hey Husker fans welcome back to the Husker big red YouTube channel I'm Chris Peterson and joining me as always is Danny Gillette and we're back here on
0:06
this Friday morning with a few things to talk about one one is Nebraska football's top 2026 commitment um the
0:12
Huskers may need to worry about a flip there and there's been a big rankings update so we're going to check in on that um some plans for um the spring
0:20
game I guess or the spring day whatever you want to call it have been released so we'll talk about that some flag football volleyball soccer some
0:27
different things and Nebraska basketball we'll touch on the Huskers um the men's team the women's team and everything
0:32
that's happening here ahead of March Madness so before we get into all that stuff um please hit the like button hit
0:37
the Subscribe button get into the comment section and Danny how are you doing on this Friday morning I'm doing
0:42
good it's a little windy here so a little chilly but I'm doing good spring is uh spring is coming and daylight savings time is this weekend so more
0:50
sunlight so I'm fired up and uh being uh being busy you know especially with all
0:55
this Husker sports news yeah so um I guess to start you
1:00
know there's a lot of things kind of toh cover but I think the most thing I want to cover first is CJ brona who we talked
1:07
about here recently you know with Oregon getting into the mix um his ranking has gone up a lot um recently and it went up
1:13
even more um 247 Sports um did an update first on three did their update and they
1:19
moved him into like the top 150 um and then 247 sports did an update recently
1:25
and they moved him up all the way to number 71 overall um he according to 27 Sports um 247 Sports excuse me is the
1:33
seventh ranked cornerback now in the 2026 class um the eighth best player in the State of Florida and according to
1:39
the composite rankings he's 128th overall so that's obviously a positive thing to see you know his rankings jump
1:46
up so high but then Tom ly had an article for 247 Sports where he was updating the recruitment of everybody in
1:52
the top 24 the top 247 their top 247 players and in his little blur about CJ
1:58
brona there was um he said that he potentially could take visits to Penn State to Oregon to Texas A&M and that
2:06
Miami has also just offered and they're obviously very close he's a Florida kid so another program to potentially worry
2:12
about so some good things with CJ bronin that he's you know really improving his ranking but also you know are you
2:18
worried about his commitment now that some other programs are coming after him and giving in on campus for visits we kind of always talk about how you know
2:25
don't worry about a flip until some visits are happening well it seems like some visits are going to happen here with CJ brona
2:30
I mean yeah I think there's always a concern especially in today's you know era where you know players can not only
2:36
commit to teams but also you know the difficulty of retaining players so I think you know losing a player is always
2:42
a concern in in you know college football and it's good to see CJ get the recognition for sure I mean I and it
2:49
just goes to show that uh this coaching staff continues to be pretty solid
2:54
evaluators when it comes to diamond in the rough talent because you know CJ's
2:59
rankings exploded like you mentioned and now he's getting interest from you know
3:05
programs like Miami the bigger programs in the State of Florida so I think there is reason for a little bit of concern um
3:13
you know I would honestly kind of find it strange if other schools didn't reach out to him uh because he is extremely
3:19
talented but you know we'll we'll have to wait and see what happens but it's definitely noteworthy I'd say that U
3:26
some of the bigger programs are really starting to kind of you know close in on
3:31
him yeah definitely it's um you know not surprising I'm surprised he didn't have a bigger offer list to begin with I mean
3:38
when he committed um you know I thought then this is going to be or should be a four-star quarterback I mean you look at
3:44
the fact that he runs the 10 um the 100 meter dash in 103 I mean that's you know pretty incredible and he's especially
3:51
because he's 61 as well so he's not you know he's not like 5'10 I mean so he's 6'1 um 166 PBS and that I don't know how
3:58
accurate that is I mean sometimes those weights you know aren't updated that much so I'm not sure about that but he
4:04
had like six interceptions in seven games so I mean the fact that he's got ball skills um he's got size he's got
4:11
speed I mean those are you know that's those if you were going to you know take the things that you want in an NFL
4:16
quarterback that's it so like this guy has a bright ass future and I think I said last week that he might end up
4:21
being one of the top ranked quarterbacks in this class and Bam there he is he's in he's essentially 247 has him in the
4:27
top 10 so like this would be a huge get for Nebraska if they could they can hang on to him and the good news is that they
4:34
do have him scheduled for an official visit right now so the only official visit that CJ brona has scheduled right
4:39
now is for Nebraska um so I think that that's a positive thing you know the Miami worries me a little bit on the
4:46
fact that Oregon just offered him and he could potentially take a visit there because you know Miami and Oregon are
4:51
going to play nil game the the nil game Texas A&M to I'm not saying that Nebraska can't and they shown that they
4:57
have been able to but you know that always worries me especially for a kid who's from Florida but um Nebraska's got
