Well, as you can see, behind me, I am at
0:02
the Lally Sports Complex here on South
0:04
Campus at Syracuse University. The
0:07
morning after last night's unbelievable
0:10
Summer Slam Cuse event at the Lovell
0:14
Barn. And here are all my observations
0:17
from the day, from the night, okay?
0:19
Number one, it is impossible to walk
0:22
into an event like that, which was at
0:24
this beautiful place in Skaneateles, in
0:28
property, with this incredible barn
0:30
built that has a a full-size
0:33
court inside of it, and it's got bars
0:36
and cigar areas and all types of
0:40
beautiful landscaping outside and and
0:43
inside two levels. The whole thing is
0:45
incredible. It's impossible not to walk
0:49
And when you see all of the walls
0:51
plastered with Syracuse
0:57
and you see the the orange-clad fans
1:03
and you see the 2003 national
1:06
championship icon and you see the block
1:10
S. It's impossible not to just
1:13
immediately feel pride and optimism.
1:15
Then you combine that with
1:19
Carmelo coming through, G-Mac coming
1:22
through, Fran Brown coming through, and
1:25
suddenly it's kind of elevated to star
1:27
status. Wow, I'm at this event and all
1:30
the whole crew is here.
1:32
Then Boeheim is there as well. Then you
1:36
add in the team which are going through
1:39
really cool things like the three-point
1:40
contest and the dunk contest, and that's
1:43
kind of the spectacle. And then you add
1:45
to it this kind of auction type of of
1:49
event where there's a lot of
1:51
fundraising, there is a lot of elite
1:53
packages being um, off, and you're like,
1:56
"Ah, this is really, really cool."
1:59
Everything's kind of coming together.
2:01
And then, the final piece of the puzzle
2:03
is, it's not like Carmelo and Gerry are
2:06
kind of just there to shake a few hands
2:09
and to like be the names.
2:11
Those guys are in it, and that was the
2:14
coolest part about this. Carmelo,
2:16
in his incredible pink velour jumpsuit,
2:20
and working the crowd. I couldn't
2:22
believe how natural and authentic he was
2:25
in working the crowd and getting people
2:29
You had Gerry McNamara, who when I spoke
2:31
to G-Mac was so focused on bringing back
2:35
winning and discipline and
2:38
accountability. I'm like, "Wow,
2:40
I'm ready to go right now for basketball
2:42
season. Like, what's the date?"
2:44
Combined with this energy of the the
2:46
entire event. I know they had a target
2:48
about a million bucks to raise. I think
2:50
they hit the target, which is incredible
2:52
for one night for Syracuse to knock out
2:55
NIL for a million bucks or whatever,
2:58
was just awesome. The whole thing was so
3:01
positive, and I thought there was a lot
3:03
of interesting anecdotes and quotes from
3:08
But, the vibe was so glass half full.
3:13
And I love that, because you know,
3:14
Syracuse fans can naturally be kind of,
3:17
you know, beaten down. Maybe it's the
3:19
winters, maybe it's the fact that we've
3:21
seen other Big East brethren soar, like
3:24
UConn to win national championships or
3:26
recently seen St. John's getting really
3:28
good again. Maybe it's when you're in
3:30
the ACC, you're measuring yourself
3:31
against UNC and Duke in basketball.
3:33
Maybe it's the three-win season in
3:35
football. Maybe it's all those non-bowl
3:37
seasons over the last decade plus, two
3:40
But, you know, there's kind of a natural
3:41
like, "All right, we'll see." But, last
3:43
night was everybody was so amped
3:47
for it to be now. For it to be now, and
3:53
after I went to the UNC basketball game
3:57
"This is a crowd that is just wanting a
4:01
reason to erupt again." You know, it was
4:04
a lost basketball season,
4:06
and they were going nowhere in February,
4:09
and there were still 24,000 fans in the
4:11
building. Everybody knew that it was
4:13
going to be 5 straight years about the
4:14
tournament, and yet there were still 23,
4:19
people inside And not many of them were
4:21
wearing Carolina blue,
4:22
because they're just waiting for hoops
4:24
to get good again. And I thought last
4:26
night was kind of that pilot light that
4:28
has to be lit, where people start
4:30
getting charged up. And the introductory
4:32
press conference of G-Mac was certainly
4:34
indicative of that. But when you hear
4:37
him speak and hear him and Melo swap
4:39
stories, and they're working the crowd
4:42
in this incredible setting,
4:44
you're going, "All right. Now the pieces
4:47
are really in place." And I just walked
4:49
out of there going, "This is a real
4:52
real moment of of camaraderie, of unity,
4:58
of optimism, and of production."
