hey Husker fans welcome back to the
0:02
Husker big rade YouTube channel I'm
0:03
Chris Peterson and joining me as always
0:05
is my co-host Danny Gillette and we're
0:07
back for another episode of the podcast
0:09
this morning and we've got uh some
0:10
Nebraska basketball to talk about after
0:12
a rough weekend at Purdue um we also
0:14
have some key veteran players that
0:16
should be returning for the Nebraska
0:18
football team so we'll talk about that
0:20
some more transfer portal uh Intel some
0:22
more commitments potentially coming and
0:24
some other things there so we'll get to
0:25
all that in just a moment before we do
0:27
hit the like button hit the Subscribe
0:29
button get into the comment section and
0:31
Danny how are you doing on this Monday
0:32
morning I'm doing well I'm doing well
0:34
it's been a busy busy week or so but a
0:37
lot to get into but uh uh between
0:40
writing for the Patriots and their new
0:42
uh head coaching hire and Mike Vel and
0:45
Nebraska recruiting I've been pretty
0:47
busy yeah it has been a a busy time um
0:50
for the Huskers and you know with the
0:51
NFL coaching stuff is going to be
0:53
picking up here pretty soon um it does
0:55
feel like things are you know starting
0:57
to slow down with the transfer portal
0:58
and stuff like that um but let's lead
1:00
off with uh Nebraska basketball on
1:03
Sunday we'll start there um we'll get to
1:05
the football stuff here in a minute
1:06
that's just the most recent thing in my
1:08
mind and wow that was not what I
1:10
expected from Nebraska I didn't expect
1:12
them to win I didn't predict them to win
1:14
that game but I thought that they would
1:15
put up a lot more fight and to me you
1:17
know that was an example of when you
1:20
allow one loss to turn into two because
1:22
they still it seems like to me didn't
1:24
get off the mat from the Iowa game and
1:26
beyond that this three-point defense is
1:29
just atrocious we saw them have problems
1:31
with it last year and they kind of fixed
1:32
it but way way way too many wideopen
1:35
threes for Purdue yesterday yeah way too
1:38
many wide openen threes and I understand
1:40
Purdue on the road is a tough place to
1:42
play I believe the boiler makers you
1:44
know had W 19 games a row at home sounds
1:47
familiar like the Vault but um yeah it
1:50
was just uh you know a mess yesterday
1:52
and anytime Nebraska got any sort of
1:54
momentum Purdue would answer you know
1:56
like that and it was just it was just a
1:59
tough day you saw like you mentioned the
2:01
defensive leaks a little bit and the
2:04
defensive inconsistencies kind of rear
2:06
their ugly head and as you said it's
2:08
kind of been a theme over the past two
2:09
games we saw this a little bit last year
2:11
you know we saw this a little bit last
2:12
year and you know um thankfully last
2:16
year we had enough offense to combat it
2:18
but um today you know it seemed like
2:22
everything or Sunday excuse me it seemed
2:24
like everything was going in for Purdue
2:26
and quite honestly I think you could
2:28
pinpoint even the crat win as one where
2:31
kraton missed a lot of shots and could
2:33
have easily won that game as well so you
2:35
know you're kind of noticing an
2:37
interesting Trend here and not
2:39
necessarily a good one yeah and I think
2:41
when you look at um you know when I look
2:43
at the game yesterday there's two stats
2:45
that really stand out to me one is you
2:47
know obviously the fact that PR made 19
2:48
three-pointers on 33 attempts so over
2:52
50% of their attempts were from the
2:53
three-point line and they made
2:56
58 but the other stat that is really I
2:59
think shows how poorly Nebraska played
3:01
on defense is that Purdue made 41 field
3:03
goals and 32 of those were assisted so
3:06
that means that Nebraska and you can see
3:07
it watching the game but players I don't
3:09
know what in the world they were doing
3:11
but the the ball screen defense the last
3:13
couple of games especially has been god-
3:15
awful I mean these guys just have no
3:17
they're overh helping they're not being
3:18
disciplined they're getting beat to the
3:20
basket I mean that's part of the problem
3:21
is guys are getting beat and then
3:23
they're leaving open shots for other
3:24
players but like the the overh helping
3:27
and like I don't know what was going on
3:28
but like in the first you know maybe
3:30
five minutes of that game Purdue had
3:32
four or five wide openen shots and like
3:34
a wide open shot in college basketball
3:37
is different from like a high school