5:03
you know obviously you know Philip Simpson on this coaching staff and they've done a nice job there um they have a lot of Florida players on this
5:09
team so um hopefully they can hang on to that commitment but yeah definitely a
5:14
little bit worrisome which you know so so come kind of mixed emotions I guess seeing him jump up in the rankings and
5:21
you know it's uh just frustrating when Nebraska you know evaluates those players and then you know other programs
5:26
kind of try to swoop in but it is what it is see the thing about Nebraska's nil game and everybody else's nil game is
5:33
that where is that we're a little bit behind I mean Miami and Oregon have been playing the nil game for years and so
5:40
they're a little bit more experienced at it and they also I think have larger checkbooks when it comes to nil I mean
5:46
they know what they're doing when it comes to this and you know they know you know the hurricanes have put together
5:52
you know multiple solid recruiting classes it hasn't shown on the field yet but um you know Oregon and Miami H have
5:59
have you know large checkbooks and are good recruiters so there's definitely a cause for concern when you have programs
6:05
like those uh popping up yeah and I guess the other thing that you know kind
6:11
of struck me I guess just looking I was scrolling through the the list of Tom ly which I was referencing in 247 and you
6:18
know I just didn't I didn't see Nebraska's name mentioned very much um with a lot of those players so I mean I
6:23
don't know if that's still kind of a you know commentary on where Nebraska is in terms of recruiting cuz it does
6:30
seem like they still you know they compete for a lot of guys you know a lot of the elite players but it doesn't seem like they're really a true Contender you
6:36
know I mean Matt lwig was there and you know they they got a crystal ball for him and then that just fell by the
6:42
wayside Jackson can't well kind of the same thing so I mean I I like where they're going um in this 2026 class but
6:49
you know I would like to see them get involved maybe with a few more high-profile players but maybe that's just you know not within their reach at
6:56
this point I think we'll see a little bit more stuff like that this summer I honestly do they have a ton of visits
7:01
setup for you know the 2026 class and even the 2027 class so I think you'll see their name mentioned in these types
7:07
of Articles more this summer yeah for sure and I mean I do like um a lot of the visitors that they've got coming in
7:13
this summer but just like looking kind of scanning through um you know I've got
7:19
Ryan Mosley who's a blue chipper just even um Stephen Walker Camden Jensen
7:25
this is according to the on three rankings um Deacon SCH
7:31
smid and let's see so I mean like that's like four Jabari Brady brona so I mean
7:38
like they've got like six Blue Chip guys coming in for visits um I just think they need more I think they need to do a
7:44
little bit more work in this class um they just they they they are catching up but they still they just feel a little
7:50
bit behind in this class compared to like some other teams so I don't know I'm I think that they're they're doing a
7:56
good job I think that's probably also a reflection of you know like matat rule said the probably only going to be taking you know 15 to 20 kids I don't
8:02
think they're going to be signing 25 30 kids anymore so that's probably another reason why the visit list maybe isn't as
8:08
packed as it usually has been I think you're going to see a lot of transfer portal names because teams have figured out that if that you can build through
8:14
the transfer portal and have immediate success and I think it goes back to what we've talked about before with
8:20
developing I mean the development of high school kids is taking a a different
8:26
turn than in recent years you don't necessarily have time to develop a kid for three to four years you want to win
8:32
and you want to win now and teams are doing that so I think Matt Ru is taking more with transer portal approach which
8:38
hey if that works then so be it um one guy I'm keeping an eye on for official visits Kelvin obot Nebraska was I think
8:46
made his top 12 or top 10 something like that recently but um hasn't they haven't gotten an official visit from him yet
8:52
the the kid from Fruitland Idaho but really one of the kind of the fastest risers in this 2025 class or 2026 class
8:59
excuse excuse me and um if you're looking at an elite tackle that Nebraska could try to get they've missed on quite a few the past few classes but this
9:05
might be the guy in 2026 so I know Rex Waterman's out there too um but there's
9:10
obviously I think they would like to get more than one and that's kind of the next um official visit you know I'm
9:16
looking I know they got Deacon Schmidt too and some other um Hayden anworth is another guy who just reclassified a
9:22
offensive tackle that they're um interested in um but Kelvin obot man seems like a big-time player that they
9:27
might have a chance to actually land like think he's un ungettable yeah and I and he's a really
9:33
really good player so that would be a huge get he's talked highly about Nebraska in the past and um I do think
9:39
Nebraska sits sits in a good spot for him and we'll just have to see how things play out but you know Kevin obot
9:46
is a name that I would definitely be watching um all right another uh football issue we'll wrap up the
9:51
recruiting part here we do that a little earlier this week but uh some spring day I don't know about spring game plans I
9:57
guess it's um of kind of a replacement for the Nebraska football spring game but we knew there wasn't going to be you
