get my name known and I'm failing at
21:44
this so when you meet somebody that's like "Hey here's how we get it right." As artists sometimes we listen to the
21:50
last person we had a conversation with because that advice might be a a an
21:56
inspiring moment for us to push forward right but that advice can come from a
22:01
place of somebody's own narcissistic energy of
22:07
what they're trying to do and what they trying to move forward within the building and I fell into the habit of
22:13
that of listening to certain people and making certain records and it confused the consumer and I told myself like once
22:21
I get out of this I will never ever ever put myself in this position again me and
22:26
one of my partners um shout out to Chase Fairbanks we had a conversation last night and it was one of the
22:33
most difficult conversations we ever had because what we realized in that moment
22:39
was a lot of people used our distance against us he's in Philly I'm over here
22:44
and a lot of people use lies and manipulation tactics to be able to make us look at each other with the one eye
22:50
up and it was separating us in the building and once we got to talk about that we figured out okay this is where
22:56
we went wrong here's where we move forward to get it right there you go you know it's interesting because you made a
23:02
lot of great music but there was the sentiment that this doesn't necessarily align with who Simba
23:09
is like you'll hear you on some great songs but it sound like it's some songs that were meant for someone else and
23:16
this is what you're speaking to and I can't I can't fault anybody because at the end of the day I'm my own man that
23:22
decided to play a part of that yeah right so naturally as a young artist Heather B when you seeing some of these
23:29
young cats like I come from having a courtside seat to Rody Rich success i
23:35
seen how it went for Rody i'm I'm seeing Rody go from nothing to something in a
23:41
matter of months like off hard work and in one minute nobody's listening to his
23:46
music and then the next minute he doing this and the crowd screaming sc word for word you know what I'm saying word for
23:52
word than his diamond and he on tour like I'm the person right under that i'm
23:57
watching it i'm watching the Meek Mill and Rody Rich thing like I'm I'm watching it and I'm like you know what i
24:03
gotta I gotta get there but my journey was different it was different from how
24:10
I was supposed to get there it wasn't that I was supposed to follow what Rody and Meek was doing that's what people
24:15
was telling me to do and that's what was confusing the consumer who came to me as
24:21
a cultural guy that speaks up for black community and black men i'm really the wallow of rap the wallow of rap i like
24:28
that i'm really the 19 keys of rap the 19 keys you know what I'm saying shout out to wallow but when they But when
24:35
they telling you like oh people don't want to hear that that's not cool enough like the tempo is it doesn't fit
24:41
playlisting it doesn't do now you going into the studio recording with this in mind so now I'm looking for the beat
24:48
that fits within rap life playlist i'm not looking for the beat that make me feel something fire right you know so I
24:54
kind of lost my way i lost my way of failing within the industry and I had to
25:00
get back to myself in this movie and certain brand deals is what did that for me amen give it up for Simp man come on
25:08
definitely what kind of father you want to be what example are you setting for Aiden and Haley just be better
25:16
be better man just as men as black men you know we we got this veil on us you
25:21
know they all think we just one way they they see black rappers and they think we all shooters you know we all gangsters
25:29
like everybody ain't a gangster that's in the black community i know black doctors i know black lawyers my mama a
25:35
black real estate agent amen you know what I'm saying like I don't I know more black successful professionals than I
25:41
knew black criminals so when I hear terms like black-on-black crime it's like it's more white people killing
25:47
white people than black people killing black people but that's something we put on each other you know what I'm saying
25:52
so it's like for me it's helping my son understand that like the pressure you
25:58
got on you as a black man you got to get out here and show up bro every day so
26:03
even when we in baseball practice like some of the kids they running faster than him they throwing up i'm like "Son
26:09
run catch the ball." Like you you got to show up as a black man yeah man so
26:15
that's some of the things that I try to install in him every day is just showing up as a black man and not letting the
26:21
world make you feel less of yourself but come on we just had this whole conversation we started the show off
26:27
with this morning and I literally said similar exact same things you just said
26:33
and because Heather was giving thanks to a lot of men including horse because
26:39
shout out to horse man you know what man matter of fact let's take a trip back
26:44
into time man this is one of the moment full circle moment this is one of the moments that catapulted Simba's career
26:51
db drop that beat on them man okay let's do this wow that was a day that changed
26:57
my life remember when we first heard that horse that's the oochi Wall-E beat and we got
27:03
Big Horse right here which is crazy from the Ouchi Wall-E song man let me give y'all another story imagine doing that
27:11
right imagine being a new artist um getting your first freestyle and you hitting the label like
27:18
"Yo I just killed this freestyle we should turn it into a song."
