0:06
for this podcast is Danny jillette we're
0:08
back for another episode and we're going
0:09
to talk about Nebraska basketball their
0:11
failures at Penn State earlier this week
0:13
and how much trouble they're in in terms
0:15
of the NCA tournament or in the future
0:17
we're also going to look at some
0:18
Nebraska football recruiting nuggets
0:20
some things going on in the diamond with
0:22
Jordie ball absolutely killing it so
0:24
before we get into all that please hit

0:29
how are you on the Friday morning I'm
0:31
tired I watched the uh the foreign
0:33
Nations uh Faceoff final right here in
0:36
Boston went into overtime and uh what a
0:38
great tournament I mean I know it's like
0:41
not really an NHL season type of
0:43
tournament in terms of it counting
0:44
towards the regular season but all the
0:47
teams played hard all the stars were out
0:49
and uh what a great game unfortunately
0:52
Canada got the got the game wining goal
0:54
again reminded me of the 2010 Olympics
0:56
but boy it was a fun tournament and uh
0:59
hopefully they continue I know there
1:00
were some injury concerns especially in
1:03
Boston up here with Charlie McAvoy out
1:05
for the season he aggravated his injury
1:07
but I do love me some hockey and I love
1:09
that all the players took this
1:10
tournament seriously so it was a fun
1:13
watch but I am tired now it was fun I
1:16
didn't watch it I have to say I have to
1:17
admit that I'm not huge hockey fan
1:19
probably should have but I was following
1:21
it along but um I was watching sance so
1:24
I'm a huge Seance fan so that was my uh
1:26
viewing point I'm obsessed with it um at
1:28
any rate I do think that that that's a
1:30
good hockey tournament I do hope that
1:31
they kind of keep that going and maybe
1:33
that'll help uh you know rekindle hockey
1:35
a little bit but uh from a Nebraska
1:37
perspective let's get right into it
1:39
Wednesday night was our predictions were
1:41
both wrong about what was going to
1:42
happen in Happy Valley um I did write at
1:44
huster Big red.com in my bold
1:46
predictions that the only way Penn State
1:48
was going to win that game is if they
1:49
you know forced a bunch of turnovers I
1:51
said if Penn State forced Nebraska to
1:53
turn the ball over on more than 20% of
1:55
its possessions they were going to have
1:56
a good chance to win Nebraska had six
1:58
turnovers you know basic basically by
2:00
the first TV timeout and they just never
2:02
really got into the game they never got
2:03
off the bus so to speak um so that was
2:06
disappointing um but I do feel like you
2:08
know there's a bit of overreaction from
2:11
the fan base because if you look at this
2:13
from you know a three you know uh 360
2:16
foot view right we're going into these
2:17
two Road games and when you're playing
2:19
two Road games generally you want to win
2:21
one of those two I mean that's the goal
2:23
Nebraska did that I understand that Penn
2:25
State is last in the Big 10 and and all
2:27
this other stuff but they were still you
2:29
know the any te rankings they're still
2:31
ranked like 80th so it's not like
2:32
they're a garbage team they just the the
2:34
Big 10 is really difficult this year and
2:36
you know it's if you don't play well
2:39
you're going to get your butt kicked and
2:40
they're going to have to respond but um
2:43
I don't know are you worried about this
2:44
team there's four games left three of
2:46
them are at home um I've said all along
2:48
they got to get to 20 wins so they've
2:49
got 17 right now they play Michigan at
2:51
home um Iowa at home Minnesota at home
2:54
in Ohio State on the road who just lost
2:55
to Northwestern by 21 points at home so
2:58
all four of those games probably
3:00
winnable um but how much trouble is
3:02
Nebraska in right now Danny if any at
3:03
all I don't feel like they're in trouble
3:05
yet I mean I still feel like they can
3:07
you know win two more games and you know
3:11
this team is so Jal and hide I mean they
3:13
looked they looked really good during a
3:15
six game win streak everything was
3:16
clicking and now they' fallen back into
3:18
that slump again so I'm not really
3:20
worried yet I feel confident they can
3:22
they can uh win the games they need to
3:24
but um you talked about the team didn't
3:26
look like they they got off the bus they
3:29
didn't look look like they got out of
3:30