10:03
know an 11on 11 game um but Nebraska announced on Thursday that they're going to do what's called like Fan Day
10:10
Nebraska fan day and so there's going to be um a seven on seven football game some skills competition going to be kind
10:16
of like the Pro Bowl I think oh miss did some similar things to this last year which is which is fine I don't have a
10:21
huge problem with that the volleyball team is actually going to have a spring match which they're allowed to I mean
10:27
Nebraska could actually hold a spring game they could play if they wanted to they could play like you know an FCS
10:33
team or an FBS team if they want you're allowed one spring I think actually two I think they could play two games if they wanted to um in the spring Nobody
10:40
Does that which um on another Point I've said why not play FCS teams in the spring why not have a one game you know
10:46
go play have Nebraska like play Montana have have Montana come to Nebraska for us for a game in the spring that doesn't
10:52
count in the schedule it can be like a true preseason game but it could be a competitive game for both teams you'd
10:57
make money your players would get better um so I don't know I've always thought that maybe that would be something that teams should start doing um but at any
11:04
rate Nebraska will be playing Kansas and volleyball um the sock women's soccer team will be playing Wyoming and uh
11:10
there'll be a little seven on seven football so what do you think about you know this new kind of spring day Nebraska has planned I know it's not
11:17
what a lot of fans want wanted to have happen but I don't mind it I mean I think it's still is an opportunity for
11:24
the fans to get out and see the teams and support the teams and bring the fans together um
11:30
and it'll give you know people a chance to see maybe some of the younger guys play in like a one-on-one type of
11:37
setting and so I know it's not you know what everybody's used to but I personally don't mind this and what
11:43
they've come up with yeah I think it'll be a good idea and I think it's going to be a chance for the volleyball team to
11:50
kind of showcase itself we know how popular that team is and um I think this
11:55
is a really good idea to play like another um you know powerful four power five whatever you want to say it in
12:00
volleyball opponent um you know the fans will will pack the house for that matchup and I'm sure they'll pack the
12:06
house for you know flag football too so I think it's a good idea um you know I still like at the end of the day I don't
12:14
I don't necessarily think that like Nebraska is going to be safer from having their players poached because
12:19
they're not having this game like I don't think I honestly don't think that matters to be honest um but I can
12:25
understand it from an injury perspective you know like other teams are getting rid of the spring game but I don't know I think it's a little overthought but at
12:31
the same time like I don't think it's a big deal like either way I mean we lost Blood blle Hill last spring game and
12:39
Demetrius Bell so I mean injuries too I think we're a big part of this and um
12:45
yeah I mean I don't think it's a big deal either way you know you're seeing a bunch of teams do it uh now and so um
12:52
it'll be interesting to see you know what the future of a spring game is for
12:57
college football moving forward yeah it will be interesting I mean I I get the injury part of it but
13:03
at the same time you know Michigan lost one of their best players during spring practice last year Rod Moore um so it's
13:09
like you know you can suffer an injury literally you know in practice so I mean I I get it from an injury perspective
13:15
but you know the same thing could happen in spring in the spring ball practice I mean somebody could tear their AC I mean
13:20
you know what I mean so like I don't know I I I do get it but honestly I do
13:25
wish that teams would just wake up and be like hey instead of playing the these meaningless games in August like why
13:31
don't we play a meaningless game in the spring and everybody could get better and improve you know like you could have
13:36
meaningless game in August could be your ticket to the college football playoff yeah I mean I guess but that's
13:43
that's that's the whole reason why we backed out of Tennessee and why so many fans are complaining but it's the truth yeah I mean I think the end of the
13:51
day you still have to win your conference games I mean that's how you get to the playoff because you know like
13:57
you still have to have some quality wins I mean you look at I mean Indiana barely made it last year
14:03
because and they were 11- one and you know it's because they just didn't have really many quality wins like we were
14:09
one of their better wins last season so I mean I get the I get the point of it and I get the point that you're making
14:14
but um I just think that teams could open up another stream of Revenue if they played you know play 11 game play
14:21
11 games in the fall play a game in the spring and sell tickets to it and you know I just think it would I think it
14:27
would be a good idea but you know whatever people college football uh the people who run college football don't
14:33
like good ideas so you know in any way at any rate be interested to see where the talks for the extra playoff spot for
14:39
the Big 10 and ACC go and if that actually ends up happening because if the Big 10 gets another playoff spot then then it'll be interesting to see
14:45
what the schedules are like yeah um it will be I mean that is still I think I think if they go that
