VARIOUS OF SICK AND INJURED PALESTINIANS PROTESTING WHILE HOLDING THEIR CRUTCHESKHAN YOUNIS, GAZA, PALESTINE - AUG 23, 2026: Dozens of ill and wounded Palestinians gathered on Sunday, Aug. 23, at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, Gaza, demanding the opening of border crossings to access medical treatment abroad due to inadequate local healthcare capacity. Demonstrators, including people in wheelchairs, on crutches, or lying on the floor, urged international human rights organisations and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to intervene. Protesters, including injured resident Ibrahim Abdunnebi and parents of children with severe conditions like muscle atrophy and spinal curvature, stated that local facilities lack equipment for necessary surgeries. Demonstrators emphasized that remaining in Gaza without specialized care continually worsens their health. Although the Palestinian Ministry of Health issues medical referrals for specialized treatment unavailable in Gaza, patients require Israeli authorization to leave the region. Gaza’s health sector has been severely weakened by Israel’s genocide against Palestinians since Oct. 8, 2023. Israel has destroyed hospitals and health facilities and prevented the entry of medicines, medical supplies and fuel, severely reducing the ability of medical facilities to provide treatment, especially for cancer patients and people with chronic diseases. Since the ceasefire deal was signed last October, the area occupied by Israeli forces in Gaza has increased from 53 percent to 70 percent, according to Israeli officials. More than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed across the coastal enclave, mostly women and children, since Israel launched its war in October 2023.
