Hip-Hop Evolution: Shawn Riley aka Cornbread's 'Natural Intelligence' Journey 🌿 | SWAY'S UNIVERSE

0:00
all right man there you go corn bread
0:03
what an awesome clip wow that was from a
0:06
live performance well done well done man
0:09
and now listen this is these is one of
0:11
those rare moments have the be where our
0:13
next guest u means more to me um than
0:16
just the music that they put out and the
0:18
movement that they created through the
0:20
music through the culture but I love
0:21
this particular person because the
0:23
messaging has been consistent since the
0:25
90s he's always been an artist who
0:27
wanted to uplift inform feed people with
0:31
um his words um Enlightenment you know
0:34
um gems um his perspective and ways that
0:37
he has utilize his knowledge to improve
0:40
his life which I got a chance to see him
0:42
evolve from a teenage Heather be I met
0:45
him and his family back in the 90s and
0:48
um his family warmly received me and
0:50
allowed me into their home so this is in
0:52
the bay this is in the bay they used to
0:54
live in um Vacaville right Vacaville
0:58
California his beautiful um sister is
1:01
one of the first people I ever got into
1:03
a serious relationship with and this is
1:05
how I met him okay you know and from
1:07
there we all became family and it was at
1:10
a time when the wakeup show uh was on
1:13
the rise as well we're talking early 90s
1:16
and so he had an opportunity to witness
1:19
the the rise of the wakeup show and as
1:22
king Tech and I at that time the other
1:24
crew members that was a part of the
1:25
wakeup Show created this platform that
1:28
gave a lot of exposure to dependent
1:30
artist you know and it was a type of
1:31
artist that we focused on first song we
1:33
ever played was live at the barbecue by
1:36
Nas okay we had Jay-Z all these
1:39
different artists wuang Clan who were
1:41
proving themselves at that time this was
1:43
the platform to go on to since then that
1:46
show grown and he has grown and um he
1:49
has become a father you know he has a
1:51
whole tribe to himself that he has been
1:54
raising as a single father he's
1:56
incredible human being I watched him
1:59
work his his ass off to create his own
2:02
platforms to make sure that he pursued
2:03
his own dreams and in 2024 he got new
2:06
music that he's putting out right now um
2:09
he got a new album called natural
2:10
intelligence yes right and uh we're
2:13
going to be talking with him right now
2:16
we talked about him a little bit when Mt
2:18
lib came up here right and we talked
2:20
about his early Beginnings because Ono
2:23
his brother and and this man cornbread
2:25
and all of these guys were member of a
2:27
group called CI wild right and now
2:30
stepping out on hiso he has been doing
2:32
this for a while please welcome
2:34
cornbread AKA Shan
2:36
Riley welcome welcome welcome sound like
2:40
it's overdue it is it is man I I owe him
2:44
for all the meals his family gave me
2:46
when I was young y you just have been
2:47
consistent like you have really just
2:49
been taking a fork across the country
2:51
and just eating everywhere you go yo I
2:53
really was though right you remember
2:55
them days I remember them days yep you
2:57
were a younger man you were like a te
2:59
teenager you were a young young guy 17
3:02
17 17 years a of age right what do you
3:05
recall about that time when this
3:06
stranger came into your home
3:10
preloaded no it was that man it was a
3:13
good time back then because man we was
3:15
freestyling all the time it was just
3:17
hip-hop was just man it still is
3:20
everyday thing but back then it was just
3:22
that energy was was alive and well yeah
3:24
man and then you had access to the radio
3:26
show and and so in with the artist what
3:29
how did stuff influence you because we
3:31
were just working I'm like come on and I
3:33
don't even remember how I was was I mean
3:35
no no no okay
3:39
greedy you know what though man thinking
3:41
back man it was like I always wanted to
3:44
show you that you know what I'm saying I
3:45
was really true to this culture you know
3:48
what I mean I wasn't just trying to to
3:49
ride your coattails or anything like
3:51
that so I didn't want to kind of be
3:53