bed so uh yeah um no I'm not too worried
3:34
yet honestly um I I feel like they'll be
3:37
able to bounce back
3:38
strong and I think I know people don't
3:40
like to hear this type of thing but I I
3:42
feel I really do feel like that some of
3:44
it just is a fatigue a little bit I mean
3:47
you they had to play a lot of games
3:49
especially on the road like this game
3:51
against Michigan on Monday that's going
3:53
to be their first home game in 11 days
3:55
so you know I mean I'm I'm not trying to
3:56
make excuses for this team by you know
3:59
any stretch the imagination but you know
4:01
they had to play five games in two weeks
4:04
four games in 10 days three of them you
4:06
know on the road so I mean I do
4:08
understand a little bit why you have
4:09
tired legs it was you know I just it was
4:12
disappointing I mean I just expected to
4:13
see more out of guys like Jaan Gary and
4:15
Bryce Williams especially early in that
4:17
game trying to establish the tempo but
4:20
um it is what it is at the end of the
4:22
day when you look at the Bracketology
4:24
Pro projections the bracket Matrix and
4:26
everything it did not really change
4:28
things for Nebraska they did drop in the
4:29
n rankings which is the n rankings hate
4:32
Nebraska I mean there's just like no
4:33
yeah I feel like the N rankings aren't a
4:36
good Baseline in my opinion now they
4:38
could beat like Michigan State or like
4:40
they could probably beat Michigan and
4:42
like drop a spot like I don't understand
4:44
the N rankings I just don't but uh
4:46
they're still 50 like around 50th so
4:49
that's not in a spot that's going to
4:50
hurt them um and they've got you know a
4:52
really good chance Michigan's playing
4:54
Michigan State tonight and whoever wins
4:56
that game is going to be you know so
4:58
place in first but Michigan going to
4:59
have to turn around two days after that
5:01
and come to Lincoln Nebraska so to me
5:03
that's a golden opportunity especially
5:06
you know if Michigan wins that happens
5:07
to win the game tonight they've got a
5:09
little bit of a cushion in the Big 10
5:10
Race I'm not saying it's going to be
5:11
easy but maybe you can get Michigan on a
5:13
bit of an emotional letdown and they're
5:14
going to be tired as heck too because
5:16
that's going to be their third game they
5:17
played on Tuesday as well so that's
5:19
gonna be their third game in less than a
5:20
week so maybe Nebraska can take
5:22
advantage of some rough scheduling from
5:25
the Michigan side of things but truly to
5:26
me I think they've they have to win the
5:29
game
5:30
um Iowa and Minnesota at home if they
5:32
win those two games and they win one in
5:34
the Big 10 tournament this team's going
5:36
dancing and the the fatigue thing isn't
5:39
isn't an excuse I mean it's it's reality
5:42
they've hit a wall and we talked about
5:43
this I think last week um Bryce Williams
5:47
and Jan Gary they've been asked to do a
5:49
lot and you can see how tired their
5:51
bodies are so I mean now it's just about
5:53
pushing through it and trying to um
5:56
trying to make the most of it but this
5:58
team is definitely tired right now and
6:00
um I I know you know that doesn't excuse
6:04
what happened on Wednesday because they
6:05
played bad there's no two ways about it
6:07
but there's definitely something to uh
6:10
your your fatigue comment for
6:12
sure um and then I wanted to mention too
6:15
uh talk a little about Fred hyberg here
6:17
in a sec because I know you had some
6:18
Twitter uh debates going on but the
6:20
Nebraska women did get a really
6:22
important win on um Wednesday night
6:24
beating Oregon another team that's kind
6:25
of on the bubble so I'm thinking that's
6:28
probably going to you know secure their
6:29
spot in the tournament they're playing
6:30
Washington at home on Sunday though
6:32
which will be Alexis marowski's last
6:34
home game um she just had her 50th
6:36
double double um so it'd be great to see
6:38
them get that win I feel like if they
6:40
can get that they'll probably you know
6:42
wrap up their birth um but yeah in terms
6:44
of the men I mean this would be if they
6:46
can get it it would be two years in a
6:47
row of making the NCA tournament I
6:48
actually had somebody comment like who
6:50
cares if them Nebraska makes the NCA
6:52
tournament they're probably going to
6:52
lose their first round game anyway which
6:54
