there it is man that's the voice of the
0:02
honey jones good friend of ours friend
0:04
of the show what a timely series brother
0:07
what a very timely series um beyond the
0:11
barriers and
0:12
you know as a
0:14
as an athlete so honey
0:16
um
0:18
hello
0:19
hello
0:21
pertaining to dahani or you
0:24
what happened
0:26
as a pastor former athlete well anytime
0:28
i refer
0:35
you know you know what you know what i
0:37
just did a 104 mile race in steamboat
0:41
springs colorado at 6 500 feet of
0:45
elevation going all the way up to 95 100
0:48
feet of elevation and it took me eight
0:50
hours it took me eight hours and it was
0:52
over gravel on a bike so i'm a current
0:55
athlete i'm just a former nfl player
0:58
okay yeah man and you know what and i
1:00
think she was really talking about me
1:01
the honey honey i was talking about sway
1:05
because he said
1:07
you know
1:08
yeah man i got up this morning i did 25
1:11
push-ups
1:13
give me a round of applause dammit
1:17
yeah you you really competing with those
1:19
eight hours
1:19
[Applause]
1:20
[Laughter]
1:22
but
1:24
okay well you know i'm moving i'm moving
1:26
to honey but i just thought this was so
1:30
such a timely series because we kind of
1:32
don't know what goes on behind the
1:33
curtain especially with professional
1:35
athletes we only see what we see on tv
1:37
or what we see in the finals uh
1:39
typically i'm thinking track and field
1:41
or
1:41
um or when we watch football players on
1:43
sunday or monday or whatever it is we
1:46
watch but we don't see everything that
1:47
goes on
1:48
um every single day we don't know what
1:51
went on behind the curtain you know in
1:54
their journey to get them to where they
1:55
are right now i see athletes under
1:58
attack for some reason and um i'm an
2:00
advocate for professional athletes you
2:02
know i thought that uh naomi
2:04
osako um excuse me osaka and simone
2:07
biles they really shifted the
2:08
conversation and mental health and by
2:11
doing so they gave other athletes the
2:12
permission to probably prioritize their
2:15
mental health and go against society
2:17
norms whatever these external
2:19
you know demands were expectations were
2:22
they defied all of that you know and
2:24
they got ridiculed for it they got
2:26
backlash for it they got punished for it
2:28
people were like well you're a
2:29
professional athlete you're supposed to
2:31
just go out there and do
2:33
you know um what were your thoughts on
2:35
that when you saw and that's a barrier
2:36
in itself too especially for black women
2:39
and female athletes how public
2:41
perception is
2:43
yeah well i i mean i would say number
2:45
one you know mental health is a real uh
2:47
it's a real issue um and i think we're
2:49
still in the midst of understanding
2:52
what that really means
2:54
both
2:55
from a mental and a physical side i can
2:57
only speak from my experience you know
3:00
there's plenty times on fourth and one
3:02
where you know you're on the goal line
3:05
and you you're having to talk to
3:07
yourself right and there's plenty of
3:09
times after after a game when you feel
3:11
as though you have to lift yourself up
3:14
and i think you know the great thing
3:16
about team sports is that you do have
3:18
the community of people that surround
3:20
you that are always protecting you and
3:23
that are always sort of in your corner
3:25
and i think on individual sports it's
3:28
much more it's much more difficult
3:30
but there is still a group of people
3:32
that are aligned around you but a lot of
3:34
times it's your coach that's your your
3:35
trainer um that might be your manager
3:38
but when you have other people on the
3:39
team you have other people to sort of
3:41
sit down and kind of talk with but these
3:43
these are important discussions
3:45
that everybody now is having i think
3:47
it's wonderful that we're having this
3:49
this talk because you have to be able to
3:50
put things out there and you know
3:52
everybody's talking to you know their
3:55
friends and their friends friends
3:56
they're talking to their friends friends
3:57
and their kids you know you know you're
3:59
you're seeing this discussion come to
4:01
the front because in the end what we all
4:03
want people to do is live a healthier
4:06
more fulfilled
4:08
life um and that and it just takes uh it
4:11
