ICRC FLAGDEIR AL-BALAH, GAZA, PALESTINE - MAY 25, 2026: Israel released 5 more Palestinian detainees on Monday, May 25, under the terms of a ceasefire agreement that took effect on Oct. 10. The freed detainees were received by teams from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) at the Karem Abu Salem crossing before being transferred to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah. Ahmed Abu Sultan, one of the released Palestinians, said conditions inside Israeli prisons were “extremely harsh,” noting that detainees were subjected to constant beatings, insults, and shortages of food and water. Abu Sultan said prisoners were held for long hours under difficult conditions and that even basic humanitarian needs were not met in the prisons. According to figures released by Gaza’s Health Ministry, continued violations of the ceasefire agreement have killed 904 Palestinians and injured 2,713 others since the truce took effect. The agreement was meant to halt Israel’s two-year war that killed more than 72,000 people, most of them women and children, and injured over 172,000 since October 2023 and caused massive destruction affecting 90% of civilian infrastructure.