14:52
direction I think they're going to do that stupid thing probably with the conference championships where you know
14:57
it's like a play in tournament type deal you know where you basically have to finish in the top six in your conference
15:02
so I mean at that you know at that point the non-conference games really aren't going to matter so it's going to be this
15:07
it's basically going to be based all on your Big 10 standings like I I don't even know why they're playing non like
15:13
if that's how we're going to decide this if it's going to be okay four big 10 teams make it and it's the top six teams
15:19
in the Big 10 like why in the world would you ever play a game outside of that your conference that matters like
15:24
it just doesn't make any sense I guess if you because if you lost that game you know you could still be considered for
15:30
an at large like if you're the fifth place team and I guess in that scenario you know because there would be you know
15:36
two or three there's not that many large bursts available so I mean I guess it would be nice to have like a win over Tennessee on your resume if you're going
15:42
up against like you know a Notre Dame or somebody from the SEC for that last at large birth but the reality is I mean
15:49
it's going to be tough I think for the Big 10 to ever get five teams in I mean that's a lot that's a in a 14 team
15:54
playoff five teams so I just don't see I think the teams that win in the conference are going to makeing make the
16:00
playoff I mean unless that fifth team's like Ohio State you know what I mean like I just I just really have a hard
16:05
time seeing that team really making the playoffs so I mean you're probably are right in the sense that like if it's not a big 10 game like why would you
16:12
schedule an SEC opponent or something like I just don't really see the benefit of it or the upside of it they they
16:19
should probably just go they should probably just play like 10 big 10 games that's what honestly they should do every conference should just play 10
16:25
games and they should have like one or two non-conference games and just quit with all these meaningless stupid buy
16:31
games I just I'm just so sick of it and I like I get the point of it but there's game like there's there's way too many
16:37
college football games that just like there's no reason to pay attention to it like if it's Georgia against stedson or
16:42
somebody like yeah maybe that team will hang around for a little while but there's I mean on an actual Saturday like how many competitive games are we
16:49
really having and there's a lot of these games that I just feel like could go by the wayside and I think that's what
16:54
people like Nick Sabin and stuff have talked about like let's get teams in a league whether it's 80 teams 60 teams
17:00
whatever and let's have them play each other I'm so sick of watching Alabama play Southeastern Middle Tennessee State
17:05
or even Nebraska played like UTEP why like it's just I mean we tune in and we
17:10
watch it and we see I gonna say it's easy for Nick Sabin to say that now I
17:15
mean he was he was saying it no he was saying that when he was the head coach Alabama he was saying that so he still
17:20
played him and you best believe if you wanted to change a game on the schedule he he could have gotten a ton well no I
17:27
just me like yeah I mean he was scheduling the way that everybody else was but he was saying that those games
17:32
shouldn't happen that he his point was like we it should be an NFL type system and I agree they need to get rid of
17:38
these games with you know Nebraska and Ball State like just no just get rid of
17:43
that crap call it the preseason play those games in the spring but like by the time the real season starts like
17:49
let's have real football games like all 12 games and I'm sorry but Nebraska against Northern Iowa it just is not a
17:55
real football game like I have to get myself like psyched up for it because like yeah I mean yeah Northern Iowa
18:00
maybe we'll win one out of a hundred times but like let's get that crap off the schedule let's get actual real
18:06
competitive games every single week and that's I what I think college football needs to do although you take Northern
18:12
Iowa and UTP off the schedule last year we don't a ball game so I don't know yeah I know but that but like you know
18:18
get better I mean yeah I mean yeah but you gotta play the games that that are on
18:25
the schedule and they won those so I mean I I I definely see both sides and
18:30
you know at the end of the day I mean those two games for example did help Nebraska but I do think you know these
18:37
these out of conference games if they're not you know tough games so to speak are a little bit
18:43
meaningless yeah and then it would be you know it'd be different um obviously because you'd have a lot more teams with
18:48
losing records if you were only playing within power conferences so I mean you'd have mention these schedules arm me year in advance actually yeah that was a
18:56
whole gripe about Tennessee yeah that was interesting with Tennessee and um you know I don't have a problem
19:03
with them canceling that game I know a lot of people do but um whatever it's I
19:08
just wish that you know if we're going to decide things with just big 10 teams like let's just play the Big 10 games
19:14
and let's just go from there and let's just really you know because that's the only thing I have a problem with in this system is that you know a nine game
19:21
schedule for you know Penn State and for Nebraska can look very vastly different
19:26