I mean I understand your sentiment like
6:56
I get it we've never won a tournament
6:57
game but making the NCA tournament and
6:59
not making the NCA tournament is a big
7:01
deal for your basketball program and if
7:03
they make it two years in a row I think
7:05
that's only going to help them with
7:06
recruiting and everything else moving
7:07
forward so it is a big deal win or lose
7:09
the game people have to realize that
7:11
there is a ceiling for this program I
7:13
think and I think it's not gonna be
7:14
national championship and you know it
7:18
may not even be the sweet 16 with the
7:20
way the big tenis form now but making
7:22
the NCA tournament is a big
7:24
deal to me like what you have to do if
7:27
you're a program like Nebraska because
7:28
yeah like it's going be very hard to
7:30
ever build a true title Contender you're
7:31
going to have to catch lightning in a
7:32
bottle but what you need to do is make
7:34
the tournament every year and if you
7:36
make the tournament then that's when you
7:38
get lucky and you start making runs and
7:40
stuff like that I mean like Iowa state
7:41
has never was in a program that anybody
7:43
thought could ever win a championship
7:44
and Fred got them pretty far they got
7:46
pretty far in that tournament and uh you
7:48
know they're still a pretty solid
7:49
program so like yeah I don't think
7:51
Nebraska's ever going to be a basketball
7:53
blue blood or whatever but I do think
7:55
that this team can consistently make the
7:57
NCA tournament and I think that Fred
7:58
hyberg is the best option to do that and
8:01
I I know that some people may not have
8:03
as much confidence in him after this
8:05
season but I think this season's given
8:06
me more confidence and his ability to
8:08
you know continue to win with this
8:10
program in the Big 10 and people thought
8:13
that I wanted Fred to be fired I don't
8:14
want Fred to be fired because apparently
8:17
a lot of these fans don't remember how
8:20
bare the cuper was when Tim miles left
8:22
and I understand his final season there
8:24
was an injury
8:26
to um Isaac Copeland I think was and
8:29
that kind of knocked the doors off of
8:31
that season because they started 10- two
8:34
and um you
8:36
know the cup was Bare for for whatever
8:39
reason you know Tim miles could develop
8:43
but towards the end of things he just
8:44
couldn't recruit and now at least Fred
8:47
is bringing in rosters that can recruit
8:50
I think he's led the program close to
8:51
its ceiling and I don't think he
8:53
deserves to be fired and the fans that
8:55
want him fired I don't know if you get a
8:58
better coach in here
9:01
yeah I don't I don't think that you
9:02
would get a better coach in here I mean
9:04
you could obviously find uh you know
9:05
other quality coaches but I think Fred
9:08
hyberg is really good and um I still I
9:11
still think this team's gonna make the
9:12
NCA tournament so we'll see what happens
9:13
on Monday but I feel like this team's
9:16
going to bounce back and uh so you know
9:18
just take a deep breath everybody it's
9:20
going to be fine um even if they lose to
9:22
Michigan on Monday that's not the end of
9:23
the world um but they do have to they
9:25
can't lose to Iowa and Minnesota at home
9:27
they lose one of those two games at home
9:29
and and then I think you're in trouble
9:30
of missing the NCA tournament so Iowa
9:32
scares me a little bit honestly
9:34
Minnesota not so much but Iowa scares me
9:36
for sure yeah but every game is at this
9:38
point scary I mean with the way that
9:40
this team's playing because you just
9:41
don't know who's going to show up so
9:42
yeah you're right and it tends too
9:45
difficult if you don't play well you'll
9:46
get your butt kicked it doesn't matter
9:47
who you are you know if so that's just
9:50
that's just the way this league is um so
9:52
you mentioned uh some recruiting stuff
9:54
that's a good segue to recruiting and I
9:56
want to start with Trey Taylor um 2027
10:00
quarterback the four star um he's
10:02
scheduled some spring visits Nebraska is
10:04
one of the programs that's going to get
10:05
a visit this spring along with Notre
10:06
Dame Georgia Illinois Michigan uh Texas
10:09
A&M and LSU um he did make some
10:12
interesting comments here's what Trey
10:14
Taylor had to say about Nebraska this is
10:16
the only school that I can say
10:17
absolutely love the whole staff only two
10:19