3:38
wide open shot but if you're not like if
3:40
that contest isn't where the guys faces
3:42
that's a wide open shot and that was
3:43
like almost all of Purdue shots
3:45
yesterday at least to start the game and
3:46
so to me it's just extremely
3:48
discouraging because it's like you
3:50
cannot go into you know West Lafayette
3:53
and and not play defense and expect to
3:55
hang around in that game like Purdue is
3:56
too good of a team they're one of the
3:58
best three-point shooting teams in the
3:59
the country they're like in the top 30
4:01
and like if you go in there and expect
4:03
them to miss like wide open shots that's
4:05
just not going to happen and so I don't
4:07
know the defense to me I don't know how
4:09
you go from you know being like one of
4:11
the top ranked in the in the kenpom and
4:13
then just to being terrible but they've
4:15
kind of always been this way with their
4:17
three-point defense I mean they give up
4:19
as many three-pointers as almost any
4:20
team in college basketball and you know
4:23
when you're when you're giving teams
4:24
that many open looks like they're going
4:25
to make them so I don't know what they
4:27
if they need to adjust a little bit but
4:29
yeah yeah the the defensive um
4:31
communication and the helping and just
4:33
all everything on defense was bad there
4:35
wasn't there wasn't a single good thing
4:36
on defense yesterday it was just
4:38
freaking terrible all around it was just
4:40
bad including the rebounds Purdue out
4:43
rebounded Nebraska by a 33 to2 margin
4:45
and some of those led to Second Chance
4:47
looks for a Purdue team that was that is
4:49
already a very good shooting team and
4:51
again you know this particular statistic
4:53
wasn't necessarily a huge Advantage but
4:55
Purdue won the turnover battle by a 10
4:57
to 17 margin Nebraska has 17 turnovers
5:00
so turnovers are something that I've
5:02
noticed the last couple games start to
5:03
pick up a little bit and this is also
5:05
something that they've had trouble with
5:07
you know in Fred Hoy brg's tenure so it
5:08
seemed like all the all the frustrating
5:11
Trends came out again on
5:12
Sunday and yeah so it's going to be
5:15
interesting to see where this team um is
5:17
projected you know with like
5:18
Bracketology and stuff I think they're
5:19
still going to be projected in the
5:21
tournament but the next I really look at
5:23
these next five games is being like
5:24
critical for Nebraska you've got ruter
5:26
at home Maryland on the road USC at home
5:29
um at Wisconsin and at Illinois and it's
5:32
like man you're two and three in the Big
5:33
10 right now like you got to find a way
5:35
to to win probably three of those five
5:38
just to get to five and five because I
5:41
still think this team has to win
5:42
probably 11 games to make the tournament
5:44
at least 10 at least 10 games and uh you
5:47
know if
5:48
you lay another egg here man like it's
5:51
it's going to be tough so these next
5:52
three games they've got to get at least
5:54
to out the next three you've got Ruckers
5:56
at home Maryland on the road us I mean
5:58
those are all three winnable but like
5:59
you have to win those two games at home
6:01
or this team's going to be in real
6:02
trouble and missing the NCA tournament
6:04
and that Maryland game is going to be
6:05
tough too and Maryland gave them a
6:07
challenge last season so um it's not
6:09
it's not going to be an easy stretch
6:10
here and this is going to be a real test
6:12
to see where this team is at I thought
6:14
they were better than what they've shown
6:15
lately maybe it's just a slump we we saw
6:18
that last year a little bit but um right
6:21
now is about the time to be getting into
6:22
a slump so we'll see what happens but it
6:24
seems like you know Michigan Michigan
6:27
State you know Purdue like those games
6:30
in particular are games that have kind
6:32
of made me wonder about this team and
6:34
you know like like we kind of alluded to
6:36
all the bad things that this team
6:38
struggles with came out on Sunday and
6:41
hopefully they can kind of you know kind
6:44
of you know regroup and get their get
6:47
their act together before it's too
6:50
late yeah they gota they got to figure
6:52
some things out def I'm just not sure if
6:54
the guys are just like being over
6:56
aggressive with with their helping and
6:58
their hedging but like they've got to
7:00
make some adjustments especially with
7:02
their ball screen defense I mean it has
7:03
just been terrible it's either been you
7:05