27:23
We should turn it into a song because this is going to go viral and this can be a record for me and they like "Oh
27:29
it's just a freestyle." Don't want to care after Monday wow it's
27:36
cool someone from the label said this yeah and it went viral lebron James
27:42
reposted it how many millions of views [ __ ] over 12 million now and it's just a
27:48
song nobody will remember but but imagine if we put a hook on that right
27:53
and we attach that to something that comes out on the album while that freestyle is going now I have the record
28:00
everybody said I didn't have who was the per like sometimes
28:05
it's just the people in position yeah i think Atlantic suffered from within these really the COVID time because a
28:12
lot of this happened during COVID yeah so we kind of gotta look at that as well i don't think it was any one person
28:19
particular fault but but Simba I know you you you light stepping in here whoever
28:25
said that doesn't matter they're going to forget this by Monday probably shouldn't be in the position that
28:32
they're in i agree i'm I don't want you to call that person out okay that's the issue I'm saying is sometimes it's wrong
28:40
people in the right position right you got the wrong person in this position
28:45
like I would have saw that and knew that oh yeah let's put the hook on it let's run with it matter of fact let's get a
28:51
remix we get big horse to jump on it you know yeah cuz people was hitting horse and horse was like "Yo some kid jumped
28:57
on the uchi wall beat like listen to this." And we sat in the kitchen was like "What the who is this?" And went
29:04
crazy it was crazy so we had a whole sit down about that like we was literally trying to put a record together and they
29:11
was like "No it's just a freestyle." And this is what's funny a year later they like "Let's turn it into a record." Nah
29:18
swear to God a year later like "Let's make this a record." And it's like at
29:23
this point it's over with so this is when I go to Fire in the Booth so I said
29:29
"Y'all want to do it again i could do it again." So I go to fire booth and I do it again
29:37
right this time we release GOO goat with it right so it lined up the immediate
29:42
thing I'm kind of like taught to do next totally goes against GOAT and what's
29:49
that matter of fact I'm speaking too soon i'm speaking of Top G top G top G i do Top G
29:56
i go to Africa i came to the label and it's family so we just gonna share and this no offense to Atlantic i love
30:04
everybody that was up there regime change but this is how it went down i went to Atlantic and I said um I got
30:10
this idea i got this song called Top G i want to go to Africa it was like what
30:16
you want some Malcolm X Martin Luther King i'm like no I want to go see my people i want to go touch the soil i
30:23
want to go touch my roots i'm a man of the people put me around my people if
30:28
you put me in the jungle the lion's going to come out i promise you every time I go to Africa I'm like "Give me
30:35
the video budget to pay for my trip." They wouldn't do it i booked the trip
30:40
myself me Aiden Haley we go ourselves i go out there i met this guy named IO
30:46
whose dad had a school out there and it was 1,200 kids at the school and they was using one computer i had a friend in
30:53
Silicon Valley that was getting ready to upgrade their tech system and he had 300 laptops they was getting ready to throw
30:59
away i said "Let me buy these laptops and take them to these kids." He gave me a great discount i took them laptops
31:05
over to Africa to them kids we provided them kids with 200 laptops wow so instead of,200 kids on one computer now
31:12
you had 1,200 kids on 201 computers right so we out there and we moving
31:19
around and I'm meeting a kid named Lucky who tells me he's never ate a cheeseburger black kid 15 years old
31:25
never had French fries and a cheeseburger this is stuff we look down on mhm i buy him a cheeseburger i asked
31:32
him I said "What's your dream?" He say "To go to school." Wow our dream was
31:38
basketball players rappers like all these different his dream was to go to school he's never been to school so when
31:45
I seen this I'm like yo I got to do something i got to say something i got
31:51
to speak up for this like I gotta do something about this it's people living this way in the world i got to say
31:57
something i met this guy named Vector the Viper shout out to Vector he run
32:02
this whole hood in Lagos Nigeria and he comes to me he's like "Yo most of these
32:08
rappers come around bro they give these kids $20 and $100 a pair of shoes and
32:13
they leave and we don't see them ever again he was like "I've never seen somebody that brought laptops to our
32:18
community i appreciate you." He like "Is it anything you want to do?" I said "Man I did want to shoot a music video but I
32:25
didn't want to feel like I was taking advantage of the culture i respect what y'all got going on here and I don't want y'all to look at me like I'm over here
