The fire, which broke out on Tuesday, April 28, between the cities of Pisa and Lucca, spread rapidly over the last 72 hours due to strong winds. Authorities report that the blaze began when a farmer lost control of a fire intended to burn olive branches. Firefighters, forestry workers, and civil defense volunteers are working around the clock to contain the flames, supported by four firefighting aircraft and several helicopters. Teams are also using drones to monitor shifting wind directions and track the fire’s progress across both sides of the mountain. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced the deployment of army units to the region following an emergency request from the Pisa Governorate. Tuscany Regional President Eugenio Giani stated that persistent strong winds continue to push the flames forward, complicating containment efforts. Local officials have evacuated 3,000 residents from the towns of Asciano and San Giuliano Terme, while the Lucca Municipality has initiated further evacuations in residential areas near the mountain.
