The fire started around midday in wooded and scrubland near the Solfatara, an ancient volcanic crater located between Naples and the Pozzuoli district. Flames spread across a wide area, sending a column of black smoke into the sky that was visible from several kilometers away. The fire developed near the Italian Air Force Academy and the Petronio school in Pozzuoli. Emergency crews were deployed to the area, while Naples Prefect Michele di Bari convened a meeting of the Rescue Coordination Center to coordinate the response, local officials said. The fire occurred as Italy experienced its third heat wave of the summer. Red health alerts were issued for Florence and Perugia until Wednesday, meaning the extreme temperatures posed a risk to the general population, according to state news agency ANSA. The heat wave has been driven by a powerful African anticyclone carrying hot air across the Mediterranean region. At least seven heat-related deaths have been recorded in Italy this summer, according to Italian media reports.