around you like that but I wanted to
3:54
show you that what we was doing was was
3:56
authentic yeah and it was and and and
3:59
and you know it's authentic because
4:01
you're still doing it yeah it it wasn't
4:03
a farce it wasn't an act right it's in
4:06
me not on me it's in me not on me who
4:09
what's some of the moments you remember
4:11
from that time that kept you inspired to
4:13
this
4:14
time going to the wake up show okay uh
4:17
do do you remember any particular
4:19
episodes that you kind that you got to
4:21
witness um not off hand but just that
4:25
time in general yeah because after we
4:27
would go to the wakeup show or do stuff
4:29
like that that you know Cali wild me and
4:31
Jay we go back writing freestyling all
4:34
day all night and then we just started
4:37
putting music together real music yeah
4:39
with Ono with Ono yeah which is mad
4:42
Liv's little brother yeah man and then
4:44
what did mad Liv used to say to y'all
4:45
back there uh he was I didn't really
4:47
talk to him that much he's recluse I
4:49
guess you could say yeah yeah I see him
4:52
every now and again but it was like oh
4:53
yeah yeah yeah he was like that then man
4:57
that dude was consistent so yeah I
4:58
mainly was was me oh no J Duce we was
5:01
just making music just all the time I
5:04
would fly from Oakland to oxnar stay the
5:07
weekend do like 12 Songs flyback you
5:11
know what I'm saying stuff like that so
5:13
we got like thousands of thousands of
5:15
albums wow man and he was doing this on
5:17
his own did you ever get um you stay
5:20
motivated man and I look at a lot of the
5:21
work you done we just played a song
5:23
featuring sadot X and Lord Jamal from
5:25
Brand Nubian these were Your Heroes
5:27
growing up yeah yeah of Applause for
5:30
that man enough respect to how did that
5:33
happen this is co that album is the
5:36
birth of Fresh album that did that
5:37
during Co okay and that's how I met my
5:39
brother ER seven okay but during Co I
5:42
was just I was gathering beats making
5:44
songs and just hitting people up M and
5:47
see if they wanted to work and those
5:48
Brothers was down to work they were down
5:51
to work I'm curious for you because in
5:53
that song you talk about um you say
5:55
something like my
5:57
light is still
6:00
my light is still bright even though I
6:02
have people attacking me left and right
6:04
you say something like that in that that
6:06
lyric oh yeah that was who were
6:09
attacking you I ain't even G to say I
6:11
was just going through it you know just
6:14
some some grown ass stuff just going
6:15
through some stuff you know yeah that
6:17
was around the time of my divorce and
6:19
all that I was married for about 15
6:21
years so okay okay so yeah yeah I don't
6:24
even want to get into that but it was
6:25
that stuff it was that stuff but but
6:27
it's interesting how that stuff yeah you
6:29
needed to write about it though it had
6:31
to come out in some type of way or form
6:33
and and that's good you know um any way
6:36
an artist can express themselves in a
6:38
positive way I mean he didn't go deep
6:40
deep deep into it but you got to touch
6:42
on it it definitely has to affect you as
6:44
an artist and as a person as well after
6:47
15 years I'm always curious that that
6:50
long with someone how do people decide
6:53
divorce you know after 15 years with
6:55
somebody but I'm glad you found a way to
6:57
put it in your music yeah and there's a
6:59
song on that album the breath of fresh a
7:01
album called what love is so if you
7:03
listen to that that pretty much explains
7:05
what I was dealing with well what is
7:07
love to you I don't
7:09
know you know
7:11
what he said look even after 15 years
7:14
I'm still trying to figure it out I'm
7:16
figuring it out you know yeah I I don't
7:20
know love I think you see it in the face
7:22
of those beautiful kids you got
7:25
absolutely there it is that how many
7:27
children you got now man four four
7:29
beautiful kids man they ain't little no
7:31
more they eat how how old are they now
7:33
got a 21 year old 18 yeah 16 and 13 so
7:39
everybody eating they like you sway when
7:41
you was coming around they eating yeah
7:43
hungry just like you the
7:48
really yo let me talk shout out to the