in this conference and we saw that last season and you know Penn State and Oregon like they were good teams but
19:31
they also had two of the most favorable schedules I mean so like that's part of the reason they made it there like Penn
19:37
State didn't have to play a lot of the more difficult they didn't have to play Oregon they got to they played Ohio
19:42
State at home they avoided Michigan they avoided Nebraska like so I feel like
19:48
just the way that this system works it it almost seems like the the uh
19:53
the people who put out the schedules are determining so much of what's happening because that is such a huge factor and and goes where well I feel like a game
20:01
for 2027 shouldn't be decided in 2020 I feel like future scheduling
20:08
schedule's too far out almost yeah I mean with the the non-conference ones it can get a little
20:14
bit um you know complicated with all the scheduling but but anyway Let's uh switch over to uh some basketball talk
20:21
now it was a difficult another uh tough game for the Huskers four losses in a row now for the men's basketball team um
20:28
Bryce Williams breaks the program record for points but misses a free throw with 8 seconds left to give Nebraska a lead
20:35
which probably gives them the win I mean maybe things play out differently you know if he makes that free throw um but
20:41
yeah that was that was a tough one and then to get up by five points in overtime and lose the officials were terrible I mean I don't know what else
20:47
to say the Big 10 absolutely blew this there was just numerous calls um ant rght actually did a breakdown in the
20:54
last like five minutes I think there was 16 Miss calls he counted um that gone in Nebraska's favor but there was a few
21:01
that really bothered me one which I thought was blatant I don't know how the refs they they just chose not to call it
21:08
because they saw it but when um Andrew Morgan got the and one to essentially
21:13
tie up the game the Ohio State player slammed the ball twice right in front of the referee that's a clear technical foul you cannot slam the ball like that
21:20
after getting called for a foul and he did it twice and they decided not to call the technical foul I believe this
21:26
was the same guy who blocked um Conor Sean shot and then flexed over him literally flexed over Conor asan and no
21:33
technical foul and then Bryce Williams gets called for a flag flagrant one on a
21:38
basketball play I mean that was the most egregious call I think I've ever seen in my life like literally I think that's
21:44
one of the worst basketball calls I've ever seen I mean Bryce Williams they minimal contact with the guy's face and
21:51
if you go back to the last play of the first half Bryce Williams gets hit in the face and there's no call there's no review and that play I'm still like that
21:58
play where they gave him a flagrant one it was a Ohio state was up two at that point then they were up six and so you
22:05
gave Ohio state two points and a free possession in a game that ended up going to double overtime like it's just it's
22:11
really frustrating that you know that the Huskers just get screwed and I know it sounds like sour grapes but it's true
22:17
whether it's football or basketball they do not get a fair shake from the officials and I just I don't know what to do about it anymore like I don't know
22:23
what Nebraska can do about it but it's [ __ ] and I'm so sick of it I'm sick of getting robbed and Bryce Williams got
22:29
robbed the other night now we should have made that free throw but he got screwed by the refs and they're the reason the refs are the reason
22:34
Nebraska's probably going to miss the NCA tournament now and I I hate to say that like they had their moments and they could have played better but there
22:40
was just so many Miss calls from those officials and it's hard to overcome that stuff it is but losing the last three in
22:47
a row plus losing you know what was it six in a row at one point are the reason they're going to miss the NCA tournament
22:53
I mean let's be honest here this team even though several metrics say they've over they they've
23:00
disappointed and you know the officiating was terrible against Ohio
23:05
State there were obvious you know non- calls and you know Miss calls but at the
23:11
end of the day this team is the reason why they're missing the tournament yeah I mean I agree with that
23:19
but like take care of business against Iowa and take care of business against um USC and I think you're good to go
23:28
yeah I mean probably yeah but at the same time like if you win that game in Columbus I think you know you win you
23:34
win Saturday in Iowa then you're probably or I mean Sunday against Iowa then you're probably in a good spot yeah
23:39
so I mean I get it and Iowa state is gonna get in because of that game so like that's the frustrating thing um but
23:46
yeah they they and it's yeah Bryce Williams missed a game-winning free throw I mean like that's it's hard to
23:51
rectify that and then the other thing that drove me crazy is they get up by five points and then Fred hyberg starts to stop calling offense with three
23:58
minutes left in overtime like I hate when coaches do that like you do not
24:03
have a big enough lead to do that and then your offense completely shuts they didn't they did not have a good offensive possession for the rest of
24:08
that overtime no and it was like You Came don't I hate when coaches are like oh we're up by Five Points let just
24:14
dribble the ball at the top of the key no man you needed hoops and then Bryce Williams has a turnover because
24:19
everybody's standing around watching him because you have no offense being run and it's everybody knows that Bryce
24:25
