Rihanna Shooting Suspect Opposes Bid For Mental Evaluation
May 14, 2026
The woman accused of firing 20 shots at Rihanna’s Beverly Hills-area home has appeared in court and opposed a competency evaluation in her case.
Ivanna Ortiz rejected her public defender’s request to suspend proceedings and instead pushed to quickly schedule a probable cause hearing.
Los Angeles County Judge Shannon Cooley said there was insufficient evidence to force a mental competency review against Ortiz’s wishes.
“A competency hearing is mandated only if there’s objective evidence of a defendant’s incompetence,” Judge Cooley said at the hearing.
“Voluntary barriers to communication with counsel or a doctor are not sufficient,” Cooley added, indicating that Ortiz stopped cooperating with her public defender before the hearing.
Ortiz has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, and three counts of shooting at an inhabited dwelling.
Prosecutors allege Ortiz targeted Rihanna’s home on March 8 while A$AP Rocky, the couple’s children, and Rihanna’s mother were inside.