7:50
Riley family Mrs Riley Mr Riley they fed
7:55
me for years yo that's what is that
7:57
seven Up cake or what is it that oh yeah
8:00
yeah Seven Up cake wow oh man I don't
8:02
remember what you bring me your appetite
8:05
they used to enjoy me over there you
8:06
think your parents enjoy me bro all the
8:08
time man they to this day I'm friends
8:10
I'm talk to his parents more I talk to
8:12
him wow you could have been a
8:15
son-in-law my way I was on my way yeah I
8:19
was almost there Heather but you know
8:20
young Swiggity all right we going to go
8:22
into
8:23
that y just alike bring
8:27
it so so now it's 2024 right yes um you
8:32
you you put out a lot of music I got a
8:34
chance to watch you open up for some of
8:36
the biggest acts in Hip Hop man speak
8:38
about that bro that was a blessing I
8:39
opened up for ks1 uh Co
8:43
rap yeah oh yeah urge was with me yeah
8:47
yeah yeah with the last one we did was
8:49
Slick Rick you opened up for Slick Rick
8:51
Slick Rick do you get a chance to talk
8:53
with them at all did anybody leave you
8:54
with a gym sometimes I open up for
8:56
rockim too okay wow and I spoke to
8:58
rockim I even showed him what I was
9:01
doing I still got to get at him and give
9:03
him one
9:04
too but yeah that one he you know we
9:07
briefly talked yeah but that one that
9:10
one right there him and krs1 was the
9:12
ones that that what did Chris say to you
9:14
you know Heather that's Heather come
9:15
from you know the edutainment album I
9:18
remember you on that edutainment I used
9:20
to listen to that album all the time
9:23
that ain't he urge that ain't he thank
9:27
you respect dude yeah but uh I recorded
9:31
what he said he he gave a message to my
9:33
daughters actually what did he say
9:34
telling them to don't worry about
9:38
looking outside of yourself he was
9:40
telling them to to pay attention to who
9:42
they are and just continue to shine
9:44
bright as an individual don't worry
9:46
about chasing this that and the other
9:48
just do what you got to do and you're
9:49
going to you know manifest what you need
9:51
to manifest along those lines that's
9:54
interesting because early this morning
9:56
sway torch and I were having a
9:58
conversation about the father and
9:59
daughter Dynamic you know and how
10:02
important that it is sway was like you
10:04
know I don't think people realize how
10:08
girls need their fathers women need
10:10
their fathers but as an artist yourself
10:13
how do you kind of Juggle all of that
10:15
because you do have shows you do have to
10:17
spend time writing I'm not sure if you
10:19
do a job you know quote unquote N9 to5
10:22
um in the midst of all that how do you
10:25
parent in the midst of that as well even
10:27
though they they're young teenagers and
10:29
young adults now um I just I just make
10:32
it happen cuz I'm actually a
10:34
construction work in a welder so I do
10:37
that I do music and I'm there with them
10:40
so I try to incorporate them in the
10:42
things that I do I take them to shows
10:45
and I like to just give them their
10:47
specific time cuz during that whole
10:49
situation that I went through that's
10:51
when I really learn how to to listen to
10:54
women they keep stressing listen I don't
10:56
need you to solve everything just listen
10:59
MH so I learned that and that's what I
11:01
do with my daughters I just listen to
11:02
them let them cry on my shoulder take
11:05
them where they want to take them I mean
11:07
you know what I'm saying just yeah I'm
11:09
just there that's all I can say I'm just
11:11
there I like that too John T you agree
11:13
with that that men should just learn how
11:15
to listen to women definitely yeah okay
11:18
way to way to put
11:20
in no it might I add vice versa it's a
11:23
two-way street right we have to listen
11:25
to men as well I mean you guys have that
11:27
was part of the conversation this
11:29
morning this is true listening right
11:31
yeah uh some of my strongest DEC best
11:33
decisions I made in relationships not
11:35
just intimate ones professional so on
11:38
and so forth we get people think we get
11:40
paid to talk but when you become a
11:43
master of it you're really getting paid
11:45
to listen amen right you know and