32:31
to get a music video." He said "If that's what you want to do we going to help you do that." We shot the Top G
32:37
video on my way back I'm leaving Africa two days later my layover was in DC they
32:45
send me the video while I'm at my layover i was supposed to fly back to LA i said "You know what i'm about to move
32:52
my flight to New York i need to go holler at the label i need to drop this Friday this got to come out this
32:58
Friday." I move my flight i go to New York i play him the video one of the executives is like "Yo this is genius we
33:04
need to put this out let's go give us six weeks i say six weeks
33:10
wow what do you mean give you six weeks well we got to work it we got We need a roll out i just did the roll out
33:19
i've been in Africa for three weeks you don't see what the hell going on what do
33:24
you mean we need a roll out well we need to do man f that roll
33:30
out put this out Friday we put it out Friday it was my highest viewing video
33:35
to this day right wow two weeks later they come to me they say "Hey um let's
33:42
put out the song with you and the Russell." So I got the idea cuz they looking at it
33:48
like "Okay it's two rappers from the Bay we'll get engagement off this they're the guys on socials boom boom boom." But
33:55
the video with me and Lar Russell was a dream with 12 women in the video totally different me and Africa was man of the
34:01
people mhm y'all confuse my consumer again and when I'm trying to speak up to
34:06
say this ain't the way to go they telling me I don't know what I'm talking about i'm not urgent enough i'm too old
34:13
i rap like a OG wow i'm not I can't make music for streaming i can't do all these
34:20
things so I said you know what i'mma go be an actor i'mma go be an actor because y'all think
34:26
I'm one thing this [ __ ] in me it ain't on me m I can go be an actor an
34:32
influencer a rapper whatever it is I want to be because that's what my mama told me i could believe in myself to go
34:38
be whatever it is I want to be yes sir so y'all could never hold me back y'all think y'all got me with this rap watch
34:45
this freaky tales in theaters this Friday come on man simple in the building man come on come on man and
34:53
guess who we got on the line right now on Northern California's finest no vultures
34:58
podcast and the one and only Lord Rab is on
35:04
yo yo what's up my brother wow family team
35:10
man it's amazing story is going on man as I'm sitting here listening to Simba
35:16
talk it reminds me of something I used to say to him all the time and and Heather B and Sway Tracy y'all going to
35:23
know this can y'all please explain what industry rule number 480 is
35:29
record company people are shady i call Quest tried to tell us a long
35:35
time ago you know so and so while he was protecting those relationships y'all
35:41
know I was in the back being militant man trying to like trying to get him fired up because Simba is a great man
35:48
and I think he understanding of everybody even when he wasn't being done so right at the labels man he was still
35:55
keeping it all positive and keeping it you know great for everybody not making anybody uncomfortable so I think that's
36:01
to his credit you know even though it could have been uh detrimental to his career he still kept those relationships
36:07
intact that's one of his superpowers though facts and it's people like Rad
36:12
man who kept me going you know what I mean rab used to call me i'm like Rab I'm done with this bro i'm gonna go
36:18
start a podcast like what we f to do bro let's start a show he like bro you can't do that like you can't you got to keep
36:24
going like you mean too much to what we represent as a culture so it's like when it come to Rab Brownie like we got a
36:32
group chat shout out to the big homie stretch like it's so much I put in the group chat rab be like don't do that
36:38
like don't don't say that don't do that so it's like ra really my big brother
36:44
that's like Heather with sweat oh yeah heather my rap listen i'm going to ra
36:51
you pick up the phone yeah yo Bar would call me too cuz uh we
36:58
would we would I would have conversations i would be curious to what's going on with you because the
37:03
flip side of all this and Horse maybe you could chime in you your MC status
37:09
you as a skilled MC for me is exciting being that you're from the Bay because
37:16
it breaks any pigeon hole or stereotype that people had of Bay Area MC's because
37:23
there's so many styles i used to say "Yeah what's that style you might not be into?" We love that style in the Bay but
37:29
we got spitters you a lot of them Locksmith Russell Lar Russell St spitt
37:35
you know we got spitters Ian Kelly you know we got spitters coming out of the bay man and that was always important
37:42
did you get Was people apprehensive of the way you rapped that was kind of the
37:47
reason I moved out because it was like in the beginning when I was in the Bay a lot of people would like tell me like
