Search and rescue operations continued for five other people reported missing following the collapse. The collapse took place in the Pistunina district, bringing down a mixed-use building that contained residential apartments and commercial premises. Three people were taken to hospital, including one in critical condition, while two others were treated for less severe injuries, according to local officials. The area was cordoned off, and firefighters launched a large-scale search-and-rescue operation involving search and rescue teams, search dogs, drones, and alpine and speleological (caving) rescue units to locate people believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. Initial assessments by Messina Mayor Federico Basile suggested the collapse may have been triggered by the explosion of a gas cylinder. However, local media reported that investigators are also examining the possibility of a structural failure, noting that maintenance work had been underway on the building's ground floor. The Messina prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the incident, and prosecutors visited the site to inspect the collapse and begin to determine its cause.