11:48
sometimes that what you don't say is
11:49
more powerful than what you're trying to
11:51
say yeah right what are you trying to
11:53
say now when you say natural
11:56
intelligence what is the difference
11:57
between is it is that a knock on AI no
12:01
no well kind of yeah okay all right kind
12:05
of cuz back in the 90s you remember this
12:08
I was on my spiritual enlightenment
12:11
thing you know how everybody's all wok
12:13
and stuff nowadays well I was going
12:14
through that and what 93 94 94 he showed
12:18
up at me and King Tech house okay he he
12:21
you brought it up I wasn't going to
12:22
bring it up man he was on a spiritual
12:25
journey cornbread was on a spiritual
12:27
Jour kind of like what buddy was talking
12:28
about bu what buddy was talking about in
12:32
his spiritual journey he decided that he
12:35
didn't need to eat solid foods he was
12:38
going to live off the sun rays and water
12:40
alone so he came to our
12:44
house and for like seven days he's at ke
12:47
Tech in my house and every day Tech get
12:49
hey dude is he okay are we going to have
12:51
to call our ambulance I was like n let
12:54
him go through it you know what though I
12:57
felt so alive during that time you said
13:00
this I felt so I could everything was
13:03
clear it was like I had foresight Beyond
13:07
foresight which brings me to this I I
13:10
looked at artificial intelligence is
13:13
fake intelligence so natural
13:15
intelligence is real intelligence it's
13:17
what we all have within us anyway so
13:20
everything that the computers are doing
13:22
and this artificial stuff is doing is
13:24
what we naturally can do we just haven't
13:27
been we just haven't been utilizing our
13:30
brains because we're looking outside of
13:32
oursel all the time but once we stop and
13:34
look
13:35
within it's so much that we can can
13:38
develop mentally and I think that's what
13:41
it's all about you know what I mean yeah
13:44
yeah a lot coming together mentally
13:46
being on one common
13:48
cord so what do you think I want to get
13:51
back to the fainting because I don't
13:52
know if you fainted or not when you was
13:54
that way in the M saw this dude man it
13:57
was how many days without I can't
14:00
remember I
14:01
do I remember because Sean cornbread is
14:05
like my little brother I'm just total
14:06
transparency I might I think I'm hard on
14:09
him like a big brother I have been but
14:10
now we're grown ass
14:12
men could joke about it like he's like a
14:14
big brother to me now so it just water
14:16
and Sun water and Sun I didn't I didn't
14:19
trust nothing he didn't eat nothing I
14:21
didn't I didn't trust for how many days
14:23
I recall about
14:25
seven and by the fourth one Adrian this
14:28
is at the the the tarzanna house he's at
14:30
the Tarzan house eating
14:33
sunrays like I felt good Yogi when did
14:36
you crack like when did you just say I
14:38
need a a peanut butter and jelly
14:40
sandwich something I mean let's let's
14:43
keep it on
14:45
Buck you had the crack I mean I would I
14:48
was into juicing back then got it yeah
14:51
so I you know drink the celery juices
14:53
and all that type of stuff but it wasn't
14:55
until I became a construction worker
14:57
that I was like all right I need to God
14:59
you need some strength on you I need to
15:01
eat yeah them jackhammers weigh what 110
15:03
PBS yeah so I had to put that muscle
15:06
back he see his guns now that that ain't
15:09
from
15:10
Sunray n lot of meat in that body one
15:13
thing I realized at that point too in my
15:15
life you could be spiritual but you
15:18
could take things too far I didn't want
15:20
to I was becoming a spirit you know you
15:22
see what I'm saying yeah so everything
15:24
is a balance so now my life is balance
15:26
yeah yeah yeah yeah all right cool man
15:28
we going come back we got cornbread is
15:30
here the new album is natural
15:31
intelligence tell me about this coin you
15:34
have right so cool all right I make
15:35
these myself
15:37
right I was hold them up while you talk
15:39
so you got a camera on you you know all
15:41
right so you know you know you hear
15:43
about people in their complains about
15:46
Spotify and all this stuff taking
15:47