37:54
"Man don't nobody want to hear that." You know what I mean like "We want something to to bop to." So I started
37:59
kind of moving around in different circuits from Philadelphia to New York to Chicago and different things and just
38:06
start developing a name of being a great rapper and when I did that I was like "What's a way I could represent my
38:13
city?" You know what I mean when I went to the LA Leakers a lot of people don't know this that was the same week that
38:19
Sweetie was saying "If he don't buy you a Birkin give him back to the streets." And I was speaking up for Bay Area
38:24
coaches when I was like I never let a woman make me feel less of a man if I don't want to buy a Birkin because we
38:31
come from something to where you going to respect me before you respect my finances my finances is one thing i'mma
38:37
always take care of you my woman you with me you next to me but at the end of the day our relationship shouldn't be
38:42
based off my finances you know what I'm saying based off what we communicate with as each other so I've always tried
38:49
to no matter how lyrical I am whether I'm on Funk Flex or Ebro wherever I'mma
38:55
always stand up for the Bay and what we represent as a culture there you go man had to be you want to jump in here man i'm proud of you thank you i'm just
39:02
proud of you i'm so I'm happy and to hear this growth and to hear what you had to stand on artists just don't know
39:10
sometimes you so excited to be accepted to be loved to finally get off that
39:16
futon to get off that floor to get off that couch and that's what it be Heather
39:22
like you be so happy to be here you don't even see the business that's going on behind your back that's where I was
39:27
going right so you'll have you'll have ANRs that got different deals they doing
39:33
behind the scenes now they putting people they didn't sign on your features when you really needed a bigger feature
39:38
to make this record bigger they putting producers that they got production deals for in the room with you that ain't even
39:45
on the level with you as a rapper because it's cheaper to pay for the beat when I'm asking for top-notch man put me
39:51
with just Blaze put me with them put me with no ID
39:56
put me with them people where I can deliver why y'all got me in the room with little buddy from Cincinnati that's
40:03
did something for NBA Young Boy that's cool but that ain't what I represent you know what I'm saying put me around what
40:09
I represent but it's a whole play going on behind the scenes and I had to get away from you and a lot of times they
40:14
using code they'll tell you that you too old but really you too experience i
40:21
can't get over on you i need you young and dumb i need you ready to sign this paperwork and don't ask no questions
40:27
take this 25,000 take this 50,000 take this 100,000 for the work you already did i'm signing you because I see your
40:34
numbers you did all the ground work now we going to give you some [ __ ] paperwork as a thank you and you happy
40:40
to take it so you know what I mean like you I'm old i'm 30 i'm I'm 25 i'm
40:47
old who you talking to but that is a code you got to be able to read between uh oh this these they starting to know
40:53
too much you asking too many questions now i'mma hurt your spirit you old you get too You sound old and it ain't It
40:59
ain't that you old you classic you know I'm experienced i know my stuff
41:05
i ain't signing that now they want to start playing with you psychologically and spiritually and that's what I I'm so
41:11
proud of you like that's why I challenge I challenge us as a community as a hip-hop community this ain't a a
41:17
ethnicity thing i challenge us as a community to stop writing our OG's off
41:23
stop doing that because when y'all do that y'all y'all allowing the information to dissolve we need our OGs
41:30
to be 50 and rap to be able to give us something to look forward to and give us game when we get that age if we all just
41:37
living as young [ __ ] and out here whing and doing this at what point do we
41:42
grow at what point do you get your credit up at what point do you go buy a house and stop renting at what point do
41:49
you buy a block at what point do you start a business for you and yours to be able to grow so we ain't all out here
41:55
suffering and if we ain't got our OG's from the Jay-Z's to the uh Steve Stouts
42:02
to everybody giving us that information why are we calling them old why are we
42:07
saying things about Killer Mike i don't know who Killer Everybody know who Killer Mike is if you don't know who
42:12
Killer Mike is you ain't hip-hop that's your fault that's your fault so for y'all to be bashing somebody like
42:18
Killer Mike winning a Grammy at his eight that's experience that's growth we should be growing in this thing we the
42:25
only community in music that does that you don't see rock and roll writing they
42:31
OG's off or pop writing they OG's off we the only people that say he too old or
