The fire broke out in scrubland near the city, particularly threatening buildings in the Zappulla neighborhood and the A18 highway connection. Taormina Mayor Cateno De Luca said the situation in the Zappulla area was “truly tragic,” adding that a firefighting helicopter had arrived and that authorities were awaiting a Canadair aircraft. He later said the blaze had been partially brought under control through the efforts of firefighters. Italian firefighters said three ground teams with fire engines, along with two firefighting aircraft and a helicopter, were deployed to battle the blaze, with firefighting efforts continuing.