people's monies and whatnot I don't want
15:49
to complain so I'm like all right
15:51
whatever if if that's what's happening
15:52
we need to bring it back to like I
15:54
remember the '90s we were selling CDs
15:56
and stuff like that this generation
15:59
doesn't have that experience but
16:00
everybody's on their phone doing this
16:02
mhm so I wanted to give people the the
16:04
experience we had of going hand in hand
16:06
but you can still scan it and do the
16:09
technology so it's old school and new
16:11
school together it's a hybrid right and
16:14
so the only but the only place people
16:16
could get your album is how on the coin
16:19
it's it's not online it's not none of
16:20
that it's it's private so once you scan
16:23
it it's a private site just for you so
16:26
people have to be you have to hand them
16:28
the coin or they could go to your
16:29
website yeah you go to Instagram right
16:31
now which is cornbread of calii wild

17:25
spirit is at um follow him at cornbread

listening to cornbread man and it's like
17:55
it's actually so refreshing to hear a
17:58
popular
17:59
hip hop artists talk about spirituality
18:01
because it it it feels and I'm a white
18:03
man too so I'm just goe say it feels
18:05
like the black majority of males are
18:08
uncomfortable talking about that but
18:09
this shit's fitting bars man I'm
18:11
listening this I'm like what in the [ __ ]
18:12
am I listening to he's talking about
18:14
cameras out of the eyes it's so true
18:16
this man if if youve listen to One Thing
18:18
from some random person in your entire
18:20
life listen to this go read and listen
18:22
to alen Watts my friend cornbread oh
18:25
yeah everything that we've ever created
18:27
is a product of our body product of our
18:29
mind our spirit our soul and I just
18:30
thank for capitalizing that in the song
18:32
man wow was fired
18:35
up you touch Tyler right there boy all
18:38
right hey Tyler thank you for that make
18:40
make sure you support him you're a super
18:41
citizen brother Alan
18:43
Allan Allan Watts yeah Allan the English
18:47
writer oh yeah that's him Al watt
18:50
English writer philosopher man but he he
18:52
was on a spiritual request for a long
18:53
time too thank you brother we appreciate
18:55
you Tyler what did you mean by the
18:57
cameras the the eyes or the cameras and
19:00
what what kind of things can you
19:01
Enlighten us on that people not thinking
19:03
about that's right there in front of us
19:05
well like he was saying it's a
19:06
reflection all this artificial stuff is
19:08
a reflection of the human body so the
19:11
computer your brain is a computer that's
19:14
an artificial brain your eyes you know
19:18
cameras on your phone is artificial eyes
19:22
we also have a you know the third eye
19:24
mhm that has rods and cones in it just
19:26
like your eyes you know
19:29
and so on and so forth our cars are
19:33
likeand y speak on it man I don't know
19:36
what I'm
19:37
saying yeah those but see those are the
19:39
things that we need to pay attention to
19:41
to to help evolve us as a people and it
19:45
doesn't even matter if you're black or
19:46
white you was you were walking
19:48
barefooted back then too yeah cuz I mean
19:52
to stay in touch with the Earth to stay
19:54
grounded yeah that's real I'm rocking
19:56
copper right now you know what I'm
19:58
saying copper does I mean it's got so
20:01
many different beautiful healing things
20:03
look it up I don't want to be putting it
20:04
out there look up for yourself you
20:06
scared
20:07
huh you got a drill job for kids I get
20:11
it you can speak on it man it's factual
20:14
you didn't write this stuff up you
20:15
didn't make this up yeah no it's a
20:17
reason why you wear copper yeah I mean
20:20
and all this stuff is to enhance us as a
20:21
people yes knowledge information mhm
20:24
copper has healing properties to it
20:28
there you go you could look that up
20:30
right I love it man now you keep
20:32
mentioning your brother over here what's
20:33
it urge urge seven urge seven is a
20:36
compant legend you know I you you come
20:40
across people who you know they like
20:41
rapping all but there's certain people
20:44
that you know you know what I'm saying
20:45