takes lessons learned and it takes
4:12
people in community to be able to lift
4:14
you up
4:16
absolutely it takes you know you got to
4:18
surround yourself with the right tribe
4:20
you know what i mean
4:21
um and people who are on that same
4:24
frequency this this series beyond the
4:26
barriers made me think about your
4:28
journey and what barriers you must have
4:30
faced
4:31
coming up you know in your pursuit of
4:33
playing pro football man can you share
4:35
some of the hardest barriers that you
4:37
had to get over
4:40
oh you know it's uh
4:43
you know i i think one of the one of the
4:45
greatest uh barriers that i face and i
4:48
think you know most athletes faces is
4:50
ultimately yourself i hate to be cliche
4:52
but you know you wake up and you sit
4:54
there yourself in the mirror and you
4:56
have to decide you know how hard you
4:58
want to pursue your goal
5:00
and it doesn't matter if you're playing
5:02
football basketball baseball you know
5:04
the primary you know big sports or if
5:06
you know if you want to be a formula one
5:07
driver or you know if you want to be an
5:09
endurance athlete you know if you want
5:11
to get on a bike and i said ride 104
5:14
miles over gravel terrain or you know
5:17
whether you want to be a runner or you
5:18
know my sister she's a she's an iron
5:20
iron man athlete these are all
5:23
challenging circumstances that you put
5:25
yourself through and the biggest biggest
5:27
barriers yourself now
5:29
obviously in the sport
5:31
there are other barriers that come into
5:32
it you know especially in endurance
5:34
where it's
5:35
um you know time family safety you know
5:40
when you're playing football you're on a
5:41
field and so you're in a controlled
5:42
environment with the rest of the team
5:44
and people who look like you they know
5:46
that you're playing the game but if
5:47
you're a black runner that's at nine
5:50
o'clock at night running through an in
5:52
an all-white neighborhood or a place
5:53
where you're not familiar there's a lot
5:55
of other things that kind of come into
5:57
your mind that give you anxiety about
5:59
your circumstance same thing as a
6:01
cyclist you know
6:03
four hours in the in the morning going
6:05
through neighborhoods and communities
6:07
where you may or may not know people
6:09
these are barriers that unfortunately
6:11
prevent other people from being able to
6:13
participate in the sport
6:16
wow you don't even think about that sort
6:18
of stuff right
6:19
right right
6:21
um the honey jones is here we're talking
6:23
about beyond the barriers some of the
6:25
athletes you interviewed
6:27
they mentioned that safety um was a big
6:30
concern
6:31
and then they also mentioned race
6:34
you know like not not not
6:36
you know competitive but ethnicity race
6:38
relations you know uh racial
6:41
inequities uh what did they mean by that
6:44
can you can you dig deeper into
6:47
well that i you know this is you know
6:49
gatorade and endurance did this survey
6:52
and
6:53
they they really put it out to
6:55
differing communities and people because
6:57
this is based upon this whole you know
6:59
you know the barrier actually evolved
7:02
from an initial show that i do with them
7:04
called some you know someone like me um
7:06
which is talking about how do you get
7:08
endurance athletes to participate in the
7:09
sports and especially minority
7:11
communities where they don't see people
7:13
look like you you know that's the one
7:15
part where if you if you see someone
7:17
looks like you you feel acceptance if
7:18
you don't see anybody then you're just
7:20
wondering am i actually supposed to be
7:22
here right and so that's how it started
7:24
and then we started diving a little bit
7:26
deeper with gatorade endurance to see
7:27
okay what were those over those barriers
7:30
you know safety you mentioned is like
7:32
one of the biggest ones and i kind of
7:34
alluded to it before but it's a real
7:36
situation i mean i have a friend that
7:38
was in in detroit michigan he's actually
7:41
um
7:42
running through one of the neighborhoods
7:44
and he got he got stopped by the cops
7:46
because he was running
7:48
and
7:49
he's not allowed to be black
7:51
and run now when i go out and run i make
7:54
sure that i'm in full tennis ball yellow
7:57
i make sure i got all the lights and all
7:59
the reflections on me anything you know
