Winning Coaches Are Escaping College Basketball 💣

0:00
Dusty May
0:02
heading to the NBA
0:05
underscores, underlines, and highlights
0:08
in fluorescent yellow marker what an
0:11
absolute disaster
0:14
college sports is? Because think about
0:16
this. Has anybody, any coach, benefited
0:21
greater from the lawlessness that is
0:25
college basketball than Dusty May? Dusty
0:27
May's entire roster last year was
0:31
essentially transfers. So this
0:33
unpenalized, unfettered transfer portal
0:37
mania that has hit college basketball
0:39
and college football and the rest of
0:41
college sports, he has been the biggest
0:44
beneficiary of because he just won a
0:46
national championship. And within
0:49
months, he's like, I got to get out of
0:51
here. This is too much for me. going to
0:54
Dallas. That's decent NBA job. Big
0:58
market. You get Cooper Flag as your
1:01
centerpiece. Maybe you get some patience
1:03
because your best guy is young. But I
1:07
mean, let's face it, if you wanted to
1:10
win in college,
1:12
there was not many places better than
1:14
Michigan. You had just proven you could
1:16
win a national championship. It's the
1:19
first Big 10 National Championship in 25
1:23
26 years. It's got Big 10 money, purses,
1:28
pocketbooks, wallets. You've got donors
1:30
in a tizzy. You've got all types of
1:33
brand recognition through the through
1:35
the school, through marketing, through
1:38
Jordan, through all of these apparel,
1:40
you know, marketing deals. You've got so
1:43
many opportunities to maximize money,
1:47
resources,
1:49
drive revenue, and recruits and build
1:52
winners. If you are going to win,
1:56
there's few places that are going to be
1:58
better served to do it than Michigan.
2:00
You just proved it. And you couldn't
2:03
wait to get out. I mean, it's been like
2:05
10 minutes since the national
2:07
championship game. And you could only
2:10
imagine those shots of Dusty May when he
2:14
is watching his guys celebrate in route
2:17
to a final four, in route to a national
2:20
championship game or the championship
2:22
himself itself. When there's that shot
2:25
of May under the baseline, under the
2:27
basket, just kind of watching it, it
2:30
really makes you wonder if he knew, I am
2:32
out of here because I don't want to deal
2:34
with this anymore. Which is insane. But
2:37
is that not the biggest blinking glowing
2:41
neon sign of how broken college sports
2:45
is? That even a guy that benefited more
2:47
than anybody else from the lack of
2:50
rules, even a guy that was made, I mean,
2:53
he could have been in Michigan for how
2:55
long? He now has a blank check in terms
3:01
of recruiting, in terms of resources, in
3:03
terms of his facilities and recruiting
3:06
budget and staffing and instead said, "I
3:09
am out of here." Now, unless there is
3:11
something a ticking time bomb where they
3:16
are worried that there's going to be a
3:17
hammer brought down, maybe a little bit
3:20
like the the Harbaugh situation.
3:23
Maybe that's coming and that's why he's
3:24
he's heading out. It'd be hard to
3:28
imagine something like that considering
3:29
the NCAA has no rules anymore and so who
3:32
would be governing that type of penalty
3:34
and punishment. But the idea that Dusty
3:37
may of all people said, "My time is up
3:40
here, I'm gone," says everything you
3:44
need to know about the landscape of
3:48
college basketball. And for the record,
3:51
I think May will be pretty good in the
3:52
NBA. I do. May has proven how good he
3:57
can be based on the set of rules that he
4:00
is surrounded by. So if it was a low
4:03
league, smaller league, mid major, low
4:06
major like FAU, he could make that work.
4:09
If it was a high major with deep pockets
4:11
in a big conference, he can make that
4:13
work. I think you'll see him adjust to
4:16
what he needs to do in the NBA. And
4:19
frankly, you kind of know the bit before
4:22
you step foot in there versus the
4:24
college basketball world where
4:26
everything's always changing all the
4:28
time and it's trying to shoot a moving
4:30
target.
4:32
Happy trails, Dusty May. We hardly knew
4:35
you.