5:01
They raised a lot of money.
5:03
I even threw in a hundred bucks, because
5:05
I went in for one of those uh one of
5:08
those raffle tickets for the Syracuse
5:10
classic pickup truck. I knew, and they
5:13
told me I could drive it off the lot. I
5:15
knew that I would either return home to
5:18
my my house in the Hudson Valley, and my
5:20
wife and my two kids would consider me a
5:23
conquering hero because I was driving a
5:25
classic orange and blue painted uh
5:29
pickup truck with a Otto the Orange on
5:31
the side, and I would be king forever,
5:33
and they would fetch my slippers and
5:35
cook me meals, and they would be uh
5:37
well-behaved and eat all their dinner
5:39
and go to sleep on time, and be like,
5:41
"Wow, Dad, you're the best."
5:43
Or my wife would say, "What the hell is
5:47
Where did you get that and how much did
5:51
And so I only threw in 100 bucks cuz at
5:54
I could rationalize it. I did not win or
5:56
else I would have it behind me right now
5:59
But everybody felt the vibe last night.
6:01
I connect with so many alumni, so many
6:03
fans, so many people from the area
6:05
that just felt good and I and I think
6:08
for a long time Syracuse sports fans
6:10
have felt like when is it going to be
6:12
our time? And I thought last night kind
6:15
of felt like it was finally. It was kind
6:19
to to be the cool kids, to have the cool
6:21
spot, to have the cool stuff, to have
6:23
the cool players. And um I can't say
6:25
enough about Melo. I mean like he took
6:27
pictures with everybody.
6:29
He hung out at the bar at the Labdells
6:31
Farm Barn for the entire night. I mean
6:34
he outlasted me. I left at like
6:36
midnight. He was with everybody, hanging
6:39
out, having a good time. Bunch of the
6:41
guys from the '03 team came back. I was
6:43
talking to a bunch of them like Matt
6:44
Gorman and others. They're all great.
6:47
And uh you know, Latavius Murray was
6:48
there, Syracuse native, Buffalo Bill. We
6:52
had a Buffalo Bills chant going on. And
6:55
uh it just was a was was really good
6:59
big ups to Vinnie Labdells, big ups to
7:02
Syracuse, big ups to Melo and Fran and
7:05
Felicia and G-Mac and all Brian Blair,
7:09
everybody that was there. And and
7:11
even Boeheim was in seemingly good
7:12
spirits. And that's that's when you know
7:16
When when Coach Boeheim is cracking
7:19
jokes, cracking wise, and talking about
7:21
his poker games. Food was awesome. The
7:23
food trucks were great. And uh just the
7:25
the entire night was uh
7:28
fit the bill of a big-time sports event
7:32
with the community rallying and I was
7:34
really lucky to be there. And hopefully
7:36
you guys feel like you share some of the
7:38
experience as well from this video and
7:40
from those pictures and probably the
7:41
videos online as well from uh from
7:43
Syracuse Athletics. I I've got videos,
7:46
recap videos of every single football
7:48
game coming up after every football
7:49
game. I'm doing a video right here on
7:51
this YouTube channel. So, make sure
7:54
I'm fired up about the season and I have
7:55
a sit-down interview with Fran Brown
7:57
coming up. I've got a long-form sit-down
7:59
interview with Brian Blair coming up
8:00
that we recorded just earlier this
8:02
morning. So, look for those right here
8:03
on this channel. I'm super stoked to put
8:06
those out there cuz I think it gave us a
8:07
lot of insight, gave me a lot of insight
8:09
on the football program, the athletic
8:11
department in general and what they have
8:12
in store for us all as fans in 2026.
8:17
In 2026. So, thanks everybody for
8:19