8:01
i i'd like to be running with the bell
8:03
so i can shake it so i can let everybody
8:05
know hey i'm out here running right
8:07
safety's a big issue but being black
8:10
while running being black while cycling
8:13
being trans while cycling and running
8:16
you know those are all challenges that
8:18
the lgbtq plus community faces just as
8:21
much as the african-american community
8:23
faces just like female space i mean
8:25
there are so many different things that
8:27
people look at and say you know what i'd
8:29
rather spend my time elsewhere and by
8:31
the way time is another issue that
8:33
people face as barriers when they try to
8:36
get into endurance sports and other
8:37
things as well
8:39
so some people can't dedicate a full day
8:43
to the to their sport they might have
8:45
families they might have second jobs
8:47
right they might have all these problems
8:50
that's right but
8:51
running a marathon takes training yeah
8:54
right you're doing 25 push-ups
8:56
right
8:57
yeah
9:00
i thought that's 20 that's 26.2 and so
9:03
you at some point you got to run 20
9:05
miles 21 miles that takes a long time
9:08
you do the math at a nine minute mile
9:09
and 20 miles that's that's a that's a
9:11
lot of time people don't have that you
9:13
know people got jobs all over the place
9:15
cycling if i want to be able to ride a
9:17
century which is 100 miles
9:19
right i got to be able to ride i got to
9:22
be able to spend that time 100 miles
9:24
going in average you know i'm i'm i'm
9:27
trying to be swift i'm not like justin
9:28
williams out there right
9:30
who's going like 25 30 miles an hour
9:33
maybe this guy's going to go to the
9:34
olympics and for those that don't know
9:35
about major and taylor i mean he's
9:37
justin williams and legion 39 they're
9:39
the ones that are taking it to the
9:41
to the next level right but being able
9:44
to go a century 100 miles on the bike
9:46
that thinks
9:47
that takes hours four five six hours
9:50
depending on the speed that you're going
9:52
so you know people have family you know
9:54
people have to go to work you know you
9:56
can't just all of a sudden pick up but
9:57
what i would say is
9:59
you know a tip you know
10:01
just like in football if you want to
10:03
play a position and you want to get
10:05
stronger you got to go to the gym
10:07
sometimes that time that you spend in
10:09
the gym takes time you got to be able to
10:11
adjust your schedule it's all about
10:13
prioritization and so we talk about all
10:15
the time people got to decide what they
10:17
want to do
10:18
right if you want to increase your
10:20
mental health you got to work towards
10:21
your mental health if you want to be
10:23
able to do 50 push-ups you got to start
10:24
with 25 push-ups all right 20. i lost 35
10:28
pounds last year but it's because the
10:30
decision i made in order to train myself
10:33
so i could become better we all need to
10:35
become better and that's part of what
10:37
you know that's what endurance sports
10:40
does for you you know what i mean and
10:43
and you got to get people to encourage
10:45
to get the family to participate because
10:46
that's sometimes a barrier you got
10:48
family to take care of you got to be
10:49
able to get your family involved that's
10:51
all go out and train together wake up in
10:53
the morning at six o'clock call your
10:55
neighbors let's go for a long walk
10:56
instead of you know sitting instead of
10:59
being on the phone all the time let's
11:00
get active at lunchtime let's eat and
11:02
walk there's all different things that's
11:04
what i love about you know what gatorade
11:06
endurance is doing all right the honey
11:08
jones is here beyond the barriers it's a
11:10
series you could go to gatorade
11:13
forward endurance.com community or you
11:15
go to instagram.com
11:17
forward slash gatorade endurance so
11:19
that's gatorade endurance dot com
11:21
forward slash community or instagram.com
11:24
forward slash gatorade endurance dan is
11:26
on the line from the inland empire from
11:29
the ie wow well what up dan how are you
11:32
doing
11:33
[Music]
11:34
rises hey dan
11:36
what's going on what's pi you know what
11:39
what i love about what you do out here
11:41
sway uh heather being also tracy you
11:43
give us a chance to give our flowers
11:46
listen i'm from south jersey dahani and