42:36
he too this man he ain't too old he got experience and we need that experience so this young [ __ ] don't go through the
42:41
same thing he went through 20 years ago and if we stop that we stop a lot of things from growing i I remember when I
42:49
was in Africa Vector said something he said "Man," I said "Man you know a lot of black of a black America felt like um
42:56
Africa don't rock with blacks." He said "No." He said "The main thing we be mad about y'all is y'all put the information
43:02
in retirement homes." I said "What you mean?" He said "When y'all grandparents get old y'all send them to retirement
43:08
homes they supposed to be with the babies they give them the information but y'all send them to schools and these
43:14
daycarees with these people who don't give two shits about them you see what I'm saying we got We got
43:20
that same mentality in hip-hop we want to go get with the next person the young dude this and we already got what we
43:26
need right here amongst us let's keep it right here we got sway in the morning come on why we ain't pulling up pull up
43:33
you pulled up today man simba up in here freaky tales in theaters tonight horse holler at you man simba man real talk
43:42
when I first heard you rhyming Yeah i never heard nobody from the Bay ROM like that honestly honestly because you
43:47
didn't have that that extra bay on it like they do at Bay Talk you just was spitting game right
43:53
were you signed to Atlantic when that freestyle came out cuz I thought that when that freestyle came out you were viral it might have
43:59
been a bidding war was there other labels that wanted you besides i was signed before that freestyle came out oh
44:04
you were signed to Atlantic before that i was signed before that that's what a lot of people don't know so I was signed
44:09
and it wasn't announced so a lot of people didn't know a lot of things that was like when I was out
44:16
moving around it was me trying to force the label's hand to push me i call Just
44:22
Incredible nobody set that up i ran into Charlie
44:27
Slaw i got um Wallow booked Tiny Desk through Abby O'Neal wow called me at
44:34
Broccley City Fest and said "Man I had a meeting with your label and I told him they should push you." They said "We
44:40
ain't worried about that." Damn he said "You know what come to Broccoli City Fest we going to show them." Wallow told
44:46
me to come to Broccoli City Fest i flew to Broccoli City Fest on my own dime me
44:52
my cameraman three people who I thought was my friends at the time we all went
44:57
out there i get there Wallow throws me the mic i don't even know what song is about to come on wallow plays big homie
45:04
abby O'Neal who works at NPR at the time hears it and was like "Who is
45:10
this this is Simba he dope he just he not getting the proper push he deserve
45:15
you know what we gonna get him a tiny desk." Abby takes my number abby text me two weeks later hey I'm coming to LA
45:23
i'mma come pick you up i pick Abby up we go to Marina del Rey she telling me "I'm
45:29
just tired of this hip hop i'm tired of this i'm tired i want to see you win i
45:34
want to see you do something you're an example for my child like I want to see something work let's figure it out ab
45:42
two weeks later she called me we got Tiny Dez but the label looking like how
45:48
did he do this and we didn't line this up we ain't supporting this fully like
45:54
that like we we going to help but it's like this was supposed to be something we lined up so it was a lot of things
46:00
that was going on to where we was forcing hands of just hustling relationships now they did pour gas on
46:07
things i'm not going to sit here and act like a guy that act like they didn't do anything shout out to Jason Davis Marsha
46:14
they did a lot of great things for me but it was a lot of misunderstanding of things to where we could have hit the
46:20
target so many times and it was just miscommunication we got Simba here man and and got his
46:27
lovely partner here haley is here um we got Aiden here and Aiden wanted to go to
46:32
school today yeah he did he He didn't necessarily want to be here but he's such a great artist i told him "If I
46:38
give you a pad and some pens can you draw me something?" He drew something haley can we see what he drew aiden can
46:45
you bring us the pad so I can show what you got bud can you show us what you drew come on bring it to daddy man come
46:51
on man come on man my guy man that's your chair right there adorable little guy too man such a cutie got his peac
46:58
coat on and true show what you drew tell me what you drew man hold it up wow he
47:03
drew that oh my goodness wow that's my young artist right there man he drew all
47:08
of those characters tell them what it is baby what what is that nightmare Tales
47:15
what is it nightmare Tales nightmare Tales yo look at this you are We got You
47:20
getting this uh TV you're a real artist okay look at this i'm sorry i got on the wrong It's your fault i know right look