know like wide open three or layup
7:07
almost every time so um mean you look at
7:09
the schedule February I don't know looks
7:12
a little bit easier but you start off so
7:14
after those the five games I just talked
7:15
about then you've got your your West
7:17
Coast road trip to Oregon who's really
7:19
good and Washington which they're okay
7:22
but I mean that's a game that's probably
7:25
like a must-win game for Nebraska to
7:27
make the tournament then you've got Ohio
7:28
State and Maryland at home Northwestern
7:30
and Purdue or Penn State on the road and
7:32
then home against Michigan so you know
7:35
definitely some winnable games in
7:36
February but it's not there's not a lot
7:38
of winable games on the schedule so
7:40
really you know every everyone is
7:42
important and uh you can't you just
7:43
can't lay eggs like that that that's why
7:46
you know looking back at that Iowa game
7:48
you know you're up by 15 points and you
7:50
have a chance for a quad one win that's
7:51
why you have to win that game because
7:53
that Purdue game was always going to be
7:55
tough to win right I mean so like you
7:56
needed to find a way to win one of those
7:58
two and you it sitting right there and
8:00
then the defense I mean was the same
8:02
thing against Iowa I mean guys were just
8:03
getting wide open threes you know pton
8:05
San for had some wide open threes and
8:08
it's like that's the one guy in the Big
8:09
10 you don't leave wide open and that's
8:11
I could say the same thing about a lot
8:12
of produced guys so that part's been
8:15
frustrating and I think this team you
8:17
know is going to have to look it look
8:20
itself in the mirror a little bit before
8:21
ruter comes to town and hopefully you
8:23
know being back in the vault will kind
8:25
of get them going but they got to find
8:27
that they got to find that edge that
8:29
they against UCLA because they just they
8:32
had it for half about half the game
8:33
against Iowa and then I don't know what
8:35
happened to it but they have not I don't
8:36
know yeah I was mistified by that but um
8:41
I mean 104 points is is bad4 points is
8:45
bad they they scored what like 50 in the
8:48
half or close to 50 in the half um 59 in
8:51
the second half so I admittedly turned
8:53
it off you know halfway through the
8:55
second half but but I had to St I
8:57
started writing stuff I was like okay
8:59
well nothing's going to change here in
9:00
these last eight minutes but you know
9:03
like you said February is going to be a
9:04
crucial stretch for Nebraska and you
9:06
don't really want to go into February
9:08
with must-win games you want to go into
9:10
February kind of you know already
9:11
comfortable in the tournament a chance
9:13
to boost your resume and that could
9:15
still be true but now these games of
9:17
February take on a little bit of an
9:18
extra
9:19
meeting all right well let's shift to
9:21
some football talking um I'm trying to
9:24
think back I don't think we've had any
9:25
commitments since we did our last show
9:27
on Thursday but um Nebraska has had some
9:31
roster movement in the positive
9:32
direction and so one of those moves
9:34
Javin Wright um a linebacker who started
9:36
one game in each the past two seasons
9:38
got a seventh year of Eligibility so
9:40
he's going to be coming back for the
9:41
Huskers it also seems very likely that
9:43
DeShaun Singleton will be coming back
9:45
there's that whole Jo um Junior College
9:47
ruling so he started his career as a Joo
9:51
um that hasn't been announced yet but
9:52
sounds like according to Sean Callahan
9:54
and other reports it's just kind of you
9:56
know dotting the eyes crossing the teas
9:58
so if those guys do both come back and
10:01
starting with Javin Wright because we
10:02
know he's coming back after that's been
10:03
announced what what's the impact there
10:06
in the linebacker room and and how
10:07
excited are you for his return a lot of
10:10
people don't want you know old faces to
10:13
return I'm in that boat but Javin right
10:15
is a guy that I want back I mean when
10:18
you talk about the linebacker room and
10:20
how much young Talent there is you know
10:22
this gives them an opportunity to
10:23
develop because now you have veterans in
10:25
desan Malla you know Javin Wright Maris
10:28
Watson Trent you know guys that can kind
10:31
of make an impact in a sizable impact
10:33
while the younger guys develop and so
10:35
Javin Wright coming back is it's it's
10:38
huge and you know I I think even though
10:42
we have a crowded safety room with
10:44