11:48
i just want to tell you how much i
11:50
respect you and and and the reason why i
11:52
respect you so much sir is because you
11:55
gave me a chance as a former d1
11:58
collision uh collegiate athlete to to
12:01
focus more on than just a sport like i
12:06
i had and then just watching you and
12:10
seeing you as a philadelphia eagle at
12:12
the time showed me that i could have
12:14
been more than just a football player i
12:16
focused more on my major i became i
12:19
became a scientist you understand what
12:21
i'm saying so like so just you you were
12:24
literally an inspiration
12:27
that that i never thought i would have a
12:29
chance to just say thank you so i just
12:32
want to i just want to say thank you for
12:33
being the person that you are thank you
12:35
for being a gentleman thank you for
12:37
being a leader man and to see that
12:39
you're still doing it right now and and
12:42
and and without without without being
12:45
being that football player just gives me
12:47
even more drive to just try to emulate
12:49
what you're doing for the community and
12:51
just you know pay it forward so i just
12:52
want to say thank you brother i really
12:54
do that's dope wow
12:56
i want to say i want to say thank you to
12:57
you
12:58
and uh
13:00
i love the fact that you became a
13:01
scientist
13:02
that's amazing and i think that you know
13:04
we that we need to have
13:06
you know more stories
13:09
diversified from the from the world of
13:11
entertainment and sports because there
13:13
are other people that look like us that
13:16
need to be able to show those that don't
13:18
think that there are people out there
13:19
that look like us doing those kinds of
13:20
things and and i i appreciate those
13:23
comments because i i frankly
13:26
i i did it because i love it and i think
13:29
that's that's another part of it you got
13:30
to do the things that you love obviously
13:32
you have to prioritize the things that
13:34
are
13:34
are in front of you and and hopefully
13:37
you're fortunate enough in order to have
13:39
the opportunity to diversify but you got
13:41
to go after your you've got to go after
13:43
your passions and do the things that you
13:44
love and bring along
13:59
all communities need to be able to see
14:01
people in different areas so that they
14:03
too feel comfortable enough
14:06
and by the way talk about it too
14:08
right because sometimes
14:09
you know you're not talking for i'm
14:12
i'm not talking to me i'm talking for
14:14
him i'm talking to you i'm talking for
14:15
other people as well that makes sense um
14:17
hey dan what kind of scientist are you
14:22
dan disease research scientists i'm
14:24
sorry i say that again these research
14:26
scientists okay i'm an infectious
14:28
disease research scientist so i get to
14:30
play with the you know the the bad stuff
14:33
that you see in movies but you know it's
14:36
it's like dahani just said it's
14:38
rewarding because it was something i was
14:40
always interested in but i was always a
14:42
really good athlete as well and you know
14:45
i was kind of brought up to think that's
14:48
all i could do
14:49
so when i was seeing this gentleman on
14:52
philadelphia media and things like that
14:54
and he you know he loved being a
14:56
football player as a kid i used to oh he
14:58
loved football but there was more layers
15:01
to that type of an onion you know and
15:03
and i i kind of understood that wow so i
15:07
can still be me
15:08
and do the things that i love to do but
15:11
there's also multiple things that i love
15:13
to do so again just he was an
15:15
inspiration for me when i when i decided
15:18
to make the choice to say you know what
15:20
this is what i really want to focus on
15:22
so you know once i once i saw that he
15:24
was going to be on your show today i
15:26
said yo this one time i have to call in
15:28
like i said i just want to hand this man
15:30
a multitude of flowers because he was
15:32
definitely an inspiration in everything
15:34
i've become
15:35
wow
15:36
wow very much though
15:38
come on man
15:49
you know
15:50
like birds of paradise
15:52
you know like willie's lilacs
15:54
you know sway i i don't think a lot of
15:56
people know but you know i'm a big fan
15:58
of flowers so i appreciate that one day
16:00
i'm gonna open up a flower shot to be
16:01
honest
16:02
