Storyline Chinese agricultural technology empowers rural Zimbabwe For years, the fertile soils of Zindi Village used to hold untapped potential… before recurring droughts dried up rivers and wells…leaving farming communities struggling to produce enough food. But presently, that story is gradually changing. Solar powered boreholes were sunk in 2024 in Zimbabwe's first China Agricultural Demonstration Village. The impact has been immediate and significant. Farai Mwakutuya, Reporter: "These solar panels have become the engine of agricultural and social transformation here in Zindi Village. They are bringing a resource that was once scarce within reach of 85 households." Handina Gwanzu, Zindi Community Member: "A few years ago we would have been idle right now because at this time of the year all the rivers, wells and other water sources in this area would have dried up." Gwanzu currently leads a group of about 30 women who have been trained to grow high-value crops once associated mainly with commercial farms. Jotam Dondofema, Director, Ministry of Agriculture: "Technologies like the green house have never been here in our rural areas…You have also seen drip irrigation. We are trying to conserve water and use water for the maximum benefits and we are also saying we can produce all year round with these technologies. So, we are going to have money day in and out." The community has also diversified into poultry production, currently raising batches of 300 birds, with plans to expand tenfold…as household incomes continue to grow. Catherine Gwetsuro, Zindi Community Member: "The money we are making from the poultry projects has been life changing. We can now afford to comfortably send our children to school without struggling to get by." As climate change continues to threaten rain-fed agriculture, Zindi Village is emerging as an example of how renewable energy, modern farming techniques and international cooperation …can help to climate-proof rural communities… while creating more economic opportunities.