younger players having Singleton come
10:46
back is also big uh Singleton has been
10:50
around the program obviously he's been
10:52
able to play at a high level and healthy
10:55
and you know again this gives more depth
10:57
for the safety and linebacker room and a
10:59
chance for the younger players to grow
11:01
uh and I do understand the sentiment
11:03
that people don't want you know the same
11:05
players back but I I think in this case
11:08
having these two back is important for a
11:11
young defensive unit yeah jabin wght is
11:14
interesting to me because you'll
11:15
remember or maybe some won't but he
11:17
started off as he played in that nickel
11:18
role that safety you know hybrid role
11:21
which is kind of interesting for a guy
11:22
who's 65 230 lbs so to me it's like I
11:26
know our linebacker room is not crowded
11:28
but you know pretty deep already but you
11:30
know he to me is a guy that can be that
11:32
nickel linebacker and you know you can
11:34
always use players like that and uh he
11:36
started two games over the last couple
11:38
years but he's played more than that he
11:40
was hurt some last year and I just feel
11:42
like he's going to be a solid guy that
11:43
can contribute and allow some of these
11:46
other guys you know Mulla and um you
11:49
know Dawson Meritt maybe that can allow
11:50
them to you know rush the passer a
11:52
little bit more instead of focusing on
11:53
coverage a little bit so to me it's just
11:56
another um you know another tool in the
11:58
toolkit for John Butler and another
12:00
really solid player and then looking at
12:02
Singleton on the back end to me you know
12:03
he would be you know immediate starter
12:06
again at safety you know along probably
12:08
with Buford and Malcolm harzog so I
12:11
think that's a huge addition that would
12:12
give Nebraska three kind of proven
12:14
safeties back there and um you know
12:17
because they kind of were trying to add
12:19
you know they added Justin Rhett you
12:20
know he's kind of try to be in the mix
12:22
there but I just think that Singleton
12:23
who's also pretty good in coverage would
12:25
be just a really solid um you know
12:27
addition for this second day and
12:30
probably probably as important as
12:31
anybody they got you know in the
12:33
transfer portal maybe maybe outside of
12:35
Andrew Marshall I think he's going to
12:36
have a pretty big impact but like if you
12:38
consider the four guys they added and
12:40
you throw deshan Singleton in that mix
12:41
like that's a pretty good haul for the
12:42
secondary coming back and when you think
12:45
of and when you think about um Wright
12:48
it's never been a lack of production
12:51
it's always been his health and don't
12:53
forget he had the blood clot issue a
12:55
couple years ago as well so there were
12:58
some serious question questions about
12:59
his health as well so I'm hoping he
13:01
stays healthy and you know can
13:03
contribute the entire season and he's
13:05
been you know unfairly bitten by the
13:07
injury bug so I'm excited to see him him
13:10
return and you know I I highlight him
13:13
because again Health has been the issue
13:16
it's never been about production or
13:17
wanting to play so I'm hoping he can
13:20
make it through next season
13:22
healthy and yeah just you know you need
13:25
um as as many quality experience play
13:29
that you can have on defense as possible
13:31
like I think that that's a good thing
13:33
and you know you look at that secondary
13:35
I mean this the starting lineup could
13:37
potentially be you know Singleton uh
13:39
Buford harzog at safety and then you're
13:42
looking at corner Sayer Wright I think
13:44
Andrew Marshall um you know those five
13:48
guys might be your starting five right
13:49
there with I mean the way Nebraska
13:51
played it last year they kind of had
13:53
that big nickel type defense as they're
13:55
they're kind of as a safety with their
13:57
third um defensive back or their
13:59
defensive back I should say yeah but
14:01
then also you know Jamir Khan in the mix
14:03
um so you know I like where they're at
14:06
in the secondary I think they've got a
14:08
lot of interesting pieces and youve got
14:10
some young guys there you know Mario
14:12
Buford marari Sanders cayb Benning
14:14
Donovan Jones all kind of in the mix
14:16
Jeremiah Charles so Larry Tarver I think
14:19
too right yeah Larry Tarver I mean so it
14:20
went from being you know we a couple
14:22
years ago seemed a little light and now
14:25
I feel like they're right where they
14:26