hey
16:03
i get he gave you an african
16:06
violet gave you african violets with the
16:09
purple in it okay i'll take it there you
16:11
go
16:12
dan you're a citizen you're a citizen
16:15
wow
16:16
wow
16:17
yeah
16:18
this is tracy i'm happy to be speaking
16:20
to you bro i'm wondering what advice
16:23
would you give to those who have
16:26
friends or family members who simply are
16:29
not in the season of their life where
16:30
they do care about being active you know
16:34
we've times heard that you are you know
16:37
the average of the five people closest
16:40
to you or like sometimes you outgrow
16:42
friends um personally i kind of have a
16:45
different viewpoint on both of those
16:47
things um because i think that people
16:50
can be strong in other areas where they
16:52
may be able to be and assist you but
16:55
yeah how do you how do you deal with
16:57
that is that enough where someone should
16:59
now have a different position in your
17:01
life if they don't value health in the
17:04
same way that you do
17:07
well i think it's uh
17:10
i think it's always important to kind of
17:13
number one diversify your surroundings
17:15
of people regardless of where they're
17:17
from in order to gain experience and
17:19
knowledge
17:20
i think when it comes to health and
17:21
wellness
17:22
i think number one you have to be an
17:25
advocate yourself you have to do the
17:27
things yourself and then people start to
17:29
to see and then they start to wonder and
17:32
question and i think
17:33
you have to answer those questions
17:35
holistically and you have to be able to
17:37
give them a plan but first you have to
17:38
tell them your story
17:40
right one of the things as i said before
17:43
i lost 35 pounds over the last year
17:46
that's because i got more into my biking
17:49
i got more into my workouts and i
17:50
actually
17:51
found a community of people and we do
17:54
this workout every monday wednesday
17:55
friday at seven o'clock in the morning
17:57
and 52 cars right and
18:00
we each lead on different times and
18:03
we've each been in different places
18:05
um and we've each challenged each other
18:08
and i think
18:09
one is you have to challenge other
18:11
people
18:12
two is you have to tell your story
18:14
and three you have to bring people along
18:16
you know you might have a friend that
18:17
might not be in shape just show up at
18:19
their house
18:20
you have a friend um that might feel
18:22
down about you know their their health
18:25
spend time with them you know kind of
18:28
softly guide them instead of going to
18:30
lunch with them say hey let's just go
18:31
for a walk in the park
18:33
instead of you know having a breakfast
18:35
say hey why don't you just wake up seven
18:37
o'clock and go spend some time
18:39
you know
18:39
spend some time by the river
18:42
you can you can lightly move these
18:45
things
18:47
to get people involved in things that
18:49
they would never otherwise done to try
18:51
things out you know number one
18:54
when we talk about these these barriers
18:56
is being able to
18:58
to bring communities along right to get
19:00
encouragement encouragement from other
19:03
people that's what you have to
19:04
ultimately do
19:06
right got it
19:08
thank you thank you honey i'm gonna take
19:10
one more call um
19:12
i i asked people if they were facing
19:14
barriers to call up and mj from
19:16
mississippi has called up mj grand rises
19:19
how are you doing
19:20
hey mj roger
19:34
i'm in the warehouse logistics skill
19:36
right been there for almost 25 years
19:39
and um
19:41
every
19:41
corporation i work with
19:43
they recognize i'm intelligent i got
19:46
good ideas
19:47
but when it comes time for me to you
19:49
know saying get to get the recognition
19:51
by getting another position always get
19:53
passed over so like i got this job now
19:57
where
19:58
i'm on the road so my company gets a
20:00
crew of people together and they go out
20:01
and help fix warehouses throughout the
20:03
country
20:04
and in my last site i gave my manager
20:08
a banging idea
20:10
i told him how i would help his his his
20:12
his part there in mississippi i told him
20:14
how it would benefit his his core group
20:17
and i could help you know saying um
20:19
retain his employees because he keeps
20:21
losing employees because no one gets
20:23
trained
