Organized primarily by the Communist Party of Peru, activists carrying banners and flags converged on major thoroughfares to voice opposition to US foreign policy. Protesters criticized Rubio’s long-standing support for the economic embargo against Cuba and accused Washington of complicity in ongoing Israeli military operations in Gaza and military actions in the wider Middle East. "We are facing a situation surrounding Marco Rubio's visit to Peru, which seeks to bring Peru under US foreign policy at a time when the United States represents a threat to humanity by carrying out genocidal actions in Palestine and Gaza, attacking a sovereign country such as Iran, and now facing the decline of its economic power in the world," a protest attendee said during the march. Rubio’s visit to Peru comes as Washington seeks to deepen security and economic cooperation with regional partners and strengthen efforts to counter transnational criminal organizations.