schools have had the head coach come to
10:20
my school Nebraska is one of them I feel
10:22
very comfortable there so um I think
10:25
Nebraska is very near the top of of this
10:28
recruitment and it's a good sign I think
10:30
that Trey Taylor is coming back on
10:31
campus and hopefully they can get him
10:33
back again this summer like get him on
10:35
campus as many times as possible yeah
10:38
Craig Smith the rivals made a good point
10:40
earlier this week when he said that
10:42
Nebraska is close enough to home for
10:45
Trey Taylor but far enough away to where
10:47
he can have that college experience and
10:48
that definitely plays a part in it too
10:50
Taylor has also talked about how much he
10:52
likes the business school so he's
10:54
looking at it from an academic Point as
10:56
well which is important when you know
10:57
deciding your future and so I think
11:00
Nebraska is really in play here uh
11:02
they've they've made Taylor a priority
11:04
Target as far back as last year last
11:06
calendar year and so um yeah I think
11:10
this is really good news for Nebraska I
11:12
love Trey Taylor and I think he's an
11:14
extremely talented quarterback and
11:16
getting a quarterback from the Midwest
11:18
in the Chicago area where there is a lot
11:21
of talented players and Prospects I
11:23
think would be awesome for the
11:25
program and I think um just the fact
11:29
that uh you know they're getting him in
11:32
early they're they're not behind in this
11:33
recruitment in terms of you know the
11:35
elite quarterback and and so I like that
11:36
like get this guy done making your top
11:38
priority and uh kind of set the stage
11:40
for the 2027 class so um I really like
11:43
what Nebraska's doing there in terms of
11:46
uh you know just some other the 2026
11:48
class there's also some news um you know
11:51
tight end uh Luke senson out of
11:53
California um locked in five official
11:55
visits Nebraska's one of them um and so
11:57
he's kind of a been a top priority
12:00
um let's see who are the other visitors
12:02
that we've got coming is it Lincoln
12:03
Watkins is the other tight end that
12:04
we've got coming um so that's another
12:07
one um and then an offensive tackle
12:10
matali Benjamin um out of uh West Valley
12:14
City Utah 66 305 pounds coming for an
12:17
official visit um this summer Nebraska
12:19
actually is the leader right now
12:20
according to the on three prediction
12:22
machine um not that that means a whole
12:25
lot but still some uh some quality
12:27
visits and then this summer another
12:28
running back that's going to be another
12:30
visitor um Deen Walker um out of uh
12:34
Missouri Raymore Missouri so another guy
12:36
that you know Jamar mosy could help with
12:38
ranked 99th overall in the on three
12:39
industry rankings so he's going to be
12:41
taking an official visit Kansas is the
12:44
slight lead right now according to the
12:45
on three prediction machine but we're
12:46
right there and according to Lincoln
12:48
Watkins the three star tight end um out
12:50
of the state of Michigan who's 407th
12:53
Nebraska has a slight lead right now
12:54
over Purdue so that one's kind of
12:57
interesting in the sense that Michigan
12:59
hasn't really been involved in that
13:00
recruitment so you know I don't I'm I
13:04
guess what what it makes me feel like
13:06
Nebraska's almost out of the running
13:08
with Matt Ludwick so because I haven't
13:10
seen much about him at all no I haven't
13:12
seen much about him at all until you
13:13
mentioned his name right there I had
13:15
forgotten um but I feel good about
13:17
Lincoln Watkins I mean marus saterfield
13:19
took an inhome visit uh with Watkins at
13:22
the end of January I believe it was and
13:25
I think Watkins came to campus for
13:28
Junior Day um so I I feel good about
13:31
Lincoln Watkins I don't want to say Matt
13:34
ludwick's completely out the door but
13:35
like you mentioned I haven't seen
13:37
anything about him I haven't heard
13:38
anything about him so the one thing you
13:41
know one of the many things the staff is
13:43
good at is always having a plan B and I
13:47
think Lincoln Watkins is a very talented
13:49
Plan B and I think senson Luke senson is
13:53
somebody to watch as well although both
13:55
of those visit lists are very impressive
13:56
so so we'll see what happens but um they
14:00
those two are going to be uh
14:02