20:24
i'm excellent on all the machines in in
20:27
the warehouse
20:28
i got good rapport with everybody
20:30
everyone gravitates to you know i'm a
20:32
natural born leader but i can't get the
20:35
opportunity to show
20:37
how good of a leader right
20:41
and so what you need to you are you
20:43
asking for advice
20:46
yeah yeah you know so like um
20:49
i mean i'm on the verge now
20:52
i want to
20:53
come off the road
20:55
go back you know i'm saying to the
20:57
warehouse to what i was doing but i like
20:59
the aspect of being able to touch down
21:01
in different cities you know what i'm
21:02
saying i've been catching up with old
21:04
friends about 20 years ago 25 years ago
21:07
you know what i'm saying just by my job
21:10
and and that's like a perk i don't want
21:12
to give that kirka
21:14
but
21:15
on the other hand i'm tired it's it's
21:17
frustrating seeing all these people up
21:20
here
21:21
trying to tell me how to do my job and
21:22
they've never physically done my job so
21:25
if you can't do my job how are you going
21:27
to tell me to do my
21:28
job what are your thoughts on that
21:32
in terms of the barriers that he faced
21:35
oh
21:36
i'm listening to the story you know
21:39
there there does come a moment
21:41
in everybody's life where you have to
21:44
ultimately make a decision about
21:46
what you want to do
21:49
not what you're doing but what you
21:50
ultimately want to do and you set that
21:52
plan
21:54
and then you set that plan in motion and
21:57
then you start to build community of
21:59
people who can
22:01
help activate that plan and then you
22:03
start to make commitments to that plan
22:06
and it has to be really intentional
22:08
you know just like you would train
22:11
in order to play sports
22:13
you have to train yourself to make the
22:15
transition
22:16
and you have to write down
22:18
what your next play is going to be
22:20
against the playbooks that have already
22:22
been
22:23
written
22:24
right people love the game of football
22:27
those those those plays have been ran
22:29
for decades
22:32
the great coaches take the plans and
22:34
they take the plays and they
22:37
and they make these slight
22:39
so what i would encourage you to do
22:42
is to map out your plans to make your
22:45
plays
22:46
read about other people and how they've
22:48
made their plays transition and start to
22:51
implement with the right community of
22:53
people around you right build that team
22:56
implement the plan and then go on
22:58
execute
22:59
it's very similar they're very similar
23:01
to sports i would say the one thing to
23:03
always just keep in mind
23:06
is when you do go about the plan you
23:08
gotta you you have to focus in on it and
23:11
i think one of the most important things
23:13
about you know being
23:15
mindful of your own mental health and
23:18
your physical health
23:20
is you do that in order to
23:22
maintain focus
23:24
right you know a lot of people don't
23:26
think that
23:27
you know staying healthy
23:29
is a priority but if you don't stay
23:31
healthy you can't focus
23:33
because your body is the most important
23:35
thing that's going to carry carry you
23:36
through so i would put that plan into
23:38
place i would recognize that if there is
23:42
the barriers out there acknowledge the
23:44
barriers but the barriers sometimes a
23:46
lot of people think the barrier is is
23:49
you know
23:50
it's like 10 by 10. sometimes the
23:52
barrier is only four by four you can
23:54
just go around it
23:55
and what the play will allow you to do
23:58
is to go around that barrier and make
24:01
your own
24:02
sort
24:09
mj it sounds like you got all the
24:10
resources and tools and knowledge you
24:13
need to elevate in the field that you
24:15
want to be in and man just go for it
24:17

25:09

25:11
workout you got just coming you know you
25:14
gotta encourage and bring people along
25:16
that's what i always say you know it
25:18
just takes time and things don't happen
25:21
you know like that you got to be able to
25:22
put the time and energy just like you've
25:24
built up your show your show is amazing
25:26
and it's got that longevity that's what
25:28
i want people to know is like you build
25:30
the plan you build the place and then
25:32
you can endure through all of that that
25:34
will take you wherever you want to go
25:36