Williams is the entire offense and team are planning for that now and it's
24:30
showing that we have no offense and then the other thing I mean not to belay the officials again but like Sam hyberg got
24:37
called for some BS calls and he fouled out way too early same with Andrew Morgan like they just were like oh well
24:42
we'll just keep fouling guys out I mean just the stuff that they were getting free throws for that Nebraska wasn't was
24:48
driving me absolutely Bonkers and I mean like I don't know I try not to complain about the officiating and yes Nebraska
24:54
could have they were up by five they had the free throw to win the game they had the lead against Minnesota and they
25:00
couldn't you know get the stop in the last possession so there's a lot of frustrating things
25:06
um but uh the officiating I guess for me it's just the fact that it seems to happen just constantly to this team I
25:12
mean whether it's you look at the Purdue basketball game you look at all the stuff that happens with the football team it's just like why Purdue from two
25:20
years ago yeah Purdue from two years ago yeah um and yeah it's just
25:26
like I don't I just I don't know how these big 10 officials continue to to uh
25:31
it seems like you know I I I guess I'm trying to find the right word but it just seems
25:37
like more and more bad calls happen against Nebraska than any other team now probably if you went and asked other
25:43
fans they probably say the same things I think everybody universally hates Big 10 officiating but there was just some really on yeah yeah some really
25:51
egregious calls but it any rate um as it stands now Iowa lost to Michigan State last night but I I don't think that
25:56
matters because they beat us they will have the season sweep so they'd have the same record so I still I think Nebraska
26:03
still needs to win on Sunday to get into the Big 10 tournament um and uh at the
26:08
very I know that they'll be clinched if they can do that and so in terms of what they would need to do to make the tournament they have to beat Iowa and
26:15
then I think they probably need to win at least two games in the Big 10 tournament maybe three so that that
26:21
means if you're in the first round game that means reaching the semifinals and that might be what it takes to for this
26:27
team to get to two the NCA tournament so they're probably going to have to win four games in a row if you win four
26:33
games in a row from here then you're you would have 21 wins and your overall Big 10 record between the regular season and
26:39
tournament would be 12 and 13 and in that scenario you probably could get into the NCA tournament and the five or
26:47
six squad one wins would definitely help with that too when you're looking at rumes at that point um but yeah no it's
26:53
going to be an uphill Road for Nebraska basketball with the next couple days um
26:59
I thought they played much better against Ohio State but I'm not sure if they can get the job done against Iowa
27:06
you know I think Iowa was a very good shooting team and again you know they struggle to defend from Beyond The Ark
27:14
so we'll see what happens but they definitely have an uphill battle and what's been a very Roller Coaster
27:20
season yeah it's definitely [Music] um the the three-point shooting is going
27:26
to be the thing and they need to they need to readjust their defense like I in my opinion or at least they need to
27:31
recruit better athletes because that's been the you know the problem this season is they just you know I mean guys
27:36
that were supposed to come in and be good Defenders you know Raley woster um you know Braxton may they just haven't
27:43
been they just have not I mean yeah well Gavin Griffith has been a total disappointment so I mean hopefully he
27:48
can have some type of impact next season but but yeah I mean the guys that were brought in to help play defense haven't
27:54
been very good at defense yeah and you know it makes me wonder what the transfer portal strategy
28:01
is going to be for next season because they need to hit pretty well on a lot of guys and they have a solid kind of base
28:08
with berky Connor uh rink Mast is coming back I think rink would have made a
28:14
tremendous difference on this team um but you know they need to make sure they fell at the rest of the roster
28:20
correctly yeah I think it's um they really they really need support from 1890 they really do that's that's how
28:26
they're gonna I mean you look at even just last year they were in it for a lot of guys and where they you know they ended up going to UCLA and Michigan
28:33
State I mean you know if you had William Kyle and Frankie Fiddler that would help that would help a lot on this roster so
28:39
Frankie fidler would have been nice you know and I mean and I think it comes down to nil I'm a lot of it and so you
28:45
know if you want to be a team that's in the tournament every year if you want to compete near the top of the Big 10 you're going to have to do what the
28:52
football team did and so I'm hoping that Troy Dannon being here for a year will help with that they're in a better spot
28:58
for that but yeah I mean that's just how that's how it works I mean you know we've talked about high school recruiting a lot but like it's it's just
29:06
not it's just not in the cards really for Nebraska to build a program that way or anybody I mean honestly like it's
29:11
really hard to build a program with high school recruiting Because the thing about it is like okay you're going to get a fstar recruit well you know what
29:19
like in basketball those guys aren't ready very much you know like some of them are you know like the kid at Duke
