SPEAKERS GIVING SPEECH TO CROWDNAIROBI, KENYA - SEPT. 8, 2026: Thousands of nurses and midwives marched through the streets of Nairobi on Tuesday, Sept. 8, demanding the full implementation of a long-standing collective bargaining agreement and protesting severe understaffing in public health facilities. Organized by the Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM), the demonstrations marked the beginning of the sixth week of widespread industrial action that has disrupted medical operations across public hospitals nationwide. During the demonstration, protesters chanted slogans and carried banners. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights announced last week that 79 people died over a three-day period due to the strike, with officials noting that the death toll continues to rise as the crisis persists. The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), representing doctors, issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government, warning that doctors will also strike if the nurses' strike is not resolved.