47:28
at this you're a real artist man can you see that wow you're incredible Aiden thank you can you sign this for me can
47:34
you sign your name too give them your autograph you got to put your autograph on it for me is that for me can I take it home okay thank you say I got you
47:40
Sway okay you can drop the S and the W
47:46
heather B they tried to tell us he was autistic really yeah they tried to tell us he was
47:52
autistic cuz he had a real bad um speech delay he had a tongue tie that was latching his tongue to the bottom of his
47:58
mouth so when we use words like T and D you need your tongue to touch touch the top of your mouth he couldn't do it and
48:05
then once we got the surgery he just started going off but they tried to convince us to put him on they tried to
48:11
tell us we didn't have he didn't have a tongue tie and so we had to really advocate for him and go and find
48:17
outsource other you know dentists and surgeons and doctors because nobody
48:22
would listen you know they they want to just put you in a box and on the spectrum and which is great you know we
48:27
have awareness for all that and everything but it's not always the case especially in this community it's so you
48:34
got to advocate for your own kids man it's great that's your advice to parents who looking for those kind of answers follow your mom gut your dad gut like
48:41
you know your child best yes haley you got bars too i see everybody else got
48:46
bars but that was that was even a tough thing you know being at the label and trying
48:52
to write music and at the same time she in speech class with them you know what I mean texting me things they saying and
48:58
I'm trying to come up with the best lyrics I could come up with and do things to get us out of this
49:05
circumference we in and stuff like that so once we got that news that it was a tongue tie and we got it fixed man dude
49:12
start talking bro and it's been a blessing ever since like see what he doing he going to draw the album cover
49:17
too we got a new album on the way we going to talk about that i I love this man we got Simba up here wait can I jump
49:22
in real quick go for it rap i just wanted to say this real quick it made me
49:28
think about when y'all was talking about Simba saying the baby on the island and thi this is a part of the reason I stay
49:34
boots on the ground here with everybody is because I was able to see you and King Tech build what you build and
49:42
people not understanding what you were building only for it to later on birth people like Simba people like Lar
49:48
Russell this is what what what you guys did was considered going against the grain at the time and it turned out to
49:56
be a lovely thing because people grew up knowing that they could be real MC's from where we from that they didn't have
50:02
to be pigeonholed into a certain style and so from that movement this is what we got i just think it's a beautiful
50:08
thing man wow man thank you Rap and I don't I don't talk about the Sway and
50:14
Tech story a lot you know as much as I probably should and I will start talking about it but you know ain't nobody more
50:21
Oakland than me man we know that we know that everybody ra makes sure everybody
50:27
know that this is Oakland from the hospital to the
50:33
to the high school you know what I mean to the college and and and to the family
50:38
but I like you that's why I'm fascinated even with Rav people don't know Rav got barreds rav was a rapper first and I
50:46
used to I grew up as a savage yeah half of Grammy Records you know
50:51
what I mean cousin and we used to try I used to try to push rap put more music out what we doing but he he had the
50:58
wherewithal like you I started as an MC we all had to do something different
51:04
right and create our own spheres our own ecosystems you made more money at one
51:10
point outside of rap than you did in rap y% right I made more money in other
51:16
spaces than I've ever made in rap and here we are right I literally just talked about that on um bars with rab
51:22
and brownie i said "I made a million dollars last year without dropping any music." Yeah brand deals you know what I
51:28
mean understanding partnerships understanding like quit finessing your partner for taking these people for
51:35
these monies and not delivering your deliverables you know what I mean and you you you got them feeling crazy
51:40
because they came to you for a partnership they came to you to bring people to these platforms so any
51:46
innovative way we could figure that out me and Rab just recently did some Allstar weekend with Monster Energy they
51:51
was like "We want to do something that's a part of the culture." I called Rab I called Shell Hart i'm like "Yo what's something we could put together?" Rav
51:58
tell me "Well Shell already got something going on a bowling night you know what let's make Monster a part of
52:03
that we don't even need to Yeah do a separate event shell already got it let's do that." And it's about us coming