need to be in terms of you know
14:27
experience Talent they've got a lot of
14:29
nice pieces there so um at any rate
14:31
let's shift now to the transfer portal
14:34
and things have kind of slowed down a
14:36
little bit for Nebraska after um they
14:38
picked up Elijah pritchet last week the
14:40
tackle from Alabama um they've also
14:43
picked up some other guy some other
14:45
Defenders too Marcus um Groves kbu um
14:49
from Arizona which was I thought was
14:50
another nice pickup yeah so I mean yeah
14:52
Three Corner they've added three corners
14:54
and I like them all so I like all those
14:56
guys and I know some people are down on
14:59
on gr KW because he's played at multiple
15:00
places but like he started games for
15:02
Arizona last year I mean a lot of the
15:04
time he was their number three Corner
15:05
because they had a freshman come in that
15:06
was really good but but still I mean you
15:09
got a guy who's played you know hundreds
15:11
of snaps for a power four program like
15:13
that's that's nothing to scoff at
15:15
especially a guy who was ranked in the
15:16
top like 150 coming out of high school
15:19
and honestly who cares who gives a crap
15:21
as long as he doesn't cause issues with
15:23
his teammates and is respectful to the
15:25
coaches and you know doesn't cause a
15:27
scene or whatever who cares I don't care
15:29
if he's transferred to seven schools if
15:30
he's a good player and he can contribute
15:32
positively to the program I'm I'm happy
15:34
to have him in I know a lot of fans were
15:36
kind of down oh you're transed so much
15:38
who cares welcome to the new age of
15:39
college football just don't be a problem
15:41
and you know be respectful to the
15:43
coaching staff and you know I don't see
15:46
an issue I really don't yeah I'm not
15:48
worried about it either and it's not
15:50
like yeah I mean yeah he could be he
15:52
could be another he could be another
15:54
Sayer right type I mean he's got that
15:56
type of talent um so I'll take another
15:57
Sayer right type yeah
15:59
yeah I feel like the ceiling is is
16:01
pretty high with him and I feel like the
16:02
floor is pretty low because I mean if
16:04
the floor is what he did at Arizona last
16:06
year like that will be that will that
16:08
will play just fine in the Nebraska
16:09
secondary so I'm I'm I don't understand
16:12
the uh the negativity towards that
16:14
addition but it is what it is um there
16:18
is one one other player that we've kind
16:19
of been talking about shaaz Pete um from
16:22
New Mexico State my guy um that I've
16:24
been all over 68 320 pounds ranked
16:27
number 11th in the portal he's still
16:29
kind of in it with Nebraska he made
16:30
visits but it seems like Sean Kahan
16:33
saying he's kind of trending towards
16:35
Kentucky so that might be a guy coming
16:37
off the board um I know Nebraska already
16:39
got their left tackle so that's probably
16:41
he probably wants to play left tackle
16:43
too and then uh I don't know if Elijah
16:45
pritchet would want to play right tackle
16:46
because the money positions left tackle
16:48
so I mean that's another thing that you
16:49
have to you know warn about is all these
16:52
guys have agents now if you haven't
16:54
noticed this if you don't follow it that
16:55
well all these players who go into the
16:57
transfer portal have agents and their
16:59
agents are looking at like what position
17:02
is best to play to get to the NFL or how
17:04
does this team project to get you to the
17:05
NFL and so it's not going to surprise me
17:08
if they miss on on Pete I do like their
17:11
tackle room I mean I think that that
17:13
would I mean it's gonna be interesting
17:15
what are they going to do with Gula are
17:17
they going to put pritchet at left
17:18
tackle and move Gula to the right side
17:20
is Grant bricks GNA get in the mix um so
17:23
still some questions kind of lingering
17:24
out there but I still feel better about
17:27
the tackle room with um you know it then
17:29
without him so I I wish they could get
17:30
Pete too but that might be that might
17:33
just be too tough of an ass to uh you
17:35
know have one of those guys play right
17:36
tackle so I don't know we'll see what
17:38
happens and Jona Wilson the wide
17:40
receiver from Houston is another guy
17:41
that was projected towards Nebraska over
17:43
this past week and another wide receiver
17:45
room I mean it was kind of funny because
17:47
you posted on how big red Dana hogerson
17:50
clearly didn't like what he saw with
17:52