29:24
you know like the the the elite ones yeah but but like a lot of these kids who ranked like 20 to 40 like they're
29:31
not ready to play college basketball you know at least like yeah they can score and dribble and yada yada y but they get
29:37
lost on defense they turn the ball over too much and so it's like you're actually with some of these guy you know
29:42
you get a five-star recruit and it's like okay well he's kind of a net negative the first year because they can't play defense you know they don't
29:49
shoot the ball that well they shoot a lot of them shoot low percentages because they're used to jacking up a bunch of bad shots in their aou team or
29:55
whatever and then you know by the after their fresh freshman season they're not really ready and then they end up going
30:00
to the draft before they could even be a valuable player which they would be their sophomore year so it's kind of like you know High School recruiting is
30:07
a very if you can get guys in the that aren't like guaranteed you know like they did a good job with you know Nick
30:13
Janowski because he's not you know like a five-star guy and didn't really have that expectation of playing this year
30:18
and hopefully he can step in next year and play over the next few years like I think that's the kind of player you need
30:24
to get but it's it's really hard to find the difference makers in high school
30:30
recruiting you know and and I think Nebraska's GNA have to find those guys in the portal they did a great job with Bryce Williams I mean nobody nobody else
30:36
really wanted Bryce Williams and I think you know Fred's eye for talent and you know his ability to you know improve
30:42
players as a coach I think will help Nebraska get players but you know if you're constantly getting if you can
30:48
only get guys from you know the Missouri Valley and Conference you know if you're constantly raiding these mid- Majors for
30:55
players I just don't know that that's going to work out great for you and so I think that they really have to ramp up
31:01
nil and you know find a few difference makers in the portal that's the only way it's going going to really matter
31:08
whatever the case may be they need a point guard desperately I don't care how they get it impact high school player
31:14
transportal player but they've needed a point guard for quite a while now because Aaron Ulus didn't is not really
31:21
working out the way we thought he would initially so I think a point guard is top on the priority list yeah rywood
31:27
Boer didn't work out either um you know I thought he was going to play a lot better and he's been fine but you know
31:33
the fact that they've been shuffling lineups and all that different stuff you know with hyberg and yeah you know it's
31:38
just he he hasn't been he's been a major disappointment I think he's I think Raley luer has probably been the biggest
31:43
disappointment of all the transfer portal editions to be honest with you because he was supposed to lock down that point guard position and was
31:50
supposed to be like a plus Defender and a guy that was like a playmaker and that just hasn't you know that he he just
31:55
hasn't lived up to that so see I say Gavin Griffith because there's been more times when he's been sitting on the
32:00
bench and I thought he was a student team manager than than than you know uh
32:06
impact you know player but booster is a close second but for me it's G it's
32:11
Griffith because he's been nonexistent I'd say probably you know 90% of the
32:18
time yeah I mean yeah I agree with that um just yeah but it it's the the portal
32:26
hasn't you know hasn't delivered you know as well I mean berky's had some good moments but he's also been hurt um
32:32
you know Braxton May has not been like apparently he just cannot score around the basket like I don't know what it is
32:38
with guy mind he's so tall I don't know or rebound he struggles with rebounding sometimes too I mean he had a few he had
32:44
a few nice games I mean he had a nice game against Northwestern but uh you know just has been State too yeah yeah
32:50
far and um you know in between but anyway um we'll see what happens the
32:56
Women's Basketball team you know as Roland they've got a couple of nice wins now they beat ruter um beat Illinois on
33:03
Thursday night 17 points from Britt Prince so they're going to the big 10 quarterfinals um today I'm blanking on
33:09
who they're um matching up I want to say UCLA I want to say that's that's who it's going to be um as the number two
33:16
seed um or no I'm trying yeah that would be who it's yeah quarterfinals yeah I
33:22
would be UCLA today so I mean that's going to be a difficult matchup um for Nebraska obviously but uh
33:28
it's it's a great to see Amy Williams team get a couple of wins and against teams that are going to be um I guess
33:33
ruter not but Illinois was a definitely team that's in the tournament so they've improved their their seed and um I would
33:39
be shocked if they didn't get like at least one of the one of the last buys they shouldn't be a first four team
33:45
after winning these last couple of games I love Amy Williams as a coach I really do uh I feel like she's very well
33:51
prepared she you know know the team knows what she expects and they're
33:56
playing to how she wants them to and I think she's a very solid coach and I'm glad she got the extension last March
34:03
and um I'm very excited to see where this team goes and uh hopefully at least
34:09
one Husker basketball team will be playing deep into March yeah hopefully B uh they've got a chance especially with
34:15
um you know the way that Alexa marowski is playing lately like she definitely doesn't want her college career to end
