VARIOUS OF DRONE SHOTS OF UGANDA KOBS BEING RELEASED INTO PIAN UPE WILDLIFE RESERVEPIAN UPE, UGANDA - AUGUST 20: The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has launched an operation to translocate 200 Uganda kobs from Murchison Falls National Park to the Pian Upe Wildlife Reserve to boost dwindling wildlife numbers and restore species diversity. Rangers use large corral nets to safely corral and capture the antelopes before loading them into specialized transport vehicles for the cross-country journey. Dr. Patrick Atimnedi, UWA’s Deputy Director of Veterinary Services and head of the translocation team, said the 15-day operation will span six trips, with each transfer limited to 40 animals to ensure animal welfare during transit. Atimnedi noted that the transfer broadens the species' habitat, relieving environmental pressures from ongoing oil, gas, and infrastructure developments around Murchison Falls while populating Pian Upe's expansive 5,000-square-kilometer reserve. Pian Upe Senior Warden Bwire Isaih stated that restoring the native kob population will stabilize the grassland ecosystem, complement growing cheetah sightings, and stimulate local ecotourism for neighboring communities.