this group of wide receivers on the
17:54
roster because you know they're
17:55
recruiting tall body types they're
17:58
recruiting physical wide receivers you
18:00
know you you're see you're seeing you
18:02
know that kind of NFL type of wide
18:05
receiver the six foot2 you know physical
18:08
playmaker who can make things happen
18:10
after the catch so it's very clear that
18:13
that tequil shortz and and hogerson want
18:16
a particular wide receiver mold they
18:18
know what they want they're going after
18:20
it and uh I'll I'll be interesting to
18:22
see where Jonah Wilson fits in the room
18:25
because we have a lot of receivers right
18:27
now yeah we do and on Jonah Wilson this
18:29
is from Sean Callahan but it sounds like
18:32
so this is kind of weird but he says
18:33
that he's going to be joining the team
18:34
as a walk- on in January since the
18:36
scholarship limit still constrains
18:38
Nebraska until July 1st which I don't
18:40
really understand that part of it but um
18:42
so that's why there hasn't been a formal
18:44
announcement about his addition so I
18:46
mean from the way Sean Callahan's
18:48
telling it he's already committed to
18:49
Nebraska that being Jonah Wilson um so
18:51
if that's true I mean that gives you
18:53
four guys what I really like about these
18:56
guys you got danne key obviously who's
18:58
got one year to go and you needed to
19:00
bring in somebody like that but nah
19:02
Hunter Hardley Gilmore and Jonah Wilson
19:04
all have three years to play and so you
19:07
look at that with Jak cor and you add
19:08
Jak Cori Barney to that mix Carter
19:10
Nelson those five guys all have three
19:13
years to play and then you add in Cortez
19:14
Mills who's a true freshman and this
19:17
wide receiver room has a lot of room
19:20
yeah mosy too yeah OB yeah mosy um so
19:22
this receiver room has a lot of uh a lot
19:25
of room to grow seven really good
19:26
players I think you know Nelson I will
19:29
probably be a tight end but still I mean
19:31
a lot of pass catchers with you know
19:33
time to grow with Dylan Rola over these
19:35
next two seasons yeah a lot of weapons
19:38
for the quarterback a lot of big-time
19:39
Playmakers uh you know and it's just
19:44
quite a difference from the wide
19:45
receiver room like say three years ago
19:48
or even even four years ago um and I
19:51
think it's Testament to how hard this
19:53
coaching staff has worked in recruiting
19:54
and they're Landing Big Time Playmakers
19:56
now it's about continuing to build and
19:58
put wins and I think this is going to be
20:00
a big year for Rola as well as this
20:03
group of white
20:04
outs do you think there's any other
20:06
positions that Nebraska is going to
20:08
Target in the portal um you know here
20:11
coming up I mean they I feel like
20:12
they're pretty close to that their limit
20:14
but it sounds like they could maybe add
20:16
you know two or three guys if they could
20:18
if they could really um you know bring
20:20
something to the team I guess so if
20:22
there's any other positions out there
20:23
that need to be addressed what do you
20:25
think they are if any maybe one more
20:27
Veteran running back I know people are
20:29
stressing about the running back
20:30
position but quite
20:32
honestly I would be willing to kind of
20:35
you know see what Conor booth and Parker
20:37
can do I know I know Booth is a little
20:39
banged up right now but you know
20:41
hopefully his injury will you know
20:43
obviously be be taken care of by the
20:45
season but you know I would be okay with
20:49
I know they're freshman but you know
20:51
letting booth and Parker have have
20:54
playing time and then you have you know
20:56
uh emit Johnson you know Quinton IES
20:59
mecky Nelson so I know people are
21:02
stressing about running back I don't
21:03
really see it as a major issue but maybe
21:05
one more veteran guy would be would be
21:07
good and maybe they um you know because
21:10
they haven't they haven't offered a
21:12
running back they haven't hosted a
21:13
running back they haven't really even
21:14
contacted a running back that I've seen
21:16
so it makes me think maybe they're just
21:19
going to go through Spring ball and see
21:21
how things are and maybe maybe that's a
21:23
position they don't need to address um I
21:26
guess we'll see you know it does it's
21:28
not like there's anybody in the portal
21:29
right now I mean there's a there's a few
21:30
guys um but I just haven't checked on
21:32
the running backs very much so I don't
21:33
even know if like they're still in there