recruitments to watch for sure yeah and
14:05
I think uh with lwig um I Michigan and
14:09
Texas Tech both visited him um in
14:11
Billings for one of his basketball games
14:13
so I feel like it's it's down to those
14:15
two teams although Nebraska does have
14:16
some Family Ties but I don't know I feel
14:18
like it's um right now I think the
14:21
essential battle what I've heard um you
14:24
know just because I do have a little bit
14:25
some connections I think Texas Tech
14:26
actually might have the edge and I think
14:28
what's going to happen is I think that
14:30
Texas Tech is going to you know put up a
14:32
huge nil offer and I don't know that
14:33
Michigan's going to pay that much for a
14:35
tight end just to be honest like
14:36
positional value wise so I think I think
14:38
Matt lwi is gonna go to Texas Tech based
14:40
on just nilo money so any Garrett
14:42
Maguire connection to that too as well
14:44
or just based off of nil money do you
14:46
think uh I think it's just nil I mean
14:48
Garrett was there Garrett was part of
14:50
the trip with his dad but I think it's
14:52
just I think they just have the money to
14:54
offer and I think if Michigan was close
14:56
or willing to match it I think they
14:58
would probably get him just based on you
15:00
know they have quite a good history of
15:02
getting tight ends to the NFL so I I
15:04
think that they if all things being
15:06
equal I think they probably would win
15:07
that recruitment but um I don't know
15:09
right now I feel like Texas Tech and so
15:11
maybe it's just a situation where
15:12
Nebraska's like we're not getting into a
15:14
bidding war for a tight end like I'm
15:16
sorry and that makes sense like you have
15:18
to make those decisions yes tight ends
15:20
can be really valuable but you know I
15:22
understand them not wanting to get into
15:24
a bidding war
15:25
for and I feel confident about the room
15:27
for the future so
15:29
um you know I I don't blame them for not
15:32
wanting to get into a bidding war over a
15:33
tight end either um I think it's a smart
15:36
play because like you said you have to
15:37
be you have to be careful with how you
15:39
use your resources so I'd rather them
15:41
use it on you know a running back or
15:44
some more
15:45
alignment and then um in terms of uh
15:48
instate recruits that you need to know
15:50
uh Tory Pitman um the safety kind of
15:53
athlete wide receiver um got an offer
15:55
from LSU um so just over the recently so
15:58
he's going to be a big he's going to be
16:00
the next one like Missouri Kansas State
16:02
Miami all these teams have offered him
16:04
literally in the last week Iowa State I
16:06
mean it's uh you know there's going to
16:09
be a lot of interest in him so he's
16:10
going to be I think the next kind of
16:11
national recruitment out of Nebraska so
16:13
um GNA be one to watch for the 2027
16:16
class yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he
16:17
went elsewhere just because he's that
16:18
good but um it's good to see over these
16:21
last couple classes the amount of
16:22
talented kids in the RAS getting
16:24
National recognition and you know those
16:27
that are staying home as well is is kind
16:29
of cool to see but I expect Pitman to
16:32
not end up at Nebraska and that's a good
16:34
thing for the state you know it's a good
16:36
thing to Showcase their talent and the
16:38
fact that so many schools are looking at
16:41
Nebraska as a state with a rich High
16:43
School football Talent is is very um is
16:47
is is a very positive
16:49
thing yeah I think it is so it'll be
16:52
interesting to see um you know where
16:54
they kind of develop things with him I
16:55
think they've got off to a good start um
16:56
he's been to campus a few times so you
16:58
know
16:59
definitely uh made him a priority and I
17:01
feel like that that uh recruitment is
17:03
still pretty wide open so um but getting
17:05
a guy like Trey Taylor and and starting
17:07
off like that definitely would be a good
17:09
help yeah all right so let's uh switch
17:13
over to uh to wrap up here's some
17:16
Diamond notes and it's been a fun start
17:18
to the season for the Nebraska softball
17:21
team got another win yesterday Jordy
17:22
ball um a complete game win over Baylor
17:25
4 to one she only allowed two hits um
17:28
struck out and actually got Nebraska out
17:30
of a Bases Loaded Jam um in the sixth