52:09
together as a culture yeah and I love that about And you guys are taking this baton and now we all still here right we
52:16
all stay here and we going to stay here tracy I know you in New York did you want to chime in before I I mean of
52:21
course of course of course i've been boopping my head up and down i look like I should be on a dashboard of a car
52:27
because of how much I'm just really feeling everything that you're you're saying Simba from you know the warnings
52:35
of outsourcing your intuition you know and how that can steer you away from your own self-awareness and also how
52:42
some folks can use your gratitude against you with all of that adversity and I'm so happy you're in the clear in
52:50
so many ways did it injure your trust in others
52:56
definitely i lost a lot of friends a lot of friends um it it made
53:02
me look at things like man people will really take the 20% of a
53:08
narrative of you and ignore the other 80 right so it's like let's say I play
53:13
basketball and let's say I go shoot 10 shots in a row and I make eight of them
53:19
somebody might be like SSA shoot better than Steph Curry they just might only pay attention to that one part they
53:25
don't pay attention to I probably shot a thousand shots before that just to hit them eight and Steph Curry do this in
53:32
his sleep you know what I'm saying so people will take a narrative and they'll spin it on you and then like it'll it'll
53:39
really mess with your confidence because it's a public thing like I remember when I did the Eminem thing right i went
53:46
viral for saying I rap better than Eminem people didn't see the context behind that right i'm literally being
53:52
pressed by people in the crowd saying "I don't know none of your verses i don't know who you are i don't." So I'm like
53:57
"Well rap me a Eminem verse." But they only posted that one part so it looked
54:03
like I was taking shots at Eminem you weren't taking shots and I wasn't taking shots i really admire Eminem you know
54:09
what I'm saying but some people took it that way and because they took it that way it allowed the internet to think I
54:14
don't rock with Eminem when I actually study Eminem right reggie Jay-Z Tupac
54:20
and Biggie Andre from Outcast Jada Corrupt Nas and Demi but in this industry I'm a cause of a lot of envy so
54:27
when I'm not put on this list this [ __ ] does not offend me that's somebody I studied that's a great I would never
54:33
disrespect him but it got taken the wrong way and I understood that and by understood understanding that it allowed
54:40
me to understand where to place myself and how not to put myself in vulnerable position positions for somebody to take
54:46
advantage of my ignorance in that moment man I love this big round of applause for Simba the new movie is out today go
54:54
to theaters freaky tales he's a star we got Haley we got Aiden right here he's a
54:59
star too hey hey Aiden do you rap too you do rap yeah go talk on that mic talk

55:32

55:37
worth a lot i cut her off she want me bad enough i figured out why I was broke i wasn't mad enough my pockets had me
55:43
looking skinny now I'm fat as [ __ ] they turn on me you my brother that was tragic but I be dumb to take on other
55:49
[ __ ] habits i just make it happen i pull up and get active fast i am attractive when I hit that gas I spaz
55:55
and get to rapping when this [ __ ] turn up they going to depend on me when I wasn't eating they ain't ask if I was
56:01
hungry wish I had receipts to show these [ __ ] what they owe me before I go back broke i swear to God that I be
56:07
lonely hey yeah I'm lonely throw your LS up
56:12
with me sway yeah I swear that I be lonely yeah
56:18
swear that I be lonely yeah swear that I be lonely
56:23
yeah okay let me talk to him i tell him it ain't that hard to cut you off i do that all the time the hardest thing I
56:30
ever had to do is control my mind these [ __ ] think cuz I'm a rapper i won't up the I just ain't into shooting [ __ ] up
56:36
or killing mine and why the [ __ ] do black folks got to sit around and wait until a [ __ ] rap good to come and gun
56:41
him down it's more to the world than this hood that hood most [ __ ] don't know cuz they ain't cross county lines i
56:47
turned 30 last year i ain't got lots of time the rap game don't show no love until somebody dying we can't retain
56:53
information if it ain't rap to us we sell our soul to white folks who sell it back to us my cousin got a 100 pounds
56:58
he's about to board the plane i told him tempt the TSA they let you do your thing i know he don't want to do it but he got
57:03
to do it till something change when he was trapping I was rapping and we ain't complain i miss them [ __ ] I was with
57:08
when I jumped in the game but everybody ain't going to make it do fortune and fame i told my story this road got slow
57:14
leagues before I go back broke i swear to God that I be lonely
57:20
hey I'm lonely yeah hi yeah say it with me sweat