21:35
like Wisconsin had a back that one in
21:36
the portal um but yeah I mean I I think
21:39
EMT Johnson is is
21:41
definitely that guy I think he's he's
21:44
going to be the number one guy and um I
21:45
think there's some interesting pieces
21:47
behind him and yeah hopefully that that
21:48
might be a question that kind of gets
21:50
pushed to the spring at this point um
21:52
and if you need one you have the spring
21:53
portal window so I'd still uh I'd still
21:57
like to see him add a a big defensive
21:59
tackle but I'm starting to feel like
22:02
maybe that's not going to happen so no
22:05
um I I kind of got the same read on it
22:06
too but you know I think I think we'll
22:10
have to see how these pieces fit
22:12
together I mean I think this defense is
22:14
going to look a little bit different
22:16
than last year's I think it honestly has
22:18
a chance to be better than last year's
22:20
but we'll see how all the pieces fit but
22:22
I think overall they've done a really
22:23
really nice job in the transfer portal I
22:25
know Matt rule has been about
22:26
development and you know recruiting
22:28
players at high school and you know
22:29
developing him but he's since changed
22:32
his approach to fit the modern quote
22:34
unquote game of college football and I
22:35
think it's worked yeah I'll be to see
22:38
where they line up all the guys up front
22:41
but I'm guessing that van papa will be
22:43
the the you know the nose type it right
22:45
now um and then you got K Davis and then
22:48
Williams Noy um Elijah Judy also will be
22:52
in the mix there um is one of those guys
22:54
that will play kind of on the interior I
22:56
mean no's a guy that I think will rush
22:58
the passer but he's probably going to be
23:00
some of that maybe five technique too or
23:02
I don't know it's just I'm really
23:03
interested to see how they how they do
23:04
that maybe they go with a maybe they
23:06
played more fourman fronts and um you
23:09
know that's something that I think would
23:11
fit Nebraska's Personnel pretty well
23:14
yeah and you know I think I think when
23:16
you look at you know the front you just
23:18
mentioned no Judy you know Kiona Davis
23:21
Van Poppel that's not a bad front at all
23:24
I I would be happy you know putting out
23:26
that front you know in game so we'll see
23:28
what happens but um I trust John Butler
23:30
to find the right combination and um you
23:33
know I think this defense has a chance
23:34
to be really aggressive and you know
23:37
really let the younger players shine as
23:39
well I think you're going to see a lot
23:40
of younger players make an impact this
23:43
year yeah I think
23:46
um I think if you look at it for a
23:49
fourman front that that fourman front
23:51
actually sounds pretty good you know
23:52
with uh Judy and Van Papo playing The
23:55
Tackle roles I think ke Davis could be a
23:56
big defensive end you know sort of like
23:58
yeah and Doman Su was I I'm just like
24:01
you know he can be that type of player
24:03
where you can be like in my opinion he
24:05
could be a rundown guy on the outside
24:08
set the edge and then push him inside to
24:09
rush the passer on third Downs or
24:11
whatever so yeah it's it's just going to
24:13
be I just don't think we're going to see
24:15
as much 335 as we did last year and
24:17
that's not a bad thing at all no I don't
24:19
think that's a bad thing at all either
24:20
and um I think it probably suits the
24:23
athletes that we have a little bit
24:24
better to not run a 335 but uh we'll see
24:28
what happens and I'm really really
24:30
interested to see how that secondary
24:31
room shakes out and we mentioned the
24:33
depth and uh we mentioned you know the
24:36
playmakers that they were able to get at
24:38
the position and then I'm really
24:39
interested to see how you know it kind
24:41
of that that position battle kind of
24:43
shapes up through the course of the
24:45
spring and then fall
24:46
Camp yeah it'll be interesting to see
24:48
how that all uh kind of plays out but um
24:51
the roster is coming together so we'll
24:53
wrap it up there you guys um I'm sure
24:55
we'll be back for another episode I'm
24:56
thinking on Thursday and we'll kind of
24:58
wrap up what's been happening um look
24:59
ahead to the next Nebraska basketball
25:01
game which is rers on Thursday so that's
25:03
going to be a really important game for
25:04
the Huskers so we'll be previewing that
25:06
and we'll talk about everything else so
25:08
make sure you don't miss anything um hit