17:32
inning with no out so she's been
17:34
incredible they did lose to number four
17:36
UCLA last night nine to one but Jordy
17:37
didn't pitch so um I wish she would have
17:40
if it would have been a postseason game
17:41
I'm sure she would have just pitched
17:42
both of them so kind of interesting that
17:44
they didn't pitch her against UCLA but
17:45
at any rate this Nebraska team
17:48
definitely looks like one that could
17:49
make the College World
17:50
Series yeah I mean she what what an
17:52
incredible week Dro balls had a no
17:55
hitter on on uh on Friday I believe it
17:58
was and this is just you know we we knew
18:00
coming in that she was going to kind of
18:02
be the Catalyst for this program and
18:06
unfortunately last season was cut short
18:08
by injury but you know now it looks like
18:11
she was never even injured she's just
18:13
firing the ball and uh pitching at a
18:15
high level so it's made the softball
18:17
team fun to watch and what's incredible
18:19
I mean I'll be honest I just I did not
18:21
realize she was as good of a hitter as
18:23
she is I mean I knew she was an
18:24
incredible pitcher but my God she's an
18:25
incredible hitter too like she how many
18:28
pitchers can play in the field every day
18:29
when they don't pitch so I mean like
18:32
what she's been able to do from both
18:34
perspectives I think is is incredible
18:36
she might be the best player in the
18:37
country like I'm not even joking she she
18:39
probably is the best player in the
18:40
country and uh it's going to be really
18:42
fun these next couple of months and
18:44
hopefully um we'll be able to make a run
18:46
obviously want to win the Big 10
18:48
Championship first that's like the
18:49
number one goal but and that's obviously
18:51
not going to be easy with UCLA and some
18:53
of these other West Coast programs but
18:55
um at any rate as far as baseball um a
18:57
two and two start which was a little bit
19:00
you know disappointing but the loss to
19:01
UC Irvine they're ranked now so um
19:04
nothing really to worry about there um
19:06
three games on the road this week at
19:08
Louisiana um it's going to be the same
19:10
guys uh starting Macy mccon will Walsh
19:13
Tai horn um so big weekend series and
19:16
then they'll play at Sam Houston State
19:18
um next week as well in kind of a
19:21
midweek game but uh yeah good kind of a
19:24
solid start for baseball I know fans
19:26
were kind of bummed about the two and
19:27
two start but I mean that's base you
19:29
can't you can't overreact too much to to
19:31
one or two games and it's a tough start
19:33
to schedule early in the season so I
19:35
think once this team Finds Its Groove
19:36
it'll it'll form much better than we saw
19:39
in the in the first weekend although a
19:41
win over vanderbel is certainly not a
19:43
bad thing so I mean I think that
19:45
definitely shows the potential that this
19:47
team has and I really do like the top
19:50
three starters I think Tai horn um he I
19:53
think he only pitched like five innings
19:54
in his first game um against I think
19:57
that was against Vanderbilt actually but
19:58
only allowed like two runs he didn't get
20:00
a win didn't get the decision but uh he
20:02
put out a solid effort um MCC didn't
20:05
have his best game in the first in the
20:06
opener but he's gonna be solid and will
20:08
Walsh was he tossed seven uh scoreless
20:11
innings in their win so I think he's
20:13
reminded me a lot of last season's Big
20:14
10 tournament with his performance so
20:17
and Jackson brocketts you know still out
20:19
there and you know he had the no hitter
20:21
obviously last year and that big game um
20:23
in the Big 10 tournament like they don't
20:24
win that big 10 Championship if he
20:26
doesn't deliver you know in that
20:27
tournament so um I I really like where
20:29
this team is at and I know some fans
20:32
were frustrated by the start but uh F
20:35
what else
20:36
is by everything that else is new
20:38
everything will be okay if they if they
20:40
lose this series against Louisiana if
20:42
they lose two out of three I will give
20:44
you permission to be upset about that
20:45
how about that yeah okay now I mean that
20:47
sounds good and then if the basketball
20:49
team takes a complete nose dive then you
20:51
can talk about it Fred hoy's on the hot
20:53
seat but yeah so all right all right you