and like I've been doing this for a long
20:47
time this brother been doing it for a
20:49
long time well when I met urge earlier
20:52
he mention urge go ahead have a seat man
20:54
we need you to have a seat brother you
20:55
don't have to put nothing up just just
20:56
come have a seat brother so get in front
20:57
of that mic man um and he mentioned that
21:00
he he he he came up listening to the
21:02
world famous wakeup show when we was on
21:03
92.3 to beat right and used to hear all
21:06
them fire ass ciphers that used to
21:08
happen every weekend all them banging
21:10
ass artists that used to come up there
21:12
and you know he was giving everybody
21:13
opportunity incredible incredible and
21:16
it's it's a dream come true just to be
21:17
sitting in this chair across from you
21:19
dog I can't even believe it like if if I
21:20
was asleep and somebody woke me up I
21:22
would beat they I'd be like bro why you
21:24
I was justu what you doing like crazy
21:27
like if it was a I wouldn't even I
21:29
wouldn't want to wake up but like no man
21:31
yeah I've been down from the start man
21:32
Compton vet you know grew up in the same
21:34
neighborhood you know um in the same
21:37
apartment building Jima village where
21:38
Dre and then was and used to go to Skate
21:41
Land and I watched cube when he was in
21:43
the group CIA you know when he was just
21:45
a dancer you know and uh battle cat and
21:48
the guys was back there all of that man
21:50
and it was funny because DJ po come on
21:52
man come on vets I went to school in a
21:56
in a [ __ ] neighborhood okay and then and
21:58
then uh when I graduated my mom she
22:00
couldn't come do the paperwork stuff
22:02
single parent so they just shipped my
22:04
records like straight up Elsa gundo from
22:06
Willer Brook Junior High to Centennial
22:08
Junior High now I'm at all blood school
22:10
okay so it's like Skate Land is in the
22:12
neighborhood you know a lot of [ __ ]
22:15
couldn't go up there because it's a
22:16
blood area so like I got a chance to
22:18
just see you know a lot of the people
22:19
that a lot of the groups that came to
22:21
Skate Land early on you know because I
22:23
went to Centennial I didn't I wasn't
22:25
necessarily a [ __ ] or a blood but people
22:27
knew me from a [ __ ] area but now was in
22:28
the blood area yeah but it was like I
22:30
was able to still go to Skate Land Doos
22:33
Eve after dark and see these people when
22:35
they were like so you saw Ice Cube
22:38
before NWA man with a curl dancing on
22:41
stage people would not have believed it
22:42
like really dancing on stage at skatel
22:45
land you know and and uh when uh when
22:47
Beasty Boys dropped their joint and CIA
22:50
dropped their joint Compton in effect
22:52
dropped their joint it was kind of based
22:53
on the same type of you know rap style
22:55
and all of that but this was just
22:56
records Out of Compton I I it's a lot of
22:58
history man I pressed up my my albums at
23:01
the same place where e e did you know in
23:03
Elsa gundo with Bill Smith before he
23:05
closed it's just like crazy I used to go
23:06
down there to pick up our vinyl and we
23:08
used to see nwa's vinyl like and see
23:10
people ruthless and it was just like
23:12
slot of History man so to be sitting
23:14
right here and to come this far KDAY and
23:16
power and to see everything how
23:17
everything went with his hip hop p didy
23:19
on the plane this is bananas there you
23:21
go man get that man a round of appla
23:23
he's living the dream he said don't wake
23:25
him up please please don't if I'm
23:28
sleeping let me sleep you awake this is
23:31
what you manifested this for sure for
23:33
sure you manifested it's crazy how we
23:36
don't think of that though in our lives
23:37
man when we when you put something out
23:39
into the universe especially when you
23:40
speak it believe it it's going to come
23:42
back like a it's going to come back like
23:43
a boomerang and write it down and look
23:46
in the mirror and say it to yourself in
23:48
your own face you do you have you have
23:50
to tell yourself you have to tell
23:51
yourself you have to hear yourself said
23:52

23:55

24:30

24:32

24:36
you you don't think you know you don't
24:38

24:39