34:21
and Brit Prince is kind of coming on I wish I wish they had Natalie pots so bad I wish they had Natalie and um
34:28
Allison waiter too but but Natalie pots like I think she could have been an all big 10 you know performer this year so
34:34
um at any rate I wish um you know they they were full strength because it would have been fun to see what they could do
34:40
but it is fun to to see this team and they they shoot the ball really well I mean Logan nissle Brit Prince was three
34:46
for three yesterday marowski can hit the three so when you can do that man like you got a shot and um they almost they
34:52
almost won the championship last year so we'll see if they can pull off an upset today um look looking at uh some now
34:59
baseball and softball stuff you know it's been a fun start for the softball team baseball not so much it's been a
35:05
bit of a struggle four and six overall and then of course um got a kick in the
35:10
groin this week as a preseason all big 10 pitcher in the Ace Mason mccon is out
35:16
for the season with an arm injury so that was a blow yeah looks like
35:22
essentially what they're going to be doing is uh Tyler Horn's going to take over the number one spot and then they'll have will Walsh and Jackson
35:28
Brockett essentially so it's going to be um you know kind of
35:34
a you know peace meal rotation the bullpen you know is going to be you know taking a hit as well so um yeah I mean
35:41
it's just the offense is going to have to step up and that's hasn't been a strong suit yet but they do open Big 10
35:47
play this weekend they're four- six opening up against Washington in a three-game set um it's actually going to be a double header on Saturday and then
35:53
the one game on Sunday because of weather issues and there was the home home opener against Omaha I think this
35:58
week was canceled so this is actually the home opener for Nebraska baseball uh Ty horn will be on the mound and
36:04
hopefully they can get some positive momentum with big p uh Big 10 Play Starting yeah they definitely need to I
36:10
mean the mccon injury is is devastating for the season you know this was a guy who had 92 strikeouts last year and he
36:18
struggled a little bit to begin the year but you could tell that there were some really good things but he probably just
36:23
work out and he'd be fine so it'll be interesting to see how the the rest of this s does but the bats do need to get
36:30
going um they've really really kind of struggled and that's forced the pitching
36:35
to be almost spectacular at times and and it's just a tough situation so we'll
36:41
see how things go but um you know I think uh definitely rough sedding early
36:46
for Nebraska baseball on multiple fronts um and it should be know I mean they did have a tough schedule I mean like UC
36:53
Irvine was ranked LSU was ranked Kansas State's a pretty good team so you know they it just um it would be nice to see
36:59
them start off well in the non-conference which they haven't done the past couple of years but uh it's they're going to have to get it done in
37:05
Big 10 play so um hopefully they can start off you know winning a series against Washington that's that's kind of
37:11
the first step just get a series win get two out of three and then you can move forward from there um the softball team
37:17
is 15- six they're also making their home debut um on Saturday against
37:22
Northern Iowa so nothing like too uh not too big of an opponent there but um
37:27
they've been rolling obviously behind Jordy ball the offense has been playing really well um so yeah I like where the
37:34
the softball team's headed hopefully the baseball team can uh start getting some wins but um Northern Iowa Northern
37:40
Colorado at home um let's see I think
37:46
that's all they're and then they're playing the same teams looks like on or they're playing Northern Iowa and South Dakota State on Sunday they'll open Big
37:52
10 play next weekend at Ohio State so in terms of the softball update that's
37:58
where it stands yeah so softball team I know softball team has been
38:03
disappointing to some fans in some situations but by and large I think they're pretty steady baseball team
38:08
still trying to find their way so um even still I think Good Seasons ahead
38:14
for for both teams um they just need to kind of um get a little bit more
38:19
stabilized in some areas but I think they'll be okay and it is a different uh League you know with UCLA especially UCL
38:27
has always been a really strong baseball team so um yeah yeah so it's going to be
38:32
a little bit different um from that perspective you know winning the Big 10 it's going to mean a little bit more like it has in every sport I guess so um
38:39
yeah should be should be a fun uh spring I think for Nebraska fans getting to see some the Huskers at home this weekend
38:45
and uh we got Spring football starting pretty soon I want to say what like March 25th I think is uh when Spring
38:51
ball yeah I asked you the other day because I wasn't sure either uh you think it's March 25th
38:57
yeah according to Sean Callahan yes March 25th is when uh it's starting up soot good nuggets of
39:05
information I think or maybe that's that's a Saturday so probably um March 25th is a Tuesday oh yeah you're right
39:12
never mind I got my days mixed up so yeah that that sounds about right so um yeah so we'll uh we'll have that coming
39:18
up soon the Huskers will be hitting the field um there's already some positive rumbling so we'll be covering all that stuff uh so make sure you guys hit the
39:24
like button hit the Subscribe button and uh as always go big red go Big Red
